  1. Well today I unloaded what I got the other day. A set of KPT-456 with road gear package and covers from RAM audio years ago. A set of KP-301-2's with 115 subwoofers under them in virtually like new appearance. No I am not kidding. A mismatched set of KP-301-1's I need to work on. Opened one up today with rat fur on it I am going to pull off. Must have been re-coned as the cloth surround has no sealer on it like someone forgot to finish the job. And one of those nasty electrolytic caps I despise sitting there with a bulged end and had been hot enough to melt the plastic cover and hot melt glue. I see more of these in pro gear then anywhere but fail they do. Really happy to play with 456's again though they wont stay here long since they were spoken for before I got them. Last good two way meant for main sound and side fill with no Dolby junk. Mo bettah then 904's

  4. I appreciate your enthusiasm and you posting your results. A lot of us have done what you have. I know you got differences and improvements of what you’ve done, but I posts about your heightened wires and connectors claims, because this is a forum to discuss and sometimes disagreeing can be part of that, so you need to be ready to affirm and debate your claims and accept others opinions and findings that may not coincide with yours. It’s good you’re upgrading, enjoying doing them, and hearing improvements. It’s all good. Keep on keeping on.

  6. . I worked freelance but over the years also shot for a couple of nationally distributed magazines. Old School Rods and Car Culture Deluxe to name a couple. I shot a lot of vintage pinup and a lot of the top glam models for many years. I was the personal photographer for Hugh Hefners wife for a number of years and worked with a number of the top Playmates and adult film star actresses.

  9. We all have different sound setups and experience. I'm very new to this tube amp/Klipsch speaker thing. My experiments have been pretty simple, but very revealing.

  10. "Have I done experiments (tests) to see if it matters--no I haven't" That there is funny. I can tell you Klipsch did tests when changing to "high quality" internal wiring and it did not make the speaker worse. Psychoacoustic does not equal imaginary. Peace.

  11. So, did you ever fake a sick day or grumble about having to drag yourself in to work? ”Oh crap, another dreary day wasted with scantily clad supermodels and hot porn stars - I need to get out of this rut.”

  17. FWIW I think buying a 2 year old vehicle is probably the smartest way to go. Letting the original owner take the big hit . The hit isn't as much as it used to be but its still considerable . You do lose out on some warranty , which all you have to do is answer the phone the next time it rings and someone will be offering you one. I personally prefer the more optioned vehicle and once you've had it a little while no one will be more impressed with a 2022 vs a 2019.I tend to drive the wheels off a vehicle so for me , the enjoyment of the additional options over 10++++ years far outways the additional cost spread out over those same years. That being said I bought a new 2020 Duramax Chevy HD in 2019 but I really wanted the 10 speed vs 6 speed Transmission .I use it mostly for towing and it is amazing ! I started looking at used vehicles but it ended up at the time that I could go new for only about 5K more, gain a few new features and a new warranty. The market was different then. If you buy the used one just make sure you can get your money or most of it back out of it if you decide you don't like it . This way you can move on easily , won't be as easy with a new one . Bottom line .....Even I don't listen to me but those are my thoughts .

  19. Despite my satisfaction with the hybrid combination with my SS Powerstage Marantz SA11-S3, I could not let it go. The knowledge alone that there is still something going on, according to the moddys from the American DYNACO forum and subsequent euphoric enthusiasm of those who have done it,...it left me no peace in the head. The curiosity was too great , so I stared the moddys today . Origin Layout with WIMA Caps Completion with Mundorf 4 x 1.0 uF 450 V Mundorf Evo Caps , 2 x 0.1 uF Mundorf Supreme Silver/ Gold Oil Caps 400V , 2 x 0.1 uF Mundorf Evo Caps 450V & 2 x 0.1 uF 650V also Mundorf Evo Caps & 6 x Silver Micas 1000uF 500 V plus assembly. connected to my SS Power Stage After a few hours of operation it´s clear that the DYNACO PAS 4 is a worthy successor to the legendary high-end components from the 1970´s traditionell DYNACO Line of products. He plays now in the 4K$ League . I `m going to continue the moddys with ELNA Silnic II or Nichicon filter Elcos , I will see in some month ...

  20. In the end are you happy with what you hear and had fun getting there? That is the important thing. We will all pile on with our opinions and comments though because wire and capacitors demand we do so.

  21. Unless the wire is 8g and 54.5" long all superior sonic ability is lost. Quote from famous audio engineer and designer Jeffrey Medwin who has extensive research done on this very topic.. They say wire in the upper midwest. They say whyuhh in New Jersey and they say waarr in the south. Which sounds better? ;D

  22. I was just reading some stuff I said about wire 20 years ago. I'm deleting it as fast as I can. When you spend $1300 on silver cables, let me know. Those were used. Retail was like $3K. Never did the power cord thing. I regained by sanity before that got popular.

  25. I tell people not to change the wire unless they have to. The stock wire is tin coated annealed copper. It protects the copper from corrosion. Unless the jacket is damaged, it's hard to do better.

  27. Besides the abuse of the screens in these amps I forgot to mention that the plates can swing to near 2x B+ voltage, yes that's 1kV on the plates, sockets, wiring and output transformers. These amps need really high quality and robust power tubes for a decent lifespan, it's just the nature of the beast. Instead of copying old designs Bob should have just thrown ultralinear out the window with these amps and just ran pentode operation with a much lower screen supply. The amps would be much more tube friendly and reliable.

  28. The warmup module isn't for the power tubes, it's so the power supply capacitors don't get stressed during power on with SS rectifiers. You will need it so you don't damage the power supply capacitors during power up with SS rectifier.

  34. I've run my tube monoblocks very close to the speakers w extremely short speaker cables and long interconnects - and I've also run the amps on my rack with very long speaker cables and short interconnects. I could detect no noticeable difference. As such I have no preference - I'm OK with either setup.

  36. you are the winner in this USAAudiomart listing , as the prices of the Klipsch speakers are rising steadily , and these speakers look to be in great shape which is not very easy to find with 0 repairs to be done , plus the amp is worth at least 1500$, the speakers are worth 1500$ . this is a HIFI , top of the line 70's , practically 50lbs , wood case , phenomenal phono stage , high end integrated , superb preamp , yeah , I would offer 3k$ , the gear is clean , 1 owner ---how often will you find such a combo I would offer 2800$ up to 3k$-

  37. I just stumbled on this thread where a picture of me from 2012 appears in the first post. The OP identifies this as my listening room but it is not and has never been my main listening room. It was built as a HT room in my weekend house and, despite the constraints of its dimensions (small and almost square), it has become a fairly good-sounding (and -measuring) room due to the extensive use of bass traps and absorbent panels. FWIW.

  38. Dang... hey strangers. need to come in here more often, y'all have been jammin this past week. And @Bubo? You've been smoking hot! If I moved in next door, don't think I'd even need a stereo anymore. Been years since I've heard that original? "Spooky" Pretty Reckless remind me of Concrete Blonde on an night they were edgy. Thought I'd give a listen to that high priced, out of production (I presume) Billy Strings today and it is good. I recommend the whole listen & I think y'all know rock is my main sustenance.

  39. We sold 5 Million tickets (less the 6 remaining), which is why it took a whole 10 days to sell them. (The real numbers are on the previous page in an "Update" post I did if anyone is interested). But you are a member, and you have tickets (you were in the first 10 to buy, on the first day). Are you asking for a friend? As mentioned in the "Sold Out Post" above, there are 6 tickets left. I held back a half-dozen on the off-chance a Member somehow didn't see the offering, or got busy, or whatever. I will have no trouble getting rid of the remaining 6, no Officer or Trustee has purchased any yet (including me), even though they are eligible, so if there is one or two left I'm sure they will get swallowed up. Thanks to everyone who entered. I believe it's about 190 individuals purchased tickets, from all across the US, and two international folks. Over half of them donated either the credit card fees, or even additional amounts. The Museum will have raised close to $17,000 and some lucky dude is going to win a really bad *** pair of speakers. Does anyone have an extra ticket they wanna sell? I'm looking for a miracle.

  41. I'll just make a drive-by comment and say that there's more than one way to skin a cat. In a crossover network, as with any network, there are a number of parameters that can be optimized. Fully competent designers may disagree not only on what to optimize, but on how to optimize it. That doesn't make any of them right or wrong, it just means that they approach the problem differently.

  42. "In God we trust...everyone else bring data." Do you have some polar sonograms of the differences? I would be extremely interested in seeing that data. That's a lot of work that can be shared or perhaps leveraged with others tackling the same MEH design problems. Some of the above leads me to believe that there is a fair amount of guesswork still occurring without a full study of the effects of where to put the woofer/midrange ports and how big/their shape should be. (I.e., if what you say is true, then Danley isn't putting the ports in the corners of the horn for polar consistency purposes--which I do find both interesting and hard to believe.) There is quite a lot going on in terms of frequency-dependent reflections (like optics) and less-than-half-wavelength volume and area support of the developing waves going (like horns operating near their axial 1/4 wavelength frequency or operating loudspeakers below the transition frequency of a room), with a seamless transition between the two right around these extra (non-throat) ports. I suppose you have found that crossing the lower frequency drivers to the higher frequency ones actually require a bit of overlap (or at least a "zero lap" on the 1/4 wavelength from the throat entrance plane (i.e., not the acoustic center of the attached driver). I believe that each MEH DIYer is rolling their own, and not really discussing the tradeoffs of where to cross. I've found that crossing the higher frequency driver right at or just below (in frequency) to the natural bounce frequency of the lower frequency drivers smooths out the phase and SPL response, and the polar response (to some degree). 43. I have been thinking a bit about this comment of yours: I have chosen to delete some of which I hade written here before, to prevent any misunderstandings or controversy. I hope the remaining writings still make sense. Maybe you were referring to all those "small" synergy´s on diyaudio? As I see it, the big-synergy-horn-approach is the best technology to reduce the negative effects off the room on the sound. And in many ways I see your MEH-approach as going to the extremes/limits of the technology! You aim to fully utilize boundery-effekts and directivity down to under the Schroeder-frequency, and that makes perfect sense to me. But it seems that the size needed for that is not often accepted by most people! I think you have also stated before, that people don´t know what they miss!! But it is the only logical approach in my view. Any way, I try to view the various constructions in their context, take what ever I can learn from them and leave the rest. I´m not in this to safe money, but to avoid common compromises. I am still not finished with all my house-projects, one of them being clearing a basement-room to become my synergy-workshop! So for the moment I have to do as good old Albert Einstein: Stick to thought-experiments! 😉 I have been looking at the SH96 that you posted pictures of, and wondered what the difference in horizontal dispersion would be, if the woofers are mounted on the Horizontal horn-walls (like in the SH96, but without reflex-ports!). Would the artifacts of the off-axis-ports move from the horizontal to the vertical plane (ceiling and floor), and make for a more clean horizontal dispersion? I guess one way to find out would be, to build a 60x60 synergy (without reflex-ports) and measure horizontal and vertical coverage? That was todays question to the professor 🙂 Steffen

  45. The III had too much cabinet resonance for my tastes (of which most owners of them either denied, did not notice or actually preferred). I have found getting honest, critical assessment of ANY Klipsch product futile here on the fanboi site. I would love to get a non-hyped, honest DETAILED comparison between the III and IV, other than "it's better". My hope is to one day get a Heritage design that has a completely sonically "invisible" cabinet. A Cornwall or La Scala that completely disappears like the best British monitors or electrostats would be what I am after. Right now the closest I can get is Forte I and it is not nearly close enough. I would love to audition a AL5 or Cornwall IV in my home, but I would feel guilty returning them if I did not like them. Due to the shipping costs would be damaging to the store that allowed for this.
