  1. Hey gravy Train, I was considering an upgrade option of tube integraded with my HOME THEATER SETUP. However, i couldn't figure out how to make the system switch from say surround coming through the front to 2 channel stereo. I'm interested on you plan here. Would your existing preamp run your tube or would you want integrated jc
  2. Erik, I really haven't given it much thought. If the ALK's sound like everyone says they should, I may sell the AL's for very cheap. jc
  3. Hey Gilbert, I have a pair of 84' la scalas currently unmodified. They have an AL network, K-55-M and a plastic horn. Yes they do sound good "as is". They are currently driven by a 250 wpc MAC MC252. This is a little overkill with power but a good amp. I made the decision to go with ALK networks. AL Klappenberger is currently building these for me. I think it is around 500$ I'll let you know of the sound difference. This will probably be posted in a new thread with pictures of the installation. For now, I don't plan on caulking the mid horns since they are plastic (K401?). jc
  4. Well, I'll give my 2 cents here. I own two rc-35's. I must say that in movies where there is dialog and "main" sounds" to the film, they sound fine. However, in stereo, I too turn them off. To me, I don't think these were designed to be good with music. I have pretty picky ears . My mains are La scala run by Mcintosh MC252. It is not worth hearing music through the RC-35's. jc
  5. Listen, I had the same thing hapen to me one time on an auction. Like a dummy, I used western union. The theif actually emailed me and asked for more money for the item. I freaked out. I was also told to go to the local police. I didn't do this. i did however, get a copy of the western union transavtion where the thief picked up the money. That person has to present ID and fill out paperwork to do this. I sent this info to the auction company and there was an investigation. not sure if the guy was caught. This is important for the police to get involved somehow so that the info/id used by the thief can get in to the police records. This would help to bust the guy next time or they could catch him off that info alone. I feel you pain. man i wanted to kill. jc
  6. Interesting site So will the K-33 driver work in any of these Bill Fitzmaurice's Tuba cabinets? jc
  7. colterphoto1 I Like your idea #2. I don't want to change any porting. I do think the speaker would have to be on a riser. I basically want a narrow la scala that is taller and without a horn loaded woofer. The heritage line is too "fat". My wife really hates the looks and I have to agree a little. It would be nice to have a custom cabinet with a nice dark, finish to look more elegant. I wouldn't want a mesh-like grill either like the cornwall. I would rather have a nice grill just over the woofer driver so that the wood finish would be more exposed from the front. So you build cabinets? I'm considering a bare cabinet like Bob Crite's project but with different dimensions. I could buy the drivers and crossovers from him. My wife and I went to listen to the B & W Nautalus series for demo with the same set up as mine. We were ready to dump a ton of money on the 801's. My wife loves their look. However, we both didn't feel these didn't offer that much more than my current scalas. I couldn't believe it. We were ready to drop 10K on these things. The bass was definately better but that was it. My two subs with my current setup was more appealing. THEREFORE, my wife actually was interested in a possible profect as mentioned above. She would like a dark stained wood cabinet that is taller and more narrow. jc
  8. Exactly Yes the Mid horn will dictate the minimum width and depth. I'm not concerned about the depth. If it had to be deeper than the mid horn, thats , ok. I will try and send you a diagram of such a cabinet that I have in mind. I will try to keep the cabinet's internal volume for the bass bin the same. Please don't laugh, it might be crude. Again, tell me what the internal volume of the bass bin is? jc
  9. Hey Bob, Thanks for the input. The reason I asked is because I have invisioned such a project as the Cornscala. I've seen your posts. Question, Is there a way to keep the same cubic volume of the bass bin but make it taller and skinnier? I would like to have a speaker taller than the cornwall or the scala and make the width just about the width of the mid on the scala. Would that change the "tuning" of the 15" woofer to be unsatisfactory or would there need to be a crossover change? jc
  10. What would be the crossover options of the Cornscala. A cornwall-like or a scala-like.
  11. That is a very open question. I am not familiar with that model. I have a Carver M1.0 that is 200 wpc or 1000w mono. This is very powerful and clear. However, you will find that the sound will be very "harsh" on a horn speaker. I've hooked the carver up to my la scalas and the result was disappointing. jc

Please list some of the cd you are having a problem with, I am curious if I have them and have a similar experience about them. I have La Scala and a 50 watt integrated amp. ---------------- Hey Manly Man, Yes I found what I said disapointing but reality right now. I hope my network upgrade will fix this some. Again, some of the recordinds could be bad. It seems to me , the more "metal" the music, the more unbearable it is to listen to it. For example, both my DISTURBED cd's, If I try to listen at a moderate volume, I get annoyed an eventually turn it down. It then becomes back ground music. If I play them on my stock truck stereo, I will listen to the entire cd with comfort. Now before I get slammed here, I KNOW this isn't apple to apples. I just can't tweak my system to make metal or hard rock sound worth ahything on my system. If I were to change my fronts to the KG 5.2's, I can play these cd's with no problem. Now granted, they don't have the soundstage or lively sound of the scalas. The KG 5.2's are kinda like "party" speakers. In fact, that is what they were at one time. PLease let me again reinterate (sp): easy listening, jazz, blues, and some soul or hip hop will do well on the scalas. Curtis Mayfield "Superfly" is one of my favs on the scalas. Has that real Big band sound Some of the cds you wanted, well I can't type enough to get it all there. Godsmack ok System of the down good Pantera Can't even be in the same room Metallica good Tool Great ( excellent on the "slower" songs) Rob Zombie or White Zombie terrible jc

  14. Hey lynnm, Do you have any pics of your mod with the butyl tape. I'm interested in other options besides rope caulk and Dynamat. Is it removeable w/o a mess? jc
  15. Great Discussion. I can't offer any technical input. However, I am a case in point. I have a pair of 84" La Scalas w/ AL networks in great condition. I will make an upgrade soon. Dean emailed me to ask what Mid was in my scala. Stupid me, I never looked. At any rate, it is a K-55-M, not a K-55-V. I too am interested on your opinions of this matter. Is the ALK the right upgrade? Is the K-55-M in need of a Type A or AA like network or more like the later Networks (ie AL-3). The above language in this thread is well over my head but I do have a picky ear for audio.
  16. Who has the number to make this order?
  17. You don't know how much I appreciate the PIC. I know when I eventually upgrade my scala networks and caulk my horns, I am going to have a ton of pictures with descriptions. There are some smart/experienced people on this forum and sometimes their verbal description can't be visualized by a Newb. Let me ask you this.....Would I be able to Caulk my horns on My scalas w/o having to remove the drivers. I see that there is no top on your speaker. I would rather not have to do this. I was hoping I could get my big arm in the mid/high compartment to do this. Preferably during the exchange of a network. I don't plan on messing with the woofer. In fact, I don't have a good image in my mind how that woofer sits in the bass bin. jc
  18. I currently own a pair of scalas and in the process of upgrading networks soon. Eventually, I would like a pair of Khorns if possible. However, my room may not allow it. Does the Khorn have to be "in" the corner such as right against the walls or can they be a few feet away. The listeners distance is about 12 feet from the speaker if that makes any difference.
  19. Got you email, phone number and info. Thank you. Does anyone have pictures of the rope caulking. I've looked at the threads. Is this for the Sqwauker only?
  20. hey big daddy' Are u runnin tube preamp and a tube amp with your AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000?
  21. What is your going price for ALK network preassembled for a La Scala. Production time? Payment?
  22. Go to Auduioreview.com and look at the reviews for the AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000. I would like to hear this unit
  23. I must say I'm a little scaired of this caulking. I will change out the network. Not sure what version and how much I want to spend. Are the new scalas much better than my 84' version with a new network? I realize this is a tough question.
  24. Hey Dean, You responded to me in another thread but I will address further with you here. I have the 84' scala w/ AL network. They have not been modified. How much are your networks preassembled? Is there any drilling required or do they screw right in? Do you really think I need to "caulk my horns"? I don't hear any ringing. There are threads describing this process as something that decreased sound quality.
