  1. I think I made a new friend last night. I went out to the local pub to cheer on my friend who was playing at the open mic night. A young woman had her dog there and about 10 minutes into the evening the dog came over and decided to keep me company for the rest of the night.

  8. I had a Detroit News paper route in 1968. Like any 13 year old, I loved music and listened to CKLW in Jr. High, which was a 1.5 mile walk each day. I saved money and bought a Zenith portable AM radio and a pair of Koss Brown headphose (they probably had 3" speakers in them). The radio came with a mono ear bud on a wire, so I cut the ear plug end off and wired the 1/8" mono plug to a 1/4" female adapter for the 1/4" headphone plug (wired in Mono, using the bought all this at Lafayette Electronics. Cassettes were just coming along then as a music medium. My dad told me I looked ridiculous with those things on my ears, but they kept them warm in the winter too. I may have invented the first walkman, and my friends think Sony stole my idea. LOL.

  9. We have circled back to "will it work" vs "getting the best out of them". I understand that for most people, the sound they get falls somewhere in between those two. My son tried Cornwalls in a room slightly bigger than yours and it was a no go. Even his old Forte IIIs could become a little shouty sitting so close. I think you will have two issues, one of bass bloat at certain frequencies (most likely 80-100 hz) and lack of integration from the drivers. Or at least they won't integrate as they should. You will probably get sound quality far better than a "cones in a box" design of similar size. But my vote ultimately goes to a pair of Heresys and two small subs. You would be able to use DSP to tame bass nodes, so that's a win for sure. I do truly hope you get the performance that you seek from the AL5.

  12. So you’ll be sitting about 5-6 ft. In front of them and they’ll be about 5 ft. apart. Horns don’t make very good near field monitors. Good luck…

  13. Sure hope it stays small. It's getting crazy everywhere. Sad to see imo. About 87 here in Duckburg and IF we're lucky we'll get some rain. Fronts kinda slidin a few miles north of us but we'll see. Humidity is off the charts so maybe. Then right back up there. Yup, NWS just issued a severe thunderstorm warning but it's just sunny and warm now. Catching this guy next Wednesday night. Kickin back a bit in my old age but the song applies. lol

  14. I can confirm that Roy Delgado (aka @Chief bonehead) has said many times (in person and on this forum) that "smaller rooms need bigger horns". It's possible that I may be the king of large speakers in a smaller room as I have Heritage Jubilee in a 13' x 17' room. it was Roy who encouraged me to go ahead with my plans to get the Jubilee for my smallish living room. While it's now more of a "Jubilee room" than a living room, I love my setup. So, don't let any discourage you from putting larger speakers into a smaller room if you have the space and desire to accommodate them. The issues you will have with Heresy in a small room are the exact same issues that you will have with Forte or Cornwall. You will need to control room reflections, control bass room gain, and use proper toe-in. Proper room treatment, bass room correction, and experimenting with speaker position will be the solutions in either case. The larger mid-range horn in the Cornwall will actually control directivity lower and reduce reflections. I'm of the opinion that you should get the largest speakers that you are willing to put in your room.

  15. Also so got to see Tarsiers, an endangered species of primates. Amazing little creatures, up to 15cm... superb hearing up to 91khz. Have a pic on separate phone... it will come along. They had staff who would take your phone to get close ups. We were still only about 5 feet away.

  17. Any reputable company will give links to independent acoustic lab test results somewhere on their product website. There are absorbers, diffusors and resonators. The first two are effective in helping with reverb and echo. With absorbers the general rule is the thicker they are the lower in frequency their ability to a absorb. And so the thicker ones are referred to as bass traps. In small rooms bass taming is quit important as standing waves will make places in the room have too much and others too little bass. Your room sounds fairly large but it is NOT an auditorium or concert hall and is still considered a small room. Resonators are designed to absorb a particular frequency( or small band of frequencies) to tame a specific problem whereas the panels are broadband absorbers. Absorbers work by actually absorbing sound energy and turning it into heat and not letting it reflect. Diffusors work by scattering the sound energy by turning an incident sound wave into many smaller non directional waves. I have recently applied many acoustic treatments to my listening room and wish I had done it long ago, It is vastly improved. I see @MicroMara has already pointed to my thread.

  18. For my Jubilee room I used the 2' x 4' x 2-inch thick "Hardened-Edge Acoustic Panels" from ATS Acoustics (https://www.atsacoustics.com/ATS-hardened-edge-acoustic-panels.html). These panels have no wood frame and are therefore very light weight. For the ceiling I created a 4-panel cloud. Since the panels are so light, I was able to hang them with some hooks with wall anchors and two lengths of closet pole using the Rotofast Cloud Anchors (with cable ties) that are one of the hanger options when purchasing the panels. For the walls, I used the same panels at the first reflection points on the side and rear walls that I located using the mirror method (putting a mirror against the wall, sitting at the listening position, and seeing there the reflections of the speakers were) and two on the front wall between the speakers. I also used the Rotofast Cloud Anchors to hang these as well. I simply used large picture frame hooks to hold the circle part of the cloud anchor. Unfortunately, the panels are a bit pricy. However, since I stink at wood working, it was worth it to me.

  23. Ah yes, Kelly Harmon, daughter of football star, Tom Harmon, sister of Mark Harmon on CSI, married John Z. DeLorean which made the other GM wives jealous. Gorgeous woman. All the siblings were movie star gorgeous kids. Anyhow, I photographed JJ without the morning crew and all the WRIF, WMGC, and WCSX Jocks, including Arthur Penhallow, right before he quit the RIFF, because they didn't want to pay him what he asked. But that's another story. I guaranty you that none of those 3 stations ever played even ONE Tony Bennett song! (Hey, since I'm the OP, I gotta keep it relevant!)

  28. Wow! Ok cornwalls 82, I guess the profit has spoken! My apologies if I’ve offended your vast knowledge of proper speaker/room relationship. I initially posted wondering if anyone had luck with cw4s in small room? Most of the chatter I got was slamming the heresy’s. If I had a buck every time someone gives an opinion i didn’t ask for….. spotted an article somewhere with Roy Delgado talking about big horns in small rooms. Gonna check it out. Maybe I’ll learn something cw82🙉

  31. Sharin the love in mah hood. This has GOT to be raisin eyebrows! What a jam! King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and is one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of the Blues", and is considered one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" (along with Albert King and Freddie King, none of whom are related). King performed tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing on average at more than 200 concerts per year into his 70s.[10] In 1956 alone, he appeared at 342 shows.[11] He just shines on this album. ALL him throwin it ALL at ya. IF ya can't catch a groove to this one you're prolly dead. My LS are smilin as big as I am right now after flippin to side 2. WOW! ZERO trash on this lp. It's ALL HIM killin EVERY note! A double thumbs up if you're a purist! Crank it up and let it ALL go! To make it even better Cbus sports just reported that Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh is slapped with a 4 game suspension for something! No volume so clueless. 😂 I'll just tell the cops if they show up I was just celebrating! 😎 GO BUCKS!

  32. Just popped-in to say I'm with Scott -- glad people are still building and posting. There must be a pile of threads out there for these type things by now if people want to do variations on the basic theme (ask 5 people, get 6 opinions). I think what you did is important in keeping it all accessible w/o deep-diving, Henry. There's not much of that around anymore and there are plenty of places for the other thing. This thread has a good vibe carrying enthusiasm and encouragement so you've succeeded. i've not met a "tube diyer" that hadn't at least once hacked on a console carcass to get some ear-time on something of the ilk.

  33. I see many posts in this forum about "taming the midrange". I contend that if one chooses their system wisely, especially amplification, there is no need to "tame" the midrange. Horns can be just as beguilingly smooth as any conventional driver, but with more texture and snap. I have zero harshness from my lascalas and zero interest in any equalization of any kind. And I'm not laying all the blame on SS amps, some tube amps just don't sound very good on horns either. It's all about synergy.

  38. Trust your ears, bring your amp to an audio store and compare DACs. You can spend a couple of hundred or many thousands. I am currently shopping for a new DAC and the best I've heard so far is the Pro-ject DAC box RS2 at $3000 with optional external PS. This week I am going to listen to LINN's Selekt DSM at over $4k. As a final test I'll whip out the credit card and borrow each unit for a test on my system and see how well it integrates. The RS2 sounds good, but it's been on the market for a few years and I suspect that a new version may be coming. Nice feature of the Linn is that it's upgradeable without replacement. There is a lot to consider when purchasing a DAC. How well is the DAC chip implemented, quality of components used in the construction and the power supply. I've heard good things about the Chinese brands Topping and Gustard. RME DAC-2 has good reviews and does a great job of reproducing quality recordings but it is a bit complicated to learn and I find myself having to compensate with the built in EQ for older recordings which are not of great quality. It has 20 EQ presets but I find that a bit cumbersome. The next best DAC is Chord's Qutest which really doesn't sound much different and it's a thousand more. Until someone comes up with a Quantum DAC, I think there will always be improvement in design and sound.

  39. Hey everyone! I stumbled upon this discussion and couldn't resist chiming in. For me, the coolest building in the world has to be the Mohawk Power building, too. It's got such a unique and captivating design that catches your eye right away. I love how it blends modern architecture with a touch of industrial charm. Whenever I'm in the area, I can't help but take a moment to admire its beauty. It seems to me that an elevator in such a tall building is most necessary. By the way, have you ever heard of the Hin Chong Company? They seem to provide top-notch elevator services in many countries.

  43. I would like to share an experience with you, about drinking and driving. As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd social session over the years.A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends at the Marriott Hotel and had a few too many beers and some rather nice red wine.Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before: I took a bus home.Sure enough I passed a police road block but as it was a bus, they waved it past.I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise; as I have never driven a bus before and am not sure where I got it from.

  44. The social worker from adult protective services asked the old lady if she was having trouble affording her food. The elderly lady nicely replied 'no, that she just needed to be frugal was all'. Then it dawned on the social worker that she'd been snacking from the peanut bowl on the coffee table and she thought she'd better ask before having another.......... "may I have another peanut?" The old lady replied "have as many as you like, I already sucked all the chocolate off of those ones".
