  10. Good Monday evening friends! Tonight, decided to join in. This sound track by famous film score composer Jerry Goldsmith was made known to me by listening to a Cinema music channel on XMradio. I PRE-ordered this special GOLD METALIC LP long before it's release which took the better part of a YEAR to arrive in the mail. Here is the front cover art with the 'limited edition' Irish Gold label.

  11. and I have to agree Sweetie sounds pretty darn good on my HIP Heresies without a sub. But there was something almost undefinable nagging at me. It didn't sound bad. It just wasn't lighting me up like I was hoping it would. I think adding a sub might be one of those things you don't miss until you have it. Then you realize you needed it. We'll get to that later but for now why wasn't I more enthusiastic about the overall sound? Again, it didn't sound bad but there was something I couldn't put my finger on that just wasn't there. At this point I should tell you I used to be something of a cable denier or skeptic. I didn't think interconnecting cables could make a big difference once you reach a level of competence and you're using "adequate" quality cables. I realize that, like so much around audio equipment, terms like "adequate" are highly subjective and I'm opening myself up to criticism. In fact, I'll probably be excoriated-if not excommunicated-because I will soon be offering some cables for sale in the Garage Sale section but in my humble, admittedly biased opinion upgrading from my entry level cheapos to some good quality Audioquest interconnects delivered an immediately discernible improvement in bass on my Heresies without a sub so I can now confirm Sweetie's bass is "mighty good".

  12. Hello Tim, I'm not sure what causes it. It generally occurs when I first power them up. It seems once they have warmed up it quiets down...as far as the R2R's my 4 track TEAC is slow to wake up...I have to give it some time to get going...a lot like me🤪 Cheers!

  13. thought so , I do remember that you´re a part time spinner and has a lot of business in the summer. JA of course , using the tubes not for a long time requires a " new " start and it takes a while , same with the R2R´s the machines must run 🤩 It´s Dinner time here , see you

  15. The question in my mind after reading this discussion is what constitutes “optimal sound.” Sure, amps can be designed with incredible specs such as minuscule distortion and phase shift, but will they be universally accepted as sounding better than units with lesser credentials? Not in my experience. I know guys who much prefer the sound of certain amps with certain speakers, neither of which have great specs, because they find it most pleasing. There are folks who actually like SETs with, in some cases, high 2nd harmonic distortion over those with a minimal amount (the original Darling 1626 amp comes to mind as an example of the former). Put a solid state amp in the system with immeasurable distortion and other sound influencing factors and they run out of the room. In my opinion, while it is always worth striving for amazing measured results, it may not always be worth the effort if the end user doesn’t like the sound. Maynard

  21. HA! I just looked at the invoice from Sound Stage Direct. The LP actually took a YEAR and one month to finally arrive after I ordered it! However, time for SIDE TWO and here is my 'vibe photo' featuring the R8 amp and Klipsch Forte 4's in their new position. Cheers 🍷

  22. Generally speaking, a good 2 channel amp will surpass a home theater receiver. That is *IF* you can hear the difference, *IF* you have a room layout that can let you set up speakers for best placement, and *IF* you want a new toy to play with. If you are happy with what you have, and it works for you, and you don't feel like opening up a can of worms, you may be better off with what you have. Denon makes nice receivers. Don't get hung up on "its old it must sound better". That is not always the case.

  23. Thank you. We miss him. Great tip. We have those furniture pens. I will try one in the back first and see how it appears, then apply the Howard’s. My wife wants to eventually stain the Klipschorns a darker color to match our other funiture, but it does seem very tricky. From pictures I’ve seen on eBay, the veneer is super thin and easily damaged. We might just live with the oak look and not risk it.

  24. Why thank you! I have missed you all as well. Summers are pretty busy for me. It is so nice to be able to finally spin a few records. I biased my 1960 Dynaco's and it took awhile before all the sizzling bacon sounds went away...😱 But all is quiet now. I'll be wrestling with these old reel to reel machines next. They don't like to sit dormant... Cheers!

  40. Here's the scoop with AVR power claims, as I remember it. Back in the 1970s, some stereo receiver manufacturers (everything was mono or 2-channel stereo back then) were making ridiculous power claims, like "Peak Music Power", for just one example, that produced wildly inflated power figures. It got so bad that around 1980 or so, the FCC stepped in and issued strict new specs. From then on, every receiver had to be rated and advertised as having "XX watts RMS into 8 Ohms from 20-20 kHz". The companies could still make other outrageous claims, but with power at least, there was finally a standard, which was adopted in several other countries as well. Great, right? All a reasonably informed consumer had to do was to look for the "watts into 8 Ohms 20-20 kHz RMS", and he or she would be fully informed. Then came the Audio Visual Receivers, the AVRs, and it was back to the Wild West, with the usual crazy claims. Now the manufacturers and dealers would just say their receiver put out 100 watts at 8 ohms 20-20k Ohms. "And did we tell you, it has 7 channels!" Many consumers would think, "Wow, that's 700 watts!" Not exactly. If you look a bit closer, you'll see "100 watts into 8 Ohms 20-20k, 2 channels driven". That last bit was what really mattered. If your receiver can put out 100 watts into 2 channels, that's a total of 200 watts. Therefore, if you happened to hook up 7 speakers, and if you had any program material that was equally loud on all channels, you'd be getting around 28.6 watts per channel. Depending on the particular amp type and wiring scheme, the number could be a bit higher or lower, but you get the idea. You won't find that number anywhere in the specs. The prospective buyer is left to make his simple but inaccurate calculation, and since most of them will rarely, if ever, use the full power of their receivers, the confusion carries on. They may upgrade to a receiver that puts out 110 watts per channel and has 9 channels, "So I've got 990 watts, right?" No, you have around 220 watts, more or less. Okay, that's as definitive as I can be without resorting to Google. What's the difference between a bottom-of-the-range "100x5" AVR and a midrange "100x7" or "100x9" AV receiver? Well, the better AVRs will have better DACs, and various other higher-grade parts. But what about all those "extra watts"? Do the better AVRS have better power supplies, so that they do put out more power than the basic units, but how much more? Your guess is as good as mine. One last thing: I didn't forget you smug guys with the AVRs that rate their power in however many speakers they have sockets for, like "200 watts into 8 Ohms 20-20 KHz, All Channels Driven". Respect Points to those manufacturers! I wish everyone could be as honest as that, but you'll hear excuses like "Who would buy a 30 Wpc AV receiver, when the next one over on the shelf, for the same price, offers 100 Wpc?" An educated consumer, of course, but they are usually in the minority, and the less attentive have just as much money to spend.
