  2. And here are some pictures of the finished amplifier. Sounds great, good solid, quick bass. Possible has to do with the larger Hammond OPT's used in this build. Comparing the differences between Edcor or Hammond OPT's is just a mute point. Both build good transformers. Hammond just has been the standard for many years and I can see why now. No wait for them to be built as Edcor's are as well. I just finished wrapping it up this morning so no extended listening has been done yet. Neither have I compared it to my Sweetie I have had for years. Right now I am just enjoying listening to my new tube SET amplifier.

  3. While the website was down I finished the Premium Sweetie build. Here are some pictures of my work. Maynard thinks I used too much solder and he is probably right for a point to point build of a tube amplifier but for the PCB board builds and repairs I do it is what the solder joint is supposed to look like. Trust me I always flow my solder and look for a little whiff of smoke telling me the flux has burned off. Maynard was taught the 3 second rule of soldering. Finish the solder joint then hold an additional 3 seconds. Excellent advice. If you watch some of the professional repairers of SS gear it will shock you how much heat and for how long they hold the iron to the parts they are soldering together. That and the amount of solder added. With a tube build such as this there is a mechanical attachment of all the connections whereas in a board build the only thing holding the part in place is the amount of solder one uses. Many problems can be solved in those old 70's receivers by reflowing the solder joints and adding more solder. Especially pay attention to those big parts on the board that get warm or hot. The steady expansion and contraction of the component leads will crack the solder and will prevent a good connection. Fixed by re-soldering the connection.

  21. @SubwayI laffed back there at that Kenny Wayne video because I've got a funny for ya. Long time ago a friend told me he was in Cbus for a small show and wanted the psycho b**** from H3ll and I to hook him up w/tickets and go along. Some German festival so I said Ok since he was buyin beer, driving and feeding us As long as he was happy right? We get there and were sittin right of him waiting since he wasn't there yet. I asked if there was anyone there from the front band. Dude says yea he's getting ready and will be out in a bit. Gettin darker and I see the front band walkin at me. So we're drinkin and laffin and I looked up and there was Buddy Guy standin there. Talk about a WTF moment? Buddy guy playing in front of this kid who "they" said was gonna be the next Hendrix??? No way! Buddy's done and Jimi's reincarnation is here and coming out. Then when Buddy toweled off he brought a chair out and sat about 2 feet away watchin "Jimi" take over. I'm sittin there for 20 minutes trying to figure out how this kid was "Jimi" I'm bored and gave Buddy the side eye just as he's givin' me the side eye. We turned heads, looked at each other and bust out laffin. We finished the evening side eyein' each other and grinnin. Gotta take my hat off to him today. Only one Jimmy young man and don't you ferget it! Hour ride home and naturally they wanted to know what we were laffin about. Oh nuttin . The thing that got me was Buddy WAS the front band by contract. Lil food for thought right there. Who's behind who and why? If I told ya I'd have to kill ya kinda stuff! 😂

  29. Your method is equally effective since the object is solely to prevent the insulation from being cut. An issue often encountered in 75-80+ year old radios is xfmr leads pulled across ungrommeted holes. As the leads dried out with age, the insulation split. Even some vintage audio amps have had a similar issue. Maynard

Tons of stuff going on around me lately so there hasn't been much time to post let alone spin. Maybe I posted this one. Ugh! lol Clean and simple set up, which is always nice to be able to do.

  46. I forgot to add that included in the miss fee were the RCA input jacks, IEC connector, fuse holder, switch and speaker out jacks. All I had in stock and was not about to go searching for what all that cost again. Just added miss $35 to the low cost build. I tried to be honest as I could on that last build. The selling price for the amp was $100 over the parts which was $469 then after some back and forth with Area51 he decided he liked the idea of a cherry wood stand for the amp to sit in. I told him I would build one for $100 for him raising the cost to $569. The stand did raise the look a lot. That project came about with the talk on this forum of the cost of building a good low cost amplifier and I wanted to see what I could build one for using good parts and not the lowest cost parts that could be found. I have given some thought about the Premium build and right now my thoughts are it is not going to be for sale after I finish building it. At least for awhile, months, years down the road. I have just got too attached to that amplifier and it is the first mono build for me along with using some of the best parts, within reason, I have ever used to build an amp. The price of the iron alone was close to the $300 price George mentioned about the low cost build. I had thoughts of asking $900 plus shipping and my paypal fee which is going to total right at $100. $1000. total. I feel like I would be leaving money on the table at that price. I honestly think an amplifier built the way I am building this one would be closer to being actually worth $1500. Since I have decided to keep the Premium I think it will alright to say my thoughts on pricing when I was considering selling it. The other two pretty wood builds of mine are built with what are called box joints that are made with a jig on a table saw. Not hand cut dovetails as this one and they were built with walnut and maple I believe. This one is built using solid cherry. This chassis starts out about as basic as you can get. Pieces of solid wood and heavy gauge sheet metal then cut and machined and put together with hand cut dovetails. Lots of myself put into this build. I need to hang on to this amplifier and enjoy it for a while and not sell it. I am enjoying it now just looking at it. I could use extra money for sure but I do not actually need any. I am getting by better than many with my SS.

  47. Bruce will like this: Trinity Sessions was with a Calrec Soundfield brand microphone for the instruments, and a Klipsch Pro Heresy for Margo's vocals who was 30' away, somewhat isolated with headphones for monitors. Recorded on a 2 - track Sony Betamax with an outboard digital processor (modified Nak).
