  1. Dark Side of the Moon 50th clear vinyl delivered today. Ordered it months ago. 2 albums. Can only play one side. Sound quality is top notch! Much better than my late 70s MFSL. And the clear vinyl with the silk screen printing looks mesmerizing on my Ortofon cork mat!! 😆

  11. Typically horn flare rates (areas)are described by the term "cut-off" frequency aka "Fc"; at freques below this this the horn just about stops working. You put Fc into the exponential equation however, PWK often used the term "lamedh" (I'll use "Ld") to describe the horn area expansion; It is the lengh of travel down the horn in which the area doubles (or halves). Therefor the expansion works like animals / bacterium doubling every time period. If my math is correct, the cuttoff wavelength (I'll call it "Lc) is 18.1 times the length to double. We can examine the LaScala's two paths (combined) and notice the area at the throat is 0.5 ft^2; then the paths go across the back to the interior corners where the area is 1 ft^2; then toward the front for a foot to where the area is 2 ft^2; then another foot to the mouth where the combined area is 4 ft^2. Therefore we see the Ld is 1 foot or 12 inches. The Lc is thus 18.1 * 12 and we dived the velocity of sound 15,00 in/sec by that wavelength to get an Fc of 62 Hz. We can check the PWK article on the K400 horn and notice that the length to double is given as 2.75 inches. The math like the above shows that it's Fc is 270 Hz. PWK was really getting it to go as low as possible to where the bass bin on the Khorn is running out of steam! Good night all, WMcD

  13. It is instructive to look at US Patent 4,210,which concers the big MCM bass horn woofer. The Length to double area is 23.3 inches which gives an Fc of 31.95 Hz. You can find the document at USPTO.GOV or Google Patents. There is in that patent document some design information. And Klipsch and Gillim use the 18.1 figure (so I was correct!) Many thanks toJames and also to John A for helping me through this stroke time. WMcD

  30. @Abomb Take it easy on me I didn't know it was Sunday til 2PM. I wondered WHY my lil meds tray that said Saturday was empty. So I took Sunday's just to be safe cause I thought I remembered taking them yesterday. The boys moved Jam Night from Friday night to Saturday night THAT started all of this cause it's always on Friday. One of the guys in the band called me about 2 and asked if I wanted to head to Columbus with them to see Springsteen. He and his wife had an xtra ticket. Guess her sister was gonna go w/her hubby and he bailed. I said well that's tomorrow night. He started laffin and told me it was Sunday. Yea, ok... @JohnJ knows the kinda crap that happens on jam night. Dazed and confused. Sometimes I really think I need a "Medic Alert" bracelet! 😂

  33. Sound quality improved today! 80% wool at a much better price than 100% would have been. 1/4" pad with 1" rug on top, will cut some of the pad scraps to level the 301s out again. So funny to think what 301 used to signify in a speaker to me when I was 20 something😂

  34. The benefit is called "headroom". Any piece of music will vary in amplitude. Those intermittent, briefly louder instances are called "peaks", and require more power from the amplifier. So if your amp is playing at level "X" one of those peaks will come along and demand more of the amp's power to reproduce the louder signal. If the amp maxes out trying to faithfully reproduce that brief peak it will "clip", which means if you looked at the waveform on an oscilloscope it would look like an undulating wave but the tops and the bottoms of the wave will be flat. These flat portions indicate the amp is operating beyond its limits, which can damage the amp. If an amp has headroom, it has more power than is needed to reproduce those peaks. Some people consider headroom the ability to briefly generate considerably more power than its continuous output rating. Fair enough. Whether your amp has plenty of reserve power to drive your speakers or merely has the headroom to briefly reproduce those peaks the result is the same. Conversely, most speakers are rated in "Continuous" watts. Which means they can tolerate some peaks beyond that continuous rating as long as the amp has enough headroom to reproduce the wave faithfully. If the amp clips even if its output rating is below the continuous wattage rating of your speakers, when the amp generates that flat section described above, it is sending a DC voltage to your speakers. This is bad and if long enough in time can damage your speakers. The solution is to keep the volume down to a point where you don't hear distortion, even on those intermittent peaks. As long as you don't hear anything bad, you're not pushing your amp or speakers beyond their limits and don't risk damage to one or both.

  35. Well I was shocked yet not shocked when I heard of Richard Betts death from cancer earlier today. That guy was something else. He played anything handed to him and his fretwork was amazing. Quiet yet always came up with something funny if you knew that grin of his. Ramblin Man? He flat nailed it everytime I ever saw him play it. It was just the way he rolled like the rest of the guys. Southern rock? The Allman Brothers were the words that rolled off so many tongues. It's just another sad day. Ugh Forrest Richard Betts (December 12, 1943 – April 18, 2024) was an American guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer best known as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band. Early in his career, he collaborated with Duane Allman,[1] introducing melodic twin guitar harmony and counterpoint which "rewrote the rules for how two rock guitarists can work together, completely scrapping the traditional rhythm/lead roles to stand toe to toe".[2] Following Allman's death in 1971, Betts assumed sole lead guitar duties during the peak of the group's commercial success in the mid-1970s. Betts was the writer and singer on the Allmans' hit single "Ramblin' Man". He also gained renown for composing instrumentals, with one appearing on most of the group's albums, including "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Jessica" (which was later used as the theme to Top Gear). The band went through a hiatus in the late 1970s, during which time Betts, like many of the other band members, pursued a solo career and side projects under such names as Great Southern and The Dickey Betts Band. The Allman Brothers reformed in 1979, with Dan Toler taking the second guitar role alongside Betts. In 1982, they broke up a second time, during which time Betts formed the group Betts, Hall, Leavell and Trucks, which lasted until 1984. A third reformation occurred in 1989, with Warren Haynes now joining Betts on guitar. After Betts was ousted from the band in 2000 over a conflict regarding his continued drug and alcohol use; he never played with them again nor appeared with other former band members for reunions or side projects. With the death of Betts in April 2024, Jaimoe is the last living founder of the Allman Brothers Band. He was inducted with the band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995[3] and also won a best rock performance Grammy Award with the band for "Jessica" in 1996.[4] Betts was ranked No. 58 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list in 2003, and No. 61 on the list published in 2011. His first solo lp from 1974 went down and cranked big time this afternoon. Ya think he couldn't do it all? Riiiiight, not a big hit but one of my favs. Yea, the Brothers chimed in on that one just about every time they played Cleveland. Here ya go @JohnJ. Put your feet up. Here's the full lp. The Brothers and "Ramblin Man?" Check out his intro to the first song on this lp. God's speed brother! RIP!

  39. Unused power is just that, unused, no magic pixie dust in it. I can say without hesitation 8 watts is plenty of power for me and clipping is not a problem. Much more power has been tried and found not to be needed at my less than live concert listening levels. More power to you if that's your desire, but I'm not going to tell someone else they need more power and that it's going to transform their system. If they are happy with what they have and hear no signs of clipping all is good, no sense in losing sleep. Many have gone down in quantity and up in quality and experienced worthwhile improvements.

  40. In cycling related news: The fork on the Cannondale Prophet Lefty that I bought a while back was leaking oil. Unfortunately Cannondale has changed hands 2+ times since the bike was built and no longer services old Lefty forks. Fortunately there's a company in New York, Mendon Cyclesmiths, that services older Cannondale Lefty and HeadShok forks. I sent the fork off to them and it should be arriving today. I'm really looking forward to riding it as much as possible now that the weather is getting nicer. I didn't want to ride it too much with the fork leaking oil because these forks brand new are $1,000+ and I only paid $300 for the bike. Surprisingly, they only charge $85 for rebuiliding the fork!

  41. Seriously? I can honestly tell the difference. Did a lil bit of an A/B test yesterday and there's a vast difference just like I knew there would be. The compression game sucks for sure. It does fill a void though with one's level of worthlessness. 😂

  42. Switching amps or power supply can result in a sonic difference. For instance with a tube switching from triode mode to ultralinear will be perceived immediately due to the increase power. Bass control is easier with SS gear compared to tube gear. This warmth or sterile terminology is not the best wording. Some tube amps appear more warm due to distortion for the most part and suit high sensitivity speakers. SS, better control of all frequencies for the most part. I don't compare my SS gear to the tube gear. I like class A, class A/B, Digital and tube gear. One is not better than the other, it's the user's implementation toward their goals.

Doesn't eat much either. He'll surface. Some of the other guys will step up I'm sure. I'm the dumb red-headed step brother in the gaggle and just stir the pot a lot. Waits... I KNOW the comments are coming! Ruthless bunch in here! 😂
