  1. I was recently on holiday in South Africa and saw this at one of the Klipsch dealers in Port Elizabeth. Thought it looked cool[emoji106]

  3. Message from Area51: Henry, I want to tell you how much I appreciate your efforts. I didn't do anything to deserve the privilege of eventually receiving the Little Sweetie amplifier (and a little electronics education) you're building. I just happened to hop on the forum right after you posted your intention to build a low cost, reliable SET "forum amp" and you were kind enough to exchange communications; granting me this good fortune. And now another stroke of good luck: being able to "watch" Little Sweetie being built. I'm a lucky monkey. Thank you.

  4. I mostly listen between 65-75db avg on my phone meter. If 85 for 8 hrs is actually safe that’s plenty loud to enjoy music. 75 is decently stimulating.

  7. Not too many of theirs played on the Q back then, but that lp made the party circuit. This is a killer combo/compilation for a record. Different times less stress...

  8. John, [Those of you who have heard this stuff way too often, skip it!] I've been ruminating on what makes the not necessarily "golden ears" dislike Klipsch, and other speaker companies that use horns in the mid and high frequencies (or even those that are fully horn loaded, like The Klipsch Jubilee and Klipschorn, old JBLs and Altecs). All of the above, including the 2/3 horn loaded Cornwall IV, sound incredibly like the classical orchestras I experienced and/or played in, as well as the marching band, jazz band, and Rock bands in Golden Gate Park. So what's the problem? Confirmation bias, when, and if, the "golden ears" hear horns. They have been told, time and again, "Horns are bad, honky, sound like singing through cupped hands," etc., so they hear artifacts that may or may not be there. Every concert hall, control room, recording location, microphone placement pattern, sounds different, but there is usually no way of knowing if what one is hearing is the speaker, the room, the listening position, the original room, etc. Some have not heard good horns, including one salesperson selling low dynamics, veiled, "boring" speakers that I encountered in the shadow of the Transamerica pyramid, who was running down horns without ever having heard one (he finally admitted that). Some need to show they can afford speakers costing from $100,000 to $4,000,000, even if they rarely listen to them, being so busy buying and selling the world. They, for whatever reason, like some other design approach better. That's O.K. with me, but they should to leave any preconceived notions at the door, if possible. When I selected Klipschorns, I very closely considered the very different big Bozaks (sweet), and, later, B&W 801 Fs (smooth). They all sounded very, very different, and I liked them all, but the Klipschorns sounded the most like my old orchestras, and were the most fun! John, I know what you mean about ear wax. I had mine removed, and I hear a lot more detail, etc. I recommend it to everyone, but have it done by a professional.

  9. That Toolshed amp looks amazing and I bet it sounds as good as it looks. I bet it brings all the best out of your Forte IVs. I moved from a McIntosh hybrid integrated to the Primaluna and that combo was the hot ticket to my ears. Several months ago I switched out my HSU sub for a REL and it blends perfectly with my Fortes. I can't stop listening! I can't imagine the music sounding any better than it does now - Congrats on your new Toolshed amp/ forte IV combo!!!

  11. I love everything about the Forte IVs but lately have spent a lot of time listening at very low volume levels. They are very dynamic no matter the volume but the way they scale up and down as volume changes is superb. To me it’s critical that low volume level listening retains all the dynamics of louder volume. Of course cranked they ROCK! They blend incredibly well with my REL s812s and the Primaluna EVO 400 is a great match with them. Synergy!

  13. I've read both, and they both keep very quiet about the whole 'patented' procedure. Vinyl on demand? Every album is 'first generation'? I suspect somewhere in the production line, it will be 'digital'. Ouch😱

  18. Another thing just came to me in a vision. lol The timing of the press release??? Amid all the talk about the way some are handling their businesses? Is it real or is it Memorex? Perfect timing for a new and better way to re-invent the industry? Since we hear in the mid-range for the most part is it gonna work? Will we HEAR a difference or is it poppycock? Crazy but is it???

  19. Years ago when I first began to roll equipment with my Cornwalls, a Decware Zen Triode was the first amp I tried. To this day and many amps later, the Zen is still the best overall sound of any, including an older AR. The only issue was a lack of full blast power. Now I have twin MC-30's that I enjoy very much. Maybe one more to try. Benchmark - on a glowing recommendation from a trusted and dear friend.

  20. Books have been written about Glenn Gould's versions of The Goldberg Variations. And this was before the release of The silence of the lambs, the cult movie with Anthony Hopkins in the role of Hannibal Lecter, serial killer who kills and slashes two policemen and cuts off the face of one to stick it on his face in order to escape. (sorry, that was a spoiler...) Gould became notorious, not just for his humming, but also for his refusal to play for an audience, already at a young age. He recorded the Goldberg Variations twice, in 1955 and in 1981. In 1955 he played it much faster (38'26) than in 1981 (51'47). And he played it on a piano, not on a harpsichord, which the work was originally intended for. I like his recordings a lot because they are very dynamic, but for audio engineers, it must have been a nightmare working with Gould. Sometimes his humming is so loud you could call it 'howling' and then of course, it's really close to 'barking'! 😉 The aria of The Goldberg Variations, as used in The Silence of the Lambs, is not on the official soundtrack CD of the movie.

  21. Understood you will find what you're looking for it will just take some time at least you have some help, extra sets of eyes to find what you're looking for. You might want to post up some wanted ads on Craigslist in major cities around your area; Boise, Spokane etc. I've done this before and had good luck with it.

  22. hey everyone, thanks but this is what I am talking about. this is a mismatched pair that is someone's project. this isn't what I am looking for. I am looking for cabinets in good shape with internals that haven't been touched or if have been have been done in an appropriate fashion. sequential numbered. The pair linked has mismatched labels so are not of the same vintage. this is definitely not a consecutive pair. seller says one cabinet is partially refinished but its not clear what has been done. on the other hand, these speakers would be reasonable for me to get to as I could either ship with uship or fly to Seattle and drive them back in a rental. The price is good! but there would be a big project here getting these into my living room. I mean shouldn't this mismatched set be going for like 500 or being sold individually? maybe I am making too much of it and this is why I have been searching for a set of La Scalas for so long, haha. I would rather have a perfect pair of raw birch la scalas for 3k then a project at 1k, is that too much to ask? thanks again for the responses and thank you for providing options! this is definitely helping me clarify and I believe zooming in on a set of speakers for me. Happy Friday!

  23. A maniac to a "horn guy" is a compliment in the highest order! Thank you.

  24. A hum pot does work well for eliminating most of the hum, even with a horn bass enclsure. But, you still have 60Hz modulating your music signal no matter what. A 45 I can see using a hum pot because the filament is 2.5V, but with the 300B, a 5V filament, your hum will be greater.

  29. Big Red is very red. Nice build. I see he likes carbon film resistors. I use them is various places, but metal film/carbon film today are about the same price, so metal film is the way to go. My favorite low wattage metal film is a Dale/Vishay CMF. They are a little more expensive than pedestrian metal film resistors, but they are totally transparent in the circuit. 31. Not Mine. But the subject matter is awesome! Like to post the story that is from Feb of this year but cannot. It was from a news site you have to join, and pay to view. I've got a little access this month. So if you are way up there you might have seen these already. One I had from years ago that I liked was Jedice Master Snoda! These are in a different league, also a nice memory break from the heat. Up In MN I imagine they could get sick of the cold. Around the turn of next year I'll search for him and see what's next. Bravo! Mr. Paul Larcom of Becker, Minnesota. Incredible imaginative and talented job there!

  33. To illustrate the ground scheme, I marked up this pic of a 300B amp I was making. This particular ground scheme is a bus bar type, but a "hybrid" of a star type and straight bus bar type. It worked out well and there is zero noise in the amp.

  34. It may not compare to the posh amps I see here, but I am using a TEAC A-H500i with my Klipsch Heresy IIIs currently, and I am extremely satisfied with the combination. The TEAC is a serious amp, dual-mono circuit, toroidal transformer and solid build. It's pleasant to use, sounds fine and hasn't made me regret the Pass INT-25 I used to own. It costed €220 and caused my lost of interest in expensive audio.

  36. Perhaps this is more suitable for that sleazy Lounge area, but I prefer to hang with the cool kids in 2-Channel and Tech Mods. Back in the day when I was cranking the Zeppelin on the LaScala, I could not help but notice my phone would start ringing soon after "The Ocean" really got going. I would quickly roll back the volume to listen for the second or third ring, but it wasn't there. Well, it took a few listens to finally realize the ringing phone in "The Ocean" is on the recording, it is the phone in the control room ringing twice, I believe mid first lead solo. So after that, rather than be fooled into turning my stereo down, I would anticipate. Second, never really noticed on the original recording, but when Jimmy Page was remastering the Zeppelin in 1993, he mentioned the squeaky bass pedal in "Since I've Been Loving You", he could not get rid of it, and it bothered him still. Well, sure enough, plain as day, Bonham's squeaky bass pedal is well up in the mix and easily apparent in the soft opening, now I can not unhear it. I'm sure there are many others, Zeppelin and otherwise (No, the airplane droning off in "Black Country Woman" does not count, other than Robert Plant croaking "Nah, Leave it in" before the take begins.)

  37. I hope all that are building or planning on building a tube amplifier jumps on board and do much as I am doing detailing their build with pictures. Members seem to enjoy following along and I guarantee even experienced builders will probably learn some tips from the other members that do post and describe their build.
    1 point
  38. To the members following along, in a lot of cases, you can ground the filament circuit center tap or virtual center tap and be done. However, in some cases, the filament circuit can be "biased" by the cathode circuit as shown via C5 or a voltage divider. Elevating the filament circuit can help reduce hum in some amp circuits. Connecting to the cathode circuit was/is very popular.
    1 point
  39. To clarify, when a transformer or transformer section does not have a "center tap", you can make a "virtual ground center tap" by using two low value resistors (100 Ohm/0.5W) as indicated on the Little Sweetie schematic. This virtual ground center tap allows you to terminate the filament circuit to the positive end of C5, which is the cathode of the 6Y6GT. Although the schematic has a hand written note "B Ground". The filament circuit can go to either place, signal ground or positive side of C5. This "virtual ground" concept can only be used on low voltage transformer windings, not high voltage windings.

  40. Hi, it's all in a finish they call champagne; the front panel is thick and the knobs apparently made from solid. Good build, in my experience.

  41. My 45 tube amp is dead quite. I can still hear a touch of hum with my ear directly on the speaker with my 300B but nothing to be concerned about a few feet away. I sure do not want to jump in there and try and eliminate such a tiny amount. Could make it worse fooling around. My 300B amplifier design has a lot of gain and I would rather the gain to be much less but it is what the schematic I built it from calls for. Sound though is fantastic. A SET 300B has a very distinct sound that I like.

  43. John, it's amazing what different perceptions of a loudspeaker brand exist in different markets and countries. Also in Germany there are some "High End" blinded people who think Klipsch is a party loudspeaker, but also quite a few people who appreciate Klipsch for 60 years, who are also classical music listeners. Congratulations on your CW IV and your choice. I would be very interested to know what bores you about the other speakers. Can you describe it a bit or is it "audio-emotional" beyond words?

  44. OK so here's the deal . A week before the show I got busted for 6 or 7 grams of pot . My parents ; my mom , allowed me to go to the show because I already had tickets and they liked my friends I was going with . So when I get home from the show of course the folks are up and the local news was going hard about the pot smoking and booze being handed out by a performer at the show . My mom was not pleased ☠️

  45. Doubtful if many if any go to the expense of making transformers like McIntosh.
    1 point
  46. No one has transformers like McIntosh does. They are considered the best of the best but Mc amplifiers are real pricy desirably so. I like Chinese offerings in tube amplifiers but I would be reluctant to pay the offering price of the Mc clone. Seems to be one would be paying extra of the Mc look. There are other Chinese PP tube amplifiers that have excellent reviews for less money than the price of this one. This is not to say it may sound great but it is not going to be a Mc 275 just because it may look like one.
