  1. I use a Denon 2803 with my kg 3.5's and 5.2's and like the matchup. Very detailed with a good sound stage and will carry a lot of different styles of music. Mine was on closeout at the beginning of the year for $425 so used should go for less, and the 1803 should even be cheaper. Since receivers usually last a long time, you might want to consider these because they also have full 5.1 HT capabilities. This would give you upgrade options for a HT setup down the road as your budget permits. With the Denon you might have to teak the treble a bit for classical.
  2. Well, yes and no. I've only been active for a short while, but I was dropping in for a look see for several months before I registerd. From my observations a lot of first timers will post their question regardles of content to 2 Channel because it's the most active. I'm glad to see that they always receive a warm welcome. Friendships do form so you do get a lot of off topic stuff, but that leads to a growth of community and keeps people with real skills and knowledge around so they are available to us to help answer our questions. I, for one, do try to post in the relevant forum, but I think some of the categories need reworking. For example, DVD,Music etc. seems to be almost solely about movies. That's why there are so many music posts in 2 Channel. To my mind Speaker Upgrades and Technical Questions should be combined. But I go on and on so let me close with this trenchant observation: Tighty Whities Rule!
  3. Am I the only one. It's seems like I can't go for more then a week or two without throwing one of their cd's on. They've been described as flamenco/jazz. Even though my tastes are mostly rock and blues these people feed my sole.
  4. I'm runing a Denon 2803 and find it very detailed. Many others on this forum really like Nad. It's all personal preference though. Take some time to visit a few stores and audition the ones you've narrowed your choice down to. For example, some people also find Nad to "uncolored" or flat or neutral. Let your ears be your guide.
  5. Ugly looking mother but they are supposed to sound sweet. Never heard one and for that price I never will. Personal peeve. What is it with those ebay seller clowns who are always bragging that they didn't have speakers but they plugged the amp receiver in and yes all the lights lit up. I wonder how many collective vintage electronics are cooked by these guy over the course of a year.
  6. Forty Four! YOu call that old! I've got corns older then that. Happy birthday Craig.
  7. If you're looking for the Denon 3803 check Tweeters. My local Tweeters was still carrying that model as recently as two months ago.
  8. Welcome. We've got to do something about that receiver though. I'm thinking used Denon 1803 or maybe even an uptodate cd player. Would probably depend upon whether you'll be going two channel or home theater (with 5 kids I'm thinking probably home theater). Let's give this man a few suggestions shall we?
  9. That's funny when I recently got my 5.2's one of the tweeters was also missing a phase plug. I could see the leftover glue but no plug so this must happen a lot. Called Klipsch parts and they will only sell me a whole tweeter, not the plug. Re the crossover do a search at upper right hand corner on 5.5's. One fellow here did new crossovers for these and he was also amazed that there are two different crossovers in the same speakers. By the way he has a parts list and schematics if you want to upgrade yours. He says he liked the way his turned out. Thanks for the info on the rack.
  10. Congrats!. Thought you would hear a difference. Still interested in a a/b comparison after you 've played with them for a while. Also, where'd you get the tv stand and how much. I'm running out of room for my gear.
  11. Pics ok but I would be very interested in haring how much better, if that's the case, that they sound compared to the 3.2's. You'll hve to pry the 3.5's from my cold dead hands but to me the 5.2's are definetly better!
  12. Our loss is her gain. Congratulations!
  13. IMO with the two active woofers they will be just a bit less smooth, an atribute I often associate with jazz, but again you should see a big improvement in all types of music over your 3.2's. Let's us hear your own views/analysis once you've have them up and running. By the way, may not be same for 5.5's but my 5.2's work best not towed in, seven feet apart in placement, and listening position two feet from back of wall.
  14. Geez William now I have a headache!
  15. It started out innocently enough. I began to think at parties now and then -- to loosen up. Inevitably, though, one thought led to another, and soon I was more than just a social thinker. I began to think alone -- "to relax," I told myself -- but I knew it wasn't true. Thinking became more and more important to me, and finally I was thinking all the time.> I began to think on the job. I knew that thinking and employment don't mix, but I couldn't stop myself. I began to avoid friends at lunchtime so I could read Thoreau and Kafka. I would return to the office dizzied and > confused, asking, "What is it exactly we are doing here?" Things weren't going so great at home either. One evening I had turned off the TV and asked my husband about the meaning of life. Hespent that night at his mother's. I soon had a reputation as a heavy thinker. One day the boss called me in. He said, "Skippy, I like you, and it hurts me to say this, but your> thinking has become a real problem. If you don't stop thinking on the job, you'll have to find another job." This gave me a lot to think about. I came home early after my conversation with the boss. "Honey," I confessed, "I've been thinking..." I know you've been thinking," he said, "and I want a divorce!" "But Honey, surely it's not that serious." "It is serious," he said, lower lip aquiver. "You think as much as college professors, and college professors don't make any money, so if you keep on> thinking, we won't have any money!" "That's a faulty syllogism," I said impatiently, and he began to cry. I'd had enough. "I'm going to the library," I snarled as I stomped out the door. I headed for the library, in the mood for some Nietzsche, wih NPR > on the radio. I roared into the parking lot and ran up to the big glass doors ... they didn't open. The library was closed. To this day, I believe that a Higher Power was looking out for me that night. As I sank to the ground, clawing at the unfeeling glass, whimpering for> Zarathustra, a poster caught my eye. "Friend, is heavy thinking ruining> your life?" it asked. You probably recognize that line. It comes from the> standard Thinker's Anonymous poster. Which is why I am what I am today: a> recovering thinker. I never miss a TA meeting. At each meeting we watch a non-educational video; last week it was "Porky's." Then we share experiences about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting. I still have my job, and things are a lot better at home.> Life just seemed ... easier, somehow, as soon as I stopped thinking. Soon,> I will be able to vote Republican. _________________________________________________________________ > From must-see cities to the best beaches, plan a getaway with the Spring Travel Guide!
  16. Sorta can't argue. I paid $160 for my 2.1's.
  17. Clicked on my email and up pops a message from Klipsch about a sale. Yea I say! Visions of $25 Lascala's $75 RF 7's quickly dance through my head. Open up the message and, oh nooooooo, it for Promedia!. Already got Promedia. BUMMER.
  18. This is a first, I may actually be qualified to answer this question in a technical sense because I own 3.5's and 5.2's which are pretty close to what your comparing.. First the tractix horn is a smidge smoother then the older kg horns so you will get a little better rolloff in the 5.5's. This will fill in the mids. However, the 5.2's you listenend to have a large passive woofer, while the 5.5's have two active woofers. The difference will be most noticable in the basss. I would suspect that going to the 5.5's will get you equall detail in sound, a less raspy high, more solid mids and active bass. These will be rock and roll machines and a little less satisfying thaen the 5.2's you heard in softer music or jazz. Everbody who owns 5.5's in this forum loves them. It's definetly a worthwhile upgrade.
  19. Ahh nothing like stalking wild gear in the woods. We're talking gear not deer. How about it, what was your best score. $50 Khorns at a church potluck dinner, Fisher tube receiver from roadside trash, $25 Carver amp on Ebay. Gear only, not the Rembrandt you snagged for $3 bucks at a yard sale. Well, how about it!
  20. Good advice and thanks for the heads up.For what it's worth I urge everybody to keep their antivirus up to snuff. Was attacked just last week by a new version of the blaster worm. Norton's caught it for me. If you're running broadband set Live Update by default. If you're on dialup like me update manually every couple of days.
  21. For shame all of you. If I wasn't laughing so hard I'd be wagging my finger at you guys. Man still needs advice. Anyone?
  22. Stl you are my man! After I get the schematic I'll do the math as best I can and then drop you a pm so I know I'm not completely out ofline. Thanks again.
  23. Ok guys, Greg still needs an answer to his question. Anybody in the forum know anything about record stores in that town. One presumes if there's a college in town there will be a good record store nearby.
  24. Thanks STL. Should I get new circuit boards at the same time so the speakers aren't out or service while I'm doing the new crossovers? Also, if the specs don't match up exactly do I need some sort of a meter to take some of the windings off the inductors?
  25. I was raised on the spread out sound and hey, there's nothing like five part harmony to end the day. Sweet!
