  1. Just got a single 1975 La Scala for center channel duties and would have been perfectly happy not to do this mod. But now that I have read this post this mod will be in the back of my mind until I try it. My left and right La Scalas are 2004 models without the metal horns so there may be a slight difference in sound. Waiting on a new crossover for the center LS so once I get it in I can then decide if I want to try this.

  2. Won this one early Sunday morning for $300 and by noon had meet the seller halfway to Houston and was back at my house outside of Austin by 1:30 P.M.

The crossover looked like it was 50 years old so ordered a new crossover from forum memember BEC and should have them Wed. This will give me La Scalas for the left, center, right speakers and a pair of KLF 20s for the rears with a RSW 12 sub. For my next upgrade A BIGGER HOUSE!! Once I get the crossover in the LS and figure out how to put the speaker under my 280 pound tv(34 inch widescreen Sony) I'll post some pictures on the show your HT set up.

  4. I have a Denon 2900 universal DVD player and a NAD C542 CD player. On almost all CDs the NAD sounds better but on SACDs and DVDA discs the Denon sounds very good. Does anyone know of a universal tube DVD player? That would be a great product to have.

Also with computer chips that a year or 2 ago were only in the very costly DVD players are now being put in cheap DVD players. So the $150 DVD player sounds very good.

  5. I posted some pics under "1975 single La". They did some sort of mod on the crossover so may have to get a ALK or one of Dean's crossovers. The cabinet needs work but I'm going to put the speaker under the tv stand and make a speaker grille that will cover up everthing below the tv. So I won't have to do any cosmetic repairs for now.

  6. The guy said it was being used at a church so not sure what they did to the crossover. Maybe they did the mod so the preacher could spread the word with the heavenly sound of Klipsch. I think maybe getting a ALK crossover or one of Dean's crossovers would be the safest thing to do!

  7. I think I am going to raise my tv stand enough to put the speaker under neath and then make a speaker grille 48 inches wide and 38 inches high that will cover the speaker and everything below the tv. This way I do not have to spend a lot of time trying to refinish it.

  8. Well picked up the single 1975 La Scala for my center channel and it's going to need a tune up! I do not know anything about crossovers but this one looks like it needs to be replaced. Trying to post pics, this one should be the mid horn magnet

  9. Well open mouth insert feet!! I just checked my email and had a message from ebay saying I had won the auction for $305. Now I have to drive to Houston pick them up and. So now I will have La Scalas on the 3 front channels with KLF 20s as my rears. This one is a 1975 and mine are 2004 so I may have to get Dean to make a crossover that will match the ones in the 2004 La Scalas. May not have to since I'm not going to use the center to overpower the other two but use it to fill in the center a little bit to bring up vocals and any solo instrament playing center stage. I'll post pics once I get it.

  10. Well I was going to try and get the single La Scala on Ebay but I wasn't sure I would be able to watch the end and keep bidding. So I set up a Auction snipe but for some reason did not work. I was willing to pay $110 more than the winner did. It was the first time I did this so I guess I did not set up right. Even if I did not set up right I'm just not going to bid unless I am sure I can watch the end bidding.

  11. With your tube gear those La Scalas should sound great!! I bought a pair of 2004 La Scalas ($3550) and I'm using a Caying tube int as just a amp with my Luxman preamp and love the sound but the upgrade bug is always lurking trying to bite me! So later this year I'm going to get a tube pre and monoblocks. Right now I'm going to try and win the single La Scala on ebay for my center channel.

  12. I have been buying more SACDs, DVD Audio discs that have the center channel info and this really sounds great! I also found a way to use a regular cd in my Denon 2900 DVD player and mixing my HT setup with my 2 channel set up that gives a 3 channel presentation. I have a Denon 4800 that I run the preouts for the left and right channels to my Luxman preamp. The Luxman has a much better sound than the Denon so this works for me. The only downside is when watching a movie the Denon controls the volume of the center and rear speakers and the Luxman controls the left and right speakers. My Denon remote controls everything so this is a easier way of adjusting the levels of the speakers. I don't have to go into the set up and raise the volume level of the center chanel + or - 12 instead just raise the volume on the remote.

Ok I found out by puting the A/V reciever on DVD and then hitting the dolby/dts surround button it will play a cd in mono on the center speaker. I then turn up the left and right speakers going through the Luxman. Then I just turn the center channel up so things like vocals are perfectly centered and sound like they are right in front of you. This may just be my system but at lower listening level I notice that vocals may not sound perfectly centered and the music is a little louder than the vocals. This fixes the problem and it only takes a second on the remote. So a La Scala center would sound even better!

  13. I want to thank Elydaman and his wife for having me over on Sunday to hear his KHorns they were incredible!! Elydaman has a gorgeous house in the hill country here in Texas that made comming back to my little 1100 square foot house just not the same. Also watching Blade 2 on his 100 inch projection screen also makes watching movies on my 34 inch sony just not the same anymore either!

The first thing you notice when walking into Elydaman's beautiful home theater room is the KHORNS. Just seeing them gives a feeling of immense power and that is exactly what they did! They put out a wave of sound that envelops you and slams you back in your seat and gives you the feeling of the band playing live in front of you. The main difference between the KHorns and the La Scalas is how the KHorns uses it's larger bass horn with the walls to give a sound that is fuller than the La Scalas. With the addition of a Klipsch 15 subwoofer(I think it was the RSW 15) which blended in perfectly with the KHorns it had the whole room shaking!! I have some DVDaudio discs in DTS that sounded incredible on his system!! The C7 is a excellent center channel to use with the KHorns and La Scalas and Elydaman's 5 channel SS amp matched the sound of the C7 center to the KHorns where I could not tell the difference.

We then switched in my Cayin TA 30 int tube amp and fired it up. The biggest diference between the two amps is the tube amp gave the sound a fuller body and the midrange and tweeter was a bit smoother. The SS 5 channel amp was a little more detailed and it had better bass. The 35 watt tube amp did not have any trouble driving the KHorns to the same level of sound that the 5 channel amp did.

I think this helped Elydaman to hear the difference and make the decesion to get some tube monoblocks but now the real fun part begins-which ones to buy?

Thanks again Elydaman for having me over had a blast!

  14. Elydaman has not heard his Khorns with a tube amp and I have not heard KHorns in over 20 years and do not really remember how they sound. Well I have a Cayin TA 30 int amp and Elydaman has KHorns and lives 90 miles away so Sunday I'm off to Elydaman's ranch. While my Cayin are nowhere near the tube amp that Craigs VRDs are it will still give him an idea of how his KHorns sound with tube gear. I want to thank Elydaman for inviting me over to his place! For me the last upgrade I will ever do (yeah right) will be to get me 3 VRDs and a Peach preamp, and a 50-70 inch plasma tv, and a better sounding DVD player, and some Khorns, and a much, much bigger house to put everything in. Should take about 6-10 years to get it all and by then the Jubilees will be available so I will have to have them also, and so on, and so on. In the next year and half I am looking at the 3 VRDs and a Peach preamp. After that I'll have 4.5-8.5 years to get the rest.
