  1. In early summer last year, I acquired a pair of 1986 La Scalas. They had suffered a little over the years: a dog had chewed the cabinet corners and mice had made their presence known in the doghouse. However, apart from a coat of polyurethane over the Raw Birch plywood, they were entirely original. After having wanted La Scalas for more than 40 years, I was a bit underwhelmed by how they sounded. Fortunately, this forum provided a wealth of ideas, suggestions, and advice on how to improve my system. Over the course of the past year, I’ve: Disassembled and cleaned everything Replaced the original AL network with a new AA network from Crites Replaced the squawker gaskets Repaired the cabinets Laminated 3/8” plywood to the top, bottom, and sides of the speakers Replaced the K-77 tweeters with DaveA’s SMAHL tweeters and lenses I’ve matched the La Scalas with a pair of THTLP subwoofers that I’m feeding via a MiniDSP 2x4HD. I use a Yamaha R-N803 receiver and a Bluesound Node streamer. Yesterday, I finished veneering (with ribbon Sapele) and refinishing (with Rubio Monocoat "Pure") the La Scalas. Because I wasn't confident that I had the skill to veneer the doghouses I painted them the same black that I used for the squawkers and tweeters. I’m quite pleased with how the speakers turned out. Here is a close-up of one of the refinished speakers and a photo of them in my living room. The speakers --- augmented by the THTLPs --- now sound as good as I had always imagined they would. I'm delighted with them. It's been a journey getting them to this point, but the journey has been entirely enjoyable. The help of members of this form has been indispensable to me. Rather than call out each of the more than 20 people who gave suggestions and advice, I'll just say thank-you to all.

  2. Last day of the 3-day Festival was yesterday and as usual it poured rain from mid-afternoon on. 😂 Guess they'll have to wait another year for the dog and pony show. Have been running the Linn, McIntosh, Heresy combo lately so I decided to give it a lil bump last nite. hahaha Checked my world tour list at Ticketmaster and thought about adding another show this fall. Seems as though Jeff Beck is playing a smaller venue in Cincy, 3.5 hours south Might but doubtful. Just a heads up for anyone interested. The lil bump was on this one naturally with the show coming up in a couple weeks. Hope no one's showing up expecting Layla, Cocaine and the like. Allllll blues allllll night is the game plan. Factor in Jimmy Ray Vaughan and it's gonna kick some rears. Oh that lil McIntosh? Might have pi$$ed off the neighbors but they're getting a booster shot shortly. They'll survive it!

  4. I have two of the smallest-size THTLPs; each measures 18" x 15" x 72". Each has a 12" driver and is driven by a 250W plate amplifier (mounted on the back of the THTLP). I needed a MiniDSP 2x4HD to "dial them in" so that they sounded good with my system. The subwoofers are in diagonal corners of my living room, as per this diagram: Since the subwoofers are prominent in my living room, I veneered them to match my La Scalas. I would class my woodworking skills as "intermediate" and I found them easy and enjoyable to build. This shows the two THTLPs:

  5. If so, the RealMarkDeneen might be able to help. I stress MIGHT. I'm getting pretty fricken' old, and before full blown dementia sets in, i might be able to provide help to those JMA owners who couldn't access me after retirement. To all who got stuck, I apologize. I apologize for not making everything RIGHT. All sorts of mistakes were made, as often happens in life. The only thing I can't do is actual repairs on gear. I'm not even sure if the company will allow me to be here. I'll find out soon, I imagine. If not, best wishes to all my old friends (and the unfriends too), and keep the hobby alive! Cheers, RealMarkDeneen

  9. To continue to encourage new builders to get their feet wet, you don't necessarily need to drill holes in a chassis to get started building a tube amp; you can "breadboard" a tube amp too, as shown below. This allows you to quickly mount components and make/change connections. If wired correctly, you should not have any noise, but with a set-up like this, it is more about getting the circuit up and running.

  16. The speakers sounded good before I changed the caps, maybe a little tizzy and thin if I am looking for something perceived to comment on. They did not sound veiled to me. they also did not sound as good as I remembered my original Chorus sounding years ago. I figured different room, amplifier, older ears etc.. Short answer they needed new caps. They sound full crisp fast and tight and the bass is hitting me in the chest, they sound like I remember them now. Love it.

  20. I annotated the schematic to add the voltages since it's much easier for beginners to read them there than to look up tube datasheet and find the pins for the corresponding electrodes. Hope it helps

  21. Tube gear is a lot easier to repair in my opinion. Modern solid state amps are usually direct coupled and when a transistor goes out, there is a daisy chain reaction and more transistors are damaged due to direct coupling. If a SS amp has a catastrophic failure, I'll replace all the transistors in that particular channel except for the input section but sometimes they get zapped too.

  22. Sheesh. I am old enough to remember when my father bought his first transistor amp. We looked at it like it was something that came out of a ship from Mars, and were amazed that it actually produced sound despite having no tubes.

  35. I think the basic concept is that you look at the spec sheet for each speaker you are running. If you have high-end speakers and a high-end powered sub, you want to set ALL speakers to SMALL (manual crossover), then manually adjust the crossover for each channel pair (Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back) to the lowest possible setting that is ABOVE the low frequency response rating of the speaker on the spec sheet. For a speaker with a 52Hz response, you would set to 60, for 32hz, you would set 40, etc. But you can play with the settings and see what sounds best in your room as well. As long as the manually adjusted crossover frequency is above the low-frequency response level of a given speaker, then you will have no holes or gaps in the frequency range that is being reproduced. My receiver only has 20Hz increments for manual crossover settings, so for me it is: Speaker Channel: Frequency Response: Crossover Setting FRONT L-R RP-8060FA 32Hz-25kHz +/- 3dB 40Hz CENTER RP-504C 50Hz-25kHz +/- 3dB 60Hz SURROUND L-F RP-600M 44Hz-25kHz +/- 3dB 60Hz SURROUND-BACK L-R RP-502S 58Hz-25kHz +/- 3dB 60Hz I think this is the way; but, I am not the most knowledgeable person here, so others may refine or correct this information. I still need to understand how the Subwoofer crossover setting plays into this, as I notice a crossover setting for it, both in the receiver speaker setup, and on the back of the sub as well.

  36. Okay I went ahead splurged picked up a pair 500-SA mounted them up high on the front wall. Seems to work darn nice... My sub seems to now be my weak point. My 2002 era KSW-15 is just to slow blubbery to mate well with the Belles and the rest of my speakers.. I was digging around Amazon and eBay the Reference R-12SW can be had cheap! The review I've read all seem great many call it tight, articulate and distortion free. At $200 each affording a pair is pretty darn easy! Any thoughts?

  37. Henry's comment about getting "bit" reminded me of a story that has absolutely nothing to do with this thread, but I think some of you will relate. I have a Buggera tube guitar amplifier that came through my house fire relatively unscathed. Somewhere along the line, though, it must have gotten banged around a little because when I fired it up, there was a pop and it died. New fuse...pop. Took it to a local store who farms the repair work out to the only guy in town who repairs tube amps. A couple of days later, I get a call that the amp is ready. When I picked it up, the guy at the music store said the repairman had told him the Buggeras are great little amps, but they are built on a PCB and he had received a rather potent shock as soon as he started working on it. I guess that might be a case for point-to-point wiring.

  38. I need to check but the varnish is likely shot. I will try to use it with a disposable on a scrap of wood. I just checked and my 'good brush' that I use for polyurethane is an old Wooster pro that I bought years ago. I don't see it anymore, but which one do I need for poly as I'd like to have a second and third to put on additional coats while the first one is drying. The poly seems to flow well. Is this what I need, a very soft one for a smooth finish? I'd like to get a few more brushes and at this price it is a no brainer. https://www.amazon.com/Wooster-Brush-5221-2-1-Silver-Paintbrush/dp/B000W7CNBU/ref=psdc_282486_t1_B000IKQSI0 Is this one worth twice the price? Still affordable. https://www.amazon.com/Wooster-Brush-4170-2-1-Lindbeck-Paintbrush/dp/B000IKPSE0?ref_=ast_sto_dp# OK, I keep editing this and have to go to bed but I just read the Yachsman is for oil, marine or urethane. Only $10 each. Should I just buy a bunch of these? https://www.amazon.com/Wooster-Brush-Z1121-2-Yachtsman-2-1/dp/B002YC6FMY#

Gould can be a complete nutcase: Here he discusses the effect that music can have on animals: (no one above asked the question why *that* dog started barking in the first place. most likely, it was reacting to the music it was hearing, as is demonstrated in the video below, thank you Glenn Gould!) https://youtu.be/57kR6RsV2iA But then he can be a genius as well: https://youtu.be/57kR6RsV2iA

  43. Finished the X-wing fighter First hour was fun, then it became a pain in the a$$ as there are 4 wings that are almost identical - but the instructions do just one by one by one by one. Too much repetition for me (at least I did the last 2 wings simultaneously). Haha; could never do the Titanic with TWENTY TIMES the pieces Actually, think Lego's were more fun 50 years ago when one had to use their imagination to come up with designs
