    Hello all,

this is my first post to the forum.

I recently acquired my first set of quality stereo speakers … in an unusual form factor:

klipsch heresy wedge monitors , HIE crossovers. All original.

    3743 and 3745

    k-42-EV

    k-55-M

    k-77-M

I got them for a deal , one works great… the other worked great for a moment…

it started cutting out at lower volumes , and distorting at higher .
At first I thought it could be failing caps , but I’ve read some good feedback on removing the zener diodes from circuit. I’ll be trying that today unless I am advised not to here .

i am so eager to get these going , I’m sure the information is out there but I thought I’d make this post and see if one of you more knowledgeable people could point me in the right direction and get this going faster than I could researching between jobs.

if I could retain the original caps by removing the zener diodes from circuit that would be ideal. If not I’ll probably recap both speakers and sell the original caps that test in spec. Yes I know it will eventually need to be recapped but they are expensive , especially for the HIE one.

additionally - I want to use these for home stereo use mostly, so the boxes should go. Yes it is sad separating these drivers from their original cases … but to any of the offended I’ll say this : there’s nothing more fitting for these than an act of heresy.

i am 24 and pretty tight w money so I’ll probably use a cheaper wood just to get them going and rehaul the project again in later years .

i see some talk about converting HIE crossovers to AA style . If anyone could speak to the advantages of this - it is unclear to me as of now. I can’t have opinions about what style I prefer since I haven’t heard them. And I am still learning about what a “super heresy” is. Since I’ll be building new boxes for these , anything is possible . I’ll definitely need to implement some more low end eventually , whether that be the traditional separate sub, port, or something more innovative.

I’ll be selling the wedge monitor boxes , if I could do this to fund the materials for building new boxes that would be great… I don’t have much room for storage . If anyone wanted to give any thoughts of what the boxes are worth , or the speakers as a whole , I can’t find much price references within recent years . Inflation moves fast these days .

anyways , I’m normally hesitant to jump into forums but this one seems great from what I’ve seen . Excited to be here hope you have a great day.

@Deang might have some input on the Zeners and crossovers that would be helpful.

Yup, seems like a bad tweeter.   Swapping the tweeter did nothing.  However, I also ran a few tests with a multimeter.

    1. I Set it to ohms/resistance. Disconnected the wires from the crossover to the tweeter and put meter leads on each wire.  I should read some resistance across the tweeter; less than say, 10 ohms. If the meter doesn't read anything, the voicecoil is open and the tweeter is bad.  I did not get a reading.  So tweeter is bad right?  Probably.

Poor pup he clearly thinks you bought him a dog house and he is thinking "if you think I can fit in that you really need to lay of the bourbon."

Looks like you have factory grills. I had 90ish (they didn't have records for the S/N I had due to the merge of computer data it was their best date estimate).

  4. I have bought 3 pairs, one for Khorns and they went with the Khorns, another pair for some 1990 LS, this was in '04, I didn't like that batch because it looked like they had white cracks and '90 LS had no grills, so I got a different run. I still have a brand new pair in the box from Klipsch.

But the most recent pair was about 10 years ago so I have no idea other than what I have seen people post.

New years party was with 2 Yamaha MSR 400 speakers and a Yamaha active sub, that was more than enough. But how do the RF62’s + sub compare with such an active system?

As mentioned in an earlier response, RF62 with a sub will excel over the MSR 400 PA system. However, the RF 82 would be breathtaking, as would RF7 III.

What the distance between the L and R Speaker?

Any update (if there is any) about these subs will be apriciate

Um, not since the Bonehead Class in October and those threads.

Roy is doing another Bonehead Class in March as part of the Birthday Bash, and the subwoofers and some other Heritage “advancements” are being discussed as his topics. I expect another round of updates, refinements and announcements at that time.

Hello all, this is my first post.  I found a very nice looking pair of 1984 La Scalas for sale nearby.  I gaduated high school in 1984, and a buddy of mine back then (much wealthier than I) had a pair of La Scalas at the time.  I have wanted La Scalas ever since.  So, I was ready to make an offer today, but upon demo one speaker had a silent tweeter and the other had a silent squawker.  The crossover is the often maligned AL Network.

Since the speakers are 40 years old.

I was planning to replace the crossovers [Moderator Edit].

But I was hoping to not replace them immediately, and certainly was hoping to not replace any of the drivers.  The squawkers are the 55M.  The tweeters are K77 but I forgot to take pictures of them.  Everything looks original.   I think my only option would be to replace the crossovers and all four speakers.  Or I could roll the dice and just replace the crossovers and see if that fixes the problem.

Q1: What are the odds that each AL crossover network is to blame for one driver not working?

Q2: If I do replace everything but the woofers, what is the best bang for the buck option for this vintage cabinet, i.e. matching drivers and crossover networks?

Q3: I think a reasonable price offer should be based on needing all four speakers and two crossovers.  Any thoughts on if that is north or south of 1K?

Any other tips or advice appreciated.

    Mike

Welcome to the forum, I edited the part about unsupported non-authorized networks, left the rest as is.

Q1: One in a million (that it’s a complete failure of a part on the network leading to a different driver not working on each speaker).  It’s very, very common to have the problem with loose connections on the crossover networks and/or driver terminals.

You heard a sound in 1984 (same thing for me in ‘78), you are going to want what you heard in ‘84.

Bad connections are very common, so use that to your advantage on the offer.

We can help you isolate the problems when you get them home. If the drivers need new diaphragms, where and how to replace. We will want photos of rear of drivers.

@Deang is an authorized rebuilder of XOs and can tell you the good bad and the ugly on every variation that was used in the LS.

I think you have a bad tweeter diaphragm, and a bad squawker connection. But buy based on needing total replacements. Which as you point out is four drivers.

It probably going to be that you don’t need to replace XO’s right away, you get all drivers working, and then you can figure out what to do on the XOs.

Q3 based on what Dean and others tell you on what would cost of diaphragms, XO build you can judge from there.

looking forward to hearing how this progresses.

What does that have to do with OP's old question about a bass bin comparison in where one that generates distortion and one that controls Inter dist?

I removed the double post, there is a thread on this with same post, I took this one out.

If possible, please help to pass the message to the Onkyo team.

The obvious fix is to do the Dirac Live correction as the very last stage, after all signal summing and re-routing is done.

Hi Keks, welcome to the Forum. The Klipsch Forum is just Klipsch, even though Onkyo is another subsidiary and f the same parent company.

I will pass this along to the person at Klipsch (I’m a volunteer moderator not associated with the Company) who I think can pass it along to the right people. If I receive a response I will post it here and/or send you a PM.

Thanks for your detailed explanation of the bug so that you if we can get this in the right hands they can do something constructive.

What should I be looking at, just amps? I have a Wiim Pro Plus on the way to help with connectivity.

I have a Wiim Pro Plus on the way to help with connectivity, what would you recommend for an amp?

Heard nothing but great things about Wiim Pro Plus. I think I'm going to order one (after you get yours, haha).

You can get by with just an Amp can't you (volume control on the Wiim). I think you can look at any good solid-state amp (Wiim has one don't they?). Don't know how loud you listen, music, but 50 watts a side will be plenty.

I’ve got something very similar in which i’m having a hard time discerning EXACTLY what I have here. Seems to be a Klipsch Kit from 1956 marking w/ Klipsh Crossover and Hi-End University Speakers.

Everything is in great shape and sounds awesome. I’ve just struggled on the research.

    Has

    University C15W of a Beast

    University Type Mid T

    University SaHF

It has some Klipsh tags, but nothing thorough. I understand this is a Kit though.

I’ve had this for a while and anything you Klipsh geniuses can give me on this ismost appreciated!

    Here are some Pics

    Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, I’m sure with the Museum Curator, Jim Hunter @JRH returns from the holidays he will be all over this one.

  12. The last tour I saw them in Austin (great venue layout), Houston, Denver, and Las Vegas (where we had best seats)

This tour, because of AARP advance sales, and 6 of us working together on seats, we got- Houston, Denver, Las Vegas and Vancouver.

Mick is 80, I figure this is their last rodeo, or close to it.
