That is a "Big Boy!" Nothing like that around here! A group of us had the "pleasure" of turning this place around before it totally fell down. Duckburg is located on the straight shot btwn NYC and Chitown. We're midway so the old trains laid overnight here. This town back in the day had many visitor's all the time. They would lay over on a siding downtown. Notable "Hero's" of the day were the likes of Capone, Dillinger and Eisenhower who laid overnight here on a regular basis. TONS more to that story. Tunnels under the sidewalks were dug to protect the criminals around town with access to local bars and even the big hotel downtown. Had their own "speak easy" under the hotel and a two person elevator up to their suite. Here's ae a couple of then and now pics. All done by about 15 of us with donations from the community. It's done so I guess I should take a few more pics. Soon Nope, not a train freak at all. Since Neil Young is, I always joked about bringing him in for a concert to help with funding it all so we could take a break. As if! Just busy work leaving another mark on the community.

I've told this before... side story, I live out in the boonies, last house on dead end road and I'm in the woods. NOBODY has any reason to be here unless they are expected, lost or......up to no good. House was dark, it was dark outside. I had a Thelonius Monk CD in once (forget which one, which track) Had it at a pleasant volume when suddenly, I heard some faint voices outside. I had seen no lights coming up driveway so the only conclusion was that someone(s) were sneaking around outdoors in the dark. This could be bad. Well..advantage is skewed to me since I'm in the house, in the dark (I usually walk around in the dark) so I know where all the floor obstructions are. I quietly work my way over to the door. My heart is pumping....I'm realizing this could be a fight or flight situation and I have nowhere to fly to..... so get prepared. BUT they may not know that I'm at home so element of surprise might be on my side. (side comment, wife wasn't home either so I was alone) Got to door, hand on light switch so that outside lights would temporarily blind them.... yank door open, turn lights on, jump out to immediatly confront the intruders and all I heard were crickets and an occasional frog. WTH??? Long story short, the voices were recorded faintly on the CD. Must have been someone in the room/across the room talking quietly to each other. I had never heard that before and now my heart was racing ready to bang some heads in or perhaps have mine banged in. Nothing but crickets. I slithered back inside, turned lights out and continued to enjoy the music while my heart slowed down.

In early summer last year, I acquired a pair of 1986 La Scalas. They had suffered a little over the years: a dog had chewed the cabinet corners and mice had made their presence known in the doghouse. However, apart from a coat of polyurethane over the Raw Birch plywood, they were entirely original. After having wanted La Scalas for more than 40 years, I was a bit underwhelmed by how they sounded. Fortunately, this forum provided a wealth of ideas, suggestions, and advice on how to improve my system. Over the course of the past year, I’ve: Disassembled and cleaned everything Replaced the original AL network with a new AA network from Crites Replaced the squawker gaskets Repaired the cabinets Laminated 3/8” plywood to the top, bottom, and sides of the speakers Replaced the K-77 tweeters with DaveA’s SMAHL tweeters and lenses I’ve matched the La Scalas with a pair of THTLP subwoofers that I’m feeding via a MiniDSP 2x4HD. I use a Yamaha R-N803 receiver and a Bluesound Node streamer. Yesterday, I finished veneering (with ribbon Sapele) and refinishing (with Rubio Monocoat "Pure") the La Scalas. Because I wasn't confident that I had the skill to veneer the doghouses I painted them the same black that I used for the squawkers and tweeters. I’m quite pleased with how the speakers turned out. Here is a close-up of one of the refinished speakers and a photo of them in my living room. The speakers --- augmented by the THTLPs --- now sound as good as I had always imagined they would. I'm delighted with them. It's been a journey getting them to this point, but the journey has been entirely enjoyable. The help of members of this form has been indispensable to me. Rather than call out each of the more than 20 people who gave suggestions and advice, I'll just say thank-you to all.

What I did on mine.... Under the stairs, was a water heater. I moved it to inside the garage, next to HVAC system (air handlier) Closet now empty, put a shelf in. I put sheetrock BELOW the shelf to floor so it's only a 1/2 closet. Around the corner, is one of the openings that my LaScala slides through so it actually sits UNDER the rack. Wired things. When it came to the rear wall, THIS is where I went nuts with a plethora of outlets, XLR connectors, RCA connectors, CAT-5 connectors, HDMI.... Now, on the OTHER side of this wall (so now I'm under the stairs looking at the back side of the wires) instead of putting sheetrock up, I put a 3/4" panel of plywood. If I need to access the wires inside the wall from the rear, I simply take plywood down (held on by 4-6 screws, I don't recall) But, this plywood is now a perfect home to mount my DTV splitter, Wireless transmitter and tie down the extra wires I have to it so they are all looking nice. If I didn't know that I'd done this myself, I would never have believed myself. No pictures of the other side of wall with the plywood.

I agree, we should keep to the original intent of building this amp as designed. However, I must disagree about the lack of voltages on the schematic. A schematic with voltage references is a very handy thing when troubleshooting. It is also just good practice. You should know you can't assume anything when building and for new builders, measuring a voltage to ensure everything is working correct can be very helpful and reassuring. Each node with a relevant voltage should be indicated. It does not cost anything other than a few extra moments annotating it.

Many of the power supply and other questions were previously raised by former forum member xxJPMxx in the original thread, and answers were provided. If the amps are constructed as mono units with the specified parts, the only voltage reference really needed is the plate to cathode voltage of the 6Y6. We can safely assume that the other voltages will follow. The reference point for specified electrode voltages in manufacturer tube data is always to the cathode in tubes having one. In the original thread, John Lumley posted his power supply variant which some may find interesting and informative. And, former forum member wdecho posted his FFT measurement of the amp which is interesting as well. I agree with Henry that his build thread should be kept on the non-technical side. His implementation has worked very successfully and anyone emulating his work should expect to obtain similar results. I suggest starting a new thread for improvements to the original design for those more technically inclined. Suggesting changes to the design based on calculations without experiencing the original is analogous to a chef wanting to improve a recipe without tasting the original form. Maynard

Slipped up to the festival last night to catch the show and it was well worth it. Nice to watch a group of guys you've known forever flip the switch and kill about 1500 people in one of the beer gardens. Today's updates I heard about. Some guy walked out of a bar, saw some woman with a leashed dog so walked up and bit the dog, which ran somewhere. Down the street a bit one guy called out three others for a smash down. lol That guy nailed another dude who went after him w/two cops chasing them both down an alley. Yes, the Festival has started. 3 days and 200k ppl. It's a hoot. I'm opened up and have been playing for the hood since noon. Neighbor behind me dropped lunch off and said it sounded great. Said all 3 of them liked the album selection. Hahahaha

Perhaps this is more suitable for that sleazy Lounge area, but I prefer to hang with the cool kids in 2-Channel and Tech Mods. Back in the day when I was cranking the Zeppelin on the LaScala, I could not help but notice my phone would start ringing soon after "The Ocean" really got going. I would quickly roll back the volume to listen for the second or third ring, but it wasn't there. Well, it took a few listens to finally realize the ringing phone in "The Ocean" is on the recording, it is the phone in the control room ringing twice, I believe mid first lead solo. So after that, rather than be fooled into turning my stereo down, I would anticipate. Second, never really noticed on the original recording, but when Jimmy Page was remastering the Zeppelin in 1993, he mentioned the squeaky bass pedal in "Since I've Been Loving You", he could not get rid of it, and it bothered him still. Well, sure enough, plain as day, Bonham's squeaky bass pedal is well up in the mix and easily apparent in the soft opening, now I can not unhear it. I'm sure there are many others, Zeppelin and otherwise (No, the airplane droning off in "Black Country Woman" does not count, other than Robert Plant croaking "Nah, Leave it in" before the take begins.)

The stand mixer.... a stove and cupboard... our kitchen isn't finished. We do have a stove. I hate the damn thing. The burners pulse heat. It is made that way... Like a thermostat.... I like a constant heat. One burner doesn't pulse.... it goes WOT. The part costs more than we paid for the stove or the "new" one.

It rained last night , not much , a fresh land rain over 6 hours. Is not particularly much but has cooled the air. During the day it is only max 77F . It's still late summer but it's getting autumn ....the first trees are losing their leaves, the green is fading and changing colors to natural fall colors. Our annual Sea Side Taint Festival had started yesterday. Many german pop / rock bands are playing there, lot´s of international food bar, many many taints and approx. 1,5 Mio Visitors w/in 2 weeks . Hasn´t happened the last 3 years because of CoVid, so this time our folks are hungry for this event

I have not tried Benchmark amps but I have had all of the DACS and still use the DAC3. On my UJ I am way overpowered with McIntosh 8207. But being multichannel it simplifies the setup tremendously and plays well with the Xilica processor. I have considered going back to individual amps but I run 3 way with subs and that was a juggling act. Too many boxes. I do still have a second amp for the subs. So the new Jubs offer the opportunity for even better simplicity as well as being able to be very picky as to what amps you use. I like! Not to offend anyone here but this has become a very much "budget" forum. REALLY good electronics DO make a difference.

Hi, I have acquired the following Marantz components and need to buy speakers (new or used) in the $1000-$2000 range for a medium sized room. We currently have a pair of RP-160M speakers hooked up to another system and was considering using these with the Marantz components but have heard such great reviews of the Hersey, Forte, and Cornwalls that I would love to try to find a pair of used ones. If I went with a new pair of Klipsch speakers what would you all suggest. Keep in mine of the $1000-$2000 budget and the specs on the old 8B amp Marantz 8B Amp. Large toroidal, full dual mono circuit and 4 transistors per side. Decent phono stage. 50W RMS. If one can get past its 'commercial' looks and pretend it's a boutique amp, a successful buy.. 😉

Have you considered gasket tape? That's one of the things I do when refreshing a pair of speakers is replace all of the old gaskets for a better more air tight seal.

You'll have to remove the woofer and tweeter be sure to mark the positive on the mid before disconnecting those wires or you might have to pull the mid driver to see factory markings. The crossovers are soldered to the input plugs so they'll need to be de-soldered to get them off the input cup.

I read that these subs suck but wow do they sound incredible paired with La Scalas! Bridged, 2 ohm tap on one MC7270

I'd venture even Miley Cyrus would sound good through that system.

Morning guys. I need to try and explain what I am trying to teach here. I am just a kit builder. You put me in a room with those guys yesterday talking about designing and they were to ask me what I thought I would have to say "no English." As a kit builder, which I hope some of you become, you will have to trust that whoever designed the circuit you are trying to put together has already done the paper work and the testing after he built the amplifier before he published his design. In other words if I worked at an electronic place I would be on the floor stuffing boards, soldering or something like that. I would not go near the designing room. These days, with few kits available, you have to put your kit together yourself. I am just one who if you assemble all the parts together and give me some instructions I want to take on the challenge of putting them together and see if I can make them work. Your instruction now is going to have to be the schematic. I am trying to teach you how to read a schematic where you will have instructions. Everything you need is in the schematic to put these parts together. Over the years, I started putting kits together in my 20's, I like to think I have advanced a little in that I now have a signal generator and scope to do some checking on the circuits after building the kit. With a scope you can check the power supply circuit and see what your DC looks like at the plate of the tubes if you choose to. I usually do not do that though trusting that the designer has already done that and thinks the DC is clean enough for his design. About all I do with my scopes, I now have 4 of them, is check the signal to make sure it looks good and there is nothing nasty there to see. That is about all I know how to do with a scope. I just always wanted a scope when I was young but those things were expensive back then the reason I have four of them. Now there are some really decent scopes you can buy rather cheap at todays money. These new digital scopes can do so much, almost make your coffee in the morning. I must say it is nice to have those experience builders looking over my shoulder making sure I am not making mistakes. But trying to understand some of the things they were writing made me tired. I just know a little of the electronic language. I get lost around those guys pretty quick when they start talking the things they were talking about. Good to have really smart guys on the forum though. Try and learn something from them. In other words be smart and use them. You potential kit builders really need a Mouser parts list with numbers where you can just buy all your parts just by typing in the numbers. I am going to try and do that for you this morning since I am up early. Then you can order the other parts needed like RCA input and speaker out things, terminal strips etc from places like Tubedepot.

it's all good. I was busy yesterday. Over at the neighbor's, cutting weeds. Paying for it today. Getting up and down is a bit slow. wife made it home fine. She did go through some water. She was doubting her early out today... until she got a call from a gal that was trying to get to the school shortly after wife got home.. turned into an adventure... a wash party. It pays to keep a few non-perishable munchies in the car. Some extra clothing, too

I hope all that are building or planning on building a tube amplifier jumps on board and do much as I am doing detailing their build with pictures. Members seem to enjoy following along and I guarantee even experienced builders will probably learn some tips from the other members that do post and describe their build.

Another thing just came to me in a vision. lol The timing of the press release??? Amid all the talk about the way some are handling their businesses? Is it real or is it Memorex? Perfect timing for a new and better way to re-invent the industry? Since we hear in the mid-range for the most part is it gonna work? Will we HEAR a difference or is it poppycock? Crazy but is it???

Great article @KROCK! This could be what I heard about at least 20 years ago. Maybe 30, and answers a lot of questions I wondered about. Funny it's rolling out in London but that adds to what I heard. Prior to a Stones show a few started talking business w/Jagger and someone mentioned a 401k for his retirement. He was laffing at the question. He said there were a million songs in his bank account. He also mentioned a vinyl revolution and that vinyl wouldn't be used for records in the future. Everyone laffed but he said what's so funny. It's gonna happen just watch he said. I immediately thought cd's. As someone who buys tons of vinyl I thought the new process was what he was talking about but now I'm REALLY wondering just what he was talking about. Strange, but it's Mick and London.
