  1. Best Buy is one of the worst places to audition audio equipment. heck, that may go for everything, but I will restrict my comments to just audio. I went in last week to listen to the new F series and the Sub-12. Well, the F3's were impressive, despite the fact they are set up on an aisle on a metal display cabinet. Yes, this really simulates what they would play like in MY living room!

This brings me to the Sub-12, also set up on a metal shelf in the middle of an aisle. So the thumping of the sub was overshadowed by the banging reflex of the metal shelves it was rattling. Sure, it sounds like it could rattle a few windows but, for pete's sake, set up the system in a realistic setting so I can truly demo the speakers/subs! Best Buy just does an injustice to not only the speakers but the customers who desire to purchase them as well!

Now, I truly appreciated the RW-12 for the price I paid for it (less than the $499 retail of the Sub-12.) Since I question anything that costs retail at Best Buy, I can say I would be surprised if the Sub-12 is better than the RW-12 but I admittedly haven't done an A-B side by side comparison. But, then again, short of buying one and bringing it home, there is no way you can get a realistic impression of the Sub-12 the way Best Buy has them set-up!

On a positive note, they at least had all of the components hooked up properly this time so I could at least get the speakers to play the demo music. Too many times I have went in and not only were they not connected to demo, nobody around knew how to connect them to demo.

Well I thought I would give you guys some closure on my story. I went up to chicago this weekend and picked up the speakers. Got home late last night so I haven't gotten to get a lot of time with them, but I watch a bit of Lord of the Rings, and played some of my favorite music. Overall they sound great. I will have to go through the "fine tuning" I have attached a pic (a pretty crappy one) that I snapped this morning with my phone.

Thanks for all your suggestions and help.

Looks great! Just to let you know if you are interested. I still have a Denon 3801 for sale that would go great with the RF-35s. I used it to drive my RF3IIs and it did a fantastic job. I bought another Denon from a local seller as an upgrade so I just don't need the 3801 anymore. PM me if you are interested...

I am not sure what sub, if any you are using but you defnitely don't have a completed system until you have a good sub. I bought my first sub, an RW-12, about 4 months ago and then bought an RSW12 a few weeks later. My HT hasn't been the same since...

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

Well I can get the RW-12 for 650$ CDN from a local retailer which is probably something around 520$ USA... its actualy a pretty good price in Canada (since everything seems to be more expensive when it comes to audio), I'll sell my RW-8 so it will give me some money for my upgrade! cant wait to buy everything at the end of the summer, my parents are going to freak and I hope they wont ask the price cuz they'll freak even more, I told them my RF-35 were 400$CDN (well that I had a "deal" anyway, they believed me. If they realise I've spend all that money on a sound system, my dad might die from a heart attack! So yeah, I love Klipsch!

Dang, kid, you've got the audio bug bad! When I was your age I was more focused on my 67 Chevy pick-up, hoping it would help me pick-up the chicks... (now, you're wondering how well I did... Ha, let's just say I didn't have that much money to poor into it, unfortunately.)

    D-Rex,

There are some folks on the forum who are completely delighted with their multi-channel setups. That's not only o.k. with me, I'm happy for these guys.

I should offer the disclaimer that I've not done anything with multi channel audio, but did go to the trouble once to set up an all Heritage HT 5.1 system. Had family visiting and watched a bunch of movies over a weekend. It was o.k. However, I'm part of a small minority that never got used to having all the dialogue come over the center speaker. HT to my ears, doesn't sound like the sound in a theatre. Running the audio on my Khorns alone as L and R makes movies sound like what I hear when I go out for a movie. It's quite pleasing to my ears.

Discovering what sounds good to one's own ears is what this hobby is all about, IMO. Some people may think I wear a tin foil liner under my cap, but it doesn't worry me.

    ----------------

I feel real comfortable with the volume coming from the center channel as far as movies is concerned. When I first began utilizing the PLII mode I thought it was breaking out the center channel out to the mains a bit too much. It worked better for music but it seemed to take away from my movies and TV. I have sense gotten used to it much more so I don't notice it as much. I am too used to having full surround for my movies I don't think I could go back to stereo...

Have you tried listening in Dobly PL II? or in DTS? The 5 channel stereo and those other modes always sound like crap because having 5 diffent sources for the same material introduces all sorts of comb-filtering effects which just sucks up the quality and fullness. The dolby pro logic and dts modes run the signal through all sorts of algorithms based on phase differences between the two channels and even apply some phase processing to make the 5 channels sound good. Recently I've been having a real hard time choosing between direct stereo and dolby pl II because they both sound very good, but one of the two always sounds better for different songs. I must confess that the dolby and dts processing didn't sound near as good until I get my system dialed in and played around with the surround processing (your reciever should allow you to tweak some of the aspects of the the processing, like how wide the stereo image is an all that). It also helps to have a timbre matching center channel.

    ----------------

Yes, I have recently been experimenting with the PLII music mode and it was definitely preferred over the 5 channel I had been using. But, when I compared it to the normal stereo I found that the PLII still seemed to be under-utilizing the RF3II thus there was too much reliance on the RC3II. Now, I am working to get an RC-7 so that might make a difference when relying upon the center channel for music but, so far, nothing my system can do beats the 2.1 mode for music...

The rear channels are dedicated to surround information, not the main.

The center is really a part of the main but is often used for the dialog part of movies. Unless the decoder removes a good portion of the L/R signals from the center and the center from the L/R, things just get muddier. In short, 2-channel and multi-channel are different beasts, neither of which is without problems.

I believe the multi-channel signal really wants to be coded and recorded as multi from the source. I mean by that the forcing of two channels into 3 or 5 does not do justice to the original.

The Home Theater section of this forum is dedicated to multi-channel issues.

This is just my opinion. I used to love 2-channel. Now I love 3-channel. Never cared much for the surround effects. I also use a sub off the mains (L/R).

Why should one assume that the jamming of multi-channel sound into just two is superior to the original? Of course, the recorded source must be constructed correctly or else your just doing the same type of injustice that the 2-channel introduced.

I do not believe the industry in general has ever done well in recorded music. Having said that, I must add that some of my records sound just wonderful. Ditto on my CDs. For example, how can a violin sound as loud as a kettle drum. I have many albums were that situation actually exists.

Remember what I said earlier. This is my opinion, which I do NOT expect everybody to accept.

    ----------------

I get what you are saying about the HT forum being the multi channel forum. I am not sure why I thought if 5 (6 or 7) channels worked great for HT that it would work equally great for music. Certainly a faulty assumption.

Well, unless someone comes up with some better logic, I think your explanation makes perfect sense. However, I am still a little curious why selecting 5 channel stereo actually decreases the volume and impact (feel) of the music. It's like it sucks power away from the mains and diverts it to the surrounds. Is that how it works?

  7. I have had this notion that if two speakers sound great and loud then playing my music through all five speakers will sound even greater and louder. What a misconception!

I have been playing my music through 5 channel stereo for 8 months now, tried matrix, wide screen, rock arena, but never thought to really try plain ole 2 channel stereo! WOW, the fullness comes back to the music, the RF3 IIs with the RSW12 can really get you rocking!

I just don't understand why they don't sound this rich and full when I change it to five channel. Shouldn't the mains be getting the same amount of power but now I have three more speakers pumping out the tunes?!? I really want to utilize the RB5 surrounds during music playback but not at the cost of sacrificing the great sound the RFs put out!

Dang, I can't believe I haven't noticed this sooner... and now I know why there is a forum dedicated to two channel and not five (or seven) channel.

I bought a couple of tube monoblocks from a guy on ebay. He packed them terrible, with just some folded cardboard around the amps. Then, he has the balls to write 'Books and Videos' on the box and ships them media mail, just to save a few bucks on shipping. The chassis on one of them got bent as well. The guy is so stupid, I feel bad leaving him a negative, but am considering it.

    ----------------

Don't feel bad! Look at it from another perspective. You negative response will either teach him to pack better during shipment or it will protect others from bidding for his merchandise because he doesn't pack his shipments adequately. At the very least leave him a neutral, explaning the poor packing!

  10. UPS modified my RW-12 I had shipped to a gentleman in Linden Texas. Unfortunately, the broken grill, cracked housing and bent woofer didn't sound quite as good as the new owner had hoped. They tried to decline paying insurance by claiming I didn't pack it properly but, I kept their feet to the fire and they have, just yesterday, left me a message stating they are in the process of cutting a check for the damage. We shall soon see.

I had an item I bought from a guy out in Nevada that got damaged (my RB-5's) that FedEx originally declined. I understood because they looked perfect on the outside but the tweeter had fallen off and bounced around on the inside of the speaker. I took pictures and forwarded them to FedEx and they re-examined and approved the claim. I eneded up getting the speakers back that, with a little glue and some soldering, turned out to be almost as good as new.

I have to say my experence with FedEx was a much more pleasant experience.

  11. I know you could take every song you ever owned with some of those digital players but the point was to try and make you think what would be the top 10 you wouldn't want to be without. Of course, after a few months/years in space you would probably have much different selections... ;-)

Brother in Arms is an excellent selection! How could I get by without my "That's not working..." song?!?

    So, What time is it?

  12. Depending upon how good a deal you are talking about, I wouldn't hesitate to get the RB-5's. They are very versatile speakers, I used mine as mains before I bought a pair of RF3 II's and then moved them to rear surrounds. They are also good as a pair of stand alone stereo speakers.

  13. I was listening to 'Little Miss Can't Be Wrong' on my way home from work this evening and I couldn't help but think this band got swept away by the darker grundge music of Nirvana. Am I mistaken here or am I over analyzing it a bit? Maybe there next CD just stunk so they broke up...

I can only say that their Pocket Full of Kryptonite CD is one of my favorites of all time. If I were making a list of 10 CDs I would have to take with me on a trip in outerspace the list might look like this (not necessarily in any order):

Pocket Full of Kryptonite - Spin Doctors

    Nevermind - Nirvana

Songs You Know By Heart - Jimmy Buffett

    The Wall - Pink Floyd

    Garth Brooks - Garth Brooks

    Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

    Joshua Tree - U2

    Hotel California - Eagles

    ???? - ????

    ???? - ????

Help me fill out my final 2... what am I leaving out and what must I remove? I tried to stay away from greatest hits since those songs spanned over several albums.

I finally did it Saturday. Replaced the Sony HTIB speaker with the Klipsch 35 line.

    Front - RF-35

    Center - RC-35

    Surrounds - RS-35

    Sub - RW-12

My first impression was what real speakers look like compared to the small Sony ones they replaced. That observation went ten fold for the sound. I didin't realize there was such a hole in the Sony setup between the sub and the sats. After running DVE we threw in the fifth element. Even if the mains and center were set to small there was midrange present in the Klipsch. They sounded full. I had considered what to get for surrounds. After some thought i stuck with the RS-35's. I am happy I did this. they sounded great. the only part of the package i had concerns about was the sub. So far i am really impressed by the RW-12. Maybe this is being use to a 6 inch Sony sub, but I really like it.

My first complete movie test was National Treasure. Sounded amazing. I was blown away how much better the experiance was. It movie has a huge mix of "raspy" voices and gun shots and explosions. The raspy voices are things that always sounded bad on the Sony system. The Klipsch system sounded great.

So far so good, plenty more testing to do, including music. I will say that I am a happy Klipsch owner.

I felt the same way as I began replacing my old pioneer system with Klipsch speakers. I couldn't believe the night and day differences! I couldn't believe how I had mistreated my ears for so many years! I have been very pleased with my Klipsch purchases and so has my wife! (and that is saying something!)

I too was impressed when I had the RW-12. I bought it off the web for $400 so, for the price, I was very impressed!

  15. I bought this from Columbia House for a little less than $8 but I haven't opened it yet. I guess I should take it out of the package and watch it sometime! I don't have a 6.1 setup yet but me and the wife have discussed it a little... that's at least a good sign!

lol...I am wide awake now. Yep, I often will ask for 3% or split it with a customer, especially on large $ items, more so since I sell stuff so cheaply to begin with! If you really want to have your eyes opened go to www.paypalsucks.com and take a look, unreal...but, I was burned on a deal for $800 and PayPal did NOTHING to help except lip service. The customer ended up making it right. PayPal customer service or merchant services is an oxymoron. My ordeal drug out for nearly 6 months.

Yes, I didn't know about the additional 3% until I sold something myself and received a credit card payment. I am not sure how much the credit card companies charge paypal for the transaction but I highly doubt it is 3% of the total! I am seeing that paypal is highly compensated for their ease of use. I, fortuntely have not had to use their customer service features yet.

Regardless, that was my attempt to pick up the first 3% and then having the buyer pick up the other 3% if a credit card was used.

At this time it appears I am waiting on one more individual before I move on to EBAY.

    Thanks for looking guys!

  17. I bought it on Friday and watched it last night. It was really an entertaining movie! Amazingly enough, this movie didn't have to have excessive amounts of CGI graphics and dopey lines to draw your interest or create the story line. Okay, maybe that is a back handed stab at the recent Star Wars movies but still, I was impressed with how this movie kept my attention throughout.

Another thing this movie didn't try to parade in front of the viewer is an excessive amount of violence or sexual content. Sure, for us adults, alot of that in a few movies is great but, this movie doesn't go there and it is still very enjoyable! As stated above, the movie is certainly watchable with children. As a matter of fact, it might stimulate a little interest in the history of the US.

Overall, a good movie that I would certainly recommend to friends and family...
