While I have no doubt this is true at least regarding distortion measurements, I have owned very powerful amps which sounded great at low volume levels. Both a Phase Linear 400 II and a QSC PLX1804 (900WPC @ 4 Ohm) sounded good at any volume. I am using the QSC amp on Quarter Pies at less than a watt on average. Overkill never sounded so good. Neither was quite as good as my 25 WPC class A DIY Pass amp, but that is IMHO in another class.3 points

I like them also but ultimately caps are way down on my list of sonic priorities. As long as my ears aren’t telling me they’re awful and I know they’re up to spec I’m ok with them. After putting the A/Sonicaps back in yesterday I can confirm that they easily meet the above criteria for me to enjoy them. Today they’ll get to play with the latest addition to the family , a McIntosh MC225 which never sounds less then great anyway.3 points

That is usually mentioned in the context of class AB amplifiers, in which one device amplifies the positive half of the waveform and another device amplifies the negative half, with a small region of overlap in-between. There is a slight anomaly in the region where one device hands-off to the other; it is called "crossover distortion" for intuitive reasons. That crossover distortion is constant, regardless of the amplitude of the waveform being amplified. So at low power levels the amplitude of the crossover distortion is larger, relative to the amplitude of the audio waveform, than it is at high levels. Therefore, as a percentage of the total output, the crossover distortion gets lower as the power gets higher. As the power output rises, at some point the amplifier starts to clip, at which point distortion starts to rise again. So there is a point where the overall distortion percentage, from all causes, is at a minimum. That is the "sweet spot" that you mentioned.2 points

Two for me. The main system is in the living room, and it's detailed below in my sig line. The second system is in the bedroom. It's a 4.2 setup. It gets the hand-me-downs from the living room system when I upgrade that. The front speakers are a pair of Audio Logic AL-750s, made in Concord, just north of Toronto. I bought them in 1980 and had the woofers re-surrounded in 2004. In 2006, I got La Scalas, and the Audio Logics went to the bedroom. They flank the dresser at the foot of the bed. The cabinets are quite similar in size and shape to Forté cabinets, at 36" high, 16" wide, and 12" deep, but the contents are very different. They're bass-reflex, with two 10" woofers and two 1" dome tweeters per speaker, crossed over at 1800 Hz. Hilariously, the claimed frequency response on the info plate behind the grille is 10-25,000 Hz. The low end starts to roll off at 70 Hz... The surround speakers are a little pair of bass reflex bookshelf main speakers from a Yamaha "home theatre in a box" that I bought in 2000 for the bedroom, which is where they have remained. They're 3-way, with 5" woofers. In a bedroom, unless you can place the subwoofer centrally, like at the head or foot of the bed, you'll need two subs, because the mattress and box spring absorb so much of the sound. I got one sub first, and placed it near the night table. It was very easy to tell/ hard to ignore that the sub was off to one side of the room, so a month later I bought a second matching sub for the other side. Yes, in this situation there was no mistaking where the bass was coming from, perhaps because not much bass comes from those little speakers they were originally matched with. The subs are 8" vented/bass reflex Yamaha models with 90 watt plate amps. interestingly, they have plenty of cooling fins, so they never feel hot, and convenient On/Off switches on both front and rear, unlike other much more powerful subs that I've owned that have no power switches and few or no fins, and feel warm even on Standby. One bedroom sub is on the left night table (can you tell that I live alone?), and the right one is on a little table near the bed. They went to the bedroom after I got a Paradigm 400 watt 10" sub for the living room system in 2005. Having the Main speakers at the foot of the bed and the Surround speakers and subwoofers near the head of the bed means that not much power is ever needed to deliver good bedroom-level sound, so the sound of the system is much less likely to travel through the floor, especially late at night or very early in the morning. Driving the bedroom speakers is the Yamaha RX-V750 AVR that I bought in 2005 for the main system. When I upgraded the main system's AVR to an RX-A2060 in 2016, the 750 headed to the bedroom. As for TVs, the living room has the 65" Panasonic plasma unit, while the bedroom gets the 49" Sony 4K TV. The Panasonic sits on a Belle Klipsch (the front Centre speaker), while the Sony sits at the foot of the bed, on a custom dresser with no mirror. If you can call a single powered speaker a "system", the bathroom has one. It's a SONOS The One, and I'm impressed with the sound from it. It's moisture resistant, too, so no worries from steamy showers. Even if I had the counter space, I wouldn't want to expose a Heresy to possible mould or mildew, so that little guy seems just right for the job.2 points

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! I am surprised to see that no one scrolled to the bottom of the page when purchasing tickets. The "Winning Ticket" showed still available until I just swooped it up a few minutes ago. 🙂2 points

Hello, I'm looking at a set of second hand Palladium P-17B's, these speakers have a mid range horn with a passband of (500Hz) 600hz - 3.4kHz This is even lower than the midrange horn of a Heresy (850Hz - 5000Hz) Is the Palladium midrange sound comparable to the Heresy ? Thanks ... Jef1 point

OK finally got some good steady numbers. Normal level is .05 VAC and LOUD is .49 VAC. Ended up taking some banana plugs and speaker wire and making a test lead that just plugged into the amp and multimeter. Worked great.1 point

Well its been about a month and half and I am still very please with this amp. Clean, clear, for the price of the kit, I'd be surprised to find a better deal on an amplifier. Sorry, but I couldn't provide much more. Im a fan of Crown, McIntosh, and Parasound and this amp runs with them all.1 point

Hell of a road trip. I'm going to use USHIP. Small chance I'll win, but a good donation regardless I feel.1 point

I'll be there and park three blocks away for free maybe even get a ten dollar t-shirt that * "says I was there, I saw then first". HA! Haven't had a radio station that played hard & heavy since Z-Rock left town in the 90s. Or friends that dug it. & the t's are going for what now $50 each? MTB seems so long ago today. * Cake sung that!1 point

Based on the comments above, I redid the measurements. First I used a variac to calibrate the Motorola analog RMS meter to 1V on the 1V scale. I set the levels for each driver to 0dB in the Xilica DSP. Then in order to get the meter to read more in the center of the range I used more power. Measured 70dBA, 402 Horn w/AXI 2050, .40V Measured 90dBA, 402 Horn w/AXI 2050, 3.20V Measured 70dBA, KPT-KHJ-LF, .28V Measured 90dBA, KPT-KHJ-LF, 2.1V For the 90dB levels I switched the meter to the 3V setting. So I think I am measuring correctly, but if not please advise.1 point

I'm not a great player, and know that about myself. I'm a moderately competent rhythm player and that is probably all I will ever be. But, that's okay. I still love getting together with friends and making music. I started as a drummer and still enjoy that. What I really enjoy, though, is hearing a talented player making one of the guitars I've built sing. When that happens, I'm happy to be on drums, bass, rhythm guitar...whatever. Heck, I'm fine with a woodblock or cowbell. I just want to be part of making the music.1 point

...that grinder has character and belongs in any garage I would LOVE to hear these outside when I accoutre the other bin! I have two buddies with some serious acres, and one has a tractor, so that may be the way to go. If they ever make it to the basement they are there for the next owner. I’ll have to do a mock-up with cardboard before I try and shoehorn them down the stairs. The bass really is quite phenomenal though, and Klipsch clean. You are front row at a concert with these. I would have never even considered half the speakers that have graced my humble abode over the years if it weren’t for this forum.1 point

At this point help is what we need the most in the morning... I will be at the park about 6 am to try and get the bucket truck running and at 7 we will start on the tent. i can use my truck to pull up the polls. Short of going after speakers, I will be at the park most of the day.1 point

Well as that system is now 11 years old...and it died due to error...I would think it to be a heck of a good unit. We had less than 1 % return with dead product. Any other returns were due to something else.1 point

No not at all. We allow for it but the electronics behind Bi-wiring point to there being no difference. Bi-amping can help at times, but very few. hook them up to a single channel of your amp and enjoy!1 point
