This was some walnut 16X24 that was a perfect fit. Its not backed. Being wide like that you have to be carefull from spitting. After applying the glue I layed the piece down on a flat surface and held it in place. ---------------- Good work, and your thread is a fabulous resource. Nicely done. Can you share the seller's name? I see a lot of veneering in my future, some of choice and some of necessity.
  2. Can anyone recommend replacement caps and coils that would improve upon the originals but not break the bank? Brands, suppliers, etc? TIA.
  3. Here we go -- Mailboxes and Packaging Express, Lebanon, Indiana. The odds are slim that anyone here should need to cross paths with them, but if you should, be warned. You may have to tell them about something called "closed cell foam."
  4. Nice setup. Your wife is very gracious. Dumb question -- Why do you have the HII's up so high? Nice mounting job, BTW.

Maybe not your cup of tea, but they do come up with some regularity on eBay -- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3074048569&category=14993 This guy also has a set of KLF-10's up if you wanted to match your surrounds to your 20's.

I was excited for you to get those babies and try them out. I am surprised that the Mailboxes ETC place did bad, though I am not too surprised about UPS. Fellow board member Mike Lindsey sold me his Chorus IIs, had them expertly packed at Mailboxes, and they made it from FL to CT no problems. The boxes were a bit banged up, but each speaker was surrounded by 2" styrofoam on all sides. In fact, I used the same boxes in my move here to CO, and they did fine, though the moving company added a few more knicks to the boxes. When I picked up my SVS from the UPS station, the box had a pretty big hole that was kicked in. Fortunately, the sub was ok, but it was kinda surprising the abuse it took. Sounds like the seller just left the speakers there and didn't give careful instructions for their packing. Any way to get money from either the seller or UPS? Best of luck. Oh, and I was thinking of that same word that you were when I read your post. ---------------- I think you're right about the instructions part. The speakers had cardboard over each driver, and they were wrapped in some kind of styrofoam sheeting. There was no foam of any kind, although there was a layer of bubble wrap -- the kind with the really small bubbles. What that was supposed to accomplish, I have no idea. The only cushioning was packing peanuts, and the box wasn't fully packed with those. All in all, the packager was plain incompetent. I mean, UPS is UPS, and everyone knows it. Expect UPS to be gentle with your stuff? Sure, and ask the river not to rise, and ask the tides to take a day off. The packer told me they were insured for $600, but when I told the seller about all this he said he insured them for $800. He seems like a good enough guy, and at this point in the game seems to be in my corner, so right now a lot depends on his conversation with the packager today. I did get to have a little fun. I hooked up the one that still had all its pieces just to make sure it would work -- put it in place of the left Heresy. I couldn't even hear the Heresy with that Chorus going. I bet two of them sound REALLY good.

Bill ---------------- UPS was the shipper. The real problem lay in the packaging, though. If they'd been packed so that the packaging was supporting the speakers instead of the other way around, there would have been a greater chance of success. The photos I took of everything here last night aren't sharp enough for me to read the packer's name. It was one of those Mailboxes Etc type of places, though it wasn't them. I'll check the label when I get home and post that up.
  9. What came out was a 4/10 Academy, a 3/10 Chorus, and lumber and parts. How hard is it to imagine that a 90 lb wooden box takes more packing and structure than a motherboard? Some people are so stupid I can't believe they remember to breathe. If they would forget, the world would be a better place. I'm having a hard time not just throwing a raging tantrum. So much for my excellent deal, eh? In the future I'll keep in mind what they say about chickens and when to count them. So here's what I have to do to make some lemonade. I need two build two replica Chorus cabs. I need a mid horn. When the speaker fell over in the truck or got dropped or was thrown from the bridge or whatever it was that created enough impact to split the cabinet along the length of the seam between the top and the side, the weight of the driver snapped the horn in two. Naturally it landed on the crossover, so I've got to get one of those too. I'm thinking of a word that rhymes with DUCK! I guess this ought to be more than just a rant. If anyone can help me get my hands on a GOOD set of Chorus II cabinet plans, I'd appreciate that. I can use the one good one as a template, but plans would be better. And if anyone can help me source a mid horn and a clean crossover, I'd be grateful for that as well.
  10. His first name is Mike. His last name is Rowe. He makes software. He has every right to a domain name that incorporates his name and what he does. Could any reasonable person somehow confuse MikeRoweSoft with Microsoft? I guess it all depends on how you define a reasonable person.

I am really pushing it putting "four boxes" as the wife puts it, into "her" living room. ---------------- Sorry, my last post wasn't really very helpful to you. I'd start with another pair of Heresy II's on the rear. Set the receiver to phantom center, and if your fronts are well-placed, you may find you don't have to deal with getting a center. I've been very pleased with the way my Heresies place the dialog on the characters. Naturally your preferences may differ, but hey, nothing to lose by trying it out.
  12. If I were in your shoes and WAF wasn't a concern (if you're getting told to get RF 7's to replace your Forte's it sounds like you're in the tall cotton on that score), I'd be lusting after another set of Forte II's, or Quartets, or maybe Heresey II's. The first two before the last one. If I'm wrong someone will tell us both.

  14. I bought a Velodyne CHT-10 a while back to round out my bass-shy Heresies, and I've been very pleased with it. If the listening area is not over-large, this sub would probably do nicely. One just went on eBay for about $220 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3072007275&category=3275). IMO that's a great price for that piece. I wouldn't let go of mine for that. Ed

Guess you will really be enjoying that combo, just as I do now. Great buy! ---------------- Thanks! I needed something to go with my Heresies, and what I really wanted was two more sets of those. Pitched it to the spouse, who said she doesn't like the speakers up on stands much and would really rather have something floor-standing. God, I love that woman.
  16. ---------------- On 1/12/2004 7:05:20 PM dougdrake wrote: "The guy who won the AcademyChorus deal recently on e-bay made out like a fat dog scooping both up for a grand" I guess it's all perspective. I snorted when I saw how much he gave up for that combo. I paid $400 for my Chorus, so that'd mean a $600 Academy. Even at $500-600 for the Chorus, that's $400 to $500 for the Academy. Maybe it's my Scotch blood showing, but I'd never pay that much for an Academy. YOMV, of course. ---------------- Doug, I'm that guy. Would you snort less if you knew they were II's, that since the 10th three sets of Chorus II's have gone for 985, 835, and 910, and since the guy made a newbie error in calculating shipping I only paid 2/3 of the shipping cost? I got them for better than $300 under market, all things considered, so I'm licking, scratching, and farting even as I type this to you. Arf, Ed
  17. Hi Rob, I'm glad to hear the Academy mates up well with the Chorus II's since I have a set due to arrive Monday. eBay can be a great place. I'd love to see you post some pics of whatever you finally land on for this -- it sounds like a hugely fun project. Ed
  18. Since you seem intent on retiring the Academy, how about a Modified Malotky -- take the center, tweeter, and x-overs from the extra Chorus, take the woofers from the Academy, and whip out an MDF box of the same volume as the Academy but proportioned to fit all the Chorusy bits?
