  1. I'm riding RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) this year, and wonder if any of you are along or near the route? I would enjoy taking part in a vacation pastime of meeting fellow Klipschers and listening to your setup if you are so inclined.

I'm sure there are some Klipsch afficianados in the land of corn.

PM or reply here. I sorta remember a user named Iamtnbiker? I'm sure there are others, but using the member search feature is difficult

    thanks,

  2. Here's the best digital recording of Virgil Fox's 1977 performance of the famed Toccata & Fugue on the Ruffatti organ at Garden Grove Community Church in CA...1990 LaserLight (Delta Music, Inc. 15 313).

If you find that CD, you'll also have a stunning rendition of the Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C. By far my favorite!

  3. Here's the crazy thing, even with the silky smooth quickness the road bike provides, my favorite machine, by FAR, is this one, an early 1980's steel bike with old style friction shifters and 27x1 1/4 wheels. This is my everyday commuter. I got it for $25 at a garage sale.

It's a little younger than my Khorns, but doesn't sound nearly as sweet. The Khorns don't ride quite as well. They both know their place.

  4. Shimano Ultrega shifting, 53/39 front, 12/25 rear. Shimano Flight Deck computer. These things came with the bike when I bought it used. The wheels are non-stock and were the best upgrade. I got them last year before riding RAGBRAI. Mavic Kysiriums. I'm a big guy at 190 (6'3") and I had read where these wheels were prone to failure with big folks, but I've got over 4000 miles on 'em now and they're still rock steady.

Oh, the seat is different and the seat post is too.. it's a zero-offset carbon post. A tad more comfy than the stock post. The seat is some model or another by Specialized. I'm lucky to have a local bike shop that's very good, so every time I've wanted suggestions they've steered me in the right direction. Sort of like this forum w/ respect to sound.

Just got back from a 90 mile ride through the rolling hills in Kentucky with a bunch of friends. What a great way to spend the day. I'm swimming in endorphins. [:P]

  5. The Scott 222C that's being offered currently is an EL34 based amp. It's a beauty, and I almost considered buying it myself. If you have the scratch I'd go ahead with it. You won't lose much money, if any, if you decide to sell it. I'm betting that you would like it.

Hey Woo the Scott 222C uses EL84 output tubes. Good quality EL84 amps are one of my favorites!

I use to have one and I really liked it with my KHorns Michael.

heh. what he said. I went and got the 299B from my kid's room and hooked it up to the khorns just because it's been a long time since I've done that. Yep... it's nice!

  6. Michael,

    FYI

You heard my khorns in a 20 x 12 foot room with my Scott 355 preamp / Scott 208 power amp (a 7591 based power amp)

The 299B that I have powers my son's Tannoy SGM 12's. I bought it from Texas42, a forum member, and it was good to go right out of the box. Craig had done his 'magic' on it and I've been quite pleased with it. I've had it on my khorns, but I like the 355 better. As Craig mentioned in the 222C thread... different cut of beef from the same cow....

My khorns have ALK crossovers, and THEY were the best upgrade I've EVER made. Gary mentioned on the other thread 'Colter needs tubes' that you should get good crossovers. Do it. He's right.

Good luck and have fun with this.

  7. Live is where it's at, but as far as studio stuff goes, try finding a copy of "ACE", Bob Wier's solo project. Even though it's labelled as his solo project, The Grateful Dead is the "backup band"

my very first rock n' roll concert was 5/18/77. Atlanta, GA at the Fox Theater. Good Ole Grateful Dead.

    WOW!

  8. I was a piano major and voice secondary in college. I also play guitar and conduct choirs.

Tigerman, I used to play organ (studied for 3 years), but haven't in years. Traditional churches (where the pipe organs are around here) and Woodogs don't play well together.

I've played keys for rock and country ensembles as well as accompanying singers and instrumentalists in the traditional literature. Like you, I always wear earplugs when doing gigs that involve amplifiers.

When I discovered Klipsch that was the end of the road for me.

  9. Bill,

I have a 430 powering my son's Tannoy SGM 10B speakers, and since I cleaned and lubed the pots on it it sounds very fine.

I'm interested in the 730 or 930 because both of those models have good power and both can also accept inputs directly into the power amp section from a mixing board.

I'll be replacing an Onkyo TX-4500III receiver that works fine but has none of the warmth I enjoy with the 430.

The extra power is just, well, wanted because it'll be powering 4 Cornwalls at my church, a LARGE space.

There currently a nice 730 on Ebay that I'm watching, but I rather buy a fixer upper from folks here than a pristine one from there. I've gotten quite a few good deals through this forum.

  10. I had the opportunity to meet him in 1976 (or 77??) when he came to Camden, SC to promote the (then new) Spoletto festival in Charleston, SC. The occasion was a small group of movers and shakers (i.e. $$$$$$$) of the community who had gathered to hear an all-Beethoven concert on a restored Broadwood piano-forte that had been donated to our church. My mother was the music director there, my college piano instructor at the time was giving the concert, and those two reasons are why I could attend. I was certainly not a mover or a shaker.

Handsome, sharp, impeccably dressed, the man seemed to be a giant.
