  1. Since the holiday season is approching, here is a little video to put us into the proper frame of mind.

Makes you wonder about the morons in the audience. The kids on stage look like they're bored to death.

  2. A 105 wpc version of the ST-140 was my introduction to B&K amps.

I've used the ST-140 with a pair of Cornwalls and also with a pair of KG2s. B&K sounds great with Klipsch on all types of music.

You'll often see B&K amps described as being warm & "tubelike." Don't know about that, but the sound is to my liking. I had a monster (375 wpc) Carver TFM-45 when I got my ST-140 and, over time, found that I was listening to the little B&K more than the Carver. As you can see from my sig line, I've moved up the B&K food chain since then. I guess you could say that I like their gear. [:o]

  3. Josh:

You're right, a Sharpie (or other "Magic Marker") has a purplish tint. It is not all that noticeable, however, except upon close inspection.

I have a pair of pretty beat KG4.5s that are missing a lot of paint. I had been planning on sanding them down and repainting them, but picked up a Sharpie one day and started coloring in the areas of missing paint. Turned out pretty good. You can see the difference if you're looking for it, but most people don't notice. Not a perfect match by any means, but it beats bare wood showing through.

  4. Had a similar thing happen a few years back....

My Brother worked for a company that converted their box van to a flatbed. The "box" was then available for free. Recognizing the value of having a place to stash stuff, I couldn't let it get away. Trouble was, living in San Francisco. I had no where to park a car, let alone a "box." So, I called up a like minded buddy with some acrerage in the north bay & said "this thing is big enough to store BOTH of our motorcycles AND they'll deliver it! He said COOL! and the deal was on.

When the "box" was being delivered, my buddy's wife sidled up to me and whispered "James, I'm gonna get you for this..."

    Truer words were never spoken.

  5. Chicago: The NeXTStep OS was built on top of Unix (BSD 4.3)

Marvel: Yeah, NeXT systems are now bog slow comparatively speaking.

    I've got a "Turbo" Cube and a NeXTstation TurboColor slab - both running 33mhz 68040 cpu's.

Simple and elegant, still my preferred OS for most things, especially word processing - how fast can you type anyway?

As an aside, they just celebrated the 20th aniversary of the inception of the World Wide Web at Cern in Switzerland where it was created by Tim Berners-Lee using a NeXT Cube.

  6. That's one of the reasons I still have a NeXT Cube sitting under my desk. Faxes are sent directly to and from my computer. When a fax is received my printer fires up and prints it out. The only drawback is that if something does not originate in the computer, I have to scan it in before I can fax it. 20 year old technology - still does stuff my "modern" computers can't. [H]

  7. If you've got a amp you can use, you might want to take a look at a used B&K PT3 Series II preamp. You should be able to pick one up in the $150 - $200 range. Very flexible stereo preamp with a sub out & also a very good built-in tuner (no phono input though). I have two of them, one in the BR system & one in the office. Love 'em. I just hit mute on the remote when the phone rings.

  8. Thanks Guys: The idea is to be able to power up the amp with a 12 vdc trigger by turning on the preamp with the remote.

Jim: That would work, but friends don't let friends buy Monster Cable products. [:|] (Especially at their inflated prices.)

Jerohm: At first blush, it looks like that strip might work, but after reading the reviews, you're probably right, the differential in current draw involved in switching the preamp from "sleep" to "on" should be relatively small and may not be enough to trigger the switch.

Roger: Yeah, in a previous setup I had this amp pluged into a switched outlet on the rear of a Carver CT17 preamp and used the Carver remote to turn the system on and off. Everything you read will tell you not to plug a high current device like an amp into a switched outlet on a preamp, but the little Optonica amp I'm using is only 40 wpc and it has a "soft" power-on circuit (the on/off switch triggers a relay which then fires up the amp after a slight delay). Worked fine in my garage system, but I sold the Carver and the B&K PT3 II I'm currently using has a 12 vdc trigger, but no switched outlets.

Inventor: Those all look like they'd do the trick, but WAY too pricey. I don't need power conditioning, just a simple switch. At the Furman & Panamax prices it would make more sense to just buy another amp with a 12 vdc trigger function built in. But I'm trying to use what I've got. Oh, and we try not to break any bottles around here - don't want to waste any of the precious content! [H]

  10. I picked up a beat pair of satin black KG 4.5's cheap a couple of years ago. Missing a lot of paint, crunched corners, gouges, etc.

Stuck them in the bedroom & figured I'd fill the gouges, sand them down & paint them when I needed a weekend project.

I was looking at them one day & thinking about how crappy they looked, so I picked up a Sharpie & started coloring in where they were missing paint. Not a perfect match, but they actually turned out pretty decent. Still haven't sanded them down or painted them, but they look good enough that I'm using them as rear speakers in the living room. Not bad for $50 & an hour with a Sharpie!

  11. Although I've never heard the "real thing," I've always liked the jazz version by Jim Hall as well as the Miles Davis/Gil Evans colaboration on Sketches of Spain.

Looking over the Sketches of Spain liner notes, however, surprisingly I see that there wasn't even a guitarist on the session!

Understand that there is also a version by Paco de Lucia - although I've never heard it.

  12. If this goes per the Comp USA & Good Guys model, a liquidation firm will be brought in to handle the "final clearance" sales.

The initial "liquidation" sale prices will be MSRP less 10% - in other words - full retail. So, don't expect any screaming deals.

You'll do better walking into any other going concern & doing a little haggling.
