  1. Is this normal? I mean, it's very low in volume -- but it's there. The other Super Amp I just sold didn't do it. Could this be a result of the larger transformer?f> ------------------ Deanf>s> Klipsch RF7s - AE-25 DJH - AE-3 DJH - Sony 9000ES f>s>
  2. Don't the Scala's, Belles, K-horns, and original Cornwalls all share the same drivers? It's amazing to me that they would sound so different from one another.f> ------------------ Deanf>s> Klipsch RF7s - AE-25 DJH - AE-3 DJH - Sony 9000ES f>s>
  3. Thanks Weiming! Nice link. Kelly -- your funny. My interest in firearms started with black powder back in the 70's. Most shooters are involved with the sport simply because it's great recreation and fun. I don't personally know any shooter who even has a remote interest in violence. The 'loons' ARE out there however, and this is all the more reason for the stable minded and gentle to remain armed. This is a complicated issue. I will only say that if you are ever confronted with a dire situation -- you might find that dialing for a pizza will net a faster response than dialing 911. A firearm is the only thing that makes say, a 90lb. woman equal with a 220lb. maniac. It is a shame that a large segment of our society has become so lazy and irresponsible -- that you can't even trust them with a toaster oven. This, along with so many unstable people in our society, has led me to the idea that it's not necessarily a good idea to let ANYONE have a gun. I'm a big advocate of mandatory safety classes, a demonstration of proficiency with the firearm, and licensing. Hell, we need at least this to drive a freaking car. I'm also a big advocate of concealed carry. An armed society is a polite society, as long as all are armed. The alternative is for only the wicked to be armed. This does not bode well for the righteous. At any rate, we only scream the 2nd amendment when everyone starts picking on us, and making us out to be a bunch of psychos. Fini -- our church doesn't have a balcony. Besides, I usually only carry my handgun to church, nestled inside my Bible case with my Bible. Hey, you never know when the preacher might go 'David Koresh', or 'Jim Jones' on you. f>------------------ Deanf>s> Klipsch RF7s - AE-25 DJH - AE-3 DJH - Sony 9000ES f>s>
  4. Painted White? That's just raw birch -- look again, you can even see the grain. I seriously doubt the possibility of the woofer(s) not working, I mean -- that is just a ridiculously obvious thing. If you have ever heard a speaker with the woofer unhooked then you know what I'm saying here. Max -- I say go back and grab those damn things. Tell the owner you want to hear them IN YOUR ROOM on YOUR SYSTEM. Get them home and give them a good going over without distraction. Check the drivers, and the wiring to the drivers, and make sure they are not running out of phase. If they flatten out in your house, producing something in the area of music, maybe you should consider buying them, and modifying them with different networks. If YOU think they sound bad, then YOU KNOW they sound bad to the owner also. Offer him $1500 and tell him that in the present condition they are not very "musical" and that you will have to modify them with new networks (Al's crossovers). That should take care of that money burning a hole in your pocket f> ------------------ Deanf>s> Klipsch RF7s - AE-25 DJH - AE-3 DJH - Sony 9000ES f>s>
  5. ROTFLOL -- Well, with that room those poor Scalas never had a chance to begin with. In a very overdamped room they probably sound half decent. I had a feeling it would be an assault on your hearing. I still haven't recovered from my experience with them this weekend. f>------------------ Deanf>s> Klipsch RF7s - AE-25 DJH - AE-3 DJH - Sony 9000ES f>s> This message has been edited by deang on 07-10-2002 at 02:49 PM

  7. Yeah, I was thinking about that 15 watts to 13 watts thing last night as I was drifting off to sleep. Then I started thinking about 13 watts to 9 watts. After so many years of solid state -- I still find it difficult to keep perspective on the power thing. I specifically upgraded to the DJH version of the Super Amp, not so much to in an attempt to squeeze that LAST ounce of transparency out of my system, but to gain the extra 3db of headroom -- since I also use my system to watch movies. The extra power is certainly nice in this regard. What I am really interested in is learning how to solder, and actually learning something about how these things are put together and work. If I find I have an 'upgrade' at the end of it all -- well then, that's all the better. However, I am really satisfied with how things sound right now -- and I will have the AE-3 shortly. Complicating matters further, I also have my eye on a Romanian Romak 3 Dragunov 7.62x54R sniper rifle. Hmmm. 13 watts, 9 watts, 7.62x54R. 13 watts, 9 watts, 7.62x54R. 13 watts, 9 watts, 7.62x54R. I think I need to sleep on this some more. f>------------------ Deanf>s> Klipsch RF7s - AE-25 DJH - AE-3 DJH - Sony 9000ES f>s>
  8. The more I look at them the less ugly them seem. I never really cared for the looks of them -- but they are starting to grow on me. It will be interesting to see what your impressions are. 10. I made a joke last week while discussing the power cord deal that barometric pressure is more responsible for day to day changes in the sound of our systems than any cable. Well, I wasn't really joking. If I had your system I would probably replace the Creek passive with a preamp. I've been checking out the Consonance stuff. Since you are on a budget why don't you consider building a f> preamp f> ------------------ Deanf>s> Klipsch RF7s - AE-25 DJH - AE-3 DJH - Sony 9000ES f>s>

  12. That's what I get for asking the guy at Radio Shack. I guess it's a good thing I didn't have to solder. Yeesh. 13. Answer: One (1) Super Amp DJH The bi-amplification experiment officially came to an end last night as I boxed up and shipped off my orignal Super Amp. It was kind of hard letting go of it. Bi-amping is quite the kick-*** sound. OTOH, I also feel the sound of running one is considerably smoother, and a bit warmer as well -- which is not a bad thing in my book. Before I could hook up the Super Amp DJH, I knew I would have to switch the leads from the 4 ohm taps to the 8 ohm taps, or -- so I was told by the previous owner. Taking the bottom plate off of the amp revealed a maze of wires, and a host of other things I could not readily identify. f>I had gone to Radio Shack earler today and picked out my soldering iron, braid, and flux rosin solder. I was all set to go. Looking underneath, I realized I was going to have to remove the binding posts with an open ended wrench. There was no way I was going to get a soldering iron up in there. I had the manual out trying to read the various road maps. When I finally found the section showing the wiring configuration for both 4 ohm and 8 ohm -- I saw that I would have to solder the green wire to the positive binding post. Simple enough. I started to go to work when I realized the green wire was already soldered to the binding post, and the yellow wire is folded over and tie strapped. Man, I don't even get to solder anything. f>So, the previous owner was running 4 ohm speakers with the amp wired for 8 ohm operation. I wonder how this impacted the net result of the sound he was getting out of it -- or if it did at all? I also have to wonder how this impacted my bi-amping experiment, since I had this thing tied to four woofers with an impedance of 4 ohms -- or even less. After hooking up the DJH and letting her rip -- I was happy to hear the warmth back in the system. It also seems to project just as well as the bi-amped setup -- but without trying to bite my head off. As far as the DJH version sounds as compared to the base version I had -- I'll be darned if I can hear any difference. I certainly enjoy the additional headroom -- which I knew would come in handy. f>The kind of music I like may acount for why I can't hear any difference. OTOH, I have not had much time to listen, and only had time tonight for a 1/2 a CD. I may notice some differences later in the week as I settle in with it. I'm sending the money order off to Ed in the morning for his AE-3 DJH. I'm very curious to see how it will stack up against the monster Line 1. f>------------------ Deanf>s> Klipsch RF7s - AE-25 DJH - AE-3 DJH - Sony 9000ES f>s>

  15. Well, it's a done deal. Ed and myself will be making the money for AE-3 exchange this week. I'm nervous as hell, because I have no idea what the impact will be to the sound of my system. 17. Q-man took what I consider to be a less than attractive speaker to begin with anyways, and completey transformed them into something nothing short of gorgeous. Very, very nice indeed. Really, sitting in front of K-horns, the LaScalas almost look like large bookshelves sitting on the floor. Amazing. f>------------------ Deanf>s> Klipsch RF7s - AE-25 DJH - AE-3 DJH - Sony 9000ES f>s> This message has been edited by deang on 07-09-2002 at 10:12 AM
  18. It's no secret that I absolutely ADORE the sound of the AE-25 with the RF7's. I have NEVER heard a better combo for Rock & Metal. My friend Mark bought my previously owned RC7's (remember I took them and twirled the horns, using them as bookshelves on stands), and is running them with Adcom stuff. It's intense to say the least, but I can only handle it for about 20 minutes -- after that, I start curling up into the fetal position. f> ------------------ Deanf>s> Bi-amplified Klipsch RF7s using a pair of AE-25 PP triode amps. 19. It's true, I never get to hear them properly driven or in the ideal setting -- I always seem to hear them with solid state. I realize Heritage would sound much better with tubes -- but I don't care what you drive them with, it's not going to totally transform the sonic signature. I'm really starting to lean towards this idea that what kind of music you like and listen to should also play a factor in what you find the most appealing in a speaker. f>------------------ Deanf>s> Bi-amplified Klipsch RF7s using a pair of AE-25 PP triode amps. 20. I heard some LaScala's Saturday, and I can say without any question that they are NOT for me. I really thought the sound exhibited had more in common with 'stage' type loudspeakers, than the smoothness and refinement found in most high-end offerings. Sure, they were clear as a bell, with what I felt was darn good bass -- but there is 'open', and then there is 'OPEN' to the point of obnoxiousness. They might be great with laid back Jazz, or Classical -- but with rock music, it is just too much of a good thing. I can maybe see why some might like them -- but they are not a set of speakers I would want to live with. I'll take the richness and texture of an RF7, over the 'bullet into the brain' sound of a LaScala anytime. f>------------------ Deanf>s> Bi-amplified Klipsch RF7s using a pair of AE-25 PP triode amps. 22. I seriously doubt the bass of the RF7 can hang with the folded horn bass of the K-horn. I'm pretty sure the K-horn would dust it pretty handily. Where I think you might be wrong is regarding the top end. I really believe the RF7 HF driver has detail in spades and offers a more "refined" sound. f> ------------------ Deanf>s> Bi-amplified Klipsch RF7s using a pair of AE-25 PP triode amps. 23. I had my eye on that Cary SLP-94L on AudiogoN for about a week. I also sent an email about it, and one of my questions regarding scratches or other cosmetic blemishes went unanswered. I did find out the tubes were 9 months old -- I couldn't get the seller to budge on price. I figure with Ed's unit, at least I know exactly what I'm getting -- and it obviously would be a nice physical match with the AE-25. I'll get tube rectalfication -- so I can see what that fuss is all about, and what appears to be a simpler circuit as compared to the SLP-94L. The advertising info on the preamp doesn't say "Jensen" -- so I would presume they are not used. Vacuum tube rectification with a 6CA4 rectifier. 24. Well, he did transfer the money to Paypal within 20 minutes after our discussion. I originally paid $1000 for the amp. I then bought the EL-34's for around $100, the Cleartops for $32, and the Beckmans's for $110. It cost me $192 to use the amp for 4 months. Not bad really, considering the enjoyment I got out of it. I still can't help but feel that if someone has a propensity for making offers and then not following through -- that this should be reflected in the feedback. This type of thing could cost one a potential sale -- if another offer comes through, and you decline, thinking it is already sold. f>s>------------------ Deanf>s> Bi-amplified Klipsch RF7s using a pair of AE-25 PP triode amps. 25. Well, as usual, curiosity is getting the best of me. Since I just sold one of my Super Amps I have the money to try out the DJH AE-3, if I can pry it out of Ed's hands. Looks like horizontal biamping lasted less than a week. It sounded great, but then again -- so did one amp. I'm convinced biamping gave me gains in the bass -- but the highs seemed a little etched. If I turned down the volume control just a wee bit on the amp running the horns, it tamed things down somewhat, but at the expense of some dynamics. At any rate -- it was probably overkill. Since I still have my Line 1, I can make direct comparisons between the two preamps. It should be interesting, and I will certainly be posting my impressions. I figure Kelly steered me right with the Super Amp, and so there is no reason to believe he isn't steering me right on this also. I still think the Super Amp is a giant killer with the RF7's. Ed -- you have email. f>s> ------------------ Deanf>s> Bi-amplified Klipsch RF7s using a pair of AE-25 PP triode amps. A SF-Line 1 loaded with 6922's and a 9000ES finish the front.
