  4. It wasn’t my intention, but I wound up using Roon for all my listening last night, mostly recordings ripped from my CD collection on the laptop. My initial impression (without any direct comparison) is that Roon with its Ethernet connection directly into the NAD M32 BluOS module is superior to using J River and an HDMI connection from PC to M32. I’ve preferred HDMI over USB. I have to admit last night was a real eye (ear) opener. Quite enjoyable. I started out playing a few tracks from MA Recordings SACD sampler, MAonSA. Then quite a few tracks from AudiogoN’s Wake Up Your Ears” Chesky Records sampler. Outstanding! Then a MFSL Master release of Cannonball Adderley/Miles Davis “Something Else”. Roon found and made some recommendations (on Tidal) based on what I had been listening to from my local music and I must admit they were spot on. I marked them as favorites for further listening later on. Roon’s metadata collection for my local albums (like the Chesky sampler) was very impressive and presented with excellent graphics/aesthetics. I intended to do the traditional Friday night “rock out” listening session but it obviously didn’t turn out that way. And that’s a good thing because it’s indicative that I was very engaged listening to a lot I haven’t heard in a while, with at least the initial impression that it was coming across better than I remember, and certainly nothing like the initial Roon experience. Of course I still had to “rock out” for a while so finished up with a couple tunes from Tool’s first album “Undertow”. Yeah Baby!!!! One peculiar thing I noticed so far (not verified) using Roon, it *seems” as though I can tolerate a higher SPL with Roon playing the same tracks than I would from PC via HDMI or streaming from Tidal. Not sure what might be causing this. As much as I hate to use this analogy, it was sort of like using a modern McIntosh amplifier. It sort of took a very slight edge off at higher SPL. I haven’t used any Roon DSP yet although that was my main interest in using Roon. With J River I previously used Isotope Ozone mastering software plug-in. I stopped using it after a while because it seemed to overtax my laptop, often slightly degrading overall sound quality (the cure was worse than the disease). I won’t be surprised if Roon does the same thing. If so, I guess it will be time for an Intel i7 NUC.

  6. Not 100% sure but I believe streaming audio over ethernet or wifi to Shield tops out at 48kHz. Over HDMI you can go to 192kHz. Roon is adjusting automatically.

  8. No posts in here for two weeks? Then I looked at the post about Gronk. Yea, @JL Sargent he wants out. Wants to play for Cincy??? Another ring from a rebuilding young team? Would surprise me if they took him. They need a major rebuild on that O line. Cleveland shipped OBJ to LA??? OBJ is a piece of work imo but if the Rams win he's got his ring. Smart move by the Rams or no? lol Picked up a guy w/the moves to run out there and catch a ball? Gonna be a fun watch for sure. Thanks Cleveland I got my ring! hahaha OR I "almost" had it! lol

  11. I'm not a TrueNAS user but I don't think that should matter. I use PLEX for locally stored movies and Roon for locally stored music. Big picture wise, you should have all your media on the same network. The various "players" need to be on same network too. Configure each player to find the desired media in it's location. If you are only talking music files you should not need to do anything differently between the two. You for sure don't need two copies for everything if that is what you are asking.

  17. Yeah, too many posts per se, I get it. I NEVER EVER listen to country, but damn, I have found more than a couple of these tunes to my liking... Strange.... I'll be exploring this forum more often now. Have been finding many gems outside my comfort zone lately. Love it.

  19. That's what most people would think is the trick but that's not it. I incorporate positive feedback in some of my amplifiers that would bring a SET amplifier output impedance of maybe ~1 ohm and a damping factor of ~5 to an output impedance of .08 ohms and a damping factor >100. So solid state like damping but the finesse of a SET. The SET niche is a small one and typically builders like to copy old designs and use fancy boutique parts to try and improve the sound the wrong way instead of going back to the drawing board and changing the circuitry to improve some of the shortcomings of the topology. I am all for quality transformers and that's where most of the money should be invested into but they can only bring you so far since they are just impedance converters.

  20. I must admit that I had not thought that a SET with negative feedback can run much more stable but I believe it is now. I have an Audion Silvernight 300B since 1994 and it has no negative feedback. It is dependent on the loudspeaker impedance accordingly. Perhaps I have generalized my impression too much from this experience. I would love to hear such an amp with negative feedback SET. Because based on the efficiency of the Lascala, 5 watt should be sufficient for the vast majority of music situations in the living room, and with negative feedback the amp would be a speaker impedance independent supply of voltage. Another aspect why people might think that they need e.g. a 150 watt amp when their speakers are rated at e.g. 100 watt. The 100 watt rating says nothing more than the power at which the components burn out. The following is not scientific at all, it is the hypothesis of an everyday understanding. We all remember the time when we had light bulbs with tungsten filament. If you put a 40 watt bulb in the lamp, the light was weaker than if you put a 100 watt bulb in the same lamp. So you think that a 100 watt bulb converts more energy. This is correct as far as it goes. But transferred to our hi-fi world one could think that if a 100 watt bulb needs corresponding energy from the mains to shine brightly, so would a loudspeaker with 100 watt power handling require a corresponding energy supply. I know that sounds a bit crazy but it may be that many people were brought up in this view and transfer this understanding to a loudspeaker. To stay with the analogy, a Lascala is more like a modern LED bulb that produces more brightness with much less power. The only difference is that the Lascala burns out at 100 watts but the LED lamp already burns out at e.g. 15 watts when it is designed for 10 watts. But this would not happen because the 10 watt LED bulb only "takes" from the mains what it needs. The Lascala on the other hand would burn out if fed with too much power. I hope this example was not completely wrong from the point of view of our real technically educated members.

  26. I talked with Jim. Seems like very nice guy. Ordered the kit. Got it a few days later. Replaced the Type B Oil Can crossover caps with his kit. I can say it was a huge difference. These speakers don’t hurt my ears now. The clarity is better. Soundstage better. Everything is crisper and more accurate. Transparency was the biggest gain. But all in all I am surprised to the details that has come out. The Type B is as simple as a Xover as you’ll find in the Klipsch line. I do have some Vcap ODAM’s ordered. It’ll be interesting to see the difference. In Xovers the ODAM’s are my go to. The Highend Vcaps are just to expensive. I do have them in the Amps and preamp. ODAM’s seem like a good compromise. At the end of the day. Jim’s kit for my speakers were well worth the price.

Some using their inheritance money. They're ALL in! That's insanity at it's finest imo. 12k for two nosebleed seats? Waaaaay outta my comfort zone. I'd be out there lookin for a dropped ticket in a crowd and sleepin in a fairly clean dumpster. 😂

  29. Hello! I am new to this forum. So I've spent the last 3 weeks researching and have gotten close to a decision. I have already purchased the Denon AVR-x4700h. (Replaced my Onkyo TX-NR656) My current 5.1 is the Energy Take Classic 5.1 (total 500$ when purchased). I am looking to first upgrade my front sound stage (L,C,R) + Sub. The Take Classic bookshelf speakers work quite well as satellites and Atmos and they will do until I get more money. My budget is under 1500$. Unfortunately, I am in Japan where prices are much higher and availability is much lower. There are also no places to go and demo / listen to any home theater speakers in Okinawa. So based on research and (highly limited) available options I've been able to narrow my purchase options to the following: Klipsch R-610F R-25C R-12W (Total Cost: 1110USD) OR: Polk Signature Elite ES50 ES35 --could go with the ES30 {it is 100$ cheaper here}, but I hear the dialogue is clearer with the 35, and I can use crossover to reduce the distortion from the bass R-12W (the PSW10 is only 50$ cheaper but I don't think it matches the ability of the R-12w) (Total Cost: 1400USD) OR: JBL STAGE A190 A125C SUB A100P (Total Cost: 1320USD) Can someone give me their experience with these speakers? Or any comparison between the options? There are so many haters against the Klipsch Reference series as being too bright, ear piercing, and the R-25C having muddy dialogue. But I see so many people have them for home theaters (and the RP series is too expensive for me to be able to justify to my wife... hahaha) NOTE: Please do not recommend other speakers, they are not an option based on price / availability here. Thank you so much!!

  30. I'm probably not best qualified to answer this since I too am in the learning curve. But from what I understand so far, the answer to your question is probably YES. But the catch is, the local area network. The LAN now becomes your connections between components (instead of interconnect cables - RCA, XLR, HDMI, etc). In my case the NAD M32 with BluOS module installed allows for Ethernet connection directly into the amplifier. I imagine most current HT receivers have this capability. Most "stereo" amplifiers do not. And yes, Roon will gather everything, all your locally stored music files, internet radio stations, subscription music services such as Tidal or Quboz, and "consolidate" them. For instance, when using Roon, if I'm looking at music under the heading (tab) "albums", Roon shows my favorite albums I tagged on Tidal as well as what's on my PC hard drive, in alphabetical order, and indicates where it's from (ie: Tidal) The other thing I liked was that Roon also showed the file Format (FLAC or WAV, MP3, etc), the bit depth and sample rate, with or without MQA. Sort of let's you know "what you're getting" or what you actually have.

  35. I suggest 80 Hz. because if you highpass the LS, it will lower distortion and let the Sub be difficult to point to. It's a compromise. I haven't owned LaScala for over 12 years, but I did curve Peavey bass bins in Corners, which is also a W bin. It cuts off at about 90 hz. since it's a little bit longer in the horn section with not straight portion, full horn expansion. I had to boost that speaker by 10 db at 60 Hz. to get it to cross with my Monster Danley subs at about 40-60 Hz. Then I build my Quarter Pies (now owned by TromProf), which went flat to 50 without the "sealed resonance big doghourse in a tight open box" shenanigans, but a full 5 1/2 ft horn with a smaller back chamber vs. LaScala/Peavey 2.75/3.25 ft. horn. That's how you get an octave which requires less subbage for music, since it's a full OCTAVE of more real horn bass Quarter Pie Shape has it's own corner. I don't believe the spec in a real room I've ever owned, so 80 is a good compromise on a LaScala.

  36. Welcome to the Klipsch Forums. Your first post was a good one so no worries. I am not a tube guy so I can't be of help there. I did own 70's era LS and Khorns. Even though the LS's don't have ultra low bass what the do have is high quality bass, especially for music. If you listen to a string bass it has a resonance that is hard to reproduce electronically. Most subs will give that instrument a thump or maybe sound un-natural. The LS does such a fine job of playing acoustic instruments because of that folded horn woofer. It's a dramatic difference, I think you'll hear it right away. I have read others here comment that not all tube amps are the same sound and not all tube amps work well with LS's. There are several guys who have figured out the right combination. Hopefully they'll weigh in and you'll get some good advice so you don't have to go through the expensive process of re-inventing the wheel. I've found this Randy Travis video Forever and Ever Amen will show off your LS's male vocals and upright bass. https://youtu.be/sgJXbIP83A8?t=46

  39. I disagree, it will fit the bill very well for MUSIC. A sub that size with an 18 can be flat to 30 hz. with little EQ on the bottom and is a STEAL of a price. It adds almost 2 octaves of REAL, Low Distortion BASS to LSs. The lumber is worth the asking price for gosh sakes. Plus it won't need much power as it's pretty close to a LaScala in sensitivity. Stick it between 2 LaScalas with a good Sub Plate amp from Parts Express and rock you brains out!!!

  43. I received a very well boxed set of Dave A LMAHL Tweeters in the mail yesterday from Dave A. First off they are beautiful! The machining is gorgeous. My Forte 1s have been in my family for over 40 years and after installing Dave A,s LMAHL,s they have never sounded better. First impressions are WOW!!!!! Dave packed them well and included the DE10 Drivers, his machined aluminum lenses, a tube of Loctite some extra leads and great documentation on how to instal the tweeters in my Fortes. Per Daves suggestion I picked up some Lpads and wired them up ready to install as soon as I started to to work on the project. Removing the passive radiator made the instal much easier than removing the midrange horn. I decided to hold off installing the Lpads until I listened to the speakers to see if I found the tweeters to be too HOT without attenuating them down. My first impressions are that these tweeters take my vintage Fortes to another level and at first listen I don't find them too loud in my system. I had installed Bob Crites titanium tweeters about 5 years ago and liked the sound they presented but they are not as clear, clean and with the presence Dave,s LMAHL,s. They now sound like a much richer speaker than before. I have listened to Joni Mitchel, Neil Diamond, Peter Frampton Acoustic, Jethro Tull, etc -and damn - in less than an hour they sound truly magnificent. I'd love to hear the Forte iiis just to see if they sound as good as my Forte 1s with Dave A,s LMAHL,s. and...big thanks to Dave for all his help and creating such a great product! Cheers! I'l let you know after I get 24 hours or so on them if Im still as happy with them. If I find they break in and get too hot I will add the Lpads in but as of now I think they sound amazing as is.
