  1. Well, after a long side step to pursue my 1st Love, building Hot Rods, I am back boys and girls. Just picked up a pair of mismatched Scala beaters to turn into another pair of Plum Mahogany "La Bella's". Look forward to being back and posting my project progress. I thought about you all often and dreamt of stepping back into Scala restoration. Hi

  4. When I bought a used pair of Klipschorns I asked the previous owner why he was selling them. He told me that his wife did not like them because they did not have enough bass. Her other issue with them was that they had a bad odor about them. That was not what I was expecting him to say . . . but I just chalked it up to everyone is different? Well fast forward to when I got them home. The first thing that I did was to open the woofer bins to take a look inside. That was how I discovered two things: - why his wife thought the bass was insufficient. - where the odor was coming from. I discovered that mice had built nests inside the woofer bins. The nests were pressing up against the plywood and the bottom half of the woofer cones! And the nests were full of mouse feces, mouse urine and dry dog food!! I was able to get rid of the odor by removing the top sections and leaving the bass bins (sans woofers) outdoor in the hot sun for a couple of weeks after lightly sanding the interior plywood, vacuuming thoroughly, and scrubbing the bass bins with Clorox and lots of clean water. Then I replaced both woofers with new ones and the bass has been more than satisfactory.

  5. I know I don’t own horns at the moment. But I just finished installing quite a bit of room treatment. The improvement is very dramatic. I knew there would be improvements, but wasn’t prepared for what I’m hearing. There are more diffusers on the side walls not pictured.

  6. In the Klipsch listening room the only absorption are panels at the front and back of the room in the center and nothing behind the speakers. I assume to prevent direct "slap" from front to back. Otherwise it is a slanted ceiling and curved panels on the side walls. Fantastic wide open sound. When I'm in there I want for nothing. By comparison my room is over damped. I would prefer a livelier room but it is a basement with open insulation on the ceiling. I have absorbers behind the speakers and some on the front and back walls. Probably too much. Diffusion panels on the side walls and first reflection positions. I would be wary of over damping. I have a system in my garage built from leftover components adding up to peanuts and when the garage door is open there is a good argument that this is pretty darn good sound. No room treatments except lawn mower, Harley, and a bunch of tools and equipment. Sometimes less can be more. Measurements and a good EQ can help a lot.

  7. Hello all, Yes, I am in my purging mode. Up for your consideration is a highly upgraded pair of Quartets. Crites x-over ($325), Crites titanium tweeters ($82), Extra cabinet bracing between the woofer and mid, upgraded woofers, refinished cabinets in a beautiful rich finish! All active drivers are in perfect condition. The passives are in very good condition. Both grills are in excellent shape, they have been washed and have their badges. These have been adult owned, cared for and listened to in a pet and smoke free home. I have well over $600 in upgrades into these. If you're on the forum, you know the value of these. Audition at time of purchase to verify they work flawlessly. Included is a bourbon tasting if you so desire. Asking $750 Included is a bourbon tasting if you so desire while auditioning these! 8. I'm considering moving from tube amps and external tube dac for a more simple solution such as a Digital AMP that takes only digital spif input(no analog inputs). Peachtree Gan1 for example. In order to double as hifi/home theater, i would need a streamer with HDMI video connection to use my tv streaming. There are plenty of options including HiFi Rose. Streamers have analog inputs as well as outputs. I was curious if i wanted to keep some tube sound, would my transformer coupled tube preamp w/ tvc work outputting into one of the Streamers analog inputs while digitally outputting spdif out to the digital power amp? Or i would only be able to set the streamer to digital out and not be able to simultaneously use the input to get tube benefits?

  14. I have had success with baking soda and water. Use a rather thick solution and wipe/rinse thoroughly. Something they use for cars are odor bombs, but you’d need an enclosed space to do it. https://biobombs.com/collections/all/products/vehicle-deodorization-kit

  15. I would experiment with absorption, absorption is an easy place to start . You can use common inexpensive materials for experimental or for permanent placement .Listening rooms provide an infinite number of reflective pathways to the listener and as Schu said , “ it’s a matter of personal preference “ as to how much absorption vs reflection suites your taste . As you reduce reflection , direct sound increases , and spacial information may become less confused , ( better imaging) but at what cost to sound quality ?. Covering an entire wall or carpeting a floor will add a meaningful percentage of sound absorption to a room , covered floors hinder many pathways of reflective sound , which can be good. From my experience trying to predict the exact location of objectionable reflections , and then trying to control them ad hoc is difficult or impossible to accomplish . Although points of first reflection should be considered .I like a different approach, which is to assess the entire room for liveliness and then deaden the room to satisfaction if necessary.

  17. You should consider hiring a professional theater audio technician to do an analysis of your needs. In my opinion, for a venue of that size, you would need a pair of Klipschorns or Jubilees! And, even with those, you will need far more power than a little SET can provide. Maynard

  18. Thanks for the response to wayneair's question. I just picked up a pair of the same type. Both are HBR, only one has a tag with the number 8537236. But both have that same mix of speakers K-22 woofer, K-33 mids, K-77 tweeter, and E-2 crossovers. They are in pretty good shape cosmetically, but I want to check everything out before I try them since they cost me $400.

  19. Yes, you can put them on stands. Yes, it will adversely affect bass, as they won't be directly coupled to the floor. (Linkwitz transform type bass eq fixes it right up.)

  20. After half a year of "Klipsch zero information policy" and my extremely bad experience with the support, I have now found an old firmware and just tried to install it via usb-stick. So what can I say? The downgrade to version 5.8.0 (the one with the 3 bass modes) worked like a charm. For me, every misbehavior has disappeared. The loud popping noises are gone and the volume knob can be used again. In addition, the speakers now automatically switch inputs again. I mean, if someone is listening via Bluetooth and then turns on the TV, they now switch to HDMI automatically again. That makes so much more sense than keeping the Bluetooth channel. Sure, the EQ function is gone as well, but I just can't handle another "Whoops!". It looks like we cannot communicate with your Fives...". Not to mention that I was the only one in our house who dealt with this insane software anyway. I've now happily uninstalled the app and I' m enjoying the speakers again as I did on day one. Case closed 🥲 The Fives 5.8.0.zip

  21. Mc250 and KG's do sound wonderful together.

  22. If it's the mc-250 at AK in Barter town, then 800 seems reasonable without shipping. It is absolutely mint and he lists the work done and who did it that indicates it is running fine. So to the above post, it is in the 650 range for cosmetics and the 200-ish for the internal work done already. It is a beauty and I love my mc-250, I may buy other amps, but I'll be hard pressed to sell mine. ^ what he said
    1 point
  23. While I love my mc250, $800 is a high price (unless it has been serviced, recapped and has mint chrome) I'd say $475-650 is the fair market price depending on condition (chassis rust). Figure 200-ish for a service and recap. FYI Dewick's current wait time is pretty long.

  25. Gaaah... The Wave Radio My brother in law is aware that I am into audio and finds it nessesary to talk about his goddamn wave radio to me at every family meeting. He tells me how convenient it is to bluetooth stream mp3's to it from his iphone and how wonderful it sounds.. The only thing that I can say to him is, 'yeah, must be great' I don't have the heart to tell him his wave radio is a $500 pos. He thinks its great, I'm not one to crap on someone's pride and joy.

  26. Ahh yes, 'The Paradox Of Chioce' A hyper-accelerated consumer culture has people (mainly 30-40 yr olds) buying things or subscribing to services (electronic gadgets, kitchen tools, phone apps and etc) and then trying to figure how to integrate them into their lives. This 'gadgetization' has an infantilizing effect on many grown adults. It's quite funny/sad. If you've ever purchased a 'melon spoon', I'm talking about you. Back on topic: 'Kids' these days only know electroincs that you replace every 2-5 years. Making a long term investment into a piece of audio gear that could last a lifetime is silly nonsense to someone who replaces their phone and game console every 2 years (or less).

  27. I would. Just keep applying it until it gets darker. Wait a day in between coats.

  28. Tung oil is great and I use it on everything. It gives such a rich, natural and HARD finish. That said, stain will not penetrate the tung oil. The oil is the sealant. The stain will just sit on the tung oil and eventually will rub off with everything that touches it. Removing tung oil is a mechanical process (sanding/steel wool with mineral spirits), there is no 'stripper' for oil finishes (that works). If you were looking to go darker with your existing finish; I believe there are tinted Tung oils. Additional coats will darken your piece. Good luck.

  29. Hello All, Purchased (another) set of H3's second hand that dont have badges, the speakers feel naked: I'm looking for a pair of the PWK 'pie' style emblem/badges. OEM or reproduction. They do not have to be 'correct' for the heresy3, they can be pretty much any pie style badge. Thanks!! James

  31. French press. I never thought much of the lowly contraption until we lost power and had to give this cave man technology a try. I haven't used the Keurig since. French press makes the smoothest and strongest coffee that I've ever enjoyed. Nothing fancy or European, it's a $20 Mr Coffee brand. Amazing. Give it a try people! As for cillis: The Thai prik kee noo pepper is fantastic. Not a super hot, very flavorful indeed.

  32. Sprags: Do you feel that building a speaker that is currently in production is cost effective? My inclination is that it would not be. If you want to DIY a speaker: I would use a readily available and tested plan for a something special or unique that you can't just go out an buy in a store. For example; build a Pi Speaker, Treols Graesens JBL L100 clone, or a Crites Cornscala kit, etc If you want any of those, you have to build 'em! /that's my 2 cents. Regardless of that, best of luck on the project!

  34. I support the previously stated ' you have to hear them both live and not on youtube'. You cannot capture the essence on a low quality you tube recording. Not sure how far the OP is looking to travel to do his live compare-o; I am in NJ (25 miles from the PA boarder) and my setups are in my signature if you are interested to hear tubes and solid side by side. My crystal ball says that you will end up with a tube amp soon if not already! It happens to everyone.

  40. Hello. I'm trying to find surround speakers that match my KLF-30 and KLF-C7 speakers. Can anyone suggest rear surrounds? I'd prefer to stay in the Klipsch line, and I really the idea of those "dispersion" speakers that send sound around in a radius. If I sound like a newbie, it's because I am. I really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Brian

  41. Anyone familiar with the HK AVR-500 receiver? I have had it about 6 months, and like it, but I'm no audio expert. I'm wondering how it ranks with all the receivers out there. It's not a $3000 receiver, so I don't expect it to the the absolute best, but I'm hoping it's considered one of the better receiver. The sound, from a non-audiophile perspective, sounds very good. In addition, what are the opinions about how it sounds with the KLF-30 and KLF-C7 speakers? I think it's great, but I'm thinking it may be a little underpowered for these monster speakers. Thanks for any and all info... -Brian

  42. I am posting this for a friend... he has the same center I have (KLF-C7), and apparently got a real deal on the JBL N-38 fronts. He wants to know if he should buy the JBLs--he swears it's such a deal that he hates to turn it down. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks, Brian

  43. That's great to hear, Craig. It sure seems to sound good to me, and I've got a friend that's sort of an "audio guy" and he says it's great as well. I just wanted to see how others felt about it, especially since you guys are pretty experienced in the audio area. Thanks, Brian

  44. To be honest, I can't imagine springing for more KLF-30 towers. So expensive! I love 'em up front, but for something that only has occasional sound like the rears I want to get by with something less expensive. I'm trying to locate the S6 surrounds, but they're few and far between. Klipsch support recommended the Reference line of speakers for my surrounds. I think the model was something like RF3-II and RF-7 (might be a letter off, but you guys will probably know what model I'm talking about.)
