  1. Holy crap! Look what I found while looking for junk in this thread (http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/107390.aspx) http://www.amazon.com/MUSSORGSKY-Exhibition-Stokowski-Transcriptions-Experience/dp/B001BHTVVK/ref=sr_1_52?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1217341009&sr=1-52 DTS lossless!
  2. So, Larry's DVD demo of various classical performances has got me thinking of picking up a few things like this. However! Since high def video is looking so nice these days, and since the potential bitrates of high-def audio is astronomical (better than CD quality for every channel) I'm looking to get some musical performances on BluRay. Anyone have any experiences (standard def or high def) with any of these? http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=amb_link_6333352_11?ie=UTF8&node=387547011%2C163420&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=left-2&pf_rd_r=119ZY7PY3GWREMGDSPVJ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=408328601&pf_rd_i=193640011
  3. Ok, so, it looks like: Saturday, August 9th at Damon's place. We'd start maybe after lunch-ish, listen to music music music, concoct some sort of bratwurst dinner, drink beer, music music music, maybe a movie? Wrap up at??? I might start another thread and ask one of our marvelous forum admins to sticky-ify it? Who's IN, who' MAYBE in, and are you bringing any gear? I'm happy to provide food but I might need help with beverages!
  4. There's an SACD option on the Telerec page, I may give that one a try, thanks. If anyone can speak to the quality of the DVD though, that would be the preferred route.
  5. I am looking for a specific highest-quality recording of this, can anyone suggest one?
  6. Thanks. Though I just got a new camera and have made big strides, I'm eons from being able to take pics as nice as the ones of your room.
  7. Nicely put ClaudeJ1, though I'm not sure I fit your profile of a Palladium buyer! One thing I sometimes have trouble with is the hammering on the "fully horn loaded" dogma. Yes, historically the top of the line Klipsch has always been fully horn loaded. For those who were at the 2008 Pilgrimage, recall Jim Hunter stating the never-changing principles by which Klipsch engineers have always designed speakers. He spoke of low distortion, efficiency, etc. None of those goals were "to put horns in stuff". It just so happens that because of the laws of physics horns are a cheap and direct way of attaining these goals. When you want to get performance out of smaller enclosure, 3 woofers instead of folded horn, etc you are fighting physics and have to spend a lot more money to get where you want to be. In my interview with the esteemed Mr. Hunter, he said there's no way Paul wouldn't be proud of the Palladium.
  8. OK, sounds like the 9th is firming up. Should we try to cook brats or something as well? John: you've met my brother, the sasquatch, he's strong enough to lift these speakers, so on Friday I should have them in a better position and have some of the panels moved around
  9. ... for this week? I need new music for my new speakers.
  10. You come up with any plans yet doc? Should I move forward with the blue foam for the ceiling?
  11. OK folks, so far the most interest seems to be the 9th or 10th of August. Who all is still in?
  12. Fixed in Firefox! Firefox didn't like "width=100%", it wanted "width=1024"; [6] damn browsers.
  13. Fixed for Firefox 2 & 3 (It didn't like width="100%")
  14. If you used the zoom app, it would tell you this already.... All the drivers get some break in before they leave the factory. I've put at least 12 hours on these speakers by now, I'm not sure what counts as "break in time" ...
  15. Bill: you will see a blue "Get Silverlight" image on the page, click on that. I edited the original post to provide warning. Trust me, the image program I threw together is pretty slick if I do say so!
  16. Listening Impressions I typed "Listening Impressions" and then stared at the screen for a while. I didn't know what I was going to say besides "these things are freakin astounding". The first track I played was Beethoven's 9th, and I immediately decided my particular recording wasn't good enough so I threw in Steely Dan Aja and punched up "Home at Last". I was immediately taken away. I've listened to this song nearly every day since discovering it but the astounding sparkle from the symbols and the clarity of the mid range was suddenly magical. I quickly pulled out Aja and threw in a greatest hits so listen to "Do it again" and "Reelin' in the Years". I quickly pulled this out and put in Sting's "Fields of Gold". I quickly pulled this out and put in Lorena McKennit, then Voices of Light, then Bizet's "Carmen", then Type O Negative, then Metallica's Black albu, then the Led Zeppelin BBC sessions, then the Sweeney Todd soundtrack, then "Lesium", .... I think you get the picture. For a while I couldn't force myself to listen to a whole song as I scrambled to hear every track I've ever loved on these speakers. It's harder to find well-recorded bass tracks, but with "L'immortal" and some tracks off of the black album I quickly heard that the bass was just as articulate, just as dynamic as the midrange. About the time I realized I was listening to the system, not the music, on some of the poorly recorded albums (ahem, talking to you "Raising Sand") I had to return the dolly I'd rented to haul these monsters and eat when I came back. By then people had started arriving and I ran through some of the nicer tracks again (I'm going to Home-At-Last people do death) and proceeded to part-BS and part actually listen until about 10:30 when everyone had to leave. I finally had time to run the Audyssey setup for multichannel and check out some movie clips. As Kate Blanchett narrate's the begging of "The Fellowship of the Ring" and what's his face screamed at the Spaaaaaaaaaartan's I was pleased to see that the P-27c was keeping up much better than when my guests were over: it's a couple of feet closer and 2.5 db hotter and now blends well with the P-39F. I threw in Casino Royale to listen to Chris Cornell's opening track (that man has some vocal chops) and ended up sitting through the whole movie. The amount of machine gun punch and gentle wine glass clinking detail in the uncompressed 5.1 PCM soundtrack just wasn't what I remembered. My sound panels are in the wrong places and the speakers are not quite positioned where I think they'll ultimately have to go. I don't think I could lift one of these speakers myself (spikes make it hard to slide) if you put a gun to my head, so I'm going to have to requisition help to play with placement. Obviously I'm pleased. Looking back at some of the things I've written in the past years I realize I'm much better at objectively describing the qualities and features of electronics than of speakers. I've never been so excited to just find a few minutes to run down there and play a couple of songs. My wife says they're very pretty. Over the next week I'm going to continue to rediscover my music collection and stash a notebook down there to keep track of any "oh that was cool" moments. Check out the "Palladium listening party" thread if you're interested in hearing for yourself.

  19. You can view a "story" of unpacking these guys here, preview screenshot of what you'll see below: {Edit: this link requires the Silverlight browser plugin. Its a small download and its totally worth it!!} {Edit 2: Fixed for Firefox! Firefox seems to have some issues with the paths to the images, I will post a fix this week.} http://www.klipschcorner.com/PalladiumZoom.aspx?model=p39f
  20. Works in Firefox 2 and 3 for sure, Windows and Mac OSX and up; requires the Silverlight plugin and prompts you to install it.
  21. Here's the URL: http://www.klipschcorner.com/PalladiumZoom.aspx
  22. On my DSL @ home it takes HOURS to upload the sort of project that I'm in the process of creating, so here is a preview. I have created a "Deep Zoom" application that tells the story of unboxing the Palladium center channel speaker and setting it up in my home theater. The app shows instructions on how to zoom in/out, pan, etc. Clicking on each image shows a snippet about what's going on. I'll post the URL when this thing finally completes..
  23. The BluRay version of Beside you in Time is very excellent, all live stuff with High Def sound to go with it. I don't like the newer stuff as much, but some of the slower songs off the past couple of albums: Right where it belongs, Zero Sum, is pretty good. Avoid "The Slip" entirely.
  24. I hope John, Southern, and doobie2 had a good time, my family can be a bit crazy! Ok, fine, actually I am the crazy one. In addition to showing off speakers, I do like to show off my fam, especially Mrs. Payne. Not only did she support my purchase, not only did she help me dolly these monsters down the stairs, she notices we're running low on refreshments and she comes downstairs and offers to run out for beer so we don't run out while we're listening and BSing. My wife is truly a saint among women. My zoom application to show off all the pictures should be done by Sunday night, and I'll finally be ready to talk about sound on Monday morning.
