The Quicksilver Horn Mono Amplifier is designed specifically for use with very efficient loudspeakers. It has extremely low noise and distortion as well as having 18db less gain than Quicksilver’s standard amplifiers. They are early pre-production models with barrier strips rather than banana taps for speakers. I use the attached banana adapters (which are included). But, they come with a important plus: more capacitance than the current production model. They are dead quiet on my LaScala IIs and sound lovely. The KT88s give appropriate bottom end while running EL34s the midrange is liquid. These amp have no sonic issues and no cosmetics ones except for zero wife acceptance factor. Comes with KT88s and NOS Mullard 7247s. I will ship in the original factory boxes (two) and a separate box for tubes.

It's really not that difficult to understand. Especially for someone whom, IMO, on the forum tries to project the persona of a financial brain trust, knower of markets, crypto expert, etc. I would also guess that your short, terse replies are more trolling than really not getting it. I'd wager you've got time on your hands and are looking for a fun back and forth argument or just trying to bait people. Which is cool, everyone likes to stir the pot from time to time... myself include. Let's just assume I'm wrong about all that. I'd also bet you already had your mind made up about solar possibly, you didn't even listen to somebody's "spiel" (but I'll take you at your word on that). BTW, a guy on the internet like me or a person whose neighbor has panels and the owner explained it to your neighbor and your neighbor explained to you doesn't count. It's no more difficult to grasp than refinancing your house. In the simple house example it's going to cost you $3,000 to refinance and it's going to take you x-months of savings to recoup that $3,000. If I plan to stay in the house more than x months I really have no financial choice but to refinance. I might have other emotional reasons not to but, the numbers say refinance. Conversely if I plan on selling before I break even there's no reason to pay money just to have a smaller house payment because in the long run it will cost me more. I think even a middle school kid could grasp that. There are never any absolutes but with a little homework I think you can make some reasonably safe assumptions to start the cocktail napkin calculations. First and foremost the cost of electricity is probably (not absolutely) going to stay the same or go up. I can't really think of many things we consume on a regular basis that don't go up. For the sake of argument let's take the best case it stays the same. The system costs you roughly 20 grand. How much are you going to save every month/year? Will that annual or monthly savings be more than the time you plan to stay in the current house? If the answer to that last question is no there's no reason to worry about any other esoteric what if scenarios. You should not consider it. If on the surface it looks like the time spent with the solar panels would save you money in the long run, it's time to dig a Little deeper. Can you pay for it all up front or do you have to finance it or do you have to sell your $100 KHorns for $11K horns to help pay for some of the 20K? If you're financing it, the time you spend in the house and or the monthly savings have to be greater. Could you take the 20K for panels and do something else with it that makes you more $$$ than your electricity over that same period costs? Could you do something with that 20K that makes you more happy like a world-class vacation and a lifetime of memories? Where are they going to be located on my house and if I find them ugly will I regret it every time I drive down my street? If utilizing the money in a different manner than solar panels makes you happier screw the panels and do what you want. Things like roof replacement, panel disposal and future buyers turning up their nose are all red herrings. Those issues are already been addressed long ago and are baked into the price of a high quality system. In my experience, these arguments are typically thrown out by people who already have a bias towards solar panels or have spent zero time talking to a high quality solar installation company. You need to get actual references from installations they've done years prior and talk to the homeowners to find out both their experience with the company and the expected versus realized gains. The technology changes quickly and the panels only get more efficient so if you compare numbers today to somebody from 5 years ago you can only do better. So what's not to get?

The wife’s voice measures in at around 80 db , so 85 db is my magic number ,anything less than 85 , I will get a horrible duet effect🤓 . When the little lady isn’t around, 75 db peaks are satisfying, I’ll listen at 100 db peaks occasionally with some of my favorite music , but only for a few minutes ,a movie with really good special effects and outstanding use of LFE can sound phenomenal at very high levels , I’ve measured 110 peak at my listening position , but after the awesome scene, the volume is returned to sane levels.🤓

SOLAR PANEL: So I just went thru the SOLAR schpeel here at the house because I was understandably curious. it all sounded wonderful and so... 'responsible'. It wasn't as expensive and I thought it was going to be, but I have some serious questions. Our quote was only $21k all in @ 3.99% for 20 years... But when I priced the panels out myself and it only came to $4,000 (leaving $17k). Surely I am not going to do the job myself and according to the sales person, it's a four hour job and while there some other costs for wiring and an inverter (I will allot another 3$k) that leaves $14k... that's like $3500hr in labor. So lets say, I am paying $100 a month for the system over 20 years, and my monthly payment for wired electricity is $100-$140 (summertime) a month over the same time period, it is basically a wash in terms of capital outlay, and it appears to me that I am paying $21,000 over 20 years for some over priced photovoltaic hardware to sit on my roof. This current generation technology is getting older and older and is probably already outdated before its bolted to my roof. At this point I don't think this is for me... I am not that 'energy conscience'.

Application specific. Like Wind turbines, and EVs no subsidies no sales. A bigger problem is that none of these are recyclable with lots of toxic waste. Remote Island, sure wind and solar make sense. Next door to to a nuke, no way.

I’ve had a couple pairs of Chorus 2s, and Cornwalls, and Forte 2s, and Heresys, and… over the years, and still own a pair of KP-301s(Professional Series Chorus 1). Listening to them “as we speak”. I really think the Tractrix midhorn presents a less forward (more studio) sound than the exponential horns in a the “1” series Forte and Chorus and Cornwalls. Others on here have told me this is not true, but still… I tried titanium midrange diaphragms(with the requisite bandpass filters) in the Chorus 2s, but after about 70db they lose their sparkle and push back. Real sweet up to that point, give or take a few dbs. What has ALWAYS made an immediate, and not optional from where I sit, improvement was titanium tweeter diaphragms, or even better, an un-named machined aluminum horn lens with an un-named DE-120 driver. Now, if I was a crafty fellow, and didn’t mind hacking an OEM pair of Chorus 2 crossovers, or possibly build a board from scratch, I would swap out the autoformer with one that has 1db increment taps, put a swamping resistor across 0 and 5 and see what a little goosing would do to the neutrality of the mids. As it stands I would NEVER have sold my Chorus 2s had I not found a pair of KP-301s. There is no replacement for displacement, and I don’t want to think of a world without K-48 woofers. …gotta go, Ozzy is on stage, lol

…on a quiet night, La Scalas around 60db are wonderfully engaging. After the day had today KP-301s cranked to 11 sounded about right.

It’s fine I guess, good enough for rock n roll cranked up. The kids like it and I can make copies of my LP’s for the to listen to without me having to worry about how they are treating the vinyl.

I went solar when I built my house because in the bigger picture the 15K after all the tax credits/rebates was a small chunk of the total home build budget. It has been nice not having an electric bill for 11+ years. And once a year I get a $200 check on average for excess generation.

No. There are no outputs on the R8 that I can see, only a pre in. Unless the behringer has high level inputs.

Fuses don't blow for no reason. Short in the speaker or wires could blow the fuse. Inspect the pre amp tube, maybe a new one is in order. Open the unit first and look for brown spots, melted insulation, lose connectors or wires etc. ensure the solder joints are good and no capacitor leaks or shorts between components from extra solder.

I just refinished some Chorus IIs with oil based urethane, Sand, apply with a foam brush, repeat two times. The finish is glass smooth to the touch.

I sit a little over 14 ft from each speaker and I listen at pretty spirited levels. I'd say I average 80-85 db with 95 db peaks. Unless I'm listening to "girl at piano" music or something similar.

Thanks, Randy! Hmm, I wonder whether the AL-4 upgrade would be applicable and useful for 1974 AA models? Would there be gains in sound quality and sensitivity? One could be increased; the other would be more of a challenge.

Let me get this straight. To fix these units you guys are buying different power supply boards instead of fixing the one that's already in them? I suppose if you don't have the tools and knowledge to troubleshoot the broken one I have to say this is a pretty ingenious method albeit more expensive. The reason I think this is so amazing is that instead of more stuff heading to the landfill people are diy'ing a solution to get their gear up and running again. It shows that with some fortitude your average Joe can fix their own amplifier if willing - well and has a basic understanding of electronics and knows how to solder. Awesome thread!!

I just picked up a pair of Heresy 1s on Friday. 😄 I’ll be refurbishing them when the warm weather returns.

Because of the large horn the imaging and soundstage remains the same. Outside the bass if full and does not falter because they are set to curve flat in half space which basically means that you at least have a floor. In rooms you start to add room gain and Michael mentioned he removed most of that. Will they sound good outside? Yes. Will they sound good in a large room 30x40? Yes. Will they sound good in a small room? Yes. That’s they beauty of large constant coverage horns. Hope this helps.
