  1. Yes, I did get them! They will need some repair work on the veneer edges - but overall they were in good shape. The kids will miss these speakers, since they were primarily used for their TV games. The bad news is that I won't get to hook them up for a few months while I wait for my new house to be finished and I get my room started... I can't wait!
  2. Fr= Frequency (Hz) AP= Area of Port VB= Volume of Cabinet VD= Volume of Port LD= Length of Port
  3. I'm using a BenQ for my theater and really do like it. I chose the DLP projection over the LCD, based on the quality and life span of the unit. A new DLP projector bulb, although expensive, will basically bring the unit "back to life" after the original bulb goes. An LCD projector does not seem to have the life span and/or ability to be made "fresh" with just the bulb replacement. BenQ had offered an extra bulb rebate when I purchased, so I'm ready with a spare when I need it. DVDs and HD cable programs are simply amazing through the DLP unit. Some have complained about DLP having a "rainbow" color effect in some areas of the screen (I'll let the others explain the true technical facts of what going on..) I'm able to ignore the minor details that rarely happen, and most other never notice at all. I only use my projector for the movies and HD... Non-HD broadcast is large, but not great to watch on the big screen. If your just starting, keep in mind the distance you will want from the screen. Even with HD, sitting closer than 12ft to an 8ft screen isn't going to work (except for the Computer Video games!).
  4. If you had bought $1,000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. With Enron, you would have $16.50 of the original $1,000.00. With Worldcom, you would have less than $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) one year ago, drank all the beer, then returned the cans for the 10-cent deposit (some states), you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle. This is a new retirement program, I call it the 401 Keg.
  5. If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. (Hardly seems worth it.) If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb. (Now that's more like it!) The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet. (O.M.G.!) A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes. (In my next life, I want to be a pig.) A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy.)(I'm still not over the pig.) Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Do not try this at home...... maybe at work.) The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head! off. ("Honey, I'm home. What the....?!") The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field. (30 minutes... lucky pig... can you imagine??) The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. (What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?) Some lions mate over 50 times a day. (I still want to be a pig in my next life...quality over quantity) Butterflies taste with their feet. (Something I always wanted to know.) The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue. (Hmmmmmm........) Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people. (If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?) Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump. (OK, so that would be a good thing....) A cat's urine glows under a black light. (I wonder who was paid to figure that out?) An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. (I know some people like that.) Starfish have no brains. (I know some people like that too.) Polar bears are left-handed. (If they switch, they'll live a lot longer.) Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (What about that pig??)
  6. I inquired once about a deal that seemed "too good"... and it was. Someone in the UK was trying to sell a car that I actually located in NY. The auction stated that it was guaranteed and backed up by eBay's Square Deal auction service, which he claimed was basically a $20k insurance policy. However, he wanted the funds sent direct via Western Union labeled as "gift" to avoid taxes. I found the vehicle on another auto-trader site and validated possession through the dealer that was trying to sell it for a significant amount more. This person didn't change the VIN or photos copied from the other site! Square Deal can be used as the deal moderator, but the money must go through them and they guarantee up to $200 not $20k. Recently, I've been contact via second chance offers after loosing an auction. It appears as if the winner backed out and the item is still for sale. However, this is another scam that only appears to be legit because of the eBay style email and linked pages sent for payments. EBay did send a warning notice to me before I had a chance to respond to the offer. Otherwise, I might have considered the deal. Interesting that this offer was also being sent from the UK...
  7. Tom, I did post on the "Show Your System Thread" on page 3. However, here is a link to more photos and details for those that haven't seen it. The big black subs in the front of the room are gone... didn't need them! http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=49550&forumID=71&catID=19&search=1&searchstring=&sessionID={BBCFAA90-B95F-49D9-A2FA-CFAB1409D71D}
  8. I've used the rope light under my raised floor... I think it looks great! I installed the outlet and dimmer switch in the closet. The only issue I have is the occasional sag or re-tensioning needed after one of the kids bumps or tugs the rope.
  9. I emailed this guy to get photos during the auction. He replied that they were "already boxed up" and couldn't take any pictures. I didn't bid.
  10. What about Up-Firing? Raised floor is 2x6 construction Glued to floor with PL. Double layer OSB glued to the 2x6s. Chamber created using cross-brace for correct volume with screws every 1.5 inches. Extra glue for air-tight enclosure along with a couple internal vertical braces. Dual port tubes sized and cut for 35Hz tuning. Great for Theater use...
  11. That would be cool... I just closed on some land yesterday and we plan to start building before the end of the year. I tried some things in this house to get an idea of what I can do in the next. We'll have to compare notes. John talked about talking a trip to Artos room in the next month or so... Any specific day of the week/time work best for you? Vince
  12. Damon, How often do you get into the Madison area? You should stop by and look at my room... My thought was that the framing around the tile would be more critical in terms of vibration/sound isolation. I decided to use the GridLock vinyl system in my theater area. Basically, the tiles are "locked" into place using a two-part tee that is screwed to the underside of the above floor joists. I also gained a couple of inches in ceiling height vs hanging the ceiling. The down side is, the grid cost much more that the tiles. I think the tiles have helped isolate my theater area from the rest of the house (big advantage for late movies without the kids) and the locked ceiling does not have the "flex-noise" of a traditional hung ceiling. Finally, I have the option of removing the tiles to repair/replace cables if needed.
  13. Gary, Please give us a full report after you pick them up! You've all heard the story of the soon to be x-wife selling her husband's Mercedes for $50 to send the cash to him and his mistress in some tropical climate... Bass656, I'm betting that you will have attached a permanent smile to Gary's face. I'm smiling just thinking about how happy he must be!
  14. I'm assuming that you have a source for purchasing a set of Fortes? If so, I would purchase them and listen to them for a while. Once you've logged some time with them, I would audition the RF series. If you prefer the RFs, you could easily get your money back on any Heritage speakers you've found for a reasonable price. If money is no issue and you have the space, get them both. Listen to them each for a couple weeks at a time and then report back on your findings. You could always find another room to spoil yourself in
  15. I walked in to hear a Michael Kelsey CD being played on the Klipschorns... Sounded incredible. Can someone tell which CD of his I was hearing? Thanx!
  16. We thought the same thing, so we asked one of the waiters if she was the owner. Apparently, she is a regular customer and not an owner. This was her first time performing there and she called this her "CD-Debut" party? Like I mentioned in the other thread, I was first confused, then I thought it was funny, and finally annoyed. I also feel that we would have all hung around a lot longer if Roger were singing.
  17. Part 2 I can honestly say that many of us would have stayed at the Jazz Kitchen if we had Roger singing instead of the poetry lady. It was interesting at first, became funny for a bit, then went into just annoying... Some of us thought it was some kind of bizarre tolerance test and became disappointed when the kazoos on the table were fake. I don't want to be too critical But, based on the massive exodus, I'm not quite sure how many appreciated the artistry. Our waiter could hardly contain himself. For those of you that missed Roger singing, I too will tell you that many a jaw dropped when he started! I can't wait to see how his room turns out once completed. (Roger, make sure you post some photos when you get this done.) He's got an awesome house and we all had a good time. Thanks again for sharing and for the hospitality! I had a great weekend... can't cover all the details, but have certainly learned a bunch and I hope to get the chance to do this again next year! Finally (for the Klipsch folks), I think many of us would love to see an outlet store or just the ability to purchase some shirts and stuff. I know I would have stuffed my trunk with a Pro-Media system and a pile of Klipsch Polos.
  18. Part 1 I too would like to extend a great big THANK-YOU to Trey and the Klipsch staff for a great time. They provided tour buses to the theater, lunch, diner, snacks and gifts! My plaque is already mounted! There was quite a bit of planning to set this up and a big thanks to the Klipsch employees that volunteered their Saturday to spend with us. The Engineering facility is very nice! I'm really glad that I was able to experience the different systems... I will definitely be upgrading my office PC sound system and K-horns have yet again been reinforced as a near-future goal. I was also impressed with the THX Sub. It was very cool to poke our noses around the theater. It would have been fun to start with the smaller theater and then move to the larger. Either way, I enjoyed peeking behind the curtain and experiencing a Klipsch pro-theater. Based on the sign-in sheet, it looks like a few of us took advantage of the complimentary movie later that night. Somehow we should all get a thank-you to the UA Theater... They also treated us to bagels and coffee! Can someone get the manager's email address?
  19. For those that haven't seen mine... Link to more: http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=49550&forumID=71&catID=19&search=1&searchstring=&sessionID={BBCFAA90-B95F-49D9-A2FA-CFAB1409D71D}
  20. Thanks for the visit JM! How can you not just love a woman that thinks like that! My wife falls asleep during movies... Maybe we should trade sub-woofers I'm glad you liked my "project" car. I don't think I should post auto photos on this forum... but I'll post a link for those interested. Basically it's a non-GM car with a GM (not my first choice) power plant. Like I said before, I've got a few hobbies and don't sleep much... Thanks again JM! Your a bad/good influence and you know my next HT project will be down the Heritage path Project Link: http://www.renegadehybrids.com/customer_files/Vince_Aman.html
  21. eq_shadimar: Thanks for the compliment! Rudy81: My screen is a manual 96 x 72 Draper Luma. With two small children, I thought it would be better to have a washable surface... just in case. Like I mentioned before, this was mostly an experiment in layout and acoustics. Therefore, I didnt want to spend a bunch of $$ on a glass-beaded electric screen. We plan to move/build in the very near future and this screen will most likely stay with the house. Im currently using a Lexicon MC-1 processor and an AMC Valve/Mosfet hybrid amp for my mains. An SAE amp powers the sub system and Im using an Adcom GFA 7000 & GFA 6000 for the surrounds. Im still in what I would like to call the early stages of tweaking and have yet to spend any real time analyzing the different amps individually. I also wanted to get an appropriate amount of time on the AMCs Russian tubes (4 x Svetlana 6550C) before deciding. So far, Im quite pleased with my first HT setup. I have yet to see a single clipping light or have any measurable heat generated from the components (except the warm tubes). Rudy, I really like your setup! I didnt think of using the Heresey/Forte combo for the side/rear channels HT #2 plans have been updated
  22. I purchased a PB12 for my wife & kid's HT a while back. The amplifier died within the first couple hours of use. I had some trouble getting the warrantee work done because I didn't purchase from this "authorized" dealer... I took almost 2 months to get repaired and I was told that the next time it would be at my cost. However, it has worked fine ever since. It does a fairly nice job of filling the room and seems to have enough adjustability. I honestly haven't evaluated its tone quality and/or accuracy.
  23. Picky-Picky: Thanks. Yeah, 48hrs would be nice! My wife thinks I have a few too many hobbies oh well. She really does enjoy the room and has now informed me that a theater will be a requirement in our next house So I'm think'n - Design Theater, then build house around it... Hey, I can dream, can't I? Actually, I was looking for liquid materials to create the 2 x 2 foam tiles from a custom mold of my own design. Ive been in Sonex foamed rooms that were so quiet the made your ears hurt (when nothing was playing) But, Im really not wanting to shell out the $. The USG commercial tiles that Im using, as well as the extra padded carpeting, have really dampened the sound. I decided to use the Ceiling Max system (PVC instead of metal) for attaching the tiles to the sloped ceiling. With the tiles locked into place, I have no vibration/noise issues. Tom: Thanks. The sconces were actually quite inexpensive and are painted a lighter shade than the theater walls. I used JMs idea of wiring them into an IR dimmer and they work great. Originally, I put the rack on 6 casters to roll it out. This made it seem a little unstable with all the equipment and so I decided to remove them. The pocket behind my rack is 30 deep and Im able to squeeze around back for wiring by removing the side CD rack. I mounted a light in the ceiling above making everything easy to see (better than the old flashlight-in-mouth thing). You are right Tom! I probably spent at least twice as much time thinking about how to arrange the room than building. However, I do have a slight sleeping disorder that usually keeps me up until 2:00am.
  24. Picky-picky: Thanks for the compliments. The center channel is angled down 12° in the recess and does not seem to create any sound dispersion issues, probably due to the center mounted Tractrix tweeter. This ceiling took quite some time The area directly above the center channel is horizontal and the rest slopes down from the center of the room (9 down in 12). The rest of the basement has a ceiling hung at 7. The theater area is at 8 (not counting the raised floor section) and slopes down to 73 on the front wall. This was done to hide the screen when up, create an interesting theater look and as an experiment in acoustics. I will continue to do more testing (what a chore) on the acoustics of my design. My original intent was to create my own acoustic sound-trapping ceiling tiles and test them in this setup, but I got a little impatient. The roadblock for the tiles is to find a way to create the tiles with flame retardant materials Im using an MX-600 HT remote and an MRF-100 RF receiver with (6) IR repeaters. The range is supposedly 100. Although this was a little pricey, it has eliminated the need for a pile of remotes and easily penetrates the screen. The remote has a small screen that can be custom programmed and has learning capability. However, it will not correctly mimic the signal from my cordless keyboard/mouse unit. So, I basically have one remote and the keyboard. Many, many moons ago I did play in a band but not guitar (keys). Ive owned guitars and custom painted many guitars, but cant really play. The Gibson Flying V is one of my favorites and I might own one someday just to admire on the wall. Ive spent a bunch of time in a Cessna 172 and would have my Private Pilot license if I wouldnt have bought a house, changed jobs, got married, moved, bought another house and had a couple kids. So, I mainly build RC Aircraft and fly them once in a great while. The small aircraft in my current avatar is a balsa built Great Planes Lear w/a 55 wingspan and has a .46 size 2-stroke engine.
