  1. Pileophile. Piles and piles of stuff. Someday we’ll hear: ”Hi everyone. Well, I’m in the hospital. I was crushed by my 64.12.8.4 Home theater system. I shouldn't have flown the MCM’s.” “I know I haven’t posted in a few days, but I just now got back from the kitchen.”

  6. Have my eyes on another Stanton... 681-EEE I always wanted to try that one out. Have several Pickering barely used from the 70's I will be playing with as well. Always a tough choice I have so I am collecting more headshells. Currently have the Shure M91 ED, Empire 2000 and the Stanton 737 E mounted. When I get up the nerve I will mount the Micro Acoustics MA 530 MP up and spin with it a while.

  9. There is some of that, however I know a good number of people switching back. Over time the novelty has worn off, weariness of a room full of speakers and not that many good movies anymore. I'm in that boat myself.

  10. @RealMarkDeneen This forum is only great because of all the folks who have met up in person to get to know one another and have a good time. Mark, In 2005, while my first wife was dying from malignant melanoma, a group of folks on the forum got a (I think) refurbished Merlin from you, as a present to us. It drove an Dynaco ST-70 and a pair of JBL 4311 studio monitors in our bedroom every night, playing the music she liked as we fell asleep. Every night until she passed away three days after Christmas that year. It shall remain in the family. I have a list of the names of all those who chipped in to get it for us. I'm planning on having their names engraved on the top cover of the Merlin. That's the humanity this forum and technology has shown me and our family (forum member Invidiosulus, my oldest son, enjoys it when he's able to visit). Thank you for the memories.

  16. We had some visitors and they were impressed with the amount of records I had Now these visitors are 20 years older than me and they gravitated towards some Bing Crosby LPs I was sorting out So they wanted to hear them to reminisce Only to glad to oblige was my answer as a willing host Then out of the blue they wanted me to play Dan Fogelberg – Phoenix And that ended our listening session

  18. A good preamp could easily wake up those mono-blocks. I've had a couple really high end Denon AVR's years back and they did sound really good to me, could have easily been "good enough" at the time but I was still in the discovery phase and trying out lots of gear. I find with movies or TV I do not need fancy set ups, just the right hook ups, features and adequate power but for music I'm a bit more picky.

  20. One of the major advantages that the Cro-Magnon humans had over the Neanderthal humans was that the Cro-Magnons formed larger social/family groups, up to 150 people, while the Neanderthals lived in smaller groups of 10-15 individuals. The more people in a group, the more ideas, and the faster their knowledge and technology advances. The Internet makes us a group of billions, which is why our technology is advancing so quickly. Remember, the Internet was originally formed to allow a group of universities to share their ideas in real time. Right now, we need all the ideas we can get, in order to get us out of the mess that the Industrial Revolution got us into. Without the Internet, humanity, or at least civilization, would be at a greater risk than it already is. That’s a scary thought.

  25. I really liked the KG-4, they kind of surprised me being a 2-way I thought they were a very close runner up to the Quartet.

  28. Well , we have a small sec. audio market here in Germany and they offer the KG4 & KG 3.2 right now. I like these nostalgic Klipsch Speakers , They have an 90 x 40 degree Exponential Horn and no Tractrix Horn. I´ll know the difference between these horns anyway

  30. I found ou that the KM 4 is the same as the KG 3.5 . The KM 4 was for military overseas Army stations and the KG 3.5 for usual customers. KM 4 was distributed via the trading chain Aafes and the KG 3.5 via MOMS long time ago . Both trading chains doesn´t exsist anymore in europe. Just to complete this thread

  33. I don’t think people have drifted from home theater. If anything, people have drifted from serious music appreciation. All people seem to care about is how many speakers and subwoofers they can shove into a room with a gigantic screen. Who remembers back in the day how important it was to have the best stereo in your circle of friends? That’s long gone now. Who has the best and loudest home theater system is top dog these days. Shameful as it is…..

  35. I rebuilt six of my Cornwalls recently (Cornwall Is) using the aforementioned Parts Express gasketing tape and new stainless steel screws with eyelets. The screws are a half inch longer than original, but slightly more "meaty" though the threading yet with identical "pitch" to the thread. These being the "Hillman" brand - seemed to work out really well. Spent considerable time selecting them to make the best of the rebuild. The eyelets help a great deal to "fasten" the board to the mounting space and the gasketing (thicker/more substantive than it would first appear online) served to really seal that off and curtail that "resonance" issue. I was sold a set of otherwise all original Cornwalls on this forum some years ago that had this done, and noted how well that seemed to work, so I duplicated it in essence and got same results. But yes, if unattended that aspect of the speaker is really audible, and once it's "disappeared" you go "oh wow that really was an issue huh????" The eyelets really seemed to be a big part of it too - really "grips/locks down" the board edges and prevents vibration, and the added screw length/slightly more "filled out" thread made for a solid grip. The rear board will actually be offset/"stick out" about 1/8-3/16ish from the gasketing all the way around instead of flush, the gasket has substance and actually creates a bit of resistance....and it seals nice and tight. That gasket material is pretty good stuff.

  38. Our utility in Chattanooga has a solar share system (and no, we haven't signed up). The utility has the solar array on their property and you lease any number of them. They generate an average of 37kWh/month for each panel. Ther's no long term commitment and they do all the maintenance. You can lease panels for $3.50 per month and opt out at any time. You can lease for the life of the panel for $468.75 and a $10 yearly maintenance fee. They also have gigabit and 10 gigabit fiber to your home, having beat Google by four years. Their service is excellent

  40. George, You´re right, from our vantage point it´s a joke. But if You don´t know much about TTs and just want to take a peek? Ok, I think. Not everybody will spend several 100 bucks if they don´t know if they like it. I certainly would not exchange my Dual, with it´s all metall mechanics, with that ikea lightweight.

  41. Vinyl is hip since the 1960´tees , now 62 years later some guys notice that also ? 😂 BTW this has been the first TT built with origin IKEA elements , think it was built more than 7 years ago. and it´s working and shall have a really good sound reproduction, Got my doubts that the actual offered IKEA Model OBEGRÄNSAD is worth to listen to

  42. Hard to say really. My La Scala's have the original metal can polymer/foil in oil and what I started doing about 15 years ago was do a sweep of each output of the network, woofer, tweeter, and horn for a total of 3 plots per board. One time I removed the capacitors from one board and measured ESR at frequencies of interest. What I mean is testing the 2uF caps in my AA networks for ESR at 100Hz is not useful information. The 13uF I would test 500Hz through 20kHz. The 2uF caps I would test ESR from 5kHz through 20kHz. Comparing the ESR to what the impedance/reactance of these components are between these frequencies will tell you if losses are acceptable or not. I found the caps to be functioning great and since both networks matched closely and I was happy with the sound I haven't touched them. When sweeping the output of each section of the networks you are looking for a specific transfer function. If this function deviates from the desired intention the networks aren't doing what they were intended to do so one needs to figure out if the capacitors are the culprits and from the reliability of the inductors and transformers it almost always is going to be the capacitors. Basically at point of the intended frequency range where the part is at it's lowest impedance is where the ESR will have the largest losses, since capacitors impedance is lowered as frequency is increased this means that a high ESR will have the greatest losses at the extreme top range of high frequencies; I.e. at 20kHz. Basically I compared to a simulation with as close a parasitic properties as I could add to the models. When you adjust ESR for the capacitors in the simulation it will show the transfer of a network with old caps and high ESR. It will steepen the roll-off slope for the network which is why you'll hear many people report the speakers are brighter after the restoration. Problem is if ESR is a large enough factor in the networks going with an extremely low ESR cap like a modern Polypropylene it may have too low of an insertion loss making the speakers slightly brighter than when they were brand new out of the box. If you don't know what you are doing, or you don't know what you will like; for example an older person with severe hearing loss in the treble range may actually prefer a slightly brighter speaker. But to be safe use the Capacitors from @deang . They use the same dielectric as the originals which is probably the most important factor. If you want to try and get even closer to the original use a polyester and foil type. The ones provided by Dean are metallized film types which won't have a huge impact at all but will still make them have slightly different properties. The dielectric layers with a foil type will be a magnitude size larger vs metallized so they will be larger in size and also the dielectric properties will be more prominent. I have the new JEM caps from Klipsch in my 1975 Heresy's and they sound great. I do plan to switch over to a paper and foil type or polyester and foil and take some measurements between the them but I need to finish other projects first.

  43. Just in the spirit of piling on, beating a dead horse and giving my two cents on every subject. If you have a quality AV receiver that plays with ease at the volumes you require and makes music you enjoy there is NO reason to switch to dedicated two channel amplification. Anything else is cork sniffing. The goal of audio components IMHO is to play music you enjoy listening too. If that Denon gets your feet tapping and doesn't do anything untoward to the music you hear leave it alone and enjoy the music! Regards, Tony

  44. Some bands when I start listening I just need more. Finished my HOT chili so refreshments go with this album... Not doing weed and beer anymore with my music like decades ago, most of the time not even half that. Probably 70 to 80% cocoa it's a nice bittersweet flavor! What a record this one's got Dr Diamond at the end added on!
