  1. If you want a lot more low freq. - then save up for a better sub. You can get a decent Velodyne for around $600-700. You could always upgrade mains to something with more bass - I have RF-7s and they rock the house so well during exploisions in movies or when there is a helicopter scene - it feels like it's right outside the house. If you can find a good deal on KLF-30s - try to those guys...
  2. Just turn of HDMI-CEC (Anynet or whatever they call it on your brand of TV/Player) It's a good feature for people who actually intend to watch DVD when when insert a DVD disk
  3. Skip RW-10D, i had one and it's not really a great sub. Now if you could get RSW-10D -that would be pretty good
  4. RF-62s - awesome, don't touch them. The only reason to move them anywhere is if you get RF82/83s or RF7s. Otherwise - just use them as is. RF-7s have a lot more punch, the bass is so good, i don't even want a subwoofer. Music sounds great and movies are like in a theater with them. I've used RF-62s for my mains and now will be selling them since they've been in garage ever since I've upgraded to 7s. To say even more - a pair of RF-7s and a good center (like RC-7 or RC-64) and you've got a killer sounding system without the whole 5.1 or 7.1 mess.
  5. Keep the ones that sound better. I don't understand why you would keep something that sound inferior, heresy's or not.
  6. See if you can get something decent from craigslist. I personally would get a pair or reference series bookshelves - RB-3 or RB-5s. They are awesome speakers that will play very well with modern or vintage amps and they can be moved to rear/surrounds if you move to larger speakers in the future. These particular models can also be had for little money - from $100 for a pair if you are lucky. You could also try to get KG series, but they are bigger and may not fit in a small room.
  7. Not sure about the kit, but i don't see why you can't make a custom one. Should be easy if you have some basic measuring/cutting skills.
  8. This doesn't need veneer on top - just needs some stain or clear coat. Looking good so far - keep us updated.
  9. The answer depends on how hot your unit gets under use. My friend has a Yamaha in almost completely enclosed spac - barely worm. I run Denon which sits open just like yours - barely worm. On the other hand an Onkyo with 1/2 inch of space on top and other sides open may get so hot - you could cook on it.
  10. Ah, yes. The one trully horrible movie with one of the best sound tracks released in recent years. I played it on my 3 channel setup with RF-7 fronts and was constantly checking if I had a sub or more speakers in the room. The soundtrack is really good in this movie.
  11. Honestly I'm not sure having to centers would be an improvement.Instead of going for 2 medium/low quality centers - try to see which of the refence will fit in your new setup. You want your center as big as you can fit.
  12. Happens all the time. About 9 month ago an original owner was selling La Scallas for $350. Because of the amount of calls, he figured out that the speakers were worth more, so he sent everyone who contacted him an e-mail asking to provide him best offer, keeping in mind that someone else told him the speakers were worth $1,5-$2K.
  13. Yes - that an Official Klipsch image taken back in the day. You can find it in Klipsch's Flickr stream that Amy maintains.
  14. The spec and price is right, but Onkyo's do have reliability issues. In general they run very hot compared to other brands, and this particular model does have quite a few reports of it dieing very quickly. For $400 you can find a unit that will work great for years, but may not have the THX2 certification or have fewer watts per channel. For under $400 you can buy a Denon 1910 (if you want new) http://www.6ave.com/Shop/product.aspx?sku=DENAVR1910 Or open box Pioneer Elite model with THX for slighly more http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/538319191/pioneer-vsx03txh I would stay away from that particular Onkyo model though.
  15. As far decore - there is nothing i can match them with. We are in the process of remodeling our home, so walls/floor/furniture are likely to change in color and texture. At this point I'm seriously considering either leaving raw birch and giving it a few layers of clear Poly or trying to give it brown with a hint of red (peacan/walnut) type of coat. The cabinets are fully clean form the old poly/clear coat and are pretty white right now. But having just 2 choices instead of 3-4 is just as tough for me.
  16. Yes -that would actually work. In that case i would highly recommend getting a thick rectengular piece of plywood, putting some synthetic paddign and then wrapping it with rough cloth (similar to the ones used for old speaker grills). That mount the TV/Cable mount on it. That way you could add a nice decorative piece and provide for a solid mount support. But then again - I always have ideas that even my wife doesn't want me to even attempt. Not for the lack of skills, but because it always takes longer than I plan for originally.
  17. It's not that hard really. if you can get to the stud - it's verystreight forward. if not - you may want to put a horizontal block behind the wall and attach it to the studs. Then close the wall and bolt to the block.
  18. It's actually not such as crazy idea - WHITE. But i would go even further and make them HIGH GLOSS white. I wanted to do that on some speakers for my wife (either RF-7s or Heresey)
  19. Exactly - Monoprice! This set will run you about $60
  20. You should also consider where you will be buying them - as the larger/heavier the speaker - the more it will cost to ship them. Also for small room you should consider bookshelfs like the RB81 paired with RSW-10D. This will give you plenty of loud, clear sound and won't look out of place in a small room. Udachi s poiskom!
  21. Was Raw birch actually completely unreated birth face plywood? Or did it have clear coat of some sort, poly, oil, etc?
  22. I saw these too, but they are were about 10 hours away and I'm not driving that far even for cheap La Scalas. Anyway, here is what I would do: 1 - strip black paint with some sort of chemical/alcahol product 2 - rebuild edges and corners 3 - If you know you will be keeping these forever - get some veneer and make them super pretty. If you plan on selling them and just want to play around - paint them or stain them as is. If i had room and these speakers, i would probably make them gloss-white to make my wife happy (she likes furniture [H] )
  23. Hey all, Friend got an old pair of heritage speakers in raw birch. As i understand they came "raw" (no stain, no lacquer, no wax/oil) form the factory. But they are clearly coated with lacquer/clear coat. The cabinets are not in a bad shape, but they do have a few scratches here and there typical for speakers that are more than 30 years old. So my question is - is it better to: 1- maintain the original condition even with light scratches in the finish/wood 2 - refinish them with the same stain/lacquer 3 - refinish in exotic stain And by "better" i mean for them not to loose value since all the parts are original and they are single owner pair.
  24. I've got the same mounts - awesome stuff. Just make sure you go into a stud/brick/concrete and not just drywall
