  1. I shot a lot of models with very shallow depth of field - usually with a 70-200 2.8 lens or a 300 mm 2.8 - when I wanted very sharp I would use an 85mm lens stopped down to f5.6 - f11

  2. Just spinnin some Eagles stuff lately. I've been thinkin about a couple tickets to see them in Columbus in April. I saw the show last September in Phoenix and knew they were doing a complete tour this year. I'm just wondering if they're taking everything they used on the 11 stop tour they did last year. If so it's going to be an amazing show. Of course there's a back story. A fem that slips out to jam nite was telling me she'd always loved them but never saw them. She slipped over for a spin of their "Live @ the Forum" box set the other day and was singing along with their songs so Mr Nice Guy stepped up. Found an excuse to hit them again and she's totally stoked to see them. Nah nuttin goin on but she still turns heads @ 60 so I guess it'll work. hahaha No clue what's going on the table later I'm still workin on my coffee! šŸ˜‚

  3. Thanks, you are correct of course, I have read that also. That is why i avoid picture LPs, but this one is so pretty šŸ˜. And there is a poster too. Out of just a few picture discs I have, I bought them new and none of them has issues being dirty and all of them are pretty quiet regarding acoustical noise. Also, I have not noticed them being particularly worse then the same albums I have in other formats. May be a bit "soft" sounding but nothing really to point at. Therefore I was actually surprised that this particular album has more dynamics on LP than on CD. That is the first in my collection.

  4. @parlophone1 New records can be very dirty so give it a double wash Picture discs for some reason are not as good in sound quality as black vinyl - based on the many posts I have read on the subject

  5. Lucky you šŸ˜„ After the bad LP, I immediately got the 2015 Remastered CD. Agree, this is a good CD but on my system LP sounded better, just if not those awful noise. I am very fond of this album, in my opinion one of the best Bowie ever recorded.

  6. I got a CD copy of Hunky Dory a couple of months ago, when the owners of one of the nearby record shops retired and everything was 50% off. I kept saving money until I ran out of money. Actually, the store closed after I only had time to clean out one of the two long aisles. The CD is great, and I wish I had bought it long ago.

  10. @parlophone1 my Stevie Ray Vaughan with the twister on it is awful to listen to also, never bought another after that experience. Now the swirled psychedelic ones from recent years do sound really good, definitely better than most other LPs.

  11. Yea, I know. By opinion of most people, this is definitely not art. But it was in our living room in the 60's-70's. Just for that sake I'd like to find it again. It was titled "Summer's End".

  15. 15 years ago or so I use to throw regular house parties with my Chorus II's usually cranked so loud in the living room that the bulk of the party would migrate to the kitchen / dining room to mingle and even there would have to talk kind of loud over the music. At that time I cycled through many solid state amplifiers and determined that 200wpc would only get me to about 80% volume without hearing distortion, they would simply run out of gas. It took 300 watts minimum to be able to crank them up as loud as I wanted and still sound clear.

  16. If you are listening over 95db, 100db you can be sure you are going to have hearing problems as you age. Horns are so clean you do have a tendency to increase the volume. If you cannot carry on a conversation while listening you can be sure you are listening too loud.

  20. Wall height varies I guess so we keep this basic and mounting to drywall sounds iffy so I drew this up. A 2x2 or similar brace center above mouth. Use good silicone for sealant.

  21. Quiet here for the most part. Weather coming with some snow and cold then warming up some. Who knows? I did spy w/my wittle eye on fb that The Museum is having a drawing for a pair of Khorns Serial Numbers 1 & 2 down in Hope in March. 800 tickets @ $25 each or 5 for $100. Might have to jump a lil instead watching the results and wondering if... #1 and 2? Prolly the closest as I'll get to owning them but maybe. Info in the PWK Birthday Bash thread 4

  23. I realized I didn't even participate šŸ™ƒ I just did my 1982 La Scala's Average level- 850mV Loudest level- 2.8v For an 8 ohm load this works out to 722mW for my average and 8 watts for maximum. I couldn't stand in the room for long on maximum. If you want to be prudent and go by the lowest impedance for the La Scala it dips down to maybe 4 ohms we'll say to error on the side of caution. That tells me to be absolutely safe to drive my speakers to that level at the lowest load impedance seen for the speaker I need a 16 watt amplifier. That's a bulletproof value that you I can safely assume my amp won't run out of steam on tough loads at that extreme volume level. I'll do my RB 81 ii's and Heresy's when I have time.

  24. Good call. My brother used PayPal for a raffle for his non-profit Ham radio club. PayPal seized the account proceeds stating it was gambling and a violation of the EULA. Litigation was required and PayPal ultimately capitulated but the club did not have the funds to two years.

Tucson got more weather than here. Laughing at the reporters. Drive 50 miles to get to some snow. All dressed in arctic gear and trying to make snow angels.

  29. Heat is the enemy of capacitors. Recently restored a receiver with new caps and most all if not all the capacitors were in tolerance but were replaced anyways being 45 years except for one board, tone control that was mounted upside down. All the caps on that upside down board were bad. Being upside down it held held heat generated by the receiver destroying them. Just showing how heat destroys electrolytic capacitors.

  31. I appreciate what you are trying to do as a Newcomer to this forum. I did all this even before I got Khorns right after high school. I built my own Stereo LED Voltage meter (using a Resistor Ladder Network) that bounced to the music, later adapted to a light show for my DJ stuff, so not need to do it at all since then. Been there, done that, 45 years ago after reading all the Klipsch Papers and joining the Audio Engineering Society. Upgraded to a Radio Shack version when I got Khorns, which showed 2 Watt PEAKS at really loud levels. End of testing and no need 45 years later since All of my speakers are 100-106 db sensitive as soon as they are plugged in!

  38. Just a thought: after trying various amps (no tubes, but some class A solid state) and going through many disappointments (reliability for example) Iā€™m now bi amping my system with some pocket class D amps. Really if you can try something like a Charlize or Trends TA2024 or TA2020 amp, on the high pass, if you are ready to give it some quality linear power supply and a little bit of tweaking (coupling caps etc) you might well forget about expensive tubes or high end transistors at least for a while. Iā€™m cheap, but my ears are good, and they are surprisingly well behaved little marvels!

  39. I think I did, in a round about way, in the 2nd post. Not sure I've heard the finest tube amps, but I've owned and heard several. I miss tubes from a visual point of view. Always fun to bask in the glow while listening in the dark. I don't miss hours of my life spent obsessing over what if there is just one more tube I've not tried and it is the magic one that parts the heavens. I fully realize that is my personality, not the fault of the amps/tubes. IMHO, @richieb is wise beyond his years (which are numerous) with all things amps. We joined the forum about the same time. He has probably had 5X the number of amps I have. Follow him down the amp trail and you probably can't go wrong. If you end up lost in the woods it will have been a fun trip.

  41. There's a new mini DSP, the mini DSP "FLEX", and according to measurements it offers much higher performances (actually, very near SOTA) than any previous iterations including the HD versions. Definitely something to consider for those who can't afford Xilica!

  42. LOL... I'm still alive and kicking. Little older, a few more wrinkles. I still have all my Reference 7s. I just have not been here in a VERY long time. You know, life changes, move from one place to another, divorce a long time ago, new things and hobbies. Yadee Yadaa. šŸ˜ I still have my Harman Kardon AVR7200... Which I would like to replace actually. Get something more modern that has updated technologies in it like bluetooth, wireless etc. Want to be able to go into the receivers settings without having to use some kind of RGB output. Would be nice to be able to use an android app to modify settings... But hey... That's an entirely different post!
