  1. And to use your recent quote to my splicing question - " If someone says they don't quite look right, I would invite them to leave". Love it --
  2. Billy Bob I am using runs of 12 gauge copper machine hook up wire which in itself sounds pretty nice- I think. So splicing the Kimber would be my comparison. And you're right I've got nothin' to loose -
  3. Ok - and I am prepared for the flaming I have a pair of 8 ft Kimber 4tc in a shotgun configuration. Too short for my KHorns on a 22 ft wall. So I can undue the biwire to give me 4 eight ft cables. Splicing two eight footers gives me 16 foot pairs - perfect. The 4tc is a damn nice cable that is doing nothing for me now. Would you do this? And how? Twist the ends together and electrical tape? Twist the ends and connect with a wire nut? OR am I nuts?!
  4. Oh Sh-t I didn't realize at first glance - Are those New, I mean Klipsch Factory new?! If so well done. And if so double congrats!! Those have got to be killers --!
  5. Ain't it a great feeling! I'm on my third week with mine and enjoying every minute. Are these your first KHorns? Congrats
  6. I am a big proponent of integrated amps. Today's integrateds, or power amps with volume pots, give many seperates a run for their money. I would hate to add up the tens of thousands of $$$ I've spent on power amps mated to the right preamp with the right sounding interconnects only to find at the end of the day, at least for me the KISS principle is most satisfying. If you are looking at an exclusive two channel rig and Klipsch speakers are in the mix you might consider a tube integrated. It would not be the end all of amplifiers but you might find a decent piece for around $500. Very nice sounding digital integrateds, class D, tripath and gain clones can be had for close to your budget and sound really nice on Klipsch. They run cool, virtually no heat and no tubes to worry over. A real simple and inexpensive way to a good sounding two channel. Keep an open mind and look what's out there before jumping. Good luck.
  7. Only a comment on price as I don't have a horse in this race. I just bought a pair of '78 LS in much nicer condition for $800. Please use this for comparing prices only. Good luck

Those will most likely end up in Asia or Japan. Big money collectors for vintage JBL and Altec.
  9. A pair of TAD 1601a 15 in. drivers are on sale at AGon- $1399. Just thought I would give a mention to the upgraders' and DIY'ers among the forum. I see TAD mentioned frequently so just a heads up. Disclaimer - I have zero affiliation or interest, just forwarding info. Thanks
  10. OK - this sounds interesting but I'm lost. OTA? Going back to antennae? Without taking too much of someone's time can I have the Cliff Notes of what the H you're talking about. On the other hand I went to my cable providers office about a year ago and I told them it was BS what I pay compared to the give away price to new accounts. Been with them since they came to my area some 15 years ago. They cut my bill $60/month and I dropped the land line. I'm in for about $39/month.
  11. Yep been there too, matter of fact just last week. Found that when we wired the networks to the tweeters in my new KHorns the right side tweet was wired out of phase. Had some friends over for a listen and a golden eared veteran with years of critical listening experience was certain something didn't sound right. "Something's out of phase or the room is causing an imbalance". We look at each other, and with my three decades of hifi heard nothing, neither did another. So now I'm concerned something is wrong with my cherished KHorns so the next day I pull 'em out the corner and there it is, cross wired at the network input. Big relief, all was put right and yep they certainly sound much more coherent. Embarrassed I didn't pick it out, for several days none the less. So I used the opportunity to replace older cable with better and pipe insulation seal to the corners. All is good but a dinged ego.
  12. Now that my Heritage system has moved downstairs with plenty of room I am bringing out my long stored analogue system. I will need a phono preamp with moving coil capabilities for a Denon 103D coil cartridge. This will in turn run into a single input tube integrated. At this point I really don't want to get in too deep but test the waters for sound, enjoyment so please no multi thousand $$$ units at this point. But knowing me this could easily be a long and expensive slippery slope. With the tube amp and really only needing to boost the MC signal would a SS unit suffice or stay with tubes the entire front end? Or do I only need a step up phono amp because I will be using the volume control from the integrated. I am looking forward to this although my CD players have a very smooth, analogue in sound.
  13. Yep them's some hot mutha's for sure. Owned three or fours amps with that tube and the excessive heat finally got to me. But damn they sound good, great in fact. I had a pair of monos in a cabinet, smelled something burning and was actually burning the finish off the wood. Give 'em plenty of space and enjoy---
  14. Glad I got in when I did, though I wish it had been a bit sooner.
  15. Yep - to the scrapper I say! (Can you give me a heads up on day/date/time that might happen) Just sayin' - And can you make room in the trunk for my KHorns; we can rid the world of excess junk two at a time.
  16. Man if that is the criteria than there are but a handful with that status, right. Now Those would have some value and you'd have to be somewhat crazy to mess with those. And if that is the case my hot rods are as "Klipschorniest" as any. Thanks - I think.
  17. I see no mention of the Big 6c33c/b Russian triode. Check out Ultra high $$$ Lamm amplifiers, Almarro and Audio Mirror to name a few known builders. Antique Sound Labs also made an integrated usiing this tube. I owned a couple pr. of the AM monos, 45 watts/side in triode. The biggest, richest open sound you can imagine. This tube was first discovered being used as power supply tubes in Russian MIG fighter jets in the late '70's. A stout and highly reliable tube at a fairly low price. But prepare yourself for some Heat, big time. These make the heat thrown from say a KT88 seem like a lighting bug. Great for room heaters in the Northern climes. While the sound was immense the heat thrown from these things finally scared me away, twice.
  18. Steven and Others who have asked - for now the best pics are those shown on the Klipsch community home forum page - recent photos. Mine are the last 5. Thks Rich
  19. Moray - my new hot rod KHorns use the Selinium tweeter with a much more dispersed horn pattern over stock. Sorry I can't compare these to stock as I have no baseline. And these also have the ALK extreme slopes for squaker to tweeter.
  20. Silly - not really. Only silly when one believes he has all the answers. Asking for educated opinions from those who have owned the speaker of which I had not. I did not buy them with the idea of owning a "heirloom", I was asking from a sonic point of view. How many people here would pay a crazy asking price for a dead mint, never been moved for 30 years Klipschorns? And then change the networks so they sound right? There went your heirlooms. Are the latest Khorns "real" Klipschorns with closed backs, plastic horns, different networks, etc? Or would they be considered factory hotrods? It's a matter of semantics to a degree. What I DO know is for my limited three to fours hours of listening to my hot rod version Khorns I am over the top pleased. For what I paid in 99.5% mint condition, ALK networks and wood Fastlane midrange horn with baby cheek tweet horn and delivered to my door - I don't think I could want for more.
  21. This will be short as I find iPad typing quite tedious. The whether or not post to buy or not buy hot rod KHorns has been answered. Yes, yes and yes. As NASA once said "the eagle has landed". And now that I see/hear these in the flesh lets just agree they are "hot rods". As great as my 5 day old LaScalla's sound I was concerned whether or not the KHorns would compete. Yes they do. I had not heard KHorns in over 35 years and not sure ever in a home setting so really had no baseline comparing factory to hot rod. Just finally had the right room and they were on my Klipsch bucket list. As I listen I am confident to say my bucket is overflowing. Thanks to all that opined on my original post. And yes - They Are Klipschorns. I'll add to this tomorrow as I'm still a bit overwhelmed.
  22. First factory fresh LS I bought were in the late '70's, walnut stain, they were georgous but life happens and they left. Since then and starting in the early 2000's I have owned Hereseys (twice) Forte 1, Forte 2, CW 1 and Belles. All gone again but now being a reinessance man I am back to my horn roots with a vengence. Started with Quartets as they are of managable size and now the Real horns; LS arrived last Thursday and the speaker that has always alluded me for room/size consideration, the mighty KHorn's will arrive tomorrow. Both will reside in a semi-finished downstairs, half carpet, open beam ceilings, right at 20 feet back wall, set in perfect corners. Towed out a few degrees from triangulated center. By far the best for this space. The LS are nothing short of phenominal in this spot. I certainly can't remeber the sound from 35 years ago and in nothing more than a large bedroom but I know they didn't sound like this. Sitting dead center about 12 feet back the soundstage in incredible. LS don't image?, BS as our famous PWK would have said. I am talking about an actual sound stage, it blows my mind. LS have no bass?, well I say BS to that. It may not have the bass I will hear from the new KHorns but they indeed produce bass. Tight, reasonably deep, accurate bass. (Can the modified KH sound better than this?) A simple system of CD, integrated and speakers. Simple, solid core copper interconnects and copper speaker wire. I have run 3 different amps - Eastern Electric 6B8M 8 watts, a well built amp that sounded good on other speakers but way too thin for the LS. Next - Dennis Had (founder/designer of Cary Audio) Inspire KT66 single ended about 6-8 watts. Much nicer, actually very good. Much more meat on the bone and I could live with this set up BUT the best sound and IMO by a fair margin is the Audio Sector gain clone built by Peter Daniels. About 45 watts. This is a sound that for This room and These ears is one to behold. Rich, deep tight bass, a mid almost creamy in texture, very pleasant upper end, smoother than either tube amp yet still with all the detail you want. An enveloping sound stage. The kind of presentation where you don't want the music to stop. For those wondering about "digital" and the many offshoots from that, if it is the Right amp it is truly spectacular. If the Khorns perform as well on this amp I will have Peter build me a no-holds bar integrated and be done with the front end. And did I mention Quiet? Huh, I can't hear you. I am talking not even a faint hiss from the tweets, Nothing. Am I an expert, no but I have owned tens of thousands of $$ woth of amps/pre's over the years and this I know - I am done messing with seperates. I have proven that for me the hassle is not worth it. I have owned VRD's, VTL's, Cayin, Audio Mirror with the giant furnace hot 6H33 Russian power tube (best tube amps I have owned but scarry hot) and more I can't recall the names. For SS - Threshold, Clayton (one of the best Class A amps you can buy), Forte by Threshold, Mac and others. Needless to say this combo I speak of is incredible musical, live, accurate and just a joy to hear. Now to see if the K Horn is indeed Kind of the Hill. Thanks
  23. Not quite. And another reason I felt this a good opportunity for my first Khorns as they are being brought to my home, Monday morning. I really couldn't ask for more. And how's this for getting back in the Heritage horn game - LaScalla's delivered last Thursday and Khorns Monday.
  24. Respected - Yes. Competent - Yes. And see above from GotHover. Dave Harris did the resto and horn mods. My mid is at ease with the work my concern was that I was buying a "real" Khorn. But maybe better?
