  3. Yeah they're nice looking (thanks for posting). Lotta weird about them, though (but one can say that about everything cobbled from mono that's that old). Specifically, the guts scream kit, but the grille frames are factory and not the kit (talking molding). Stuff happens in production and there are shipment urgencies but EV make zillions of 12's in those years. My guess is the guy started factory single-driver, swapped his SP12B's for the Stephens later and eventually added the Univ upgrade expansion "kits" for the rest. Of the 3 revs of Marquis, this rev most closely-resembles the Rebel/Shorthorn concept PWK hatched. EV introduced the dual slits first in the Empires (and named them Bilinear Lenticular Slots and marketed "BLS"--that bit rings of Mr. Howard Souther). No support straps on the horns (maybe for cost by then, who knows). No images of the pots. Respectfully, there's no way on a good day with a tailwind that they hit 106. They would sound positively lovely on a lot of stuff given some amp synergy and WAF would seem good for many.

  5. I had a Dali once but sold it when all the authentication garbage began here in the US. I had "The Invisible Man," which I found very interesting. Picked it up at a gallery in Columbus. Had the authenticity paperwork but who knows. Just got freaky so I made a lil money. Made the decision to just hang my photography work and my rock stuff. I'm just totally outta room. So I look for another photo cause I'm putting it together in here and this pops up. It's been a minute if you eyeball the ticket price. 😂 I was consolidating my old tickets/passes in a box and ran across this ticket. No idea who signed it until one day a friend piped up at jam nite tellin another lie on me. It was all about me taking him up to see Tom Petty. I didn't remember but kinda did. Then the story rolled out. We got there and went down to our seats. He went in first and we sat down. Minute later he says isn't that Michael Stanley sitting beside me? I was clueless so looked down and yea it was him. So? Well Chris got my ticket and asked him to sign them ,(tourist mode), which he did. The backstory is Michael yelled down to me after that and invited me back for coffee after the show. Petty/coffee? 24/7, 365. Petty comes out and sees (he knew Michael was there and where he was sitting) Michael waves and goes up to do a couple numbers. So Michael tells me he'll see me later on the way out and up. So yea we, went back and it wasn't til recently it all came back to me. 25 years later he's all excited telling me all about his amazing night. hahaha To me it was just another easy drive outta the venue. At my age I just look at it a bit differently today. Two more friends down and just another day on the road. Guess I'll have to do something w/tickets/passes/sticky icky passes, picks, slides, sticks and other junk. lol No more long stories either, just saw the pic so figured I'd share the concept. My morning chuckle. 😂

  10. Just finished East of Eden. Steinbeck knew how to put details to the characters. About 3/4 of the way through Surrouded by Idiots. IMHO, the book could be a lot shorter and still get the message through. I have to admit that a lot of what the author says is true.

  14. Ok, just got back from spinning a stack of my vinyl on some Cornwalls and comparing to the Forte's. No La Scalas at this place. . . Honestly, comparing the two, they're VERY similar. The Forte's have slightly punchier bass, the Cornwalls have slightly better imaging / soundstage, but not by much and not anywhere near what I heard with the La Scalas. The Cornwalls do for sure sound "bigger". I have to double check what amp they were running at the dealer I heard the LS the first time, I thought it was also a tube pre-amp Macintosh. I did like the Cornwalls, nice speakers, but the LS were better without a doubt. I don't know what voodoo is in those LS but they were just magical. Now I want to hear the K horns and hopefully one day the Jubilees! Maybe I'll change my mind in the morning but as of now I'm thinking I'll order the Forte's and get them nice and set up in my room and get used to them for a while. I have a nagging suspicion that eventually I'll get an itch to trade up for some La Scals and maybe a sub or two . . . we shall see! Also listened to some GoldenEar tower speakers. I don't know if my ears are broken or something but all those super expensive speakers just sound dead to me, TOO neutral or something? Anyone on here running Decware tube amps? Thinking I may need to start looking for something with lightbulbs on top to sit next to the Marantz 2240.

  17. 4 different speaker designs Closed cabinet, infinite baffle ported, passive radiator ported, fully horn loaded Each design has trade offs No speaker is better than every other speaker at everything Any of the 4 you will be very happy 2 Heresys on coffee tables, plus a front fire sub-s sound great etc...... 5 Heresy 5.2 system is a world beater The LaScala delivers the best human voice reproduction in the Industry it's weak spot below 50Hz is remedied with a decent front firing sub-s For the music I listen to, the Sub is off most of the time. If you like to hear the Angels singing, LaScala is the clear choice The best sleeper in the Industry is the Forte If rock is your vice, look no furthur

  19. Joe Zupko, a friend and artist, sadly departed. These two works were done using crayons and small pieces of plywood he dug out of a construction dumpster. In his later works, that's mostly the way he painted. Edit. This would make more sense if I actually posted the picture of the paintings. Sorry.

  21. I've owned two BX-3 amps, starting in the late '80s when home theater was the coming thing. I sold one, the one I kept developed a problem in one channel that was caused by the relays. Playing with the speaker select pushbutton switches would clear it up. Mice chewed the wiring in it when I had it apart in the garage, so it went to a junk hauler when I moved. I miss the CX-3 MkII preamp, I should have kept it.

  26. I was always very fond of music and musicians gear along with the audio equipment meant to recreate it in our homes. The thought crossed my mind to possibly get into the industry but doing a startup is a shot in the dark and is extremely hit or miss not matter how good your product is. At the time it was just too big a risk and I just wanted to start earning money so I could live a comfortable life instead of going bankrupt. This wasn't a personal decision, I had a family to provide for so I took jobs with financial security. I never stated I am a successful amplifier company, I just enjoy making things especially amplifiers. I know I am in the minority in my viewpoints compared to your average audiophile and when one of them hears something from me they don't want to believe well then this is always how the argument starts. When they don't like the message they character assassinate the messenger to try and discredit me. It's fine, I don't expect to change peoples minds over night.

  27. Absolutely agreed. I was beyond delighted when Captain was kind enough to offer his services to the audio community. Without his offering, I would perhaps not have ever tried another tube amp. They are too damn expensive to just guess on what you like and what you don't. This is based on my experience with only a few tubes amps some years ago. I liked that sound of the frimaon 275 during my brief period with it, but would have been pissed paying full retail or close for it and learning what I now know about it later.... Captains knowledge and what he has been sharing has caught my attention and I have been reading and learning a bit with others contributing as well. This is why I came to this forum in the first place.... Great people and vast knowledge.

  29. Rigggghhhhhht... lol A friend's son was in Camaroon with the Peace Corps in 2016 and met this artist in the small village where he was stationed. When Max came back to the US he got a tube of his stuff sent to him from the artist. He had about 14 pieces and friends bought them then Max sent him the cash. Think I paid about $150 for this one. Hangs above a small desk my grandfather made years ago. Room for my laptop where his old typewriter sat. Laptop and mouse are thee w/a couple lil wooden draws full of junk. hahaha. I just lean back in my chair and laff everytime. Back to the roots of music. It's just me! lolol THE MORE YOU LOOK THE MORE YOU SEE!

  30. I have owned the CW IV and now the LaScala II. I would say you can hardly go wrong with either. I too think the LS has very good bass on it’s own. But if you want the bass performance of the Cornwall, you will need a sub(s). If you don’t have the room or just don’t want the hassle of subs, buy the Cornwall IV and don’t look back. I completely agree with @Islander LS with a pair of subs surpassed KHorns in my room. Shakey

  32. Have you measured the new W.E.300b at 1W ? It's an eye opener for sure, possibly due to the new proprietary filament coating. None of the other 300b's are even close, although among the "other" high-end brands (EML, KR, Takatsuki), the Elrog ER300b (possibly due to the Thoriated-Tungsten filament) is closest, full disclosure, we have no EAT 300b to evaluate. Also, the Transcendence Amplifier uses a higher-than-typical primary on the output transformers, this helps to keep distortion lower at higher power as well. The amplifier was designed for musicality, not power. If a 3K primary OT was used at this operating point, the power would be in excess of 11W. This said, it really is a "dance" that numbers alone cannot quantify. Matt.

  35. Well that’s because of the complex nature of the back air chamber. If I was going to enclose the back of an older khorn, I would probably use 3/4” and brace it. That is a tall panel…..

  38. Howdy all, tipped to this thread by a Klipsch customer in Des Moines................. Been busy. A new review dropped either late Saturday or early Sunday over at Part-time Audiophile............ here is the link in case you have interest in reading. https://parttimeaudiophile.com/2022/01/28/toolshed-amps-transcendence-300b-amplifier-review/ Although the reviewer used a single, wide-band speaker, you all know I'm more of a Klipsch/Altec guy. Different strokes for different folks. It's all good. No hard feelings with Klipsch management about the Cary thing either........... Billy is a great guy and Cary has some decent product. Business is business. Cheers! Matt.

  39. I am having trouble with what was wrong with posting multiple songs. I was just having fun and hoped someone might find a song (or two, or more) that they liked. If it was because you didn’t like them this is the US where I believe you still have the freedom to not listen to them. If you didn’t want to spend the few seconds skipping by them I have no answer. 41. Now I see a bunch of Receivers out there now that say they are Qobuz/Tidal ready, USB ready, etc., so if I wanted to go that route, which components in post No. 1 will come in the received? I can either put a receiver outside, or a receiver inside, dual zone) and run the speaker wires outside to the speakers on the patio.

  42. If not obvious in the picture from the first post. You can have multiple sources of music. Anything after the DAC and before the "Speaker" could be your existing system. There could be a preamp with CDP, FM Tuner, Tape deck, Turn table, etc. Anything before the Modem/Router is the outside world of the Internet. This is where the term Streaming comes in. You "Stream" from Tidal/Qoboz. I actually don't. All my music is local to my house. I've got 44/16 Flac files, DSD/DSF, even a few .MP3s (GASP!!!). There are lots of ways to store/retrieve digital music. I know a lot of you totally get this. But I've had multiple forum members ask me how my Orchard Audio PecanPi "All in one Streamer" gets music to their system. So lets hear from all of you where this is old hat....or is that HAT (“Hardware attached on Top”)😉 Sigma Delta, R2R/R-2R/Ladder, Bit-perfect, NOS, OS, MQA. Once we get the infrastructure set up its time to argue about "best" DAC.

  43. The easiest way to look at the difference between the Cornwall and LaScala sound is to look at the intended applications for each when they were designed! After PWK designed the K-horn, he embarked on designing speakers to supplement it in a home listening environment. Numerous designs were evolved over the years for that application, some of which went into production. One of these was the Heresy...it being a low-cost small non-corner speaker that could be used for a center-channel in a three-speaker array between two K-horns. The Cornwall was designed for a home listening environment, originally as a center channel speaker that would provide more bottom-end than a Heresy did between two K-horns. It has a performance that is supposed to provide "fill" where the k-horn doesn't in that application. Although it produces low bass, and provides some good fill there, the K-horns already provided most of the bass necessary in that application. The LaScala was designed as a stand alone sound reinforcement speaker for stage use. Winthrop Rockefeller told PWK that he wanted a pair of speakers that he could set-up on a flat-bed trailer, and use while he stumped the state of Arkansas on his gubernatorial campaign. He wanted them to sound as close to the K-horn as possible, but be easly transported. The intent was to provide the same top-end as the K-horn, and also provide a folded horn bass bin section that would work in applications where the k-horn was too large and heavy OR had no corners to sit in. The LaScala is a stand alone folded horn, but due to that reason and size limitations, it does not go as deep as the k-horn does in its bass curve. It has the same kind of clarity in its bass as the k-horn does, but just doesn't go as low. The Cornwall's bass curve tapers off a good bit below that of the LaScala, thereby giving a lower bass response, due to its ported design...which is enhanced by its positioning in corners or along walls. The LaScala, on the other hand, provides more detail and clarity in what bass it DOES produce, even though it does not reach as low as the Cornwall does! The fact that many like the LaScala better than the Cornwall for a center channel fill speaker between a pair of K-horns is what led PWK to design the Belle in the first place....he was one of them!! In an application between two K-horns, the LaScala provides identical top-end fill, and SOME bass that is identical to that of the k-horn in its sound, and the k-horns are left to provide the much lower notes the LaScala struggles to get out. With the Cornwall, the bass is there, and it doesn't have to struggle to get those low notes out...but it lacks some of the detail and clarity the folded horn provides. So...if horn detail and clarity are your wants, and you don't mind giving up some bottom-end bass in the process, then get the LaScala. But if you want a more full-range listening experience, and don't mind losing some of the detail and clarity a folded horn bottom-end provides, then go for the Cornwall! Both are fine speakers! But, if you can't make up your mind, and you have a place to put them, then just get K-horns instead, so you don't have to deal with the decision! You will probably eventually get them anyway! LOL! An important point here is this: It is a tribute to PWK that all of these designs of his that were ORIGINALLY intended as SUPPLEMENTS to his K-horns have gathered up such a loyal following over all these years as fine speakers in their own right! It says something for the man that as he designed and produced these, he wanted them to be MORE than just a good supplement, he wanted them to be GOOD SPEAKERS! And all were, and ARE such...even today...so very many years after their introductions!
