  1. yeah, neither side will EVER change the other sides' mind. Never. Like my aunt used to say "Stop blowing, wind."
  2. I think Jerry Garcia's solo albums are a must have, especially ... uh, hmmmm. Well, Bobbie's Ace is a good album too, and yeah, the Jerry one with "The Wheel" is what I'm thinking of. don't think don't think don't think don't think don't think don't think don't think don't think don't think don't think don't think
  3. nonsense. I use a bunch of twist-ties that I've twisted together, works just great, I can hear fine. For the high current applications I use coat hangers that I've straightened out. Works great, I can hear fine.
  4. I have the Welborne Labs 300B Laurel II's with all the tweaks and I can say I like them a lot. At another house I've listened to a different 300B (which I didn't care for that much), a Moondog 2A3 (which I loved) and a DRD 45, which seemed even a bit more musical (in the good sense of the word) than the 2A3. Nonetheless, nothing seems able to pry these Laurels from my hands. And a 300B (even a 45) is way powerful enough for khorns. You will want to put several throw rugs down on the floor, you'll be spiking around 5-6K without them. You will want to encourage wall reflections around the speakers, for 4-5 feet either side. You will want to discourage wall reflections from the rear as much as possible. Put your listening position where you can sit and turn your head to either speaker and be looking directly at the tweeter/squawker. Enjoy, I know you will.
  5. I don't want to have to wear a hearing aid! Maybe I'll design an SET hearing aid amp based on the 45 triode. I'll build it on an aluminum pie pan from Target, make a strap out of a leather belt, and wear the thing on top of my head like some kind of a helmet. What kind of coupling capacitors should I use? and does the color of the wrap around the outside of the capacitor make a difference in the sound? Then there is the PSU problem. Maybe that can be battery power that I carry in a backpack. sign me up.
  6. Quote: "He (the Count) was the epitome of the "jazz players standing behind white boxes with notes printed on them" jazz." Wow, whatever gave you that idea? I'd be interested in knowing because. . . well it's so far from my impression! Basie's band with Lester Young was a catalyst for so many innovations in jazz and one of the most important bands ever. . . . imho. Lon, like when Bogart said he went to Casablanca for the waters and was informed that it was a desert: "I was misinformed."
  7. I just watched that movie again the other night. Been many years, I think. Whatever happened to Cleavon Little?
  8. I am going through more and more of the numerous Count Basie records that my brother gave to me. Why did I save these to the end? Because I thought I wouldn't like them very much. He (the Count) was the epitome of the "jazz players standing behind white boxes with notes printed on them" jazz. Boy was I ever wrong. This guy cooked. And so many of the records are in NM condition, after a nice little washing.
  9. nice work, with the six of them you have just enough for a two-channel rig ala DJK.
  10. nice, but I'd get rid of that big glass thing in the middle.
  11. golly, a grounded metal plate! Why didn't I think of that?
  12. gawd but I *hate* the looks of those glass and plastic TTs. This is mine.
  13. Max, FWIW, I lost all interest in Steve Deckert's creations a long time ago. I would be absolutely dumbfounded if he preamp was any damn good at all.
  14. I got my CC89259's from Alexcable. Sound great, no reason to change, ever. Very reasonably priced, and quick too. Highly recommended.
  15. might try a ferrous panel attached to ground underneath the speaker. Big old slab of steel or iron with a big braid grounded on a water pipe or similar.
  16. ah, with minnows like that you should be able to catch some nice fish. I think it is a good sign that after your ears have been "reset" by real, non-electronically moderated sounds for an extended period, that your spread sounds good. Probably would sound even better with a turntable.
  17. make sure the tweeters are working. They are often blown and the root cause of such a problem 95 times out of a 100. You can check them with an ohmmeter. check polarity of all connectors at crossover. Make sure they are the same on both speakers. Do you have other speakers to try on the same amp? If so, check if the other speakers have high frequencies.
  18. Fini, what better way to "class up" some coffins than with scantily-clad babes!
  19. dunno about that record you mentioned but if you want blues, try a few of these: Albert King (my fav) BB King (not my fav) Howlin Wolf King Curtis

  21. Well I bid $20 and felt worried about that. Thank god some collector outbid me, I guess. Kinda sorry too, I don't have any Sonny Rollins (well, pre-1965) on vinyl.
  22. dang, I made the mistake of bidding on this goofy thing: when I thought it was Sonny Bono. Glad my bid didn't make it through.
  23. hmm, I was aghast at the prices, thinking he'd never sell those records for that much. Then I saw some loser "runsgood99" actually bid on them! Ha ha, what a maroon. Them's the type of junk that fill up the Goodwill bins up here. Gotta sift through them to get to the Henry Mancini and Montovanni records that they keep hidden on the back shelves.
  24. Well, I've been lurking around this forum for a while. This forum is very informative and good, however, I do notice that there are a large amount of people here who believe that the Khorn is the best speaker ever and do not even care to listen to the opinions of those few who dare post against the great Khorn. The Khorn is a great speaker, and a great value. However it is by no means the best speaker. I've had Khorns since the 1970s and I thought they were the best speaker period. However, a few years ago, I made a trip down to one of the new local "hi fi" stores in town and on display there were the Bose 901s for $20,000. Mind you, I thought the Klipschorns were the best speakers period, regardless of price. I wanted to listen to them just so I could assure myself that my Khorns blew them out of the water. Well, this audition definitely did not assure me. It scared me. During the entire audition, I was sweating. I was realizing the fact that the Bose 901s were resolving things my Khorns could not. The imaging was so wonderful and the soundstage was breathtaking. The bass was so real -- yet authorative. On my way back home, I could not stop thinking about that night. I went through all the possibilities, it had to be the room... maybe I was just mistaken. Maybe they just sounded "different" to me, that's why they seem like they sound better. Well anyway, I called them and asked them if I could bring my speakers and amp to compare. That same day, I brought all my audio equipment to the store. We took the Khorns into the room, placed them into the corners. Set them up and soon enough they were ready to go. I put in the cd I knew best and hit play. Wow. My Klipschorns were singing. They sounded so beautiful. I knew for sure that the Bose 901s were no match. After the fifteen minute song was over, we switched over to the Bose 901s -- using my same equipment. I was expecting them to sound dull. That was not the case. The Bose 901s made my Klipschorns sound like a TV speaker. I was shattered, I really was. I couldn't believe it. I switched back to the Khorn and it just sounded muddy, colored and, well, there was just no comparison. Surely there was something wrong with the Khorns, I checked all the wiring, made sure everything was in phase. Everything was perfect. I couldn't understand what the problem was. The employee at the store knew what I was going through. He told me that he too had Klipschorns and believed they were the greatest thing, but he moved on to Bose 901s as well. Anyway, I purchased the Bose 901s and took a pair home. Set them up in the same rooms as my Khorns and well, they sounded even better in my house. And that was before they were broken in. The clarity was astounding. The imaging was wonderful. Everything was wonderful. I noticed no smearing in the vocals, nada. The advanced subwoofers of the Bose 901s blended in seamlessly with the horns. But still I was not happy. I couldn't accept the fact that there was a speaker better than the Klipschorn. I grew up thinking the Klipschorn was the greatest speaker ever. I mean, even my dad would tell me this when I was young. This belief turned out to be wrong, well, at least now. I have to give the Klipschorn credit though, it is a 60 year old design that holds it's against the most modern technology. Yes, the Bose 901s is a better speaker, but it doesn't quite sound $12,000 better. Considering the age and price, the Klipschorn is still an amazing speaker.
