  1. Also play bass. Fun thing about that instrument is that we almost never hear that 40Hz fundamental, most cabinets start rolling off below 80-100Hz, and uprights roll off far above that. Probably what gives the LaScala that 'texture', it really brings out the harmonics that are the bass sound.

  2. OT New pc is built, has been for days... getting win11 to half-way cooperate took two days. The software for the mb is so convoluted I had to wipe and re-do everything yesterday on a new ssd. The new motherboard has the best sound I've ever had on a pc. Roy Buchanan, Alan Parsons then Johnny Guitar with flat response just proved that to me! It's got the Realtek S1220 with an ESS® ES9023P. SN out is 120dB, up to 32-Bit/192kHz! In other words my sound just got upgraded. Will attempt the DTS software next. Thanks for the great testing material! *stole that from Tweaktown's site @Full Range I've got all of those except that particular Genesis... Good List from back then @MeloManiac ...back to our regularly scheduled programming

  3. I've always appreciated the engineering and audio/sonic wizardry as put out by the Klipsch and B&K Type AA x-overs in my La Scalas, if not so much the aesthetics. As the boards are normally mounted inside the cabs, appearance is not really an issue. But I recently got the urge to bring them up topside just for my own personal viewing enjoyment and decided a "makeover" was in order to give the x-over boards a bit more visual appeal. I acquired a pair of hand-made "cutting" boards, mounted the x-over elements in their most suitable locations, drilled the appropriate holes, and finally made the wire connections mostly underneath to tidy up the looks. While I can't claim to be a craftsman compared to others of you on this Forum, I thought the project turned out pretty decent. Here are pics for your judgement - thanks for reading. Happy listening!

  9. Only that high "efficiency" (high sensitivity) "goes with" other characteristics that minimize certain kinds of distortion, such as modulation distortion. In speaker design, there are more than three desirables, but three are related, as depicted in Hoffman's Iron Law: Relatively small size Deep, good bass High efficiency Pick two; you can't have all three. For example: Small, airtight acoustic suspension speakers must have large cone excursion to produce adequate bass, which produces unwanted high modulation distortion. Because of the need for large cone excursion, these speakers are of very low efficiency. Large speakers can produce good, deep bass without much cone excursion (1/16 inch, or less, in the case of the Klipschorn, the Jubilee, and various huge speakers), so there can be very little modulation distortion. Also, since so little excursion is needed, these speakers can be very efficient. Naturally, if you have a small room and sit close to the speakers, you will need less power than with the opposite.

  13. Well, that's not always the case. Especially highly efficient speakers need an amp that makes very little distortion when played very quietly. But more than just a few transistor amps only sound good when they are much too loud than is the need of high efficiency speakers. That's why efforts like Nelson Pass's with the amps called "first watt".

  20. If you are going to go to so much loving effort, try to hear what it sounds like when you unscrew one of the two diodes and thus interrupt the diodes connected in parallel. In my case, I hear more pleasant silky highs that sound less brittle. Unless you have SPL of a discotheque.

  21. I once heard that stamped sheet metal chassis can be rotated 180 degrees after years. Because a heavy magnet could deform the sheet metal by gravity, and you just let the force act the other way around by rotating it. This way the voice coil stays centered. At least you can't go wrong with this measure, and we do have stamped chassis in the original Heritage speaker. Whether it is really necessary I do not know.

  25. Don´t have the earlier productions, discovered Fela and his son Femi in the early 1990´tees . He has an interesting biography Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti (born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti; 15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997), also known as Abami Eda, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer, political activist, and Pan-Africanist. He is regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat, an African music genre that combines traditional Yoruba percussion and vocal styles with American funk and jazz. At the height of his popularity, he was referred to as one of Africa's most "challenging and charismatic music performers". described him as a musical and sociopolitical voice of international significance. Kuti was the son of a Nigerian women's rights activist, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. After early experiences abroad, he and his band Africa 70 (featuring drummer Tony Allen) shot to stardom in Nigeria during the 1970s, during which he was an outspoken critic and target of Nigeria's military juntas.[4] In 1970, he founded the Kalakuta Republic commune, which declared itself independent from military rule. The commune was destroyed in a 1978 raid. He was jailed by the government of Muhammadu Buhari in 1984, but released after 20 months. He continued to record and perform through the 1980s and 1990s. Since his death in 1997, reissues and compilations of his music have been overseen by his son, Femi Kuti.

  32. We had a great spring week, averaging 68 F and 12 hours of sunshine daily, wonderful. I use these days to go to Holland for a few hours every day. To Venlo , a nearby Dutch border town. Venlo is a Dutch city and municipality in the province of Limburg. As of January 1, 2022, the municipality had 102,128 inhabitants. The river Maas flows through Venlo. The city is about 1 hour drive away. Many groceries are cheaper here and also especially fresh, so I like to shop here. Especially fresh here is the fish and of course all the delicious cheeses. The Dutch are a totally laid back lovely people, I love spending time there. Some impressions ...... Of course, because it is legal in the Netherlands, I occasionally visit a Dutch coffeeshop. Looks like that " Snoop Doggy Dog " was here as well

  34. Stealing from something I once read - there is a reason music sounds best with the lights dimmed late at night - without the distraction of sight, our sense of hearing gets to focus on the music, not the inputs in the room. It's the same reason why PowerPoint presentations are horrible ways to convey information - the presence of words on a slide causes the viewer to read the slide (visual) instead of listening to the presenter (audio). Because of this - I agree with others - focus on the music aspect and let the movies fall where they may because when there is a movie on, you're going to be focusing on the visual. When you're just listening to music, you'll truly focus on the audio.

  38. By the way, I´ve been thinking about getting a pure stereo amp for some time now. My first choice was one of the recent mid-tier Yamahas. But now I my go the vintage way, seen a lot of nice rigs lately, for pairing with my Heresys and TT. I like this one a lot, Kenwood KA 8150:
