  3. Why do my capacitor kits cost more than other brands? I am sure you are aware of the current inflation, manufacturing and transportation costs. I'm not like the huge electronics warehouses that buy tens of thousands of electronic parts very inexpensively, then retails them to industry and individual consumers. I am a small business. I have the capacitors I sell manufactured to Klipsch specifications in small quantities. I make up kits for approximately 24 different Klipsch crossover networks. When you buy a kit from me, you are getting the correct capacitors made to Klipsch specifications. These capacitors maintain the intended design of the original networks. Your speaker will perform and sound as designed by Klipsch. I don't understand what all the fuss is about regarding the service I provide. If you don't feel that my kits are worth the price or don't believe what Roy has stated concerning capacitors, then you obviously don't get it. The whole purpose of this service is to keep the vintage Klipsch speakers operating as PWK intended. I think my service does just that and at a very affordable price.

  4. This is a great thread. I've lost over 80lbs and went down four pant sizes in the last year and a half. First I cut out junk/fast food. Then I reduced carbs.....which lead to keto.....which lead to intermittent fasting.....which lead to OMAD.....which lead to working out more.....which lead to eating more healthy etc. etc. I had brain fog to the max. Gone. Acid reflux/Gerd. Gone. Memory, concentration has gotten better. I mean...wait.... What was I talking about again?😋

  9. Hi Roy, I'm too tired to wade back through the posts. There was something about why some hadn't used Klipsch branded capacitors and I said that being able to get these parts was a relatively recent thing. Randy said it's been two years, but what is two years compared to the almost 20 years some of us have been here, doing what we do because people had nowhere else to turn. A lot of work was done before those capacitors became available. That was all I meant. As for mods, it's just the truth that some people like to modify their stuff, and they aren't much worried about what Klipsch thinks when they do it. When you asked me to stop calling my builds "upgrades" and to call them "mods", I did what you asked. You have said many times you don't care about the mods, just don't call them upgrades or Klipsch spec. I have respected that, so I don't understand why you're mad. I do think a mod or different network is required when someone starts yanking out tweeters, horns, etc. There is no problem with me. I feel like I've been a voice of reason in this thread.

  11. I concur. My 1999 C5 Corvette has mods and they are not factory approved, but it runs like a bat out of hell and is way more fun to drive than when I first bought it used. A lot of people like a "base product" but want to take it to the next level. In some cases, there is not another level.

  13. Funny story. My wife and I research things like crazy to try to learn what is going on. My sister in law put her husband on a 'ketosis diet' I thought that is was funny because there is no way that he is giving up refined carbs and that will take him right out. I am picturing him eating huge plates of bacon and then going out for cake. We went to visit and it was completely different than what I thought. She was buying products that said 'keyto' on the label and feeding it to him. One was like peanut butter but chocolate flavor, all of it basically candy. My wife explained this to her sister and she was not happy. Funny what people think is healthy.

  15. Well, I've had an awful lot of blood sugar tests and it never was a problem. I don't have these symptoms: extreme thirst or hunger feeling hungry even after a meal increased or frequent urination tingling sensations in hands or feet feeling more tired than usual frequent infections evidence of high blood sugar levels in blood work

  18. My E networks in my heresy are so simple with two 2uF caps, they came with the Tecate caps from JEM when I bought them last year. I think it's probably just faster to test the network as a whole circuit and plot the output vs input with the JEM caps since we know these are sanctioned to be the "Klipsch sound". Then I can swap various 2uF caps in and plot the filter outputs and compare the differences. This should show any and all differences between types to see if the specified caps do have a unique transfer function that is desired. It will probably be best to start an entire new thread for the sake of keeping the conversation kept to capacitor replacements for crossover networks. I will already state that anything other than the JEM caps will be construed as a "modification" so that's how any cap other than the Tecate types should be referred to. Even if we achieve the same transfer function as them, they will still be considered a "modification" so please keep this in mind to respect Klipsch and JEM. The only sanctioned replacement parts come through JEM but we can at least be scientific about "modifying" the networks and showing the results from said modifications. There are others besides myself that are interested in other replacement capacitors besides the ones from JEM, so a database of how the plots may change may help determine which direction some people will go. If there is an audible difference then it should be measurable in one form or another. I'm also interested in possibly showing the linearity differences between different capacitors. Those will be different measurements on the capacitors alone outside of network. It may be prudent to also measure distortion at various output powers into a load through the networks and not just view amplitude vs frequency. Distortion results may clue us into some of the sonic differences.

  22. Again I want to thank all the guys that contributed to this thread. I am seriously considering building another Sweetie but this time a pretty one and mono in a single chassis. What can I say, I enjoyed building another tube amplifier. This one will use better name parts and different better looking PS transformers. The OPT's will be mounted underneath and not be seen. This is just fun for me so I plan to document the build much as I did with the previous Sweetie. This one is going to be inline with the price of the Decware Zen but better looking and sounding in my humble opinion. That is the way a standard Zen is shipped with those Russian made for something else tubes. Looking something like this build of mine.

  25. In the old Mullard publication, Tubes Circuits for Audio Amplifiers, they briefly discuss shared cathode resistors... they claim at low power, it is OK, but at higher power levels, better performance is acheived by using separate resistors/caps for each channel. This was noted on a push-pull design, not single-ended.

  28. Here's the raw measurement of the Celestion Axi2050 in the K-402 horn at 85 cm distance. 1/24 Oct. smoothing. And here's a measurement at 1m distance of AXi2050 (green) vs Radian 950BePB (red). 1/24 Oct. smoothing. As can be seen, the Celestion AXi2050 needs more boost in the highs. Or simply lower the frequencies below to get a flat response before adding the desired shelving. It's a large driver with a 5" voice-coil. While the AXi2050 does give more level in the lows, it drops quite significantly below 250 Hz in the K-402 horn. Meaning a crossover of 4th order much below 500 Hz here might not be ideal, but this is up for discussion and is best to test by listening. The Radian 950BePB is best to crossover around 600 Hz if it's a 4th order. A steeper crossover might enable a little lower crossover for both. Depending on the distortion and directivity.

  32. I am quite happy with my Crown XLI800 solid state doo-dah and never felt compelled to have to seek new parts for it to improve it all. I have heard some great sounding tube using setups but quite frankly nothing that beats my simple S-MWM's + Xilica and the Crowns. Watching tube users is fascinating to me and I never would do it. Seems like a rabbit hole you jump into and are then never satisfied. Like a boat I think which is a hole in the water you throw money into.

  33. So, here is some more info on the behavior of the amp: last time I fiddled with it (and spent quite a bit of time getting DeOxit into the controls) - after that, it was still cutting out sporadically and I started looking for other possible causes. That's been probably 10 months ago or more and today, I repeated pretty much the same routine (DeOxit) and really worked all of the controls on the front after spraying with DeOxit.....I think I did a less than effective job the first time.......after doing that today, I wired in some speakers and it's no longer cutting out sporadically - but it won't play both channels in Stereo mode or Reverse Mode. In the Pic I've attached, I've red boxed a knob that these L-11's have that has 3 settings: MONO, STEREO AND REV. Both channels will now *only* play when in MONO mode. When I switch to Stereo, Right channel only, Switch it to Rev. and Left channel only. This is totally new behavior since I last did troubleshooting on it. So, if the relays weren't working as designed or failing to react properly part of the time, I think I'd be hearing it cut out still - and for some reason, that symptom is gone. Or, Is it possible that one of the Relays is causing it to not play Stereo?

  34. Fwiw, I've had the RC-3 and currently own the KLF-C7 and RC-7. I don't wish to belabor the point but if it's sitting on the floor there's your culprit. If you've followed my advice above and it didn't help then you have a faulty RC-7, imo. Good luck with your troubleshooting and hope you get what you want (although you said "Well it sounds just fine playing actual movies/media").

  36. to most people, brighter & more so clearer is an improvement. but too bright is not good. ive said it before & will say it again, i have no dog in this fight, im open to learning new things & would love to have these cap questions answered in terms that the average hobbyist can understand. i post these comments/questions on threads that have usually ran their course but the subject comes up, might be best to start a new thread so anyone willing or capable can address them? i would also be curious to hear jem caps compared to PP caps, i guess the only option thus far is to buy jem (or another PE cap) & compare them for myself...

  37. I’ve got a pair of 1974 La Scalas, plus a pair of 2007 La Scala IIs, which are very similar to the AL5s, apart from the tweeters and crossovers. The La Scala IIs sound noticeably better than the original La Scalas, and from all reports, the AL5s sound better than the LS2s. The Klipsch engineers aren’t just sitting around. The speakers are being steadily improved, so the newest ones are the best sounding. However, if you can hear the AL5s before you buy, you’ll be able to shop confidently, always a good thing. It might be a good idea to expand your search radius. If you have to drive a few hours to find a pair of new La Scala AL5s to audition, it would be worth it, if only for your piece of mind before plunking down an admittedly tall pile of cash. Why do they cost so much? When you look at them, they are nice, but that nice? Well, the cost doesn’t come from just what you see, but from the engineering that made them possible. Also, the new tweeters are saiid to be quite an upgrade. They’re made by Celestion to Klipsch specs, and are a big improvement over the earlier models. Another factor is the reason that model line is called the Heritage Series. Two reasons, actually. First, the speakers in that line were designed and engineered by Paul Klipsch himself, so they have the benefit of his genius in them. The second reason they carry the name Heritage is that they have a very long life. Unlike the foam-surrounded woofers used in most speakers today, the AL5s still use paper cones with doped-paper surrounds, which means that they last indefinitely. My La Scalas were 32 years old when I bought them, and they tested just fine, with smooth, if limited, bass response. Now they’re 48 years old, and they still sound great. These can be your end-game speakers, the ones you enjoy now and for the rest of your life, and then put in your will, so they’ll continue to be enjoyed after you’re gone. They, and you, will not be forgotten. I did mention the limited bass response. How can a 15-inch woofer not have amazing bass? Well, it does, but it doesn’t go as deep as you might expect. This is because these are horn-loaded speakers, which makes possible their ultra efficiency and ability to resolve fine details in music. However, physics requires really big horns to produce deep bass. The La Scala AL5s, the La Scala IIs, all the way back to the original La Scalas, are “portable size”. Seriously. Would you want them to be any bigger? I wouldn’t. Accordingly, the best way to extend their bass response all the way down into the basement is simply to add a subwoofer or two. The very deep bass response may or may not be a factor for you, depending on the music you usually listen to, and your personal listening preferences. Many owners are totally pleased with them as they are. Once you get your speakers home and set up, listen to them for a month or two (it may take you that long to go through your whole music collection, to hear how your songs should sound), and then you’ll know whether or not a subwoofer would enhance your listening experience. Good luck on your quest for great sound, Tony, and welcome to the Forum!

  38. Thanks for the interesting video and pdf. I reviewed this video again. I've done my own evaluation and I can agree on some things, others are in ? For starters, flat response or output in audio never really works for me . It's a good target but don't ever sound great to my ears. There can be many things Klipsch considers that I don't know, or maybe this guy also does not know. He sounds pretty knowledgeable but thats tech and not real listening. We can agree that Klipsch is too tight on quality of components. An additional $100 or so on better quality components in a $4k set could make a notable improvement I think. The almost $1k upgrade price and you install is gettin pretty crazy, imo. My solution was $850 delivered and gives me the best of both music and HT. That JBL horn ain't no joke, it's a deal maker, very balanced. I'm not trying to knock my own 7's too much, I'm just not a fanboy type. I call it like I hear it, regardless. The strong point for 7's is in a bigger room, with db's getting up the 7's will impress with shear slam. When cranked up they bring something special to the party. For HT I don't think any mod is needed unless you are strictly concert or a low volume listener. Last, when run through my Anthem w/room correction I barely noticed any shortcomings.

  39. I use macros for my diet. I get 1-1.2 grams of protein per lb. of body weight. This equates to roughly 29% protein 46% carbs 26% fat I lift weights five days a week, so carbs are an essential part of the fuel for lifting. And 25-35% of any active person's diet should consist of healthy (as much as practical) fats. This works for me, but I understand it may not work for everyone. I strive for 2400 calories a day to maintain my body weight.

  40. Nice looking speakers and kind of rare in that cabinet style if they work properly and are in nice condition I think Randy is probably pretty close on value at $1k. If you want to sell these here start a thread in the garage sale section and post some more pictures along with your location thanks.

  44. personally I'd not use Klipsch, in today's marketplace a powered loudspeaker like a QSC K12 offers so much more. Like modern subwoofers, mating the electronics with the speaker allows the designer to integrate active electronics like biamp crossovers and parametric eq inside the speaker, away from the musician end user. What the musician sees is a compact, easy to set up speaker that sounds like the instrument is intended. These speakers are worlds ahead of the first in the industry the Mackie. Lots of PA professionals use them as speakers on sticks, or as stage monitors. Plug in a XLR, 1/4 or two, they have built in mixing capabilities of two sources as well as some basic tone controls. Don't even need a mixer. Just one box will do the job. Looks clean on stage too.

  45. My take - if it's 'musical' then that indicates that it's properly tuned and reasonably flat frequency response, ie not a one-note wonder. If it can do that, it can accurately reproduce whatever LFE sound effects a movie director/sound mixer intended for a soundtrack. Or if you're like 80% of the guys who have demoed their systems for me, you're more about 'blowing stuff up' noises and louder and lower is better. I care less for the latter approach. M My test track is Starship Trooper by Yes, if a sub can reproduce the notes of Chris Squire's Moog Taurus bass pedals, that's the sub I want in my room for music or movies. I run the Klipsch THX sub system in a 17x25x8 room, that's 3400 ft3, about perfect for THX spec. Room is truly those dimensions as there are only two small doorways leading to hallways, not a sealed space true, but pretty 'normal' space for good listening. THe pine walls help considerably.
