  1. I have the RF-35's (they are basically the 82's, but the model year before). Anyway, I was running them off of a standard pioneer reciever VSX-d811s I was pretty happy with that setup, then got convinced that I should get an amp as to not short the spearkers on power, so I went with a Rotel 1075 (120x5). I have been extremely happy using the reciever as a pre and then the amp for power. I have been very happy with the sound of the pioneer and would recommend it to anyone, but like everyone says you have to hear it first. I do plan on upgrading for the HDMI, dual zone, multi-room, and new DTS-HD format, but if it wasn't for some added bells and whistles there is no reason I'd upgrade. I'm looking at the VSX-1018TXH-K model for about $600. Based on my experience with pioneer (not elite), i'd imagine that this one will be very similar in sound production.
  2. After quite some time I tested a Rotel Rmb-1075 amp with my system. The difference in sound was significant when going from having all the speakers set at small to having them set at large with the addition of the amp. My concern was that my receiver didn't have enough power to drive the speakers when set to large. Anyhow, I definately noticed an improvement from running just off of the receiver. At our typical listening volumes there is only a minor improvement maybe a little "fuller" sound (although some of it may be hopful thinking). At loud volumes the difference becomes more apparent. Friends seem to notice the difference more than I do, however I think they are fooled by the difference in volume (I can go MUCH louder without worry of clipping). Typically when showing friends the addition of the amp i go to larger volumes. I think the addition of the amp 1) gave me a better feeling, 2) at the volumes we "typically" listen to didn't add much value 3) gave me the ability to go to extreme volumes (when fiencee' isn't home). 4) added some "depth" to the fronts and took a little bit of the load off of the sub. If anyone is in my boat, give some thought to what volumes your actually trying to achieve. We are in our first home, and plan to go bigger so the amp is more of a purchase for future benifit. Also we will consider kids in a year or so, and that will drastically hinder play $ so again while we feel the amp is only a minor improvement we feel it was worth the purchase
  3. I'm in a catch 22. I like the fact that you can get them there, but sad that you can as well The local best buy just moved locations and now they have a Magnolia HT. I was quite excited to see a high end HT store go in since the closest one closed about a year ago. Now i have to drive almost an hour to get Klipsch products. I purchased the 82's when they were the 35's and i have 35's all the way around with an rsw-15. Well at first i was Really excited to see a local source selling the Klipsch reference speakers. However currently I'm starting to have second thoughts on it. It was nice to say when i was asked "like the ones at BB" I could say well sorta, they are the same company but the line higher up. It was the "prestige" feeling of going away from the big box store and doing the research to find a good speaker that i liked. Had i waited 2-3yrs i could have gotten the 82's along with every other jo-schmo who just buys them cause they look cool. I am glad that they have the exposure, and it looks like they are only offered in the black (i have cherry), but i'm bummed that they offer the 82's. I guess i just am selfish and wanted to hang onto that "special" feeling that I have something that you have to "look" for. I mean when friends asked i told them right where to go to get them. I guess now I'm just worried about getting people who run the same bose routine. I bought them cause so&so said they are the best and they go loud. I don't like the thought of moron's having the same speakers that i researched and spent time to find. On the upside i am running them off of a Rotel amp that you have to look for to find LOL.
  4. Guess i'm back on this topic since i'm going to have some $ comming in after x-mas due to some side job work. I know there is a lot of discussion on whether a hi-end receiver is better than seperates. To be perfectly honest i have NO intention of ever going out and getting a pre-amp, so i'll probably never (at least at this point) be fully into seperate components. My budget is approximately $1,000. I've been looking at a rotel 1075, and comparing to a pioneer elite receiver. Price is about the same for both and power is the same. I am thinking the rotel will probably dish out more "real" power, but as long as I have enough head room and no worries about clipping, then i dont really care how much power. My thoughts on seperates would be that i don't have to buy a new hi-end receiver when the new decoding comes out. I could just buy a 1/2 way decent receiver (like the one i have) with pre-outs and then use a seperate amp for the power. However if my thoughts behind just a "standard" best buy receiver with pre-outs is a bad idea then the hi-end reciever is the way to go (at least for me and my price range at this point in time).
  5. Only engaged here, so I don't have quite the same "experience" with the "wife approval factor". However she grew up with her Dad's system (B&W 801's). So she doesn't mind the investment. However she's put the brakes on anything new till after the wedding. (she seems to think that saving up for wedding stuff is more important than HT equipement) However I can't complain because she was receptive to a complete reference 35 series plus RSW-15. Although no more components. She HATES when I "demo" the setup for friends, but after i've finished she kinda laughs cause all our friends are quite impressed by the setup. She does approve of cranking it up when my uncle stops by cause he's a bo$e guy (although he got it for free so guess i cant knock him too hard). Always great when they approve, makes it fun for all
  6. I have a couple of questions. I am currently using a pioneer reciever (vsx-d811s) with RF,RC,RS-35's & RSW-15. With this type of input would I even want to use an amp? I don't think it's a terrible receiver, but at the same time I realize there are much better out there. The receiver states 100 watts/ch. However it does not state that all channels are driven which leads me to believe that it's only while 2ch are driven. I keep all the speakers set as small because i think that is the best way to "conserve" the power the receiver acutally has and let the sub take over the lower end. With an amp I wouldn't have to do that and then i can run the sub as a "plus" with the fronts set as large. I guess the question is do i even bother with an amp if i'm not "hearing" any distortion, and just not worry about it until I move to a larger house and need more out of the speakers? Also wouldn't an amplifier tighten up the lower end of the front makign the bass (without the sub on) sound better? Are there any way's to test to find out how much watts the receiver is actually pushing with all speakers driven? Thanks for your input
  7. Check who's bidding on them. They are all private bidders (at least 1k and up) and they jump in 1K incriments. I say it's something fishy, but that's just me
  8. My fincee's dad got me into this whole high quality speakers. Before then I really didn't care, but what got me going was his B&W 801's. I was over his house and she asked him to show me what speakers were "supposed" to sound like. They put on a movie and proceeded to toss out the fishing line and hook me into high end sound. Since then I've started to build my modest system (rf-35, rc-35, rs-35, rsw-15). I love my RF-35's, but they are clearly no match for 801's. However on my budget I don't think i could be happier. However I had and still haven't heard a system go so loud yet be crystal clear. A few months ago he was "channel surfing" and a concert was on dish so he switched to have the sound go through the speakers instead of the TV. I would have thought I was sitting front row at the concert. When we left a guys outside 3 houses down and on the opposite side of the street asked us where the party was. He has 801's powered by a marantz reciever (don't know the model). He has 5.1 with I believe 804 rears and HTM3 center (i think). and I'm not sure the sub. The marantz does not have enough power to effectively drive the 15" woofer built into the 801's, and as opposed to getting an amp he opted for a dedicated sub. The price tag is huge for the system. The lucky jerk "won" the 804's in a drawing and got the 801's used from the AV store near where he lived. My fiencee' has already said she's trying to get the speakers willed to us when he get's to old to enjoy them.
  9. I think clear Khorns would be pretty sweet. Glass or otherwise, not to mention you could add any lighting behind them and use those to light the room with "mood" lighting. If I could afford Khorns I'd consider buying a clear pair.
  10. Maybe i should get them. I don't have Khorns, but I would like to own them someday. I think maybe i could put the boxes in my room to "hold a space" for where the Khorns will someday go. It's also a bummer that his brother got the last pair ever built. I guess that means that I can sue Klipsch for false advertising the 06' model. That will be cool cause then i can afford to get those boxes
  11. Unfortunately I don't have 5 that I like to use. I also don't have a "great" music collection, but since I've gotten Klipsch (RF-35, RC-35, RS-35, RSW-15) my cd collection has started to grow. If I am trying to show off the bass in the system I typically use Eminem "The Eminem Show" track 3 " Buisness" The bass hits pretty hard and it happens fast and often. If I'm trying to show off detail i typically use Garth Brooks "Thunder rolls" The rain and the lightening strikes sound real, infact real enough to get the dog to look at the speakers and see what was going on. I also use Eric Clapton "Layla" I tried using Metallica "Ride the Lightning" - "For whom the bell tolls" However in that cd i get a faint hiss in the backtrack. I thought it was my speakers (messed up tweeter or something) but my other cd's sound fine. Well most of them... Led Zeppelin IV, The Jimi Hendrix experience both store bought CD's sound like crap. VERY low volumes no hiss, but when you turn it up AT ALL you can hear it... very annoying I think that is the only downside to good speakers. If I had crappy speakers I would never have heard the hiss. I now just wish I could test out CD's prior to purchasing them so I know they sound ok. Chris
  12. With the reference line changing, I'm wondering if it would be best to finish getting the surround speakers before the current series are gone. I currently have RF-35, RC-35, RS-35 & RSW-15. My plan is to get another pair of RS-35's. I'd like to get another pair of RF-35's if the price is right, but I don't know a "fair" price for a model that is going out. I know most movies aren't presented in 7.1 and currently I'm using a pioneer vsx-d811s, which probably doesn't have enough power to run all 7.1 with sufficient power. If I do purchase an additional pair I would be hooking them up in another room until I can get a seperate amp to power the 5, and hook the remaining 2 to the receiver. I guess now onto the questions. Will the new model surrounds not really matter for surrounds? Should I focus my efforts on getting an amp to have sufficient clean power for the speakers instead of making sure i have 7.1? Oh and my room is about 15 x 13 living room. Any suggestions would be great Thanks chris
  13. I got the 15 for the price of the 12. After I ordered the 12, they said they were having problems getting them so after some talking I got a cherry 15 for the price of the 12. It was tough to fit into the room, but looks awesome, so glad I didn't get a black one.
  14. I was thinking about bidding on those when they were under 3k. I wouldn't have had to worry about shipping cause I only live about 2 hrs from the seller. But it got a little out of hand. Honestly i'd rather buy a 6kish pair from Klipsch where I could specify color and I know for a fact that they work, plus the warranty. Why wouldn't you spend that extra little bit to get direct from the factory? I don't buy that they were all legit bidders, I'm thinking he didn't get the price so he used a friend to up the bidding. just my opinion. chris
  15. I was curious as to what is a reasonable price to pay for a pair of 1978 Klipschorn's? Is 3k a reasonable price or is that a bit high? I know the price of the brand new pair, which is considerably more. I'd eventually like to try a pair of these, however I'm not sure what sort of room requirements I'd need for them. Anyhow I doubt that the fiancee' would be very willing to make that purchase without being able to hook them up and use them.
  16. Wow, I think that this thread took on a life of it's own. First, I worked on the speakers a little bit this past weekend, and I got some of the wax off. HOWEVER the iron i a piece of @%$# and leaks. I noticed a funny "stain" on the cover which is why I stopped (it looked like paper looks when you spill water on it, how it has the water ring after it has dried). I had a similar "stain" on a nice shirt that is now ruined, needless to say I was very upset at the iron, and almost tossed it across the room (I didn't as to my current luck it would have bounced and hit the speaker). Fortunately after a few hours the "stain" went away (unlike my shirt). So once we get a new iron I will continue to remove the wax. I was very happy with the portion that I did get out. I at least got out the most noticable portion you have to pay attention to see most of the rest of the wax. As far as the significant other comments that have been going around, I think it's easy to take "scarcastic" comments out of context and I try to take things with a grain of salt. Missa commented to me (while she was reading the posts) that she was bothered by some of them. I reminded her that they were probably scarcastic and then she was alright. She said well i'm posting anyways. Finding the right woman is like getting a killer deal on a pair of speakers, you have to be in the right place at the right time. You need a little looking, but you tend to stumble over the deal while your eye is set on something else. Don't think women will like that analogy and missa probably won't like being compared to speakers, but think she'll know what I mean.
  17. First thanks for fixing the title, I obviously was slightly angry when I posted the message. Secondly thanks for the advice, I feel I need to add a little more information here. I did use some ice when it first happened and i got off the only large chunck that was on the cover. The rest are mostly small dribbles down the face of the cloth. Its enough to be noticable if you pay attention, the large chunck left a rather large and very noticeable spot (where wax was between the mesh). I will try the fixes this weekend since she will not be around to hear me curse her for this. As far as the fiancee goes, the candle was in a holder where no wax should have gotten out, the way she explained it to me was the candle (small little one in a cup type deal) the plastic cup that holds the wax inside stuck to the snuffer that she was using to put them out and when she lifted the snuffer the candle stuck momentarly then fell hit the holder and tumbled down front of the speaker. Fortunately for her the candle was out prior to the fall. I do feel the need to defend her slightly in this incident though. As soon as i got to the speaker and took the grille off she said she would buy me a new cover, to which I told her that I would be willing to try to get it out. If i can make it less noticable i'm willing to leave it till she has the $ to order a new one (not sure how much they are yet). Unfortunately kicking her to the curb for this incident isn't much of an option. She has been amazing in my audio purchases thus far. She was a big help in picking out the speakers (her dad has B&W 801's and a real nice Marantz receiver so she's been around hi-end audio for a long time and knows a bit about it). When we listened to the Klipsch vs the B&W 604's she talked about how much more forward sounding the Klipsch were and she would prefer that I got them instead of the B&W. I had the same feeling so I didn't have to try to convince her of my purchase. We purchased an entertainment center for her to put her candles and when I got the center and it didn't fit into the "spot" for the center I commandeered the top for the center so she only had 2 corners for her candles, she agreed with minimal complaints. Most importantly last year for xmas she went out and bought the surrounds to finish out my 5.1, so xmas was VERY good to me. Since she bought the surrounds I had the extra $ to go with the RSW-15, purchased at the first of the year.
  18. I have the reference 35 series speakers and an RSW-15. She loves candles and burns them constantly, however she knows that NOTHING goes on the speakers or the sub ESPICALLY candles. Infact the only thing on any of my speakers are a picture on the RF-35's. She is real good about not putting things on them and when she puts knicknacks on them she puts a cloth or towel on top to make sure they don't get scratched. To make a long story short she had candles burning on the entertainment center top right corner. When she put out the candle it fell over and spilled melted wax onto the front of my RF35. The little bit of wax that was on the top of the speaker came off very easy, and you can't really see any damage. HOWEVER the fabric covering has a nice wax spill down the front which unfortunately I have yet to be able to get off. 1. Is there a way to get wax off or should I consider the grille toast. 2. If it is toast where can I get a replacement grille, do I need to call my dealer and get it though them? I guess I'm glad that I keep the covers on (eventhough I like the look without the cover). Had wax gotten on the woofer surrounds or the cones i may have had to disown (?) her. thanks chris
  19. I have those same speakers sitting in my livingroom collecting dust but still in GREAT shape. I'm currently using them as large end tables (stand behind the couch). Probably poineer CG304 or 404 I can't quite remember the exact model number. I wonder if i should put something on the rubber surrounds around the cones to keep them from rotting out since they are never played anymore (about 3 yrs of no activity). They weren't bad speakers, just hard to push they are 6ohm and your typical cheapo off the shelf receiver struggles. I didn't think that they were terrible when I was using them for HT, but I don't think that they can compare to my RF35's. However I don't think I could trash them I've had them for about 12yrs or so and they got me through and the large woofer kept me away from blose speakers at a time when I may have fallen prey to them. Sadly they will find themselves being used in either a garage or basement application where the music is more of background noise as opposed to real listening. Good luck if you decide to "rebuild" them. chris
  20. This morning I saw the add in the infomercial form for Bose 321. I have to say that I'm amazed, the add was so convincing that i'm going to get rid of my Klipsch Reference 5.1 speaker package and buy the Bose system. If those people sat in their room and told me that it was an all enveloping sound, they have to be correct. The complete selling factor was the diagram they put up. They showed all 5.1 speakers with little sound circles around the front of the speakers (in the direction of sound) THEN they showed the 321 system with larger circles. Those larger circles enveloped the diagram of the couch much more fully than the small 5.1 circles that they illustrated. All in all I guess I spent too much on my Klipsch system and should have saved up for that fabulous system *any scarcasm detected?* All seriousness the diagram made me laugh, it was amazing. It really seemed as if they illustrated low volume for the 5.1 and high volume for the 321. I wonder how many people will actually buy into that illustration. If you ever get a chance to view that infomercial I strongly urge you to view it. BEWARE it may influence you to get rid of your Klipsch.
  21. I've had this happen when watching quite a few movies. My HT is setup in what she considers her living room. When weather is nice we leave the front door open (sitting above the door is my surround sound speaker). We were watching LOTR two towers, and there was a squealing sound out of the RH surround, I kept looking out the door thinking something was going on with the dog across the street. I looked 3 times before I realized what it was. When I asked her if she heard it she said sure, wanted to know what was going on out there... then I replayed the passage on the DVD and we both started laughing. Fooled us both, and of course there have been many others espically when we watch with the door open. I think part of it is we pay more attention to sound on that side with the door open, incase someone comes up on the porch. Have to agree with a previous poster though, that Klipsch does give some great realism.
  22. I forgot to add, when I show it off to my friends (a lot who are into car audio). I use finding nemo when Darla taps on the glass. It moved dishes that were in the drainer in the kitchen. I also like to use Eminem (the emimem show) track 3. The car audio guys doubt it at first, but when they hear how clean and loud and deep it is they wonder how they can fit it in the car.
  23. I love my RSW-15 (cherry) I have it with RF-35's (cherry). It doesn't match that well color wise, but I have it in a corner so the lighting make it appear as if the shadow's are why it doesn't match. Although I'd never dream of changing it out for black or my speakers either. I had the floor model RSW-12 for a few weeks waiting for the 15 to come in. I didn't notice a HUGE difference, but I also didn't take the time to really get it set-up since I knew I wasn't going to be keeping it. (the RSW-15 was a free upgrade from the RSW-12 because the dealer was having trouble getting the 12 in so they gave me the 15). I was worried that it would be a little overkill with the 35's, but I almost can't tell its there until it's needed. It fills out the lower end real well. I have my 35's set as small and my receiver x-over's at 100hz (lowest it will go) so I by pass the xover in the sub. When I get the volume up it moves stuff around my house. I have it in the corner of a 13 x 15 living room, 6" from the back wall 3" from the side wall. Obviously i love my RSW-15
  24. I'd love to own that lot, unfortunately I think i'm in the same boat as to lack of room. I'm doubting that K-horns would sound good in a room 15 x 13 with an open wall to the kitchen and a large window & door on the opposite wall (thats along the 15' side). I'd hate to have all of that and leave it in my basement (water leak occasionally). Or worse yet in storage. I'd break my heart not to have them up and running. Oh yeah and my mid line pioneer receiver may not be able to provide enough juice for horns. I'll have to move before I can make an investment like that -chris
  25. I have a reference setup all 35 series, with an rsw-15. I'm currently using an pioneer vsx-d811s for a reciever till I can save up for seperates. The dealer where I bought my speakers is moving locations and they are having a sale. I use about 60%ht the rest of the time it's non critical listening, just more having the radio or cd's on while hanging out around the house. I'm considering buying a rotel amp, but I don't want to get an amp that's goign to be too bright for the Klipsch. Furthermore would the RMB-1095 be worth the extra price vs the RMB-1075. I am still going to be using the pioneer for a pre-amp and to run the other 2 channels for 7.1 I don't know if anyone uses pioneer & rotel for a combo (probably not). The 1095 has the balanced inputs (which I don't have but when i get rid of the pioneer I will probably have) and it's 200watts x 5 instead of the 1075's 125 x 5. I read through a number of posts and it seems like rotel is a good amp. I also know trying it in my own home with my speakers is the best way to go, however if they are doing this big sale, i'm not so sure they will want to return/exchange (they are listing up to 50% off some items not sure if the rotels are some of them i'm hoping they are). I don't feel that i HAVE to have an amp right now, but if I can get a good deal I don't want to wish that I waited and bought something else. They carry other products also, but it's doubtful they are running a sale on a Mac or Classe 5channel amp that i can afford. Thanks for the input Chris
