  2. The entire crossover was replaced in these ones. It had the "E" type in it all spanking new by the looks of it. At first it was weird had a dip in the low midrange but kind of grew on me in time. A recessed kind a scooped sound. I now reversed the polarity of the midrange and squaker so it's a "D" type crossover. It got rid of the top end zing I liked so much at first with these old tweeters. Made the midrange more open though and a lot more forward. I turned my bass tone knob up a hair and things seem better, but I would like to hear a "C" now. I'm thinking of converting them to that. I guess the "E", and "D" adds about 3 decibel boost to the mid and treble. So that would make it top heavy I'd imagine with these older lower output woofer. Is yours a pretty balanced sound?
  3. Ok thats what I did to make it a D crossover what you said changed them on the "front" side. But to make this a C would I keep them all in phase or out? I started to get used to that "scooped" E sound. Today I turned on the tone knobs. Slightly boosted the high and bass. Not to shabby now I did it really to see if I could come close to what the C might sound like. Of course the whole woofer would be more in line with the midrange and highs. So it would probably be even better sounding.
  4. You sure your not thinking Old English Scratch Cover? The Oil does this too?
  5. Is this good to keep the older oil finished veneer Heritage speakers conditioned?
  6. I'm curious what crossover networks people like in their Heresy for the different models and why. I'm experimenting a little with my older 700 model ( early 70's). Tried the E now D need to try the C I believe that was the original to my year around 72.
  7. Thanks for the heads up. I'm a total newb on this just jumping right in. I see the two schematics. So switch the C2 to 1.0uf? I can't see after the 1.0 looks scribbly. Then taps I see mid 6 goes to T2A 1, and Tweeter 8 goes to T2A 2. Now because this an E crossover would I still keep the mid and tweeter reversed polarity? After comparing the E with the D looks like it wouldn't be reversed. I think I get that part. Looks likes tweeter8 Runs through a cap first then run the cap to T2A 2 tap. Also judging from the caps Crites is selling 200VDC is a safe bet.
  8. Thanks Bill that might do the trick. I was thinking D was original with these from the earlier post, but even if it were that C is a tempting solution. I love these tweeters , but that squawker about take your head off at times. Some recordings are great. The other way I thought it was a bit picky with recordings now it's even more so. Also had a more scooped sound less midrange, but real nice highs. Appreciate the input. Don't see much info on the C crossover in the search field or the internet.
  9. I did it I do hear a difference in sound now. Seems slightly more forward in the midrange now. Less zing in the highs which I used to like ( still do). Not sure how I feel about it yet. I will give it listen for awhile see how I adjust. Midrange seems slightly wider but the highs kind of lost their presence more tamed maybe. Edit: More listening thinking more harsher forward mids. II's sound lush compared to this maybe there was reasoning behind the other wiring tame the midrange a bit. Seems like it added more detail to bass lines which I was hopping for just not the excessive midrange push. Almost wish I never heard them Ignorance is bliss in my case contentment. I'll give it more time.
  10. Indeed. I've attached the original unedited versions for the curious. I love playing around in Photoshop. I'm no pro by a long shot, but it is fun to mess with. originals.jpg Nice thanks for doing that. The originals have a nice look to them as well. Cool vibe great tone.
  11. Very nice! I want a Canon someday and your skill. That's been post processed I'd imagine? Thats a skill in its self I bet. I've only tinkered with simple things like contrast, sharpener. I just got iPhoto at the moment.
  12. you play the axe wheelman? Just a little nothing serious.
  13. I don't have any "great" photos but this looks fun. .
  14. Would that work for one preamp use? Like a HT receiver already using the pre outs to an external SS amp for HT. Then some how run a tube amp would be nice too using the same HT preamp. Welcome Scottlowe58 hope I'm not intruding I was wondering the same thing, but my situation maybe a little different. The SPK-1 or something that switches between the amps and speaker pair is a must. You would also need a source selector for between the preamp and the amps. The Niles AVS-2 would work. Last thing. You need a 12VDC power source 300mA minimum, but preferably a bit more. When power is applied on the SPK-1 and the AVS-2, the "switched" is active on both units, otherwise they cruise along in "default". If you want to have the "switched" device powered on and off (I would recommend the tube amp for this one), you can add a Niles AC-3 and plug the tube amp into one of the switched outlets. Thanks maybe if I went full out and got another preamp, or a vintage tube receiver I could just use the spk-1. Not sure about all the switched outlet things. I wanted to research it a bit before I went that route. I like using a subwoofer as well so I still might stick with the HTreceiver as a preamp.

  16. Yeah I understand that. I was in the same boat at one time I decided on better sound ( to my ears and budget) over convenience. Some things I do need though like second room sound, DTS, good bass management, pre outs. It can be tough to get the right sound once your used to it a certain way. I don't use any video switching now. I probably would though if I could. My Sony tv ruined it for me it has a weird delay in input selections. So now my programable remote can't do it's job. Oh well not gonna get a new tv for awhile wasn't expecting that little quirk. Next time around that is a feature I will look into on a tv set. Good luck sorry I wasn't any help. Maybe you could boost it with an eq or something so you get the sense that its pushing more bass. But judging from the back of your receiver you would have to give up HDMI to do that. I run a sub with my speakers set to large all the time. I like it that way thats where good bass management comes in. Make sure your speaker levels are matched as well for surround. I doubt by default they would be lower than normal, but its good to check the test tones get them even for a nice surround effect. Also I noticed from your manual that you have a source level function maybe you could set that higher to give you a sense of a hotter sounding amp. Something to fiddle with but check to see its not in the minus range anyways. Make sure D.Comp is off for more dynamic range. Also set DRC OFF. Ok I see you have tone which is nice you can add some more bass or treble if you desire. Turn that on select to your liking. If needed set the levels first and make sure you are getting all the dynamic range in the soundtrack. I don't see much on bass management my computer is acting up tonight.
  17. Can you go back to the Sony? Might be just better for your liking.
  18. So during high inflation hard goods won't go up, because no one can afford it?
  19. Thanks Bill I'll have to try this out.
  20. Thanks Bill. I will look into this it seems almost like a scooped sound but dipped in the low midrange maybe mid upper bass. So reverse polarity on both midrange and tweeter to be clear on the crossover board? Just making sure because from your description it almost sounds like its just the midrange that needs reversed to be like the D.
  21. Could I just slap a pair of Heresy II woofers in the 700's and have what I thing would be the best of both worlds? Or is there a better crossover to get more low mid punch without altering the highs?
  22. Thanks for the suggestion that's a good idea. That could be the reason its leaner in the low mids. I do like the open highs of the older ones though. Funny how they seem like they have more extended range because of the crossover, or speaker design. They actually opened up my ears now I feel like I'm missing some highs, and upper mid presence in the II's. I don't think I would be able to swap out the speakers unless I did the trade. Might be a risk unless I am for certain I want them. Probably the hardest descision I ever had to make audio related. I like them both so much. I tried to compensate using tone knobs on my receiver, but that didn't come close to the H-700 sound. I also hear a certain character from the old midrange driver on clean electric blues guitar I just don't hear on the II's. Hard to explain that one but I do like it. Something I actually listen for in real old guitar amps, and vintage guitar speakers. I'm considering fiddling with my subwoofer settings. The last thing I want to do it's been set a certain way for years because once I start it doesn't end any time soon.
