  1. I do not claim to have golden ears. I am a 67 year old Man, who cleaned roofs for most of my life, so I was never exposed to excessive sound levels, and always wore ear protection at Concerts. I have never heard any differences at all in sound with various speaker cables. Yet I have some really Fat ones from MIT that look like large snakes, on my floor. I have compared these big *** MIT Cables with Zip Cord, and never heard any differences. Then WHY do I have them ? Because my good friend will flat turn off when listening to my system with Zip Cord! In fact, though I use a Yamaha Receiver as my preamp to drive whatever amp I am using at the time, if my friend is coming over to listen, I have to put an old 2 channel preamp that does NOT use any OP Amps,, because if I don't, he will refuse to listen to my system with me! Of course, he does not come over much, and my Cat thanks him! The large thick MIT Speaker Cables have literally scared my poor Cat to death! I have seen her forget the cables are there, see them, then go several feet in the air vertically! They scare her! One day, he came over, only to discover the amp I had connected did not have a power card as thick as a fire hose hooked up to it. So yes, I have one of those, I just forgot to hook it up that day! I installed the Huge Power Cord, yet he still refused to listen, saying the power cord needed a few days to "season". LOL, he lent me some interconnects once that had arrows on them, to tell you the direction of current flow. Just to mess with him, I told him I had the arrows going towards the pre amp, LOL He told me that I "ruined his interconnects", until I told him I was just messing with him! He is a good guy, and a longtime friend, and not a stupid person either. But I almost feel sorry for him ......

  2. Thanks to whoever posted a picture of Paul Klipsch's midrange horn lamp for this inspiration (@dtel maybe?) . I made a set out of some K700 heresy midrange horns. I made one for me and one for my dad for father's day (couldn't post until after since he checks he forum). Sent from my SM-G781V using Tapatalk

  3. Hi @JohnJ and everybody I discover this post on the CD, I will put some specimen of my collection the next days. I have this TASCAM CD200SB pro player, with a CD-specific TEAC player base, not for computer CDroms. It has direct access to Track Select ranges and I have a small SMSL Sanskrit 6TH DAC that I bought from used $35: the sound is very good!

  6. Correct. Those are very old caps, but they are probably fine as long a they aren't leaking. One of the guys on here used SEM auto paint in a spray can... very, very light coats, just enough to cover the gray. DJK (rip) would use black liquid shoe polish. What ever you use, go easy on the application.

  7. So are you accusing me of being an unattentive listener? I find that very hurtful and triggering. I can go to Audiogon if I want to be treated like this.

  8. Exactly. I have never berated anyone who says they can't hear a difference in cables. I only take issue with the ones who say no difference exists. If you can't hear the improvement, that's $$ in your pocket and good for you. But don't paint with a broad brush and think everyone should be like you. We have a member here (who will certainly be along shortly) who says all modern amplifiers sound the same. And yet he chooses to own a multi thousand dollar McIntosh amp when a 500.00 receiver should sound the same. It sounds like I'm making that up, but it's true...

  16. I also have excotic speaker cables with a conductor resistance of 0.00144 ohms per running meter . Their task is to conduct electricity, to transport the information from the amplifier to my speakers without any kind of discoloration, because I want to hear my equipment and not cable sound. It does not exist, cables don´t have component status. Even if you use silver cables, they do have higher conductivity than copper cables, by increasing the cross section of a copper cable you can achieve the same conductivity as a silver cable.

  20. A few years ago I had a job interview at Harman. I got to speak with their chief amplifier designer, so I asked him what he does differently when designing a consumer amp for Harman Kardon vs. a pro amp for Crown vs. an audiophile amp for Mark Levinson. He answered that the circuits were the same, he would just choose parts that were appropriate for each application -- e.g., 1% resistors for Levinson vs. 5% for Harman Kardon, bigger heat sinks for Crown, etc.

  21. My main reason for going to Audiogone, way gone that is, is for the priceless satire masquerading as serious thoughts. Seasoned all knowing "audiophiles" lay down the righteous laws of audio only they can fully understand as they leave their price tags discretely displayed on their audio gear. Being a dirt behind the ears kind of dude I have had fun over there at times poking the pretentious with my fine zip cord cable management and Crown XLI trash commercial amps that I so arrogantly claim are worth while. As a bonus you also get people over there who think bags of tumbled Tourmaline affixed to your cables make your setup sound better. I have heard a lot of systems and elect to stay with the right choices of economical gear and build parts of my systems since I can't buy what I want. As crazy as it may sound I have a a fair number of repeat visitors here to listen to the Super MWM's. Zip cords sprawled on the floor and big ugly duratex coated boxes and no fancy electronics except the Xilicas. Hearing is believing though

  24. Do not feel sorry for your friend. You may think he's a fool, which is sad, because he is not. Using an AVR as a two channel preamp in what is meant to be a quality two channels stereo system is like putting an old Chevy motor in a Ferrari. It sucks, and it makes no sense. Yes, a discrete 2 channels preamp DOES sound better. If you cannot hear the difference, fine, but then that's you. Not your friend being an idiot. Speaker cables in my system make a HUGE difference. But, MIT isn't a very good brand (sorry). A high price isn't a guarantee for better sound. Yes, power cords (just like any cable) need a few days to break in. Why? You may dismiss it as foolishry, again, and decide to mock it and make fun of your friend, or you can google the various explanations. Has to do with the dielectric "charging" or something like that. I have experienced it with all my cables. The more complex the cable, the more obvious. I have found that silver plated, teflon dielectric wires take more time than basic copper wire, and you can hear it much more easily. Go ahead, mock me, make a fool of me, I won't change my mind about it. Brand new cables can sound harsh and congested, while a broken in cable will sound MUCH smoother and open. Again, very easy to hear, if you are a serious listener with a good revealing system. Very easy to verify, as well: put a well used cable on one channel, and a brand new identical cable on the other, I guarantee you will have a hard time getting an even, coherent, well centered stereo image. If you hear what a coherent stereo image is, of course. Cable directionality? Yes, it has to do initially with the ground end. But then, as you use your brand new cable, it breaks in in THAT position, and using it reverse kinda screws the break in, and it has to be done all over again (not a big deal, and no it won't destroy the cable, obviously, but the cable will not sound at its best for a while. Again, some cables can be more sensitive to this, depending on the geometry and materials used. That's what your friend was scared about. Ask him. Again, if for you cables don't make a difference, you will dismiss this as foolish. Your loss, if you ask me, not your friend being an idiot). I have an actively tri-amped system, home made, kind of LaScala on steroids with 2inch mid drivers and a larger bass horn, with two active subs for the lows. That's three times more cables than your usual system. I can tell you, being active let's you hear more things, and the more cables you have, the more they impact the sound. I didn't spend fortunes, but I would never ever swap my cables for something else. I'm getting a little tired of the constant mockery about people using "fancy" wires or high-end electronics. We aren't idiots. We don't have crazy amounts of money to waste - I certainly don't! Has it ever occurred to you those "fools" might just have better ears? or just listen to their system with more attention to little details? You might just be enjoying the music and that's fine, probably even something one could envy, but does that make all the MANY audiophiles who find differences in the "small" details FOOLS? Have you ever tried to research WHAT could possibly cause those perceived differences under a different bias than "it's all just bullshit"? Because if you do, you might find interesting information, and you might see things differently.

  26. if you're driving a Rambler you might want that... Not that they didn't build a few nice cars....SCRambler, AMX. went to Tucson today. Got my Yammy back with a clean bill of health. They said everything is in spec and should last me many years. I was on a mission. Left the house at 8AM. Stopped at the hardware store and WhiteElephant... was at the shop to get my amp at 10:10AM...Home at 11:30AM. Tucson is 60miles and then you get to drive surface streets... stop lights and traffic.. In the shop... They have a pair of birch LS. Pretty. They had a pair of Heresy, too. This is stuff they have se vende. The LS are $2500. I didn't ask about the Heresy. The kid at the desk seemed rather fond of both. Particularly the LS...I can understand. He looked at me incredulously when I told him I could stuff that pair of LS in the little car.... I have pictures.

  27. I mentioned in another thread that it appears Klipsch liked to have around 3mh inductance across the K-55M, hence the different parallel inductor values for the T4A and T5A. Seems to me that, in order to get the same 3mh using a 3636, one would need to use a 3.5mh inductor in parallel with taps 0-3 of the 3636??? I measure 20mh between taps 0-3 on my 3636.

  28. Beginning to think the ball is deformed. It has what clearly appears to be a flat spot on it. Helped the wife with several of her projects today, at the end of day, decided I wanted to tinker and I'm about over trying to save this darn ball. What do I have....begin looking around. I bought a bit and some toggle bolts the other day, then I found a bit I had that was roughly 5/8 but more important, maybe 12/15" long... started looking for my extension, and when I found it, noticed it had a wood boring bit. So, I've got a wood boring bit (the kind that pulls itself into the wood) Milwaukee 1/2" right angle drill and an extension that just happens to let all this work. Hmmm...can the pointed bit 'catch' the ball? YEP! Can it drill into it and can the auger part drill into it? YEP!! Now I'm getting excited. The ball at one point, rotated WITH the bit. So the ball was rotating in the bore. I'm feeling this is good as it's not bound. So I start pulling the bit out. I get shavings crawling up the extension then bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and nothing, no force against the torque... it's like the bit snapped? Nope. Turns out the bolt that holds the chuck on, snapped so the drill was moving but the chuck wasn't. The ball is still stuck in the bore BUT it's much closer to the exit. It's gotta be close enough that once I get this chuck fixed, I'll probably be able to finish the hole and then I'm thinking take a sawzall to weaken it up and possibly cut it into quarters or maybe half. We'll see but tomorrow, I have to order the bolt to fix this (happens to be a left handed thread to boot)

  35. What a great movie in so many ways Lazenby pulled it off in great fashion Don't recall why they didn't bring him back Armstrong hit it out of the Park on the theater sound system where I saw it. Don't understand how Dandy Moore ended up with the job and each farce worse than the previous one. Live and Let Die was great, then it fell off a cliff.

  36. LOL,, I really have my friend going, now that I showed him my equipment all grounded to an outside 6ft copper ground rod, driven right into the ground! I went over his house to hear his new Dac, made an ugly face, and told him it sounded like Chit! LOL, I told him because his system was not earth grounded, there were all kinds of powerful transmitters in the area, mixing their signals with his audio! LOL

  39. Funny people get this wrong all the time…. The reason some cables will have a direction indicator is to let you know which end of the cable has the shield connected to signal ground so you know to use that end on the low impedance output source when driving the next components input for best external noise rejection. miketn

  44. Hey Mike, I always thought it was about Cobain too. Another from the same era, not being a dead-head (only saw them once) never had copies of concerts I attended. Except this one, from the same neighbor that I recorded all the cds I made that year. These two aren't bootlegs, they're Official Bootlegs put out by Pearl Jam that year! Audience was BRUTAL! Just about literally booed Sonic Youth off the stage. Eddie chastised us all a little when he came out and started his banter. Good show, my bud was ripped and upset that it wasn't as good as Metallica had been earlier that year.... apples to oranges, not the same food group, however I put it didn't fly. I dug it though, NW grunge the way it was supposed to be and by one of the originals! behind the stub 13 is Go, 14 is a Keep on Rockin' in the Free World cover
