Roy has been working on ideas on how to show, with real-world examples, of differences in direct radiator vs. horn-loaded subwoofer design, performance, and sound. He has come up with a way to demonstrate in a concrete way how these basic subwoofer designs differ in sound and distortion (among other things). How is he going to do this? He is having his team build four subwoofer cabinets with different design elements. An evolution of subwooferage (an industry term) you will be able to hear for yourselves with their corresponding pros and cons. We also learned today that Jim has been mining the archives for never-before-seen PWK drawings and other tidbits dating back to the '40s where Mr. K was working on the bottom end to offer "full range." As you know, he could initially do this with the original 2 way Klipsch horn. Apparently, PWK was experimenting with porting/venting on his X-3 prototype and Jim will point that out. You will also see some concepts PWK was working on very early on with large horn-loaded speaker designs, and large in comparison to his Klipschorn. Mike Dyer, the official Klipsch Heritage Brand Ambassador for Klipsch Group, Inc. is developing a presentation to put this evolution into perspective. He might even be able to show you some things that he has Roy doing to his AK-3 Khorns that will be offered to all Klipschorn owners, Travis

Roy @Chief bonehead has added an extra half day to the class: Half-Day added for Friday, November 10th starting at 1:00 PM The Subfest '23 Event scheduled for November 11th, with pre-registration on Friday, November 10th from 1 to 5, (dinner starting at 6:00 P.M. cooked by Chief Bonehead) has been extended with a half-day on Friday November 10th. Chief Bonehead announced at our latest planning meeting today that he has been "cooking" up some great stuff for this class and he cannot fit it into one full day, so we are going to start the course at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the Klipsch Factory, so please adjust your travel plans accordingly. Don't panic if airlines, work, etc. won't allow you to arrive until Friday evening, Roy says what he has planned for Friday afternoon is like spaghetti sauce or Texas Chili - "it's better the next day." We will be repeating that segment during the following day. We are looking forward to seeing you at this event. Sincerely, The Subfest '23 Planning Team* *Roy Delgado, Jr., Bill Hendrix, Mark Fragnito, Mike Dyer, Jim Hunter, and Trav

Cornwall BE Crossover Help with Atlas Replacements
Travis In Austin replied to impact's topic in Technical/Restorations
@Deang and @Chief bonehead Dean or Roy, I obviously don’t have the technical expertise to answer this question and I don’t know if the Atlas speakers are parts that are still available from Klipsch Parts. Dean can you PM him with some direction? I suspect that he is in another country, and English is second language so the normal options may be limited for him, if’s that not correct, apologize to him in advance. Travis -

How far apart are the se cities. I see stuff get posted in Austin and also Houston and Dallas (3 hour drive) but the location is clear where the speakers are actually located.Travis -
Reasons Why This Is Technical/Restoration Section
Travis In Austin replied to MicroMara's topic in Technical/Restorations
Not planning on removing any older DIY, upgrade threads, I’m planning on trying to move those all to an archived section where they will be available to view but not respond to (it creates confusion as to what’s currently allowed, what isn’t). That’s a project for a different day. There isn’t any problem at all with refinishing or cabinet repair topics. There have been several since this thread was posted and pinned. Yes. Unfortunately it became a game with some to respond to any post about a set of older speakers to slip in a comment about capacitors or networks from 3rd party vendors. These responses had nothing whatsoever to do with the original posts. This was after Klipsch went to considerable time and expense to develop, test, measure kits for many of the Heritage networks and keeping the original sound along with approving an authorized supplier of those kits and an authorized rebuilder. Unfortunately, several attempts to quell the “games” of slipping in unsolicited gratuitous recommendations for 3rd party products failed. It was just simply easier to prohibit discussion about non-approved 3rd party vendors on Klipsch’s Forum. You are absolutely correct, PWK would not be pleased, but not in the sense you mean. The historical record is clear (documents, letters, Dope From Hope articles, etc.) that PWK would have gone ballistic about vendors claiming to have “improved” balancing network designs, capacitor kits that “meet factory specs”, offered build your own speaker kits that used the name of two of this trademarked speakers and many other examples. In short, he would have never allowed a speaker manufacturer/competitor’s speakers to be discussed or their notions of what an upgrade or improvement might be to his designs. PWK designed, measured/tested his own upgrades and offered them. Nothing he offered in terms of an update/improvement/upgrade came without a detailed explanation of the engineering and testing that led to the change, and what the results of the changes were. Klipsch continues with this upgrade philosophy as seen with the recent Forte III to IV kits. I think you will see even more upgrades coming from Klipsch. If people want to pursue a different path on what they do with their speakers that’s fine. Do it on the DIY platforms. if people have inherited or purchased an older set of speakers they want to restore to original, they are most welcome to post here and they will get the help to accomplish that. I’m sorry to hear of your disappointment, so I have provided some of the background to help shed some light on the decision. -

Klipsch&McLaren, The Legends Series, I like it!
Travis In Austin replied to KT88's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
They sold out of the Limited Edition MCL 905 in two months, probably most to Europe, but who knows. They were $16,000 a pair. They have sold thousands of other co-branded products like Lou Reed ear buds, and they even had some of those left over at the end. It’s hard to measure success of a limited/signature series product by what excess inventory they discount at the end. I think Corey managed to get the last 3 pairs of Forte’s, but who knows how many they made and sold before that? McLaren is a car company that has a racing division (F1 and GT). Their cars sell for $250K up to near 1 million. They make about 4,000 cars a year, by hand. I think they announced their 20,000th car made about 2 years ago. Papaya Orange (did someone call that yellow?) is trademarked (yes you can trademark a color) and is well known to those that travel in those circles. The McLaren dealership I was in had all of the smaller products in stock and on display, I don’t know if that was true everywhere. It is for certain a very exclusive market, and an uber luxury brand. -
New Heritage Subwoofer - Any Early Photos?
Travis In Austin replied to Heritage_Head's topic in Subwoofers
There ya go. As you say Those are working prototypes but only two of the four. Grandpa and Papa. Momma and Baby are in the flyer (my designations, working titles). Roy and his team have been working on them constantly since then. Travis -

Nope, it’s all top secret right now. I had to pry them out of a photo for the banner. I don’t know what we will be able to photograph when we are there. -

I think @richieb he was referring to the sponsorship of McLaren by Klipsch, that ended last season. -

Travis In Austin replied to KT88's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
Yes the Klipsch sponsorship of McLaren, officially ended, the McLaren branded products were launched in the last year of their association. The limited edition (Was it 905s) sold out quickly. What’s on the website is what’s left. Travis -

Hey DoubleJ, glad to see I’m not the only one who has Doubter Cap syndrome across a wide variety of projects. The publishers and the printing project are separate from the Museum, so I don’t have a way to access any of that information. I would reply to the email (if allowed), or click the email link and send your new address so they can confirm. They are very friendly folks and I’m sure would be happy to answer or get you to the right place. Travs

That’s what I initially thought, but when it comes to the mixing engineer, and to a lesser extent the mastering engineer, there is a debate going on right now as to what if any impact the acoustics of the rooms where this is done (control room of studio, or smaller dedicated mixing room, or even a home studio) and the monitors used result in better/worse overall recordings. Floyd Toole discusses this as part of his Circle of Confusion, in his book and his presentations, and he has been advocating for standards for both room acoustics and studio monitors. However, he says that more research needs to be done. Sean Olive has also written about this, and the topic pops up at AES from time to time as to whether standards would improve the overall quality of recordings. As I say, it’s a matter of debate at AES, the Academy of Recording Sciences and elsewhere as to what, if any impact standards would have.

I worked at Ocean Way in Los Angeles, back when it was Western and United, but the large control room monitors were all Allen Sides’ horn based speakers. What did/does Ocean Way in Nashville have for main and near field monitors?

HELP, MY 1980's Heresy stopped Working.
Travis In Austin replied to jackTaylor's topic in General Klipsch Info
Let’s go step by step, figure out if it’s an amp/preamp problem which @billybob is checking on with left to right wire switch. If it’s the AMP/Receiver then we can see what the labels/SN say and we can tell him how old and whether they are good to go or if he may want to consider having them rebuilt. Travis
