  2. For me the only importance when it comes to speakers caps spec is if there is any danger to the speaker running out of spec caps. With a decades old amp, I definitely want the important caps changed out and updated for mostly safety reasons. But for a speaker, if a cap is out of spec, but being that way is of no particular risk to the speaker, listening to the speaker and deciding if I like the way it sounds is of most importance. I have no doubt that 40 year old caps in most cases are out of spec, but like component break in, or patina on a leather jacket, that might add to the overall presentation in ways that new caps will not. Again, this is highly personal and I have no issues with folks who disagree. But I've listened to enough gear and music, both recorded and live, over the course of 50+ years of doing it that I have a pretty good handle of what I like and what is right for me. That won't necessarily stop me from experimenting, as I did with my recent purchase of C*****S crossovers for my LS's and CW's. And it won't stop me from purchasing the approved Klipsch crossovers from Dean when I'm able to . I'm not stuck in my ways(at least I'd like to think I'm not) but I do know what I like.

  4. They are, whether you buy it or not. https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2019/10/28/4-the-internet-will-continue-to-make-life-better/ In the legal profession, alone, the Internet has enabled far greater efficiency and access to knowledge. Non lawyers can Google legal topics and become educated in legal matters in an instant. Professionals have legal research and practice management tools that allow them to provide value 10 times faster and at 1/10 the cost. This has leveled the playing field between sole practitioners and big law firms. The latter no longer have massive advantages due to combining resources of 10's and 100's of lawyers to achieve economies of scale. Basically, the Internet has "democratized" the legal profession and has eroded monopolistic access to knowledge and productivity. In many cases, it has altogether obviated the need to hire attorneys in the first place. It's not perfect, but the imperfections result from misuse and other human frailties. How many of your past customers have benefited by your ability to provide them with cheap and fast technical support over the Internet? Can't you remember the days when people had to hurry through long distance phone calls due to the cost, alone? These inefficiencies were impediments to progress. The Internet prevents the need for them to box up and return products for repair and instead, allows you to quickly educate them and allow them a meaningful opportunity to solve their problems incredibly more easily. "Multitasking" was hardly a concept in the pre-internet era. I'm not going to bother to argue the benefits of multitasking. Sure, you can find a million things to complain about. That life. Big deal! To extend the reasoning of your quote, I will reply, "The world had idiots long before the Internet, too. Nowadays, we have a lot more geniuses."

  7. The internet is just a transport vehicle for data. There is good data and bad data. There is a lot of good stuff out there, but it has also empowered those who believe that their uninformed opinions stand on equal ground with facts. You can spend a half day wading through the BS to find the truth of a thing. I find it exhausting.

  8. Still stimulating the economy or I should say LF is. Put an aluminum fence with brick columns around the back yard, mega landscaping, and a sidewalk on the other side of the house. Just got plans and an estimate for a free standing deck with pergola to house the new hot tub LF ordered. She swears it will make me feel like a new man? So what did I buy? A JB4 tuning module for the Z4. Makes it scoot a little more. The company that installed it was not up to snuff on some things. I had asked if I could monitor and change maps (power increase) from my tablet and they said I could. After installation they tried the app on my windows 10 tablet without success. After waiting to hear back I called the module supplier who advised that the module is not compatible with Windows! It still works but I can't monitor what power it's making or use any of the other features. I had paid $150 for the module to be supplied with bluetooth for that purpose. Internet okay here but I still don't have a cell phone. Not a priority for me plus someone may call me if I did have one! Leaving LF's place and headed to my house to blow pine straw off the roof. So that's it for now. You gents have a fun weekend!

  9. Have you tried any of those wifi through the wiring extenders? Think it was dtel and a few others talking about them a couple years ago here. It was at 16 kb/sec when I disconnected the pc and called them yesterday. Up to the normal 50 Mb and better now, but it's such a hassle to get to them ... I'm done. Happens way too often (deserve a rebate) and all my calls over wifi went to voice mail yesterday.

  10. this have been my conclusion after listening to them before I dissembled them some days ago First of all, they have been running non-stop for two weeks . Sometimes via streaming, sometimes SACD, sometimes vinyl. The KG 3.5 has a sensivity of 94 dB at a FQ of 36 Hz to 20 KHz. I do not have to cranck it before it opens completely and everything is " there " . So from 65 dB sound pressure it fills the large room with a very open clearly structured stage. At higher levels, from 80 dB is here really the "hell" going on, impressive ! The KG 3.5 is very homogeneously tuned, the horn plays silky and crystal clear. They draw high resolution but just never "annoying. Weasel-quick is the emotional musical flow , with wonderfully localized voices. Piano passages make me think ..they are so so beautiful, fascinating ! Wind instruments...I hear the "blowing" of the mouthpieces, classical instruments are authentic in reproduction, really graceful to me. Everything comes very very smoothly as well as with a good portion of "emotion",amazing ! There is no "hole" in the FQ of 36 Hz > 20 KHz. Treble, brilliance, presence, midrange, midbass, upper bass, lower bass ..everything fits, meshes, sophisticated ! Subbass punch ? They have, the pitches are just right..stunning ! They are "all-round" flawlessly play through any genre. She wants you to listen to her ! They manage to take you on their musical journey. You don't get tired of them either...new tune = new attention to their performance...unusual ! Well..okay they get playback equipment in the 10 K€ league each , not depending as I run them with Hybrid Mode ( Tubepre with SS powerstage or Transistor Pre with Tubemonos , or Tubepre with Tubemonos, or as Transitor Pre > SS powerstage ) That probably plays an important role behind the scenes, but it challange them and just gets everything out of them. The harmony between electronics and KG 3.5 fits apparently in these combinations from the beginning, endlessly harmony !

  15. Today I took care of the internal parts of the KG 3.5. The single wire terminals are rebuilt, the new pole binding posts are in place. Here you can see the old solid brass binding posts, after all these were far better quality than the ones on my RF7 MK II

  18. Congrats. I love my Forte IV. I never really worried about break in. I put my tuner on and just let it play for many hours without listening critically. I do this every time I make a change to the system. I really believe "break in" is half acclimation and half mechanical / surround compliance with speakers. Thats why just playing FM takes the analytical judgment out of the equation. Then after a week or so listening casualty I will form opinion.

  21. I wonder what the odds are of finding some K-77-M's that haven't had their diaphragms changed out. I can't tell, but it sounds like you are suggesting the K-77-F has the 5 watt rating, but it doesn't. Also, the K-77-F will only fit if the cutout is large enough. So, that would be anything where the Z-brackets were supported.

  25. It is probably hard to see through all the busses, airplanes, cars, skyscrapers, yachts and Lambos - but for 2-1/2 million years human lived quite successfully without all that. 99% of our very successful history is pre-civilization. I'm thinking now of guppies in a home aquarium. They wonder: "How could we have lived without this bubbling pirate chest, this cute little castle with nifty holes in it, and these groovy plastic plants?" They are captured by a force they will never live to understand. They are enslaved to the whims of Little Jimmy Smith, and their destiny is sealed. But hey! They're alive right? And Jimmy dumps food in every day so why fret little guppy? Our fishbowl looks groovy too! And "Little Jimmy Dean" dumps food in our bowl too. And we have nice toys to play around with too! And thinking back to ancestors in the Garden of Eden, that's pointless too! Who the heck cares about freedom, the human spirit, peace, Nature, right and wrong, our fellows in the animal kingdom, our spiritual journey in the Universe? We've got Nintendo man! <---Metaphor for a bubbling pirate chest. We are born INTO a world we didn't make. Others made it to suit their objectives just like Little Jimmy built his aquarium to his standards, for his goals and purposes. Humans have the will to survive and "common humans" (the standard of the species) accepts the idea of "circumstance" and swims through the castle, past the plastic plants and around the pirate chest because that is the circumstance they are in now. They can't jump out and go find a river - Jimmy made sure of that. And we can't jump out and find a mountain - just ask Vicky Weaver about that. But, that doesn't mean we should remain unaware, fast asleep, and unconscious. And it doesn't mean we should commit suicide the way captive killer whales in tanks are doing. The pure genious of the gurus Jesus, Lao Tzu, Gautama Siddhartha, and others, who all made the same discovery, keep the lights on for humanity. With different words from different cultures they all say the same thing: The Kingdom of Heaven awaits our discovery - and it's not behind the wheel of a yellow Lambo. It WAS here on Earth until all the Little Jimmys of the world tried to bottle it up for their purposes. Like humanity needed pyramids? We needed a thousand wars? We needed atomic bombs? We needed to kill all the whales for some lamp oil? We needed to pollute the blood of every man, woman and child in America so some chemical madman could make Teflon pans? We needed to fill the oceans with plastic debris so Mom could put the leftover peas in a little plastic jar? This utter immoral NONSENSE of civilization is peddled to common humanity as "progress". All any person has to do is open their eyes a little in 2022 to see how utterly SICK humanity has become by eating a bowl of "progress" every day for 15,000 years. The mythological accounts of the Garden of Eden have longevity for a reason.

Now I’m just happy to have them and enjoy them everyday. Either way they’re lifetime speakers. Just enjoy them and months or years down the road it may hit you that they are damned amazing!

  31. Just for info those old can caps are motor run caps designed to work in your home air conditioner among other uses. The oil is there to keep the cap cool for it's designated purpose. Never intended for crossover networks but is great for that use as well. Not like the old paper in oil capacitors where the oil is there to prevent the paper from absorbing moisture from the air shorting the cap. The oil is not needed for any purpose in a crossover network and I dare to say pour the oil out and the capacitor should work perfectly fine in a crossover network environment. Not that I would do so but just so one understands what the oil is there for. They are prone to leak laying down. Especially the ones made decades ago. If it leaks sitting it upright on the crossover board will solve the leaking problem and it will function just fine. All the talk of the ESR of a cap is over rated when it comes to crossover capacitors. A few micro numbers over spec does not mean it is bad, just getting weaker. Could actually improve the sound for many listeners. For a cap to be bad the ESR number would have to be much more than spec and not just a few fractions out of spec. Rarely happens in a crossover network. In other words when you buy a new Heritage speaker you really have no need to replace anything in your lifetime. Made that way from the beginning and from all I have seen on net the same today. As far as oil in cap being dangerous, I seriously doubt it. No need for expensive oil to keep a capacitor from overheating. Most likely just some kind of thin petroleum oil. AC transformers another story, stay away from that oil. When those can caps were used capacitors were expensive. More so than iron. Not the case anymore. If I were contemplating replacing capacitors in my networks I would definitely go with Klipsch authorized capacitors. Why would one want anything else in their Klipsch speakers?

  34. That’s what I’m saying. I just knew it was a non-Klipsch part. I didn’t even know it was like a 510; I just knew that it was not an actual 510. A knockoff is even worse than a sort of similar part. It might be a bit like the time my dad was on holiday in the Caribbean and bought a Rolex knockoff on the street for $100. To my eyes, it did look like the real thing, so good deal, right? However, Dad wasn’t sure how to set the watch, so he walked into a watch shop that sold Rolexes and asked the salesman how to do it. The salesman instantly knew what it was, and he was not pleased. However, he did help Dad set it. Roy might have had the same reaction.

  40. Not true. PCB is used in high voltage xfmrs and the like to retard fire and heat breakdown; it is nearly inert and almost will not breakdown. It is difficult to get it to burn in a coal-fired furnace at 3000F. It was not used in the motor caps Klipsch put in the Type AA. I doubt the older boxy caps used in the Type A had it either. It's pretty expensive stuff. https://www.tedss.com/2020005873 But a leak means replacement is needed. The oil conducts heat and improves the insulation of the dielectric.

  45. Point of clarification ........ A bit over 20 years ago, Roy did have a working version of the Jubilee bass bin that consisted of a pair of 12 in woofers (probably k-31s, I think) and a drone (or passive radiator). The unit was measured and found to have about 1/3 less distortion (or was it 1/3 of the distortion) of the Jubilee bass bin. It also had a deeper bass extension. They were still working on it when PWK became ill. At that point any further refinement was halted. Further, this prototype bass bin was described by HDRbuilder when he visited some friends at the factory/shop. His description is a bit contorted but he was clear on the 2 woofers and drone and how they fed into the bass horn. Personally, I had attempted a few measured drawings (mostly guess work based on the above) and for the life of me I could not figure out how they shoe-horned that drone in between the two woofers and still maintain the flare (the space is cramped). The overall cabinet size was not all that larger than the original (underground) Jubilee. At this point I have probably said more than I should have, but this info is public and can be gleaned from various posts and threads from that time period. I and others were also contacted by this guy and invited to help out. with this "new drone version". I (and I guess others) saw the project as a dead end and declined to participate. I spent a long time scratching my head over this prototype and whether I could partially replicate Roy's work for my own home system. I guess this is my way of reminding the group about "giving credit where credit is due". That Roy is one smart cookie.....
