  6. When I joined this forum (over 10 years ago), it was the peak of people modifying old Klipsch speakers, and I got interested and starting doing mods myself. There was a wealth of information contributed by some very talented and knowledgeable people. I joined the facebook one a couple years back, and soon found out that mods were frowned upon, and it was mostly promoting Klipsch products. I respected that, and was glad that this forum was still a safe haven for information on mods. Now it seems that this forum is patterning itself after the facebook one, and I wouldn't be suprised if they don't merge in the future. I said all that to say this: I can see all the mod people joining other groups, or starting a new group. I'll miss the old forum, but things change. There will always be an outlet for people to discuss their interests, if not here, than somewhere else.

  8. First of the LPs I bought at the flea market yesterday. Truth be told, I was hesitant to get it, because I remember the movie and how sad and (in parts) cruel this story, based on real events, was. But it´s Vangelis alright, reminescent of Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner...

  9. They all say the Paul Simon´s " Graceland " is his best , of course it´s good. Still totally underestimated is his " The Rhythm of the Saints " 1990 / WB Label / Made in Germany. This album is actually the follow-up to Graceland

  10. Roger A. Modjeski’s design challenge in creating the RM-5 was simple: "to provide excellent sonic performance at a price that represents a great value to the audiophile." And this goal was met as the preamp earned a Class B recommendation in Stereophile (Volume 13, No. 4). In Dick Olsher's words, the RM-5's bass is "tight and extended," the mids are "clean, with plenty of dynamic bloom," and the preamp generates a "spacious soundstage with convincing focus and resolution of spatial nuances.” He described the RM-5 as a "very enjoyable preamp," with "no serious sonic weaknesses top to bottom.” The RM5 has a line input plus two tape loops and a phono stage that accommodates moving magnet cartridges. The RM-5 features three 6922 tubes; this unit has one Sovtek and two JAN Philips 6922 tubes. An interesting feature is the adjustable gain; see the photo for more details. The power cord was upgraded a some point and there are four AudioQuest sorbothane feet. I sent the unit to Scott Frankland to be gone through. Among other services, he installed eight new Hexfreds and it is now performing at spec. Dead silent on my LaScalas. Cosmetics are about an 8 and performance is a 9 IMHO. $750 including shipping to you in the lower 48. Please email any questions. Thanks.

  13. Didn´t realise yesterday that this was a new LP until the store owner brought sealed copy from the back. Less than thirty years old at the time and already had that rotten voice. I love the athmosphere of this live one. Can´t wait to hear this on my Heresies, still waiting for those tweeters... This month, I hope...

  14. A couple thoughts from a guy who has been playing vinyl for over 50 years: todays remastered vinyl is a crapshoot. For example, I have two different "remastered" copies of the classic Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers. One is significally better sounding than the other. I'm not talking about noise, but the actual recording itself. Originals are always a good bet, but finding clean copies is getting harder and harder. About noisy vinyl, aka pops and clicks: I have found that the more expensive stylus profiles track much better and are a lot quieter, due to sitting deeper in the groove and further away from the surface noise. I'm talking about nude shabata, or fine line profiles. Vinyl is still one of the formats where spending more money on your playback rig will result in better sonics. Like it or don't.

  17. Sorry Bud to disagree with you here, both are superbly mastered and even not all Steely Dan Stuff sounds great !

  18. Pal Simon's stuff, especially those with the African percussion... tell me they couldn't be used for testing new gear like Steely Dan's recordings! @GWSmith you're going on about those Forte IV's like I was after I got my IIIs ! After hearing they have that long excursion woofer I know that helps. Played with Super Heresy for a bit, upgraded my v 1 to v 1.5 which was the same type of woofer... it could effortlessly thump & sounded good!

  20. First of all, they have been running non-stop for 28 hours. Sometimes via streaming, sometimes SACD, sometimes vinyl. The KM 4 has a sensivity of 94 dB at a FQ of 36 Hz to 20 KHz. I do not have to cranck it before it opens completely and everything is " there " . So from 65 dB sound pressure it fills the large room with a very open clearly structured stage. At higher levels, from 80 dB is here really the "hell" going on, impressive ! The KM 4 is very homogeneously tuned, the horn plays silky and crystal clear. They draw high resolution but just never "annoying. Weasel-quick is the emotional musical flow , with wonderfully localized voices. Piano passages make me think ..they are so so beautiful, fascinating ! Wind instruments...I hear the "blowing" of the mouthpieces, classical instruments are authentic in reproduction, really graceful to me. Everything comes very very smoothly as well as with a good portion of "emotion",amazing ! There is no "hole" in the FQ of 36 Hz > 20 KHz. Treble, brilliance, presence, midrange, midbass, upper bass, bass ..everything fits, meshes, sophisticated ! Subbass punch ? They do not have, they do not need, but it is absolutely precise in the lower FQ spectrum, the pitches are just right..stunning ! They are "all-round" flawlessly play through any genre. She wants you to listen to her ! They manage to take you on their musical journey. You don't get tired of them either...new tune = new attention to their performance...unusual ! Well..okay they get playback equipment from the 10 K€ league, that probably plays an important role behind the scenes, but it exhausts them and just gets everything out of them. The harmony between electronics and KM 4 fits apparently in this combination from the beginning, harmony ! So much for my first subjective impressions. It will remain exciting, because the tube preamplifier and mono power amplifiers as well as the hybrid options with the PM11-S3 pre- or power stage are waiting for the KM 4!

  22. I guess I should have been clearer in my first sentence there. I just wish the NEW rules were spelled out clearly. The guidelines seem pretty clear about courteous behavior, etc. I meant we need the rules about topic boundaries stated clearly. The "builder" (i.e. the person who put the modified speaker together) was me and I don't sell anything. The Forum member who built the replacement wood parts did it as a courtesy for me personally. As far as I know, he only builds DIY speakers for his own use. Of the two third-party parts that I mentioned, one is not a direct competitor to Klipsch as far as I can tell. Admittedly, I haven't looked at every page of their website, but it's certainly not obvious that it's a competitor. The other is actually an OEM supplier of a part for the Jubilee. So, the only thing I can conclude from this is that modifications can no longer be discussed here. If that is the case, spell that out in the community guidelines instead of enforcing an unstated rule.

  26. Sorry about the Belle thread. Heritage Jube for 2 channel. Guys talking wire pushed the envelope on courtesy talking. If every time a thread or topic gets deleted, we only know of 2 admin. doing so. They are in a position to do so. Deleted my advice as not needed myself. Klipsch know if they want this forum to continue. *Trey gave us clues. Corporate goodwill is what has been given by Klipsch owners. Expect the same from them like this forum... thanks. Rumor has it forum may discontinue. We shall see. Appears only the 2 admins. want to moderate this place. Never a word of asking for help in this matter. Maybe they will clue us in if there is an issue at all that are considering action upon. We want a forum where all is posting knowing what we post is good to go. Without fear as the tool hanging over our respective heads. This it is, and nothing more. Sorry for the plural we. Likely incorrect... Respectfully yours, bbb

  30. You been taking notes from the Captain? Jeesh another thread off the rails because the "smart" guys can't accept that people hear things differently, this is a hobby meant to be fun not a pissing match. Obviously different amps sound different otherwise as stated before why wouldn't there only be a single best design? Some of these threads look like they belong over at ASR.. When I switch amps things that stand out to me which are easy to recognize are bass impact slam clarity, very easy to perceive a difference in bass. Also soundstage size width and depth can sometimes vary by a lot. Going from my Sunfire amp to my Carver tube amp there is a large and very noticeable difference. Treble or upper midrange my speakers tend to be bright, some amps really bring that out while others seem to be smoother. Scale-- voices can sound "bigger" or smaller with different amps even tone can be different. These are just some of the most obvious things I can hear when swapping amps and in some cases the differences are really quite large and immediately noticeable.

  31. I had one of the very first SOT-23 in my hand in 1980 when designing the motherboard for the world's highest capacity hard drive at that time. Originally, SO stood for "Swiss Outline" because it was used in early electronic watches (remember the Bulova Accutron?). I wrote the very first article published in the SMTA newsletter, but I can't remember what year, all before the internet was born. In production, you can't beat the modern "chip shooters" that can "speed plop" into solder paste at 15-30 components per SECOND with 0.1 mm precision and repeatablity. The only thing we should consider COMICAL (the latest word by a few here), with verifyable PROOF, is looking at hand wired tube amplifiers that are 40 dB Noisier than modern Solid State gear!

  35. I am listening to this now on Dvd-A and it sounds crisp and clear in 9.2 using Dolby PLIIz, while enjoying a couple of Belhavens! I swear it sounds like I have a separate rear channel and the bass is thumpin'. 😎

  36. Based on what Travis and Roy say in that thread, my post about my modified Belle likely should not have been deleted. The modification was made for my personal use only. I have nothing to peddle. I also didn't call it an "upgrade". I stated that I made the modification to make it a closer timbre matched center to the Jubilee. So, to me the boundaries still aren't clear. Also, I should not have to find a particular discussion thread to know about them. They need to be in the community guidelines.

  38. Yes, the fact they deleted your thread for no obvious reasons is extremely frustrating to me for some reason. I understand some of these other threads lately as they turned nasty but you highlighting your new H-Jub's with a masterfully done Belle mod has me shaking my head in disbelief. Honestly if this is the new direction they might as well shut it down.

  43. If your system is continually evolving, as is the case for quite a few of us, the performance levels of the various components may not be equal at times, then you upgrade the weak link, and the quest goes on, until you decide you've spent enough money, run out of space, or found a level of satisfaction that makes it all worthwhile. Hopefully, the latter instance describes your situation. It describes mine.

  46. I'm not to up on any monetary valuations.... just thought I'd mention the sentimental side. Given she's in college, I'm presuming your daughter is of typical college age with "typical" concerns a young lady of that age group might have (whatever they may be). Obviously not knowing her, I think it would be a shame to sell these for "X" dollars to buy books.... or pay a college electric bill....and then 20 years down the road as she reflects on the memory of her grandfather, she realizes that she had something that he held dear, he wanted her to have and it's gone, all to buy books (or whatever). So yeah.... I'm trying to nudge you/her into the idea of keeping the memory alive. I realize she might get totally turned off by speakers this large (ala my poor wife).... but if not, then she's got something she can use the rest of her life to keep her Grandfathers memories and some of his experiences alive with her.
