  1. Hi, I have a KSW-15 S/N 15KSW--00070069. I am trying to figure out the date the speaker was manufactured. Thanks!

Are they as efficient as Khorns? As an aside, I wonder how the DRD45 compares to a Cary 300SEI integrated with the 300b tube. From your post it sounds like the 45 sounds better to you than the 300b, but the you are pointing out the volume (loudness) limitations of the 45 tube. Thanks

And you still may have a chance of finding NOS 45's if you wanna roll output tubes. With 300B, you are pretty much stuck with new production tubes....unless you want NOS WE 300B's....good luck! Doesn't Welborne give a guy TJ 300B's or something? The 45 has a awesome tone, but not much power either....2A3 kinda makes up the difference. 300B has the most power of all, a lush sound, but not quite as euphonic as a 2A3 or 45. 300B has more boogie factor. 45 would probably have best tone, but won't do Rap or grindcore without pinching pretty easy. Concerned about tone or power? ---------------- I'm looking for good spectral balance, good transparancy, good resolution, an open non-electronic liquidity (midrange, lower treble), good sound staging with layering and depth and spectral reach at both ends. I listen to 60's and 70's rock, jazz, new age, some opera (female vocals). I don't play music super loud, so hopefully the flea power of DRD45's will not be an issue. The room the 2 Khorns are in is 18' X 22' X 12'. The khorns are on the 18' wall pushed into the corners tightly. (Its a long story, but I could not get the khorns on the 22' wall where they really belong). Are 45 tubes still in production (I may be confusing them with 2A3s)? One of them (2A3 or 45) may be out of production.
  4. Hi, Sorry if this has already been talked to death...I did a quick search and was not able to find much. I'm trying to decide between Welbourne DRD45 amps or DRD300b amps and to drive my Klipshorns. I'm hoping to hear from others who have this setup. I will need a preamp as well, but that's a different topic. How would one compare the sound of 45 tube versus 300b tube amplification? Thanks Dave
  5. Sunprairie, Although I have not heard the RC-7, I would have to agree with J.4knee's post. I've been playing around with Khorns and LaScalas for front left and right, and have been experimenting with center channels (KLF-c7, Belle, LaScala). Since my room is only 15' wide at the front, the Khorns were not spaced far enough to image properly, and so I went with LaScalas. The next problem was the center channel. I compared the LaScala versus the KLF-C7, and boy, it was a night and day difference, with the LaScala being much better. So now I have a KLF-C7 for sale. :-) Unless you get a Hertigage center channel, and probably another LaScala, the left and right channels will simply overwhelm the center. 104dB/watt/meter efficiency is tought to compete with. I tried compensating with the output power from the pre-amp (Aragon at the time), but still was not able to match the results of the LaScala center channel. For HT, the center channel is really important (perhaps the most important speaker?), since alot of information is passed through the center relative to other speakers. Regards Dave
  6. Are you sure that bondo can be used on the speaker cabinent? I've never used bondo for wood... Thanks Dave
  7. Wow! A pair of Khorns for $1000! Can probably relist on ebay and can easily double the price! Unfortunately Chicago is a bit of a drive from California, and I'm sure the Khorns would dent the roof of my car in transit. :-)
  8. I picked up 3 LaScalas today. 2 are home LS, 1 is industrial LS. I've got a LS refinishing thread with a photo started in the home theatre section. If you are interested, check it out. Thanks for the advice Dave
  9. I am the proud new owner of 3 used LaScala speakers that I picked up today all for $850. Two of the Birch LaScala speakers have serial numbers 86711933, 86711934 and have the AL crossover with the K-55-M horn. One of the Black LaScala speakers is the "Pro" or Industrial version and has the serial number 1809. It has the AA crossover and I am told it has the Alniko (spelling?) driver magnetics (which is suppose to be more desirable). As one can see from the attached photo these speakers have seen an extensive tour of duty from plant holders to various table top duties, water spillage, being painted purple, and of course acrobatics including being suspended from the floor with 0.5" diameter holes drilled into the top. It also looks as though someone attempted to ice skate on the top of these speaker cabinets, if not just briefly. They sound great. The LaScala Pro seems to have less bass and appears to have more midrange clarity than the the regular LaScalas. I plan to use them for front left, center and right channels for home theatre in a 15' X 18' X 9' room, against the 15' wall. They are presently in the garage awaiting refinishing, which is my next project. Some questions: a) from the serial numbers, when were these speakers built? anyone have advice regarding refinishing, including patching the 0.5" diameter holes? Should I get a new piece of birch plywood instead for the tops, and if so has anyone taken the tops of the LaScala cabinents apart? c) What's the special (if anything) about "Alniko driver magnetics"? d) I thought the horns K-33-E were stock for LaScalas, I wonder why I have K-55-Ms? Thanks Dave
  10. Gil, Thanks for the tip. Found lots of interesting info on Industrial LS. Now the next question... I have the choice of 2 normal La Scalas and 1 center channel Industrial La Scala, or 3 Industrial La Scalas for my Home Theater Front left, center, right speakers. Any opinion on this? Thanks Dave
  11. So $1300 for 3 used La Scala pro model speakers is an OK deal? I'll use these for front left, center, front right. Will use 4 Heresy II's for 2 sides and 2 rears. Does anyone know the difference between the La Scala and the La Scala pro model? Thanks Dave
  12. I have an opportunity to purchase some used La Scala "Pro Model" speakers. Does anyone know the difference between La Scala "Pro Models" and the regular La Scala speakers? I apologize if this has been covered before. I searched the archives but could not find anything. Thanks!
  13. I compared a Belle relative to the KLF-C7 and it was like a 1000 watt Halogen light compared to a 1 milliwatt LED. I have not heard the La Scalas. Any idea what a good price would be for LaScala's. I see a few Ebay auctions for La Scalas in the $700 to $800 a pair. Is this a high price or about the going rate? Thanks
  14. Home Theatre Room is 15' wide, 18' long, 9' high. Video is along the 15' wide dimension, and therefore the left, center and right speakers are along the 15' wide wall. Its too late at this point to move the video to the 18' wall. One concern is whether the LaScala speakers need to find a nice corner to sound right (as do K-horns). I already have a KLF-c7 which is timber matched to KLF-30's (which I still would need to purchase). A neighbor is selling LaScala's cheap at a garage sale, left and right, and a modified one for the center channel. So that's why I'm saying I have a "choice".
