  1. To bad Bell Labs (UNIX) doesn't design a new OS. They would have patterned it after the human DNA code. JJK
  2. I have listened to tubes in the 50's,60's,70's, & 80's and when I switched to solid state and there immediately was no hum, no hiss, no lower bass tonel coloration, no boomy bass, no muddied cymbal hits, no maintenance, no ground loops. In my field I have thrown away thousands of mediocre tubes, the same garbage you are using in your super amps. JJK
  3. While Norton software is prolific, it does have its negatives. One of them is the occasional bad disc you get from them which they will never admit that it is bad. Another is their software entangles itself so bad in the registry that if you ever want to purge it out you have to wipe the hard drive and reload the OS. Another occasional problem is a bad live update download (which you must do every day as they have a new download every two days) which can reak havoc with your online software. This happened a few months back and it takes them about two days of people hammering on them to get it fixed. They never admit to a mistake. The last problem they had was with the Windows installer software conflicting with theirs. Only took about 5-6 years to get that fixed. The new Windows 3.1 installer software will prevent the Norton stuff from screwing up your computer. Their stuff does work however. I have the Winfax fax software, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam, and Firewall in two online computers with Win2k. Good luck. JJK
  4. Marvel: That's kool. The AC-3 deal just cuts the space in half while maintaining the same quality. Some of the older DVD players actually looked for AC-3 on the DVD disc and if not found it would spit out. Not so with the new players so PCM stereo is just fine. Your DVD writing software might convert the PCM to AC-3 anyway. Keep in mind also that there is a lot of flack going on with the pro's on the longevity of the 1x x 8x discs and also the 4x discs. It seems they are only certifying the 4x discs for 10years +. They will not certify the 8x discs at all because they use a different substrate. The gold substrate discs cost about 25 bucks apiece and they will certify those for 30 years. Another bunch of lies to get the consumer in the butt. Remember now that tapes last about 30 years. JJK
  5. Marvel: The WMM is a good idea for you for editing but the transfer from 16mm film to video is the key to maintaining the quality. Just make sure that the tape that they convert it to can be captured to your computer editor software. And do not use VHS, it is terrible (254 lines per mm) S-VHS is 400, 8mm is 400, mini-dv is 530, digital 8mm is 450, Beta-SP is 750. JJK
  6. My super klystron scanner speaker is really kool. You lay down and pass through the huge magnets and the huge diameter of the klystron tube. The results sometimes are not so good as your body is converted to a puff of smoke at peak power levels. But up to that point the sound is staggering. Sometimes if your bodies resonances are in the correct mode you will pass through without a scratch, but the blown ear drums are a problem. Some of these minor glitches are troublesome and some new models based on a K-horn bass bin supersized about 20 fold so walk in doors allow access. It didn't solve the blown eardrums though. JJK
  7. You probably want to go with the cheaper stuff as the learning curve is much easier and easier on the wallet. As for converting the film its best to send it out to the pro's or someone you know who does a good job, since this is the "key" to keeping the quality at a high level. If you have a camcorder with a firewire output then have the film converted to the tape that is used in the camcorder then you can capture it easily into your editor. Otherwise you have to have an analog/digital converter to capture. Ulead and Sony make some quickie easy to learn editors. Memorizing about a thousand new video abbreviations and terms to learn editing is not that easy. JJK
  8. Don't get too hepped up on BluRay yet. Sony is in conference with the HD-DVD people to enable one platform only for High Definition. Possibly a whole new format combining the two. JJK
  9. If your in the lawn mower class. JJK
  10. They make a pretty good difference, more than what I would have believed. Smoother, better balance, somewhat more volume (at least 1 db) and actually made my Cornwall sound better at voices than the K-horns. JJK
  11. Gees, I wouldn't let my Mother borrow my tubes. You know that it is entirely possible to read the tube nomenclature and write it down on the amp or draw a picture of where they are located. Every manufacturer in the world had a small diagram on the unit somewhere to show tube location. JJK
  12. You could have a grounding bar hanging near the amp to place on the cap continously as they required in the military. Could maybe dress it up a bit to be fashionable with the living room decor. JJK
  13. What I wonder is how you got the horns to work at all in such a small space? They have to be really choked off in bass output. They really need 25 ft between them to set them free. JJK
  14. I have never heard a recording that would match the "ambiance" of the actual event. Even the Nascar broadcasts are compressed to crap. They seem to be reduced in volume about 30 db. I really don't think they ever will capture the humongous experience that you get at the strip. Even the "inside the car" recordings suck. I remember my 1967 L88 Vette with the windows closed with the sound pulsating and the windows vibrating in a glorious conflagration of noise, vibration, burning rubber, gasoline vapors, and heat---it was beautiful. JJK
  15. Well now they are no longer antiques. No petina on the labels. JJK
  16. I have to apologize to everyone reading this thread about the definition of what HD is or is not. My HDTV tuner crapped out and I purchased a new LG-3510 over the air tuner. Now there are 18 possible "zoom" variations with this tuner.I have been assimilated into the "PR zoom world of HD" and so now in my world everything on the tube is now "High Definition" regardless if it is or not. JJK
  17. Another option if space is at a premium is to enclose them in metal conduit. Run the speaker wires in a separate cutsey thingy along the wall or under the floor away from the power cords. Or router a 1/2" slot on the back of your floor trim board and re-install. JJK
  18. You might be able to remove them very carefully with a heat gun. Or make a tracing and recreate them in a software package such as Photoshop or Corel 12. JJK
  19. Just the fact that Sony is hinting at possibly talking to the HD-DVD people is earth shattering and I almost fell off my chair when I heard that. I would love to see them get together and I think if there was a solution Sony would benefit in the short run and the others would benefit in the long run when more capacity is required for who knows---3D, etc.--- JJK
  20. That's why good cabinetmakers cut the miters at 45.5 0r 46 degrees and clamp the crap out of it when gluing. They also finish off the edges on a jointer for perfect fit. Their equipment is set up to perfection, and nothing else will suffice. It's impossible to do a great job with a circular saw as the slop in the blades, bearings, and mountings, and even with a clamped guide you will be at least +- .060" form one end to the other. And that doesn't allow for human hiccups during the cut. The circular saw blade will actually bend back and forth during the cut no matter how good the guide is. You have to go super duper slow to prevent the blade from creeping and if the cord gets caught it's all over. So you have to have the cord wrapped around your shoulder and a perfectly sharp blade that doesn't bias the cut in one direction. The work has to be clamped to something that does not move or jiggle. And make sure you have safety glasses and you can't stop in the middle of the cut to clean them. Good luck, you will need it real bad. JJK
  21. I failed to mention that my predictions are usually wrong. JJK
  22. They probably would produce a lot of heat when running flat out. JJK
  23. One huge problem with electric battery powered vehicles is as the batteries discharge the speed and torque slowly diminish. Electric towmotors work the same way. At half charge nothing happens or it is so slow it is put back on the charger. You constantly have to refill the batteries with distilled water and the battery life and performance diminishes over a 3 year period. After the three year period the battery usually has to be replaced because it is cracked and leaking. No car owner is going to put up with that kind of crap. Then there is the increased power consumption on the national electric grid which no one seems concerned about. With the hydrogen powered vehicles the articles I read said the production of hydrogen from natural gas would equal the polution saved from running the vehicles on hydrogen. Now that's a real dumb deal. JJK
  24. dragonfyr: I will make it easier for you to understand. BluRay will loose. HD-DVD will win. A standard DVD production line (there are many) can be converted to produce HD-DVD's in 15 minutes. BluRay has no production lines and the first one being built by Sony will cost over 1 billion dollars. Sony is saying they can reduce the production cost of a single disc to be almost as cheap as the HD-DVD disc. The bean counters have already wrapped it up to a done deal. And by the way the quality of the playback on the two types of discs is the same. The only difference is the capacity. JJK
