I am contemplating get a medium format camera from the prosumer market... as I have always wanted a 8x10 camera, but the medium format Digital cameras have gotten so good and are  'relatively' affordable now.

does anyone have experience with them? I can not really see a downside to getting one if my main point is still life, nature and portrait.

I am looking at a GFX 50s II or GFA 100s II

I have a lot of experience with medium format, but like a lot of things, decades ago, and in an all but gone format.

The Fujifilm digitals you are looking at seem to have been well reviewed for many years, and their optics seem to be well regarded.

Back in the day, 2 1/4 sq was the go to for portrait, landscape, nature (flowers & bugs) with a macro at 1:1 for life size images. You could crop and blow up to 16 x 20 easily, but we did some at 30 x 30, 30 x 40 cropped. Hasselblad for 2.25 square, and also some Mamiya RB67 (6 x 7) with 220 film.

The difference between 35 and 120 was quite substantial. Shooting the same subject,  equivalent 35 mm film focal length lens, the same film to get the the best quality 16 x 20 we had a 4 x 5 inter-negative made from the 35, then they would blow up the inter-negative, that made it acceptable, but many times 11 x 14 was the max whereas 16 x 20 was pretty easy with 2.25 sq, or 6x7.

I messed around with a 4x5” view camera once, with a really nice Schneider lens, it was so much work. It’s just wasn’t worth the time and effort. If you need the bellows for field of view, architecture photos, the TS-tilt shift lenses got you close to that.

I just got my first pair Klipsch at 59 years old the Forte III SE delivered about 45 minutes ago. They are in perfect condition using a PrimaLuna Evo 300i with EL 34’s. My sources are SME10 TT and a streamer with a Schiit Bifrost 2 dac and a Nakamichi RX- 505 cassette deck. Also solid state Ayre V-3 newly restored and a Classe Cp-60 newly restored. I can’t wait to hear high powered solid state on these guys.
I’m blown away by the  huge soundstage the speakers make and they completely disappeared and I just plopped them down! And I was always told stay away from Klipsch because they are to bright and fatiguing and honky sounding. They are not anything like that whatsoever smooth open punchy and incredibly realistic. I still love my Hales Design Group speakers and my Sonus Faber Extremas. These two speakers I mentioned are a lot more money than the Forte III’s but the Forte’s are 90% or more of said speakers. It’s a totally different listening experience. I’m just thrilled to death over the build quality and the sound of these speakers. Klipsch has a new fan.

These guys are incredible for the money, as far as value better than my more expensive speakers. Too bad it took 59 years to get some. And I was told the Forte IV’s are  better than these, wow. Anyway nice to join the group, it’s going to be a long fun night. Already lining up records I want to hear on these beast. This is like having a band in your room. I feel like I’m 18 again when I bought my first stereo. Sorry for the high school reply, I’m just ecstatic over these guys. INCREDIBLE SPEAKERS!!!!🤘🏼🤘🤘🏾

And they will grown on you from there.

Liked that write up, been there.

The human brain is an amazing thing.  If you spend enough money on something that's supposed to make something sound better, it will.

Well that’s what the science says, probably at least 100 AES articles on it under the psychoacoustics section.

Speaker cables can make a big difference. Try Belden 9497 (cheap) then try some upmarket Nordost, for example: if you hear no difference, it's time to sell your system and purchase some bluetooth speaker.

That’s true, if you are able to hear and pick the difference in a controlled, blind test.

PWK, Heyser, Toole all agree that measurements don’t tell you everything, but on evaluation of audio, sighted tests don’t tell you anything.

  5. McIntosh MC901 single channel dual mono amplifier. 1 mono output is SS 600W for LF section, other output in s 300W valve for HF section.

    https://www.mcintoshlabs.com/products/amplifiers/MC901

“Vacuum tubes do not perform at their best when they are amplifying lower frequencies that are not being used by the loudspeaker. With the MC901, the vacuum tube amp will not be burdened with low end reproduction as the solid state section will drive these frequencies. The two amplifier sections of the MC901 are designed to work together in a synergistic relationship and are specifically engineered to assure that each section only amplifies its intended frequencies. Each amplifier section has its own discrete power supply so neither siphons power or performance away from the other. All of this results in easy bi-amping with unparalleled performance and sound reproduction from your speakers.”

  6. What kind of bar? Have photos of area?

The White Water Tavern in Little Rock has Heresy’s (they are rated one of the top Dive Bars in USA by Esquire).

I have seen everything in commercial bars, restaurants, with some very creative arrangements.

@bhendrix has a business partner he help set up his beer garden with Klipsch, but not Heritage due to size of venue need more portability and power handling.

I have a Scarlett 4i4 that I could use that would be an ideal signal path, but, I like to do my comparisons in real world settings.  A lot of people use the 1/8 output from the laptop into their system for everyday listening. (Or worse yet, Bluetooth!) I use the 1/8 output on my office system right into a set of The Fives and it works well... but I don't do critical listening there.  I tried the usb be from my laptop to The Fives and I didn't like it as well as the 1/8 to the RCA input.

All things considered, both sets of speakers were given the same mediocre signal.

My current and last laptop don’t have any 1/8” in/out, only USB or Bluetooth. I have tried going from 1/8 out on Desktop to input of the Klipsch powered speakers in the office. I do prefer the USB from desktop to speaker much more than Bluetooth for sure.

  8. This is an awesome thread, thanks for starting it. So since you are a stem teacher I will post some articles on A/B from AES (some science for a STEM teacher).

With speakers it’s more difficult than components, because it near impossible to do a “blind comparison. For most people it’s going to have to be a sighted comparison. Studies (peer reviewed) on this show there is a sighted bias. However, it sounds like you going for a subjective personal preference, along with pointing out the subjective differences so it’s no big deal I wouldn’t think.

The speakers need to be spl matched as the science is pretty clear that the average person (in blind tests) will nearly always prefer the louder speaker if not volume matched. I will post the studies on this and the YouTube videos where the author of the studies discusses them. I think the ideal is matched to within +/- 0.10 dB of each other. (That’s what Roy does for classes when they are comparing on speaker to another.

PWK did A/B after doing all his curves and measurements. Just about any modification he was considering he would A/B after careful measurements. He would discuss this in Dope From Hope editions and @Chief bonehead Roy has a few stories about PWK teaching him to do the same thing.

PWK personally studied many, many aspects of loudspeakers, and specifically, he studied whether they were audible, if audible were they “pleasing/preferred” vs. objectional/unsatisfying. He used the phrase “not a dime’s worth of difference” in describing what the results of certain changes were.

I would join in the fun, but don’t have two sets of speakers to easily place sided by side at the moment, but will do so at the first opportunity.

    PWK would have loved this.

I've never understood how such a scam works. What, you call the guy and he says, "Haha, fooled you! They really don't exist. Don't you feel stupid?" What's the point?

The main theme in these scams is that the person you are dealing with insists on a form of payment where there is no recourse because it’s a cash equivalent - Western Union (or equivalent), Pay Pal friends and family (IIRC), any type of a cash app. There is no recourse for the person sending the money (like a credit card) and no tracking, like with a check.

    Hi Dave,

The higher the load resistance, the more the external cable capacitance will interfere with HF response. I like the line out to pass very sharp 10k square waves.

    Cheers,

    M

Wait. That’s engineering and technical language from someone knowledgeable.

Can I infer from that, that preamp design can in fact make interconnects have an impact on sound?

In other words, depending on the preamp, and the cable capacitance, there is a measurable difference on the high frequency response?

Don’t care if it’s audible at this point, just that it can be measured.
