  3. You are aware the first one is the prototype which is the infancy stage. Circuit design, layout, bench and listening tests etc... all take time. If you or people cannot understand that the design process takes a bit of time then I don't know what to say. I do this as a hobby in my spare time. I do 100% agree that the idea morphed, it was supposed to be "cheap" or more accurately "inexpensive". Shakey liked the idea but wanted it dolled up and fitted with only the best. Since he was willing to fund the prototype I felt that was a reasonable enough compromise. The only headache I see is the fact people are expecting the time frame of an already designed product that only needs to be built which was never the case. Yes Shakey need only be patient but he gets the very first amp in a very nice package with all the best parts. Since funding the prototype he pays only for parts which is I thought a great deal but it's a prototype and been a tough long process. I think we succeeded in getting excellent results and I'm sure he will agree after hearing it. I think the best way to move forward is with the original idea of the "cheap" forum amp which I will not need to have anyone pay for parts up front. The reason for Shakey paying for parts up front was because the parts were very expensive. I will only list and sell already made amplifiers. If people want to build their own I'll sell the boards and whatever else they need to them and let them assemble it.

  8. Joe is in town ... Decided I needed to cut some of this firewood down to a more manageable size. Of course, the saw wouldn't start/run. Primed by dumping fuel into the carb... fired right up... until that ran out. Checked the furl filter. It was OK, but, the fuel line had collapsed. 20 years+ old... I can't understand...LOL Pulled a bush fix. Under the flint in bic lighters is a small diameter spring a couple inches long, if you stretch it out a little.... Worked the spring into the fuel line to hold it open...back on line. I could replace that fuel line myself, but, I hate working on chainsaws... I'll take it to the shop

  13. At a minimum you want 2-channels in and 4 channels out. That will allow you to biamp the two speakers. This is what I did. What if however, down the road, you decide you want to add a subwoofer? You can better dial it in if you have an active... This is also what I did. This is when I realized I needed another active so got a second EV-DX38 since I had one and knew how to program it. Now I have two units, two plugs and decide after a couple years, I really want to simplify. ChrisA was reporting good things about a Xilica active crossover. So having blind faith in his opinions (which are usually good and safe bets to follow) I bought a 4-in, 8 out Xilica. Now with one unit, I can do what otherwise had taken me two units. Save some space, simplicity.... but the values that the DX38 uses do not purely change over so if I recall, I had to do some estimations on what the EV required and how it equated to the format of the Xilica. Roy, unless it's changed, used at the time (I presume he still uses) the DX-38. It would be nice if he'd "curve" some actives so they could be literally plug & play. If you get an EV unit, I've already posted the parameters that you'd use (with the K69a driver). Once you change drivers, then you're tweaking a bit. Some have that experience and/or tools handy, I don't so I rely more on plug & play.

  18. I wanted to revive this thread after spending a few months with my Toolshed Transcendence 300b amp. I have it paired with Forte IVs and was originally using it with a Zesto Leto preamp. The amp is equipped with the optional CTC vintage power transformer, Hitachi Fine Met Amorphous OPT , Mundorf sio caps, Jupiter caps, Khozmo stepped attenuators and outfitted with new Western Electric 300b power tubes, Amperex 7788 input tubes and a Raytheon 274b rectifier. The quality, fit , and finish of this amp is not fully appreciated until you see it first hand. It is a work of art that sounds just as good as it looks, maybe better. Pics do not do this amp justice !!!! The inside is nicely laid out, very high quality hand made turret boards and clever use of mounting hardware and stand offs. There is no plastic in this amp, no zip ties, no double face tape everything is securely mounted with hardware. I was surprised how mechanically quiet and free of noise this amp is. It is remarkably quiet , Zero hum or noise from the chassis and a black , quiet background free of noise or hum. This for me is crucial. I have sold a few pieces of gear that sounded good but had even the slightest hint of self noise. I have never had a SET amp, my last few amps were all push pull pentode types, EL34, 6L6 , etc. This amp has a purity and transparency that I have never experienced first hand. It is well balanced top to bottom. Obviously it's midrange is amazing but it really surprised me in the bass region. It is deep, tight , and never flabby like they are "supposed" to be. I rarely turn my sub on since getting this amp, it's low end is so good for most material, the sub muddies up the low end. I'm not going to try to sound like a reviewer, I will say this was the best audio component purchase I have ever made in 40 plus years of enjoying hi fi. This amp is so good I am having Matt build me the companion DHT preamp. Www.toolshedamps.com https://i.postimg.cc/7YRx8SXQ/B25-B2495-3-AF4-4807-ACCF-DFA55-D0549-D6.jpg

  19. Hi all, I am new to the community and to the Klipsch world. I just purchased a pair of R-41PM speakers and connected them to my Samsung TV via optical cable. There is loud, crackling sound! I read that usually a damaged or broken cable is usually the cause. But in my case crackling/static sound happens either when the TV is off, or when media is playing through streaming services (both Netflix and Amazon Prime). When I play something via the Youtube app on TV, or via Spotify app, the sound is perfect and I amazed how good these R-41PM sound! I am not sure if the cable is to blame, otherwise i would hear crackling while watching youtube or listening to music. As a result of this wired situation I am forced to turn off the speakers every time I turn off the TV otherwise the crackling noise is unbearable. To eliminate other causes, I connected the speakers via bluetooth and no issues at all there in any situation. Tried to plug and unplug....same. Also, as soon as I disconnect the cable from the TV the noise goes away. I'm positive the issue is this type of connection, but not sure if the cable itself is the cause or if there is something else I am missing..... Anyone has had a similar wired experience? Thanks in advance! Erald EDIT, SOLVED: With more testing I discovered that Netflix and Prime were using Dolby Audio and not the traditional PCM method. When changing Samsung TV audio settings to PCM, the noise goes away. Even when TV is off. Hope this helps other people running in the same issue as I did.

  20. Thank-you. I don't know why the serial numbers are close, but not consecutive. either the Dealer did not distribute consecutive serial numbers or a previous owner had 2 pairs and he did not pay attention to the serial numbers when selling the 1st pair ., as you can see , both pie badges from the early 2000's are on the right side , instead of left and right The finish on the speakers is quite degraded. What was the original finish on the speakers (e.g., oiled walnut)? Please post more pictures of the panels on the top-sides , it's either a stain on raw birch or a veneer @JRH may know more from the log books There isn't any sign that there had been a gasket/foam seal on the removable rear panel. Should there be one? No , the speakers are original , but you can add some foam if you wish

  24. I recently bought my first oled TV (a LG C2 which weight about 55 pounds). Wall mounting is not an option and I was wondering if I could set the TV on top of a Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-504C II center channel speaker. It would make my life a lot easier if this is possible, ha.

  25. I listen to mostly FM radio, and lower powered stations (88-92MHz). While I live in a reasonable location with several stations to choose from, the signal strength can vary for many reasons. And since I live in a condo, an outside antenna is out of the question. I've gotten to a point where I can get a reasonably strong signal, through the use of a tunable indoor antenna (the B.I.C. Beam Box), and an FM tuner with a switchable IF filter (Yamaha). About six months ago I was working at a high rise apartment complex when I spied an old, no longer used, Channel Master TV signal amplifier for the distributed TV signal from the days before cable TV. I also noticed it had an FM "trap" or notch filter which led me to believe I could use one to improve my FM reception. I asked the customer if I could have it but they never got back to me. So I searched eBay thinking that's the only place I'd find such a "vintage" item. Well, I could even find NEW ones! So I bought one. For twenty-five bucks I figured if it didn't work it wouldn't be a huge loss. I'll be damned; it works great! I adjusted the gain so I wouldn't saturate the front end on any station by adjusting the Gain knob so signal strength is just shy of full-scale. The only drawback was I had to use a screwdriver because the knob is almost impossible to grasp; some models don't appear to have that quirk. But I still was curious; could I improve the signal even more? Down the rabbit hole I went. I discovered Magnum Dynalab sold the MD-205 Signal Sleuth FM Amplifier. This is the Cadillac of the FM amp above. But it costs $500! I couldn't bring myself to spend that much. After a period of time while searching eBay I found one for sale but the price was about $300. Better but a little bit too rich for my tastes, and I didn't know if it would work, whether new or used. So I forgot about the idea. Until last week. Seems Magnum Dynalab made a similar product years ago under the Magnum label called the FM Power Sleuth. Slightly different name; would it work the same? The form factor was not the rack/stackable shape of the new model, but I imagined the guts had to be similar. Again, I found it on eBay but this older unit was going for a paltry less than $100 shipped. I didn't have to think twice about this one! Other than the non-stack friendly shape, it's fine. The knobs turn silky smooth and better than the cheapo version I earlier owned, the tuning dial only amplifies the frequency of interest. F-connectors on the back, and an AC cord. I get a minimum 30% increase in signal strength even with the gain set where you see in the photo. For all you FM junkies out there, if you have reception issues, this is the ticket. In fact, even the budget ASKA model above works great, just get a similar brand with a gain knob you can grasp with your fingers but honestly, I've mostly "set and forgotten" it, and it still does the job.

  29. I've powered my 30's with many amps/pres/old receivers. My personal opinion is I would hook em to that 1010 and see if I thought it was good, bad or great. My 30's run on my Sansui 990 and 5000x and was just fantastic to listen to. I also had em on my sx980, again great, just slightly less full but very clean and articulate. I had them hooked to an Anthem mrx700 in my HT, and again no complaints. Even my lowly old Sherwood s7100A made the 30's sound really sweet, quite a surprise. I hooked my 980 to a Parasound hca 1500a, 315watts per at 4ohms. The result was massive bass that had been hidden by the 980 alone. To end it here, you'll need to try different amp/pre to get where you want to be. But ,it's fun....

  31. Time to get a move on or maybe just a groove on. 1970 it is! For now anyway. Poco was an American country rock band originally formed in 1968 after the demise of Buffalo Springfield. Guitarists Richie Furay and Jim Messina, former members of Buffalo Springfield, were joined by multi-instrumentalist Rusty Young, bassist Randy Meisner, and drummer George Grantham. Poco are considered one of the founders of the Southern California country rock sound, and three of the members of the band have been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as members of other bands (Furay with Buffalo Springfield, Meisner and Schmit with The Eagles). However, the band has yet to receive a nomination since entering eligibility in 1995. Just for you John!

No wifey so he's takin another guy I know, Joe's home and he's doin the show the right way. Doors @ 430, First band up @ 6 and ending @ 1130. Just like the old day's. Gonna paint the place then strobe people to death is the game plan. The venue they're in is so easily adaptable for sound I'm sure it will sound fantastic. He's a bit stoked himself goin back to his roots for one last ride. I just hope my mailman doesn't go POSTAL! 😂

  37. While that's true as a general rule, are you suggesting that people forgo purchasing their dream speakers just because the only option they have is a small room? Perhaps one day I'll bother moving to a house with a bigger room for them. However, I didn't see any point waiting for what may be years to own a pair of Jubilee The Klipschorn specifically has issues in small rooms due to how it's designed. This is due to the wide splay angle between the bass bin horn mouths. I believe it was Jim Hunter who said that you need to be about 12 feet away for the bass horn mouths to sum properly and then integrate with the MF/HF. The Jubilee does not suffer from this limitation. The speaker acts almost like a point source. You can get quite close to the Jubilee, and it still sounds like one integrated sound source. The Jubilee is nothing like the Khorn in the regard.

  38. Because of the large horn the imaging and soundstage remains the same. Outside the bass if full and does not falter because they are set to curve flat in half space which basically means that you at least have a floor. In rooms you start to add room gain and Michael mentioned he removed most of that. Will they sound good outside? Yes. Will they sound good in a large room 30x40? Yes. Will they sound good in a small room? Yes. That’s they beauty of large constant coverage horns. Hope this helps.

  40. This is somewhat an orange vs tangerine comparison but my 396ll w 510/K691 combination pretty much lays waste to my stock LaScala mid/tweet top end. And I’m surprised to say as much as I love LS horn bass the 396’s with a moderately sized sealed sub is a force to be reckoned with. The 510/691 combo doesn’t put fear into the 402/Faital HP but it sounds really, really good. I’m pretty sure it’s superior to the stock LS top end.

  41. Hence the reason why you're better off skipping them, or it will compromise your phantom imaging. I discovered about 15 years ago when I used Audyssey. They all work in a similar fashion. I currently use YPAO from Yamaha and I do the same thing. 1 mike reading only. You're welcome.

  43. When I had visited my (not yet wife) in China, we rode from Shenzhen to Jiangxi and back multiple times. The trains in China keep to their schedules pretty well. We always took an overnight train, as the run was/is about 830 km. Since we were going low budget, we were in cars that had a hallway on one side with open spaces for 3-high bunks (6 people in the sleeping area. No privacy or doors. You just kept your hands on your suitcase as you slept.

  44. Let me digress for a moment… Three books from Bob Cordell, Doug Self and Randy Sloane should have tube equivalents, but they don’t. I found these books back in the day to clearly explain the mechanisms at work in amplifier design. If you design an amp and omit any of the distortion/linearity mechanisms, then you have intentionally designed the amp to be less the optimum and thus introduced your sonic signature to the design. If every amp manufacturer followed the text book, we would all be buying the same amp. Some designers think mechanism “A” has less effect than mechanism “B” and they design accordingly. My point is, is that is all about the circuit design, not so much the boutique parts. If you understand the mechanisms, you design your amp and choose adequate parts to supplement your final design. If one part changes the sound of your design significantly , your design is flawed.
