  3. I like this guy's style. He's got a nice converted barn for music, and a Binaural head to record them playing. Doesn't waste words either. 👍

  4. Ahhhhhh back to reality! A lil ELP change up! Much better! Tarkus is the second studio album by English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in June 1971 on Island Records. Following their 1970 European tour, the group returned to Advision Studios in London, in January 1971, to prepare material for a follow-up. Side one has the seven-part "Tarkus", with a collection of shorter tracks on side two. Tarkus went to number one in the UK Albums Chart, peaked at number 9 in the US, and reached number 12 in Canada on two occasions totalling 4 weeks.

  5. Just hangin out! Middle Man is an album by Boz Scaggs that was released by Columbia Records in 1980. Scaggs hired members of the band Toto as session musicians and shared songwriting credits with them, returning to the commercial, soul-influenced rock of Silk Degrees (1976). The album reached No. 8 in the Billboard 200 album chart, and two singles reached the Billboard Hot 100: "Breakdown Dead Ahead" at No. 15 and "Jojo" at No. 17.[2] Nope, Boz didn't last too long... 😂

  11. The instructions also say to choose "with External Pre-Main Amplifier" or "with External Main Amplifier". There is other fine print, but I don't want to complicate things if @Emile has the system functioning to his satisfaction.

  12. I live in an apartment and sometimes don’t hear someone knocking on the door, especially if they knock softly and I have music playing. The simple solution was to buy a wireless doorbell. It’s in two parts: the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter is a little white plastic box with the doorbell button on it that you attach to your door, or somewhere very close, so that everybody will notice it. It has a little battery in it that lasts for years. The receiver is a larger white plastic box that you plug into any convenient AC socket, near the door or near where you spend most of your time. When the doorbell button is pressed, you hear a two-tone doorbell sound from the receiver/doorbell unit. It’s that simple. I got it from Home Depot years ago, and it’s been working just fine ever since. Some people still knock instead of ringing, but it would be easy to put a little card saying RING near the button.

  13. How's everyone? I am going to say, it has been hot. 106` here, yesterday. Was in and out of the shower and sprinkler all day. Saw something a little different today. The Air Force is practicing. ...a 727/737 tanker [I assume] and an entourage of A-10s. We see a C-130 and 5 or 6 large helicopters more often. That is pretty cool. They put the C-130 at hilltop level. Yes... there is a minimum altitude...the ground

  18. I used a Heresy III on its side between a pair of La Scalas for years, until I replaced it with a Belle Klipsch. In your system, the phantom centre channel should give decent sound, plus you can use some sound from the TV speakers. Just a bit, assuming there’s no lack of synch/time delay between them and your Heresys. Many receivers have a feature that allows you to correct for any delay/echo effect.

  20. I moved the center speaker to the top right shelf in the cabinet, it did make a good difference. Thanks for pointing that out. also reconnected the speaker/receiver switch I have with no noticeable loss in volume. and I put the Heresy’s on the stands I made in the past.

  24. Just looking at the specs for your AVR, which is loaded with function, features, ran into this: Center Spread: Center Spread expands the center channel signal to left and right front speakers to create a wider frontal audio image for the listener. It is optimized and designed for playback of stereo music content when using the Dolby Surround mode. Also called a Phantom center, thanks.

  27. Thank you so much for your first hand experiences and I have not noticed a difference with my Hermes added to my Pontus, either. Like you I needed to give it a try to decide for myself. Now my thinking is to just stay with the Pontus which I find quite enjoyable. good luck in retirement. I am enjoying mine.

  28. It's good... very good. However I preferred the sound of my current dac over the terminator because of the laid back nature of the denafrips. I have no doubt that it would be a nice improvement from where you are currently at.

  30. Nice system with the Schiit Freya + preamp. I switched from an Audio Research LS7 single ended tube preamp to a Schiit Freya + driving a Pass DIY Aleph J Class A amp I built. This is a very musical combination. Since purchasing a Denafrips Pontus II DAC and running balanced connections throughout my system, I rarely spin vinyl anymore. I have only listened to the Pontus II in NOS mode, but plan to try OS mode soon. I really need to take time to listen to gear for an extended time before I decide if I like it or not. Well, I love the Pontus II. It just reproduces digital in a way I never thought was possible. I am now a believer in the R-2R DAC technology, especially in the way that Denafrips has implemented it. The Pontus II is built like a tank. I can appreciate the many comments made on the use of a DDC. I have my eyes on a Denafrips Iris DDC. I will need to research the best I2S cable option. Right now, I use a Jenving Supra USB 2.0 cable between my Raspberry Pi 4 running Volumio 3 and the Pontus II, and I am astounded at what I hear. The Jenving USB 2.0 cable is USB-certified and has the 90 ohm impedance that digital audio guru Gordon Rankin claims is essential to proper digital music transfer via the USB bus. Jenving cables are manufactured in Sweden and are engineered for performance and measure well. Anyway, I appreciate what folks are posting on this forum thread and plan to purchase an Iris soon.

  31. I can't clearly say which mode I prefer but my Pontus is usually run in NOS mode. I really can't hear any differences. Maybe my brain isn't trained to differentiate to hear such subtle differences or know what I am supposed to be hearing or not hearing.

  32. I am following this thread with interest. I have had a Pontus II for about two weeks now and I'm extremely happy with it. Alvin seems to think that since I'm using the balanced output of a Lumin streamer into the Pontus that I might not benefit very much from a DDC. I was considering that my next upgrade would be a Hermes or a Venus II. Still not sure which way I'll go, but I'm content to just live with the Pontus right now. What mode do you Denafrips users prefer? NOS or OS? Shakey

  35. While I cannot comment on the DDC to DC, my use of the i2s cable/input from CD to DAC made a significant improvement to the clarity of sound. Music is now precise (but not cold & analytical). Mike

  36. The Denefrips Dacs are R2R ladder dacs and they are very highly rated and my Pontus has changed the way I listen to music. I’m an analog vinyl person but the Pontus is so close to my analog sound it is a game changer. Takes the Node 2i to a higher level.

  37. How good does the terminator ii DAC sound? The Pontus sounds awesome but I’m always interested in getting the most out of my system and that terminator ii is probably a game changer.

  38. So the Lyngdorf and lure of Room Perfect got the better of me. I've always been a separates guy but I must say this all in one box is pretty impressive. I'm sure part of it is new gear syndrome but right off the bat this thing impresses. Nice build quality, super easy set up, very good detail, separation of instruments and incredible imaging. All that more impressive when you consider I have two 24" monitors sitting between me and the speakers. The integration with Roon is flawless. The easiest I've ever seen. I bet is was less than a minute after power up that I was listening to my library of FLAC files. With all it features its a bit overkill for my office. I think it would really shine in a common space where music and TV were split and you wanted something less than a frat-house look. HT pass through, dual sub outs, HDMI eARC. This is the kind of impact I was looking for from my KEF active experiment. To say I'm happy with the decision would be an understatement. Hopefully it stays that way and is not just another shiny object (look a squirrel 😁 ). I've been focused on sound, not looks. So, sorry for the mess. Eventually I will get the room sorted beyond just the music end of things. BTW its the small black box below the main monitor's lower left side.

  39. Without the advantage(s) of a nearly endless supply of music whether stored or streamed, and ease of access, no one has asked - How is the quality of the music (sound) compared to a high end CD player?

  40. I had a Node 2i before I upgraded to the Lumin. The Bluos software is very good and intuitive. The internal DAC of the Node is pretty decent and would compete with a lot of budget cd players or DACs. But it does sound better when using a high quality outboard DAC. The Lumin is a step up in sound quality as compared to the Node when using the same outboard DAC, but it is about 3 1/2 times the cost. Shakey

  41. In this day and age of quality streaming devices and network attached storage devices there is absolutely no reason to have a computer in the mix (unless you count the NAS). For me it’s Quobuz (sometimes Tidal) to my Lumin U1 mini to my MHDT DAC. I also have flac files on a Synology NAS, so it’s about 50/50 between streaming from the internet and playing local music.
