  1. I agree,Chris didnt mention the humidity levels that we see even here in Iowa on the other side of the Rockies!Chris we were only in the high 90's but can imagine 100+ with this freakin humidity. Greg
  2. none that I can think of,but ....ya never know! Greg
  3. Gil makes a good point. If that checks out buy em,make sure you listen to them first, make sure the tweets are'nt blown also.HOW BIG IS YOUR ROOM?because these things will fill a small auditorium! Greg
  4. Chris, Here is a link,I think I got mine from the cable co or the needle doctor.I am sur they are available on ebay for a good price. Greg http://www.changlightspeed.com/
  5. Jay my rig is setup in my basement. The noisefloor is very close to the same all the time.I can't hear anything outside of my house.During the winter I hate it when the furnace kicks in,I have actually lowered the setpoint on my thermostat many times to shut the damn thing off.Hey I enjoy the heat my tube amps put out..lol. Greg
  6. Greg, I have notice the same thing. I live in a quiet neighborhood, so there is no outside noise floor that I am hearing. When I stay up late, my system gets very clean. Usually at about 11:00 or later, which is when everyone is going to sleep and air conditioners are not working as much. I use a Belkin power isolater, but that will not help with voltage. I have a Monster 3500, but do not use it right now because I need to get my equipement racks built. I bought the Monster because it was only $109 shipped w/ warranty. Can anyone inform us as to a pro unit or industrial power supply like the PS Audio unit that can be bought used without the "Audiophile" upcharge. Thanks, Chris Chris, I found my PS unit on ebay for $700,retail is over 2k. I use the PS for my CDP,SET tube amps and the Rane active crossover. My Bryston SS amps get there power from a Chang Lightspeed that is plugged into a dedicated line. As far as I know PS Audio is the only company that takes this approach to power conditioning. Greg
  7. Sorry Tom, but I'm at a loss here. What are you referring to as bass traps? I only ask because I don't have any. [8-)] Charles LOL,Charles I think Tom is refering to my pic. Tom, The hanging bass traps are Sonotubes used for pouring concrete footings.I have cut holes in them and filled with standard fiberglass isulation. When I first built them I had caps on the top and bottom opening of the tube.My impression was they were worthless then I got the idea to open up the ends of the tube and hang them, previously they sat on the floor. With the tubes open on the ends there is a difference in my room.Cant say they would work for someone elses room. Its a cheap expieriment to try. Greg
  8. Greg, Nice! That setup looks mean! LOL It may or may not be "perty", but neither is mine, but the sound is what counts. BTW, what are those two units sitting against the right wall. Looks like a pair of 300B monoblocks. Charles Mean,I like that.lol! The Electriprint 300B's now reside in Calif.Charlieboy purchased them last week. Perty is in the eye of the beholder for sure. Its all about the sound! Greg
  9. Charles, Here is a pic of my latest...stacked,racked and active! She dont look perty but boy can she sing. Its all an experiment.... Greg
  10. Hey Charles, There is that word again! Seriously its looking good.I also find that the K-33's just dont sound right run up to 800hz.What is your impression of the high freqencies now that you have heard the 902 all the way to 20k for awhile? Greg
  11. Dana, Great thread. Some interesting discoveries in your system.I am still looking hard at the BMS 4592 coax driver down the road.Right now I have the BMS 4552 1" in place of the 902's on the 511 horns.I am trying to get some impressions of the BMS driver vs. the Altec 902.The 902 definately holds its own everywhere except in the efficiency area.BMS is 113db vs 106db for the 902.I have achieved my goal of higher eff and have all the attenuation out of my SS bass amps now.The tonal/level balance of the bass and highs are very close. Greg
  12. This is an interesting thread.Lots of good info. I use a PS Audio P-500 powerplant on my frontend components and low power tube amps.My high powered SS amps(used for bass in my active biamp rig)are plugged into a Chang Lightspeed isolation transformer which is plugged into a dedicated line just recently installed. I think the PS unit is a big improvement. It has some nice features, one I really like is it maintains constant voltage and cycles to my components delivering the mids and highs. As for the SS amps plugged into the dedicated line.I cant really tell a difference but have only had it rigged this way for about 2 weeks. The PS unit does work,it vastly improves the sound. This is not psycoacoustic BS and here is the story.3 years ago I purchased a Mark Levinson #39 CDP used. After about a week in the system I was very dissapointed with the sound. It was ok but just not right, not what I expected.Every review I read on this unit was either they loved it because it digs deep and shows all the flaws of the recording or they hated it for the very same reason.Well one night I woke up at 3am.I could not sleep so I fired up the computer and stereo. As I am surfing the web I start to notice that the sound is different...like really good, very clear and detailed.I am thinking to myself WTF.is this the same CDP?.Then it dawned on me that its 3:30am.I have always heard the power is cleaner at night but never really noticed a big difference.Over the next week I investigated this situation.I was on vacation and had a week to play around.Sure enough listening to the rig at day was ok but nothing impressive. Then at night the system transformed.I found my self listening more at night(late)or early in the morning. My conclusion was that this ML #39 likes clean power, just a different machine at certain times of the day. The PS unit is rated for a 500 watt draw,my current draw with the Wavelength tube monos,ML #39,Rane active x-over and BagEnd integrator is 93 watts. Within a month I found a used PS Audio P-500 and have never looked back. The sound of the system is now very good no matter what time of the day.Call this psyco bs if you want but you will never convince me otherwise. Greg
  13. Michael, Ever thought of doing the ported mod for your lows on one set of bass bins(you have 4 total...right?).Just a thought.... Are you going to run the mid/tweet sections using a passive to divide those signals? I think you have plenty of power,as a rule of thumb put the most powerful amp on the lows, your cleanest amp on the mids/highs. Greg
  14. Well folks the slow boat to China never set sail and a gentleman from down south by the name of Troy Ohden picked them up tonight. He called last night and said he was gonna drive up and get them.I asked where from and he replies Kentucky only about 8 hrs or so.I says OK sounds like a roadtrip, got a buddy coming with.He replys no to short of notice.I'm thinkin this guy is a road warrior and crazy to boot...I like that! Troy arrived shortly after I got home from work. There was weather in the area and we were worried about them getting wet.Troy brought some plastic to wrap them.We figured out a plan and about an hour later they were sitting in his truck strapped up behind the cab with lots of foam padding. At that point he got his camera out and got a pic of the load. Then I found myself posing for one also.He had to hit the road soon to a friends place in Illinois.I gave him a quick tour of my system and we checked the radar. The weather was mostly to the north. Troy, thanks for buying the Scala's and like I said before I am impressed with your commitment to that long road trip alone.I hope you enjoy the LaScala's as much as I did. Be sure to post those pics. Greg
  15. djk you wrote: "by omitting the low pass filter found on most subs resulting in minimal delay with the higher freq" Pure marketing BS. The group delay is strictly a function of the frequency response of the filters. The BagEnd subs have a two-pole low-pass filter (they call it an integrator) that causes a 12dB/oct low pass in the transfer function at about 80hz in most of their models. I was under the impression they use a dual integrator that have minimal delay charactoristics as compared to a normal lowpass filter. Also that the frequencies they operate thier subs at are 180 degrees out of phase with the higher frequencies passed to the mains. They then reverse the phase at the outputs to the mains to bring everything back into phase. Does an integrator circut have different charachteristics than say a typical low pass filter? Greg
  16. Charlie, I wonder which is bigger your rack of vinyl or Colt's stack of Klipsch? Looking good! Greg
  17. Well damn.I get home from work and the thread I started is loaded with info. Some very interesting reading here. Some of it seems a bit over my head at this time. SUNNYSAL wrote: At the same time, another audio consultant, Ed Long, the inventor of the term "time align" started working on absolute polarity. He found that some music and speech was very polarized, and easily heard. Other stuff was so multimiked, both in and out of polarity, that resolution was difficult, if possible at all. Ed Long and Ron Wickersham are the inventors of the BagEnd sound. My sub system is made by BagEnd and one of the principles involved in this system includes time alignment with the high freqencies by omitting the low pass filter found on most subs resulting in minimal delay with the higher freq..I am very impressed with the bass and how well it integrates with the mains.I have never heard bass this good.Due to this expierience I am exploring the possibilities for time alignment in the rest of the system.Maybe there wont be a noticable difference maybe there will be????If as mentioned in previous posts other effects of a misalignment can be improved then it might be worth it.Hell there are many active crossovers out there that include the delay function and very reasonably priced.I got my Rane for $75 and could probably unload it for the same then get a Behringer for $130.A reasonable upgrade to play around with time delay. Thanks for everyones input. Greg
  18. I thought that was when the wife says "Not tonight......" LOL...
  19. Mike, That makes more sense.I didnt take into account the path length of the horn bass bin but only the physical alingnment of the drivers. Thanks, Greg
  20. djk, I would enjoy that very much.I have sent PM.Back to the question at hand I came up with about 1.5 ms.for a dealy setting to the HF driver.36" minus 18"=18" or 1.5'. Thanks,Greg
  21. Charles, That was my impression before I posted this thread, but it is not so. Greg
  22. BTW,what is the distance for the sound wave in the Scala bass bin? Greg
  23. Mike, Maybe I have this wrong but you suggest adding delay for every foot CLOSER.Do you mean further away the HF driver is from the LF driver? Greg
