  2. Hit the pile and stuck out my thumb. Pulled this one out. Man does she have some pipes! Double gatefold and it's loaded! Live from Austin TX is the fourth album and the first live album by American blues artist Susan Tedeschi, released in 2004.[1]

  4. There's one thing I like a lot about this thread: I don't have to defend myself when I buy 'new old' vinyl records. At the end of the summer holidays, I needed a 'fix' of well-recorded albums for the stormy autumn that's coming, so this is what I bought: Mark Knopfler, Privateering (very bluesy) Toto, Their Ultimate Collection Daft Punk, Ramdom Access Memories

  5. You guys salvaged the thread. Great stuff. The only time I was ever inside of an amp, I got tossed halfway across the room by a bias resistor. At least that's what I think it was. @NOSValves would know for sure, since he was the one that was trying to kill me.

  7. Roadsongs is the second live album by The Derek Trucks Band, released in 2010. The album features many songs off the band's most recent album, Already Free. The album was recorded over two nights in April 2009 at Chicago's Park West. For the album, The Derek Trucks Band was joined by a horn section consisting of Paul Garrett (Trumpet), Mace Hibbard (Saxophone), and Kevin Hyde (Trombone). This is #606 of 1500. Shhhhh, mummm's the word. Don't break my bubble w/that "How do ya know what it is and if it's analog to analog of if memorex is involved." No lava lamp yet either but it is a VERY groovy kick-butt double gatefold!

  9. Christopher Cross? Cross released his self-titled debut album, Christopher Cross, on Dec. 27, 1979.[10] Billboard Hot 100 top 20 hits from this album included "Ride Like the Wind" (featuring backing vocals by Michael McDonald), "Sailing", "Never Be the Same", and "Say You'll Be Mine" (featuring backing vocals by Nicolette Larson). "Ride Like the Wind" hit number two on the U.S. Hot 100, while "Sailing" topped the chart for one week.[2] "Never Be The Same" went number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. Cross, the album and the song "Sailing" were nominated for six Grammy Awards in 1981, and won five.[11] Cross was the first artist in Grammy history to win all four general field awards in a single ceremony, bringing home Record of the Year ("Sailing"), Album of the Year (Christopher Cross), Song of the Year ("Sailing"), and Best New Artist at the 23rd Annual Grammy Awards.[a] This feat was not replicated for 39 years, until Billie Eilish won all four awards at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards in 2020.[12][13] In addition, "Sailing" won for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). Christopher Cross has been certified platinum five times in the U.S., selling over 5 million copies.[14] Later in 1981, Cross released "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)", co-written by Burt Bacharach, which was the main theme for the 1981 film Arthur. The song won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1981,[15] and was nominated for, but did not win three Grammys.[16][b] In the U.S., it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Hot Adult Contemporary charts in October 1981, remaining at the top of the Hot 100 for three weeks; it also was a top-ten hit in several other countries. The song became the second and last American number-one hit by Christopher Cross

  11. If anyone wants the PDF of the Mullard "Circuits for Audio Amplifiers" here it is. It is a trove of DIY building knowledge. This book was geared toward Mullard getting people attracted to their tubes and encouraged DIY. https://archive.org/details/19400164MullardCircuitsForAudioAmplifiers

  12. I've been listening to these three albums, and all three of them really good, of course, but Daft Punk's RAM really sounds fantastic. It's remarkable, because these guys use very modern (digital) technology, I guess... I was not familiar with the song below, but it caught my attention because of its full sound (bass!) and the stereo-image.

  15. If we work together and do design a SET EL84 amplifier I will give considerable thought to building it. But it is not going to be like the last build where cost was a big consideration. I want to get a pair of those NOS RCA EL84 tubes at $120 apiece and build a pretty wood case much like this one. That and stick the Hammond OPT's underneath where they cannot be seen. They sound really good but not the best looking OPT's as far as appearance. They are built and sold to be hid. I would want to use Nichicon 105C caps and Dale resistors. In other words building like I would for myself using what little knowledge I have learned the last 10 years building tube amplifiers. I would like to sell it after building the reason being there is no way I need another tube amplifier. Last count of tube and SS amplifiers I have now was like 22 or 24. It will not be a labor rate of $10 an hour either but more in line for what it's worth. In other words a premium hand built amplifier. If there are no buyers that will be fine. It is being hard for me to sell this Sweetie after I have finished it. Like one of your kids leaving for college. Never done it before, selling an amp I have built. But the plan is to pack it up and send it on it's way first of next week.

  16. I just finished collecting parts to build an ST-35 clone. Edcor transformers, PC board, EL84, 12AX7, 12AU7 tubes, parts from Mouser and Digikey. I'm pushing $1K without a chassis yet. So much for budget build! The days of cobbling stuff together like my grandpa did, are over!

  20. But the price is for a PAIR, after all. In case you need a 1.6 Kilowatt amp to drive your _______________________ brand INEFFICIENT speakers! Keep in mind it's only 32 dbWatts and perfect for those 82 db/watt loudspeakers you overpay for also when you want to reach 114 db Peaks with HIGH Intermodulation distortion! https://www.paragonsns.com/products/dan-dagostino-relentless-epic-1600-mono

  24. Luxury goods pricing has to follow high-end incomes to retain their status as luxury goods. High end incomes are WAY, WAAAAAAY UP over the past few years so a $349K amp seems very affordable considering swining a baseball bat for 3-1/2 hours a day out in the sunshine can get you $40M annually. And, the bigger fish in finance arre knocking down $200M. He has a good strategy - sell 10 amps and retire.

  25. Currently I am privileged to oversee an embarrassment of riches including much of the Heritage line starting with HIP Heresies (sp?), old Fortes, Cornwall IIIs and my most recent and prized acquisition: a pair of Belles. All acquired prior to retirement and divorce so some may have to go in order to finance my audio habit (and pay the rent). Primary preamp is a Schiit Freya +.

  27. I agree to a point Henry, but when I listen to my ported Heresy's, I need a bit more power and one pair does not have a sub in my particular listening area and more power is needed to get some bottom end that I like.

  30. Good memory. Nelson was the first that I recall using that name. In fact, here's the issue that I have about it:
    2 points
  31. As a matter of history, if my memory serves me correctly, back when the original Zen amp came out, I believe it was Nelson Pass who coined the term unofficially. Around exactly the same time, Deckert used the name and I remember Nelson mentioning in a forum post how someone "used" that name too and he was a bit upset about it, but let it go.

  33. I would have to disagree with him about that. Crites has hundreds of measurements on the old cans and the blue epoxy types, and ESR measurements are all over the map, and many measure horrible. If you can find another polyester type that is of the same value and within tolerance, I can't imagine that not being okay. It's AC. Something doesn't have to be in the signal path to have an effect. Or think of it this way, if it has no effect on the sound, why is the part in there in the first place. As for the substitution of an electrolytic in place of a polyester at the shunt position in the low pass, my guess would be that ESR is close to a polyester at the frequencies the part is intended to work. I know you haven't. I was speaking in general terms. The statement actually reflects more on myself and past behavior.

  34. a few people on here have said film caps dont go bad or at least not in the 25-30 year time frames most go by or even wont go bad within our lifetime... captainbeefheart is the most recent one, he was very adamant that film caps rarely if ever go bad or fall out of spec on a recent thread about changing caps. didnt say they were exactly the same, but they are supposed to be the same type/specs as original, which is why they are "authorized" & any other type or brand of cap will make the speakers no longer be klipsch speakers... right, there is 1 electrolytic in the signal path of chorus, forgot about that. but no other models of this era use them in the signal path, or at least not fortes/2, quartet, or any of the KG's. changing the woofer shunt lytic has been said to affect the sound & some use film caps there because they said they could hear a difference. others like bob crites have said they wont affect the sound being they arent in the signal path for most other speakers. that is what i meant about changing the woofer electrolytic cap. not arguing that caps can sound different, yourself & many others for years have said caps sound different & seeing some of the work youve done & the caps you use, im sure there are "better" quality/sounding caps than original. nothing wrong with using original type/jem caps to keep things original, i have never beat anyone up over using jem or keeping original caps, i have even been open to using originals/jem if some of my questions would have been answered about PP vs PE caps or using other brands of PE caps that should have the same or very close ESR as originals so as to not change the voltage curve... but i gave up on getting any answers about that. glad the OP is happy with his new caps.

  36. Morning guys. This Sweetie project is mostly finished now and I hate to see this thread drift into the sunset. Everyone has behaved and got along and I enjoyed having everyone that had something to say here. Perhaps you guys might want to change the title to "Little Sweetie Forum Amp Project and Beginners Builds" and keep it going. A moderator would have to change the title I believe. I guess the main thing I want to point out is if an uneducated redneck old man from Alabama can put one of these things together maybe you can too. It will take someone that does not mind working with your hands and average intelligence but most here have those qualities or they would not be lurking or participating in the discussion. George has found a cheaper OPT to use which from what I see would be perfectly fine for this build. Save $40 to $50 on the parts bill. Yesterday I started talking about what the hobby of electronics really is. The study of electron flow. The electronic word for that is current and the way it is measured is in amperes or amps. My personal Sweetie is running .045 amps or 45 milliamps. The abbreviation of 45ma. Those OPT's George found look good for 50ma and they weigh pretty much the same as the 10 watt Edcor's so popular on diy sites and are as large so they look good to me. Just right for a Sweetie build in my book. I do not get hung up on the sound of a part in an amplifier. There are there to do a job and if they can do the job good enough it should work fine. The output tube is where you want your money to go when building an amplifier. That is where the rubber meets the road. Having built all the tube amps I want I do not care to build another tube amp except starting out with one of those old tubes of yesterday. Most of us are not of the age when tubes ruled the electronic world. Tubes did so for 4 or more decades with the big companies making those tubes and they got it right. Especially audio tubes. The big name companies. The new makers of tubes these days are relatively small companies trying to learn how the old guys did it. For the popular hyped up Decware Zen being so in demand in my opinion to make it sound as good or better than this Sweetie one must get some of those old NOS EL84 tubes and take it to another level. That is going to raise the cost to around $1400. In my rough figures one can build this Sweetie with George's OPT's in the neighborhood of $350 in parts. Maybe a little more since I did have screws, nuts, wire, etc already in stock. There is nothing special in the circuit of the Zen. Like the old tubes the old designers got it right too. Not much has changed in tube design. There are now SS devices that can do the job tubes used to do. Like the power supply in this build. Maynard decided to upgrade the power supply to a newer and cheaper part the SS rectifier instead of a tube doing that job. It does just as good a job if not better. Gets the job done. If I build another amplifier it would have to be built around an old output tube. Your amp is never going to sound any better than the output tube you decide to work with. I found an old toroidal transformer I used perhaps 8 or 10 years with secondary voltages of dual 325V and dual 6.3V for the filaments in my box of transformers. Looks good for a EL34 family of tube build. Also wound up with some Hammond 125dse OPT's due to an error on my part ordering OPT's for this build so I have the expensive parts of a tube amp build already. The iron. Do not need another EL34 family of tube amp though. Already have two, George Anderson's SSE EL34 amp and an KT88 one. Maybe another Sweetie with premium parts, not that it will sound that much different than the one we have already built. Just because perhaps. This project was aimed at low cost with good parts type of project. I wanted to see how cheap I could build a small amplifier and still use good parts. This is what I chose and I think it sounds really good.

  39. OK, so upon hearing this for the first time, wondered why it sounded so familiar: Apparently a couple of members of the Turtles were among Zappa's band at the time. And although we have jumped way far ahead to the climax of this album, live performance, it would behoove all to become familiar with this entire album, especially for the legendary Mud Shark episode very well retold here.

  42. Did some tiding up and some checking with scope. Sine wave looks good at 50hz, 1Khz, 10Khz and 20kz. Here are some pictures of the underside after doing some tiding up. Mine will never look as good as say Maynard or Mike but I am proud of it. The other picture is the coin Area51 picked out. We decided to glue it over the hole with the date showing. Who knows years from now someone might see it in a thrift store and will think it was built in Mexico in 1953. 🙂

  44. Picked this up at auction this spring, gone over and another check off on my bucket list. Back in the day I wanted one of these soooo bad but $3k was crazy. Made from 1978-85 I think but it pairs so well w/my old Thorens TD-165 and my 1981 Heresy. Has that sweet McIntosh voice and sounds fantastic. Nice to just push that button and go back to a SS system in the morning over coffee. Things get serious, I just step on the gas and the LS if I want to spin. Just something off my bucket list I felt like doing. Simple.
