  5. No No No ...... Today I felt like a master mechanic who has disassembled and reassembled an engine in his workshop. Was almost 12 hours non-stop in action. As well I installed and aligned the serviced MA 505 MK II Tonearm. You have to be able to suffer. But ..it is done ..all 10 Pick-Ups are now mounted on 5 SME Headshells for the 3009 and 5 Micro Seiki Headshells for the MA 505 MK II and excact adjusted. Would not have been possible without the Dr. Feickert Protractor 3 D adjustment template. Currently I enjoy the Goldring 900 SE on the SME 3009. Irre ..plays on the level of the Sonus Gold Blue, can hardly believe it ! Perfect ! Some pics from the Goldring 900 SE on the SME 3009

  7. L is the second album by Godley & Creme. It was released in 1978. At 34 minutes, it is less than a third as long as the group's previous effort, the ill-received triple concept album Consequences (1977). Despite this, L was also not received well commercially. The songs contain much variation and artistry, dissonances, complex time signatures and melodies, poetic lyrics, and some echoes from Frank Zappa's Over-Nite Sensation (1973). Zappa is even name-checked on the song "Art School Canteen." The album was played almost completely by Godley and Creme, except for saxophones, and a brief vocal cameo by Paul Gambaccini. The lyrics retained the satirical stance of some 10cc material, with songs such as "The Sporting Life" and "Art School Canteen", which deal with suicide and art school angst.

  8. The best Klipsch speakers are the ones we own! I currently only have Heresy IIs. I love them... smooth, dynamic... Have had two different pairs of older La Scalas. Incredible speakers! Great a low volume as well as crankin'. A pair of MWM bass cabs with LS mids ad tweets. A sound that is superb! Some have said way cleaner, more dynamic bass than Jubilees. But they are bigger, uglier... I REALLY miss those... Enjoy what you have... that's the most important thing.

  9. I never thought the Academy was a great match for any of the 3-way Klipsch speakers. When the era of Dolby Digital surround started (probably around 1992), I had original Forte speakers for the mains in our first home theater. I was looking to get my first center speaker and had the following experience. At the time Klipsch only had three speakers marketed as center channel speakers: the KG 1.2V, the KG 2.2V, and the Academy. At first, I tried going as inexpensive as I thought I could reasonably go and purchased a KG 2.2V. This speaker was totally inadequate to match the Fortes. It sounded nothing like them and could not “keep up” due to much lower sensitivity/max output. So, I traded that in for an Academy. I did not find it to be a sonic match for the Fortes either (despite Klipsch marketing it as such). It was definitely a much better center than the KG 2.2V but still didn’t work for me. It sounds more like a match for the original kg series, not the Forte family. From the moment I started using it, I was aware of the sound character change in the center as sounds panned across the front. It was very disconcerting and was a constant distraction. Soon after I got the Academy I went back to the dealer and made a deal to trade it in for a single Heresy II. The 3-way design was a much better match for the 3-way Fortes. I was very happy with that decision. Just recently I acquired a KLF-C7 for another system. So, I did a quick comparison using KLF-30 mains with the KLF-C7 and my Heresy II. The KLF-C7 is a decent match for 3-way Klipsch mains. It's definitely not as good a match as a Heresy but it's a better match than the Academy in my opinion. I imagine the KV-4, which is very similar to the C7 but with a larger tweeter diaphragm, might also be a decent match as well.

  11. I never understood the desire to run multiple speakers playing the same channel signals. Yes, you can achieve higher SPL, but you are introducing other issues. Correct stereo imaging depends on the amplitude, phase/timing, and directional information coming from each channel arriving at your ear without losing that information or adding anything to it. This will allow your ear/brain system to properly process it and turn it into a stereo image in your head. In turn, this allows you to locate sounds between the speakers that are a reasonable reproduction of what was captured by the microphone or created at the mixing console. Ideally, this means there should only be one early arrival of the sound of each channel at each ear. This is one reason why people treat their rooms to eliminate the early reflections. However, when you add more speakers reproducing the same channel you are now intentionally adding multiple early arrivals at each ear. This causes confusion for the ear/brain system and can muddy or destroy the imaging. Another downside to having multiple speakers per channel is that there will be interference between them depending on the distance between them and the frequencies being reproduced (a.k.a. comb filtering). Peaks and dips can be present at different locations. If you want higher SPL, just get a more capable pair of speakers. In case you haven't guessed by now, I'd recommend just one pair of Forte II.

  16. Thanks to you CW. I searched KP-301s on Google every morning for 7-8 months and that lucky morning I saw your alert. They ended up being about 2 hours away. I wish I’d have seen the comment about the $250 on Facebook but I’m very happy as it stands. Full restoration in progress. Thanks.

  19. Weather is in the low 60's and dropping at night. Think I'll take tomorrow off too! Gotta get 'em when you can get 'em. Had to laff HARD today. Oldest is a bowler and a good friend of the owners who in addition to that have a bar w/pizza for in house or home delivery. So the bar is huge and actually has a stage for bands. So I find out a few months ago she's helping them market the place as a smaller venue w/good entertainment whether is rock or whatever. So we talked about it and I hooked her up. Tonight she's got some group coming in from somewhere outta state to play. 750 tickets gone in 3 days when she announced the show. hahaha The Fire Department said they might be down to count heads so they're gonna play the game. 750 ppl and employees only. No backdoors, blah, blah. I've never heard of these guys but Duckburg is their only stop in 3 states so ppl from everywhere are coming in to town. She's trying to field all the calls and hook ppl up w/lodging etc. hahaha and double HA! 😂 Tomorrow I'll tell her she's more suited to be a cruise director on the "Love Boat." 😂 I sent her a text this morning and she called me at 1 telling me she was sorry but her phone had been blowing up all day. hahahaha She is prolly puking right now... An hour before HER FIRST show... I'm laffin cause I know it'll go off w/o a hitch but SHE doesn't. Tomorrow she'll be smiling and bubbly. My thoughts? "She's learnin! 😂 Deep down inside though I know it'll go off perfectly. The owner is even gonna tell her about 4-5 different times that I was "over there" just to give her something else to do. hahahaha Maybe some roses tomorrow for her curtain call. Maybe.. lol

  21. Hah! I knew a guy who had a can/bottle opener (sometimes laughingly called a Church key) taped to his plastic tonearm. My LPs never got near that record player. And there was the guy who kept the LP jackets in one pile and the records in another pile. Teenagers, lol... And then there were our twenties. I had to replace many of my records from the party years.

  28. I ended up buying these KP-301s. They were fairly close and I’ve been looking for a set for almost a year. They are pretty beat up and need work. I’ve stripped them down and am almost done sanding and filling the chips and dents. I have an email in to Crites re crossover repair kit and new diaphragms. One had a JBL E-140 -8 in place of the original K48 woofer. Not sure what to do about that. Anyway thanks for the Alert! I finally found a set of KP-301s.

  29. @Josh in DC Welcome to the forum! I doubt if it would help the newer ones. New and old, they have a flange that is screwed down. In the old days, when the horns were screwed down, PWK couldn't pick up any resonance with his equipment. Even when the Forte I was premiered, one critic, having not noticed any horn distortion, said, "so much for horn distortion." But, who knows ... you might try it if you are energetic and willing. If you do, please do one only, then have someone put the two speakers next to either, cheek by jowl, almost touching, when you are out of the room and not cheating (not looking). Then return and listen extensively to each speaker one at a time. Then have your friend either reverse the speakers, or not, without telling, and then please compare the two. This would be a "single blind" experiment, so to approach a "double blind," have your confederate either leave the room before you re-enter, or wear a bag over his/her head. This would have one step less confirmation bias than what the guy on YouTube did, but, of course, is not as refined as many repeated trials with control for order effect and carry over effect. Please let us know your results. I suspect at least some placebo effect in the YouTube results. By the way, IMO, the term is "damping," not "dampening." A ton of audiophiles make this mistake, including the guy on YouTube. An amplifier has a damping factor. Car and bike suspensions have damping. Some old tone arms had viscous damping. In my recollection, including in physics class, it was "damping" from when I became an audiophile (late '50s) until about 1967, when Star Trek erroneously used the term "dampening." Then, they did it again. And again. Just as when CNN mis-defined "Factoid," Orville Redenbacher corp. mis-defined "overachiever," practically every screenwriter, novelist and journalist used "subconscious," over the usually preferred "unconscious," etc., etc., the acirologie multiplied and lasted and lasted. One reason I will continue to use "damping" is that I can only too clearly visualize what an audiophile would look like while "dampening" his components.

I went into my local art supply shop looking for some watercolor paper. ”Excuse me, do you have any watercolor paper in landscape, I can only seem to find it in portrait?” ”Oh, I’m sorry, we don’t usually stock watercolor paper in landscape but we could order some if you would like.” ”That would be great, how long does that usually take?” ”Not long, the turnaround is usually pretty quick.”

  39. It’s a JHS pedals “The Clover” which is an updated clone of the Boss FA-1 FET preamp. It ads a mid EQ knob and an XLR out and the EQ section is switchable in and out of the signal path so it can be used as a straight gain boost. The Edge from U2 has used the Boss FA-1 a lot and they are worth some money. @Marvelhas an FA-1 but we haven’t had a chance to compare the two.

  40. A few years ago, I saw Buddy Guy play here. To my surprise, he had no pedals for most of the show. He did have a wah pedal to do Voodoo Child (Slight Return), but that was it. Of course, it's possible that he had some kind of rig behind the curtain, maybe with his guitar tech operating it, but it sounded like he was playing it straight, and he sounded really good. However, there's only one Buddy Guy. I've seen a picture of Jimi Hendrix in the audience at a Buddy Guy show, and he looked really attentive. Of course, Jimi went on to use lots of effects. I've read that he was one of the earliest guitarists to use an octave(r) pedal.

  44. MyRef FE LM3886 based chip amp LM4780 based integrated chip amp-audio sector boards. KT88 SET - parks audio clementine board These are the amplifiers I have built over the last ten years. It blows mind how quickly that time went by. The first amp is actually the second shown. It is the LM4780 based audio sector amp. this is basically 2 LM3886 in one package. This was when I thought I needed lots of power. The second was the MyRef type amp. This is a great amp and I would definitely like to build another some day. It had noise issues that I could not resolve. The case is currently in process of becoming an F5 (or at least has been in process for 5 or more years!). The third is a KT88 clementine SET. This has been my daily driver for several years. This is a fantastic amp that powered my La Scala clones with ease and now powers the dual heil wave guide on top of the Scala clone bins. I would love to build many other versions of this amp but the boards are out of print. Someday I will build point to point. I have a 300B project that is also half done sitting on my desk. My original goal was to build a nice DIY hifi item at least every year. Seeing how long the KT88s have been in use, I may need to consider replacing them at some point.
