  1. DrWho and I just had some pancakes a little while ago, and we're hangin' out waiting on folks to arrive...
  2. So, I went to home depot over lunch and they didn't have the 2" blue foam I was looking for. I'll have to trek around a bit but I had decided to give it a whirl and see how they look. I'll have to take another crack at interpreting what RPlusD is telling me.
  3. As some people on this forum know, I'm always up for a heated confrontational argument. I've gotten into it big-time with some stereo arse-whipes around here. If I can quote too many facts or say something they don't understand I usually get the "Well, you're just showing how inexperienced you are" talk; yeah, I still get carded for booze and these guys are not going to let some "young" punk tell them what's what. Yeah, I'm about to turn 31 but I can tell when someone thinks I'm 19. My response on my way out is something like "Your supporting evidence is called 'argument from authority' and is a logical fallacy you wouldn't get away with in a high school debate club. But since YOU brought your age up relative to mine, I'd say the fact that you are so old and experienced also means you're hearing is rolling off terribly and you should really trust my opinion since I can hear and you can't" There's a particular place on Sunset in Waukesha (ole boomac knows it) that I'm not welcome in anymore... I doubt Dope from Hope would sway guys like this, since Dope contains "facts" and that ain't where these folks draw their inferences.
  4. The folks who said YES should have just gotten my Address and Phone # in a PM. Anyone else??? See you all around 1PM on Saturday!
  5. Yeah, There is clearly still an amazing level of horn bias out there. I take comfort that it seems to come not from engineers but dooshbag HiFi shop elitists.
  6. I don't have the links handy, but both Dolby and DTS offer guidance on their websites for where to put things. Hypothetically it is best to cross reference Dolby, DTS, and the THX guidelines, since supposedly these are the parameters the engineers should have in mind when mixing the soundtracks. When I was planning my room, I recall finding the "2' above the ear" and so forth on the DTS site, and I'm happy with the results.
  7. So, it seems that there is more than a grain of skepticism regarding using blue foam to make a diffusor? Not worth a $60 experiment? It seems the RPG stuff is grounded in good science, but I could buy another set of speakers for what it'd take to buy their products!
  8. Updated SWL to be IN. It looks like, if anyone is interested, I'll have the High Def version of Beowulf on Saturday night, which supposedly has a 5-star high def soundtrack.
  9. I've only barely played other soul calibur games, but so far I really like this one. Darth vader is fun!
  10. All right folks, it's THIS saturday! Try to get yourself out of Maybe status into Yes or No land, and I'll PM people directions and phone # on Thursday!
  11. I just picked this up for the PS3. Anyone else playing it?
  12. They haven't been out anywhere near enough time for 100+ hours, not in the states. I was the first US customer to take delivery of the P-39F (mostly meant for Europe) as far as I know. Sorry but I think you are right in terms of patience. I have pictures and zoom applications detailing the unboxing on www.klipschcorner.com and it'll be at least another week of living with them before I can start writing a serious review. I'm still working on positioning after a week, 30+ albums/symphonies, about 4 movies, and some video games.
  13. I REALLY like horror movies, have since I was a wee lad, but this one was only "eh" as far as I'm concerned. I watched the unrated version on blu-ray and were it not for the wine we were drinking I'm not sure I would have even given it 2 stars []
  14. You said "comments?" There's a review, a web site, 2 dedicated photo zooming applications, several threads, and the comments of sevearl forum members. What sort of meat where you looking for?
  15. DTLongo: I think my comments are being taken out of context: My recording of Beethoven's 9th is not very good, and I instantly found that these speakers are very detailed and less forgiving of a bad recording than the speakers they replaced. My Steely Dan recordings ARE very good and so of course blew me away. My Paganini, The Planets, Grieg, Einhorn, and others ARE good, and also blow me away. Its a lot of fun to feel the air hitting your pants legs when Mars arrives [] I think I have mentioned that I have done a demo of the 60th anniversery K-horns vs. the P-39F in the same room with the same electronics, same music. The demo material was some of Mark Kaufman's stuff (not classical), "Voices of Light" (baroque-style, vocals, super nice), Pagannini "21 caprici", Tori Amos, Soundgarden, Stevie Ray Vaughn. I am really in the "still building my collection" phase of classical appreciation, but I felt the P-39F was worth the extra $$ given the few pieces I listened to. I do find that I need to turn it up louder due to the sensitivity difference, but my amps are 300wpc into 4ohms so that's OK.
  16. Very interesting gilbertma, they look cool too. I wonder what a S/N ratio of "> 100db" means. This is an incredibly important spec to me, my aragon amp is basicly silent.
  17. I downloaded the two things I saw posted, and I'll be listening myself very soon. We'll make it part of the official curriculum.
  18. When: Saturday August 9th beginning at 1pm Where: Damon's house in Hartford, WI. Directions will be emailed to attendees next week. What: Listen to the Palladium P-39F! Bring gear to try. Agenda: (still rough at this point) 1pm: begin listening 5pm: Grill brats & sweet corn 8pm: movie 1am: party's over [|-)] Who'll be there? Damon DrWho j-malotky SET12 SWL Boomac Two dudes from the Audioholics forum (late afternoon) Randy (Picking up my CWs) Classic240Z (maybe) What will be there: 5 channel Class D amp - 1000asp IcePower modules (maybe) JL Audio F112 (maybe) Some things to keep in mind: If more than, say, 12 people come, it could get very crowded! We'll have to make sure everyone gets a chance to sit in the sweet spot, switch gear, etc. I will be providing Brats and Sweet corn but I could use some help with beverages! I can put DrWho up overnight but that's probably about it! At some point guests will have skeedaddle. [] Please post here in this thread if I should change your status to maybe/yes/no Please post here in this thread if you plan on bringing any kind of gear so people can see what they're in for. {Can this post be made sticky for a week?}
  19. Downloading. I'll try CD-ifying this and taking a listen.
  20. The automatic translation is freakin hilarious: http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.areadvd.de%2Fhardware%2F2008%2Fklipsch_palladium.shtml&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sl=de&tl=en
  21. John, would you say then that if an amp shows a higher THD rating for a 4ohm load, that the amp is really "optimized" for 8ohm and some less efficient thing is going on for 4ohm? Is it worth looking into a new amp over?
  22. Just a couple of comments on Blu-Ray Larry: Despite when these things were filmed or recorded, there's a 99.9% chance that they were recorded on film and tape. The film and tape then goes through a painstaking encoding and mastering process to create the digital copies. There's maybe 9GB of space on a DVD, meaning much of the visual detail on the film will be lost, and the audio codecs available on DVD are 2ch PCM (around CD quality), Dolby Digital at up to 640kb/sec, and DTS at 1.5mb/sec. This bitrate must be shared by ALL channels, meaning there is less than CD quality available for each channel. There is 50GB of space on a blu-ray allowing a much more true-to-the-film transfer of the video. On the audio side, the codecs available on Blu-Ray included uncompressed multichannel PCM (better than CD quality LPCM available for all channels simultaneously) Dolby Digital +, Dolby TrueHD (up to 18mb/sec!!), and DTS-HD Master Audio. The latter two are claimed to be bit-for-bit identical to the studio master. So, with all this potential improvement in audio and video quality, I'm looking for BDs of performances over DVDs. I agree that it takes a lifetime to build a collection of good performances, and I'm probably going to have to read reviews and just plain roll the dice on some of these. BTW I'm picking up Chronos and the Led Zeppelin BDs for now. {Edit: also, I'm watching on a 106" screen, so the video quality or lack thereof is very apparent to me!}
  23. So, the P-39f is a nominal 4ohm speaker. I forget the math, but my understanding is that a lower resistive load preceived by the amp actually makes this spekaer harder to drive. I also see that on most (all?) amp spec sheets, the rated power in watts goes up considerably when rating a 4ohm load vs. 8ohm. I also see, at least for my amp, that THD goes up [] http://www.klipsch.com/products/discontinued/details/2005.aspx Can anyone shed light on the principles at play here? Obviously I like the idea of more headroom and I can clearly see that .05% THD is greater than .03% THD but I don't have any kind of feel for how audible a .02% THD diffrence is. The specs (if they are to be believed) for something like the Bryston 6bSST are freaking outstanding at a claimed .007%thd http://www.bryston.ca/6bsstspec.html but I'm not sure I need 500wpc!
  24. Seti, First of all, it puts a big ole smile on my face when my own pictures or articles (Klipschcorner) gets quoted back to me, so I forgive anything you've ever said . As far as the design/development process of the Palladium, these are the main sources of information that I know of: There is a press release (http://germancarscene.com/2008/04/23/bmw-group-designworksusa-designs-innovative-premium-home-speaker-for-the-legendary-klipsch-brand/) by the design company that states some of the inspiration and process for the way the speaker looks. Obviously the boat-tail design has huge acoustic advantages too. The old Klipsch press release for the Reference Premiere line (the Palladium clearly gets much of its DNA from this ultimately failed project) states varoius design goals and such. The Klipsch press releases for the P-93F state some design philosophy and goals. The interview I did with Jim Garret (no longer with Klipsch ) and Chris Pe ()rrins has the most detail regarding the actual design and development process of anything I personally know about.
