  1. Hello. I decided its time to incorporate some newer tech into my system. I just ordered a new 4KTV with only HDMI inputs and decided I have to finally either get a new AVR or sell my RF-7 5.1 system and go a different direction. My old Yamaha AVR is 15yrs old and has no HDMI so its getting decommissioned either way. I have noticed a few good sales on some Denon mid level AVRs that seem to be rather well equipped in the $700-$800 range. Anyone have much luck with Denon? Thanks for any input.
  2. Speaking of movies with sweet sound effects, I watched "The Island" last night and was very impressed with the sound effects , not a bad movie either. I am very happy with the new settings , and plan to keep those for movies. Every so often I feel like the bass is kicking in too soon, or that there is a low tone when I didnt expect there to be one, but I may just need to adjust my sub manually.
  3. I did not completly throw out the YPAO settings, My distances where within a half inch of the mics position after pulling out a tape measure . I set the mic in the middle of the rectangular room , at about 4' off the ground, which is my favorite listening position , and most of the distances varied from 9-11' from the mics position. I left that alone, but will experiment more with positioning in the future.(and will pick up an SPL meter and learn to use it.)
  4. I have been reading through all the posts (most of which is over my head) and decided to try some of the ideas youve talked about here, My original settings had the front 3 channels set to large and the back 2 RS7s set to small. I set the rears to large and turned the level up on the middle RC7, with the crossovers set to 60hz. Using material from Lord of the Rings 3, Fantastic4, and Master and Commander. It was a more loud ,brash booming type of sound dialogue was too low, but when it was loud, it was very loud, almost noisy and hard on the ears. It would be the kind of experience most shoppers watching a bose demo at BB would be incined to buy, but i know it wasnt right. I drove 3 hours to the nearest Klipsch dealer for a demo, and purchased most of the same equipent I demoed (taking under consideration the room acoustics would be different) so I knew I could do better. I then decided to try the THX settings talked about here, I set all speakers to small , crossovers at 80hz, reset the levels back to the original settings, and resampled the same material, it was a complete change, very unexpected, the dialogur was clear and sharp, the LFE was thunderous and deep, well defined, I actually had to turn the sub down a bit, cause it was shaking things I didnt want shaking. The definition from each channel was intense. I was very pleased with the results, the only changes made since then was turning up the levels to the rears a bit. thanks for the suggestions
  5. I wish I had a neighbor or friend that enjoys the extreme HT experience like so many of us do here. I havent had the pleasure of listening to a high end system to compare and learn from. I go to Tweeter from time to time and try to compare there higher end gear. Every time I ask a question here I learn so much , I will spend some time trying out a few variables that were shown here and see what my ears tell me. Oh yeah one more thing, i have my RS7s in the rear corners at the cieling angled down towards the middle of the room. If I were to add 2 more speakers, say like 2 RB-75s would it be correct to move the RS7s to more of a mid room position , and place the 75s in the rear? Thanks for the info.
  6. Thanks for the great ideas, but I was very curious what is actually happening when I make the switch from small to large? Is that just a change in crossover frequency? I have a rectangle shaped room, about 23deep, by 16wide, but it is 75 % open in the back, I am working on ways to close that off but for now it just has to stay open.
  7. Hey guys , the newness of the system has finally wore off and Im getting the itch again (my wife is very afraid) I am still quite the amature. Anyhow, I have been trying to improve my HT through its settings and speaker placement. I have always used the Yammys YPAO mic to set the system up, but I feel like im robbing myself of a better understanding of my system. I do not know why my rears (RS-7s) are set to small? I never seem to have the center(RC-7) at the right level to get the dialogue loud enough to hear whispers, but not have to turn the volume down for an explosion. Then theres the sub which has adjustments on the rear but I believe uses the recievers crossover. My next purchase is going to be a middle rear to bump the HT up to 6.1 , and another sub. I will probably get a duplicate sub, but I am a bit unsure of the rear speaker? I have been reading through these forums for hours now, because I always try to learn as much as I can before I ask any dumb questions, lol. But honestly an explanation of crossover levels and speaker size , and a recomendation for a rear would be appreciated.

Ive always viewed Klipsch as "that"speaker. I wonder how many have switched to Klipsch because of all those things you mentioned?
  9. It looks to be compatible. I have never used a wide screen computer monitor, do you have the bars on top or sides ever ? Or what about gaming with a wide screen LCD? I know my widescreen TV has the bars in standard definition is this an issue with a monitor ?
  10. Strange double post ? Anyhow yes I looked at the Dell you are speaking of, it really looks nice, I wonder if i would need anything extra to use the widescreen ? I would like to find out more info on this monitor, if my Vid card will support it (Nvidia 5600FX)
  11. Well I picked up a Samsung 193p+ with some high specs and a hefty price but there was a refund. Anyway the picture was beautiful, and I loved it until I tried to load my first game! I had nothing but problems, couldnt get Battlefield 2 to run, and many other problems occured , including thier magictune software that came so highly rated? In fact once loaded I had lockups left and right. I used a DVI cable, for the digital improvements. But after 9hrs, and almost 2 hours of Samsung phone tech support, I decided that this shouldnt be so much trouble, and decided to take it back.(I also noticed I want a bigger screen size. Anyone have issues when switching to LCD

  13. thanks for the info, I have done much research and surfing to find out the three biggies are Contrast ratio/response time/and brightness. All that being said Im down to 2 monitors to decide from lol. Help me compare these two will ya. #1 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1099390028727&type=product&skuId=6988307&tab=6&productCategoryId=cat01011 and #2 http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=329351&pfp=BROWSE sorry couldnt figure out how to link it direct. Anyhow it looks like one has great contrast (1000:1) but has low brightnes levels. and the other has average contrast and high brightness. While both have supurb response times 8ms for sammy, and 12ms for sony.

    Lcd monitors

Im in the market to replace my 19" CRT with a 19" LCD. I usually go with quality and warranty over price but it doesnt hurt to find a good deal. If anyone has some suggestions and or advice Im all ears. I notice the aspect ratios widely differ, some have only analog conections and some have digital also. Then theres the widescreen prospect also. As you can see I do not know much about the LCD displays, but could use the room back on my desk. I am also an avide online gamer, and Ive heard LCDs have not been great for gaming in the past? I have always used KDS monitors because of thier awesome warranty, which comes in handy if there is an issue, and with LCD i hear about pixel loss and burnout? So please feel free to edjucate me, Thanks
  15. Well since noody replyed I went out and got one, thank God cause it was the last, they are sold out in the first week. It was so easy to program the macros and the logitec firmware. I think I spent about 30 min. and had the entire system setup, including Tivo and dvr. And all for about a third of the price of the pronto models. It even allows u to load pics and backgrounds into the full color LCD screen from your pc.
