  1. Can someone explain the bass traps they made using cardboard tubes (like the ones they sell at Home Depot for concrete) and then filling them with sand. Since the guy doing the room is a Home Theater professional with an engineering degree, Im assuming the sand is an effective media for bass traps -- but does anyone know why sand and the technical/acoustical explanation of using sand ?
  2. Carl, How would you compare the differences in listening to a CD on your JD-100A vs. your Denon DVD-2900 ? What mods does your JD-100A have ?
  3. I called my electric company about 15 years ago and here's the formula they gave me to calculate how much it costs per hour to run any electrical unit: (amps * volts) / 1000 = KWH then multiply (KWH * your electric companys KWH cost) = cost per hour to run unit Example: I have a small fan in my office that is rated at 0.8 amps, therefore: (0.8 amps * 120 volts) / 1000 = .0960 KWH .0960 KWH * .10604 KWH cost = .0102 cents > so my fan costs me about 1 cent per hour to run I got the .10604 KWH cost from my recent electric bill or you can call your local electric company and theyll have that cost for you.
  4. Colin, Parasound will be sticking with their C1/C2 because the units are upgradeable. A new software upgrade with lots of new features is said to be released next week. There is no word on any hardware upgrades yet. For more info visit the Parasound forum at http://www.htguide.com/forum/forumdisplay.php4?f=21 John

  6. Jazman, I PM'd you but I'm not sure it went through, did you receive it ??? John
  7. Tom, I like your suggestion to warm the sound up a bit -- but I've always been under the impression (not sure why) that you should not mix tubed with solid state components ???
  8. Tom, What would you recommend as a "phono stage comparable to the rest of my system" ??? John
  9. Tom, Parasound PPH-100 Phono preamp -- I'm told it is a decent unit, but since this is my first venture with a high-end turntable, I'm really not sure what effect a phono preamp has on the final sound ? John
  10. < Where did you find the best deal on it ? > I got everything at elusivedisc.com from Jason They're having a special right now for the VPI SCOUT W/ JMW 9 TONEARM & NEW DYNAVECTOR 10X5 CARTRIDGE for $1799.99 (normally $1950.00) and since I was a first time buyer the shipping was free. I also got the VPI cable from them for $199

    6.1 vs. 7.1

Bill, Define "If a room is big enough". My room is 14x21 and I have one RC-35 in the back. I also have two RF-35's that I'm not using and was going to try them in the back. Is my room too small for two rears, or would it help the rear sound ???
  13. Hello, I'm told that I want the lowest possible capacitance cable I can find, is this true ??? I need a pair of RCAs between my Scout and phono preamp -and- a pair of RCAs between my phono preamp and preamp. Can/should these two pairs be the same type cables ??? What do you recommend for between my Scout and phono preamp ??? What do you recommend for between phono preamp and preamp ??? What about the VPI JMW 1M PHONO CABLE SERIES 2 W/SHIELD RCA TO RCA -- Im told they are a decent cable but not great cable ??? Does anyone have any experience with these ??? Thanks for any help.
  14. Does anyone know where I can get the Dope from Hope papers for building acoustic room panels ??? Im told there was a web site, and I searched for it but could not find it ???
  15. What are the Dope from Hope papers? I just searched that phrase and found nothing. I need room treatments too so I am very interested in these panels. Is there a site for the Dope from Hope papers - do you have a link or ?
