  1. hee, hee, i only wish i could drive like happy gilmore and hope i never get frustrasted enough to throw my clubs into the pond!!!
  2. oh, i forgot the mountain biking and the scuba diving...i still really enjoy the golfing!
  3. old timer, to be honest with you, the rock climber/white water kayaker/racketball player/volleyballer part of me thought it was a stupid game for the longest time. then i got a little older and decided i wanted to try it as a more relaxing sport. now i know it as one of the most challenging sports to do well. i hope i can continue to play for a long time! pete
  4. hey all, just wanted to chime in about the 'xxx-kill' names. up in central n.y. there are a number of towns with similar names. i lived in a little town close to 'walkill' and 'peekskill' for a couple of years and as i understand it the 'kill' part is a dutch term for 'hill'. considering the dutch populated a large part of new york at one time i guess it's no surprise to find towns with dutch names up there. it's a nice part of the country, by the way. hilly with lots of trees. i was in a town called 'new paltz'.
  5. p.s. have you ever heard of om sety?
  6. marty, are you really down south or just tripping? if in the swamp, how do you explain the 'live' reports? by the way, speaking of tripping, i'm moving from central virginia to the outer banks of north carolina. still hope to make it to the northern va. get-together. wouldnt want to miss meeting the one and only 'thebes'. pete
  7. michael, hear, hear... (hmm, no pun intended...) anyway, the science as i understand it is you have tiny hairs in your inner ear that vibrate with sound frequencies. if the db's are too loud and/or too sustained, these hairs break off and are never replenished. you have many of these hairs but they are finite in number and the more you abuse and break off of these hairs the less you hear. eventually you wiill have noticable hearing loss that will never improve. lesson to be learned, if you want to continue having good hearing be smart how you use your ears... pete p.s. i'm one of the stupid ones who abused his hearing in my youth nad now have a noticable hearing deficit at the age of 50.
  8. i started learning to golf early last winter. have gone to the local golf course about once a week ever since and have had a blast. still not very good at it but i certainly do have fun. i got a number of items off e-bay as well but bought my clubs used locally. tried to get good equipment at the lowest prices. i figured that way i didnt have poor equipment as an excuse for bad golf. no handicaps other than my own lack of ability. hope everyone's having a great evening! pete
  9. p.s. i gather that e. power might be a more "purist" version. not really sure why this opinion or if i agree with it. bach loved to wow a crowd also and i think that a lot of modern "purists" were put off by virgil fox's count dracula cape and flamboyance. i loved it and would very much have enjoyed being able to experience his performances. anyway, as i said, choose for yourself but don't rule out fox's versions because of someone's possible snootiness. pete
  10. evening all, hmm. i personally like the virgil fox renditions a lot better than e. power biggs. in my opinion, biggs is rather stilted... virgil fox belts out the piece with a really engaging romantic flair. so...make your own choice. either way its a lot of fun and definately will let your speakers have a workout! pete
  11. hi marty, i finally had a chance to read this post and enjoyed it a lot. very nice... pete
  12. why should we have to choose? i have klipschorns for two channel, rf series for home theatre, and 5.1 promedia speakers for the computer. am quite happy with all of them. pete
  13. good morning, have you considered the idea of a trends amp? i've been using the ta 10.1 for about 2 months now hooked to the dvd/cd player and have had considerable enjoyment running it to the khorns. inexpensive good sound if you have efficiant speakers. if you dont i could envision them going south on you if that is what you are refering to with the "going through two t amps". with the khorns, playing the trend amp is very laid back but when turned towards the halfway point on the volume knog, good god they put out some incredible sound. ofcourse i'm in a small room and only have a halfway decent setup for the horns. still, i do enjoy them and the amp a lot so it might be worth a try. pete
  14. i look forward to meeting as many in the group as who attend. you guys (and gals) are both an inspiration and a lot of fun! by the way, what refreshments are in order? are there any tee-totalers in the group and if so would it offend if some firewater could attend also? pete
  15. marty, i would love to have a place to crash overnight. what kind of tools do i need to bring??? pete
  16. craig and all, good evening. i've been trying to post the pic i promised of the underside chassis for the 299a but without success. it downloads to the service and begins to go out to the group but cancels after a while. i suspect the size of the pic may be too large? its a jpeg but measures about 1.3 mb. craig would it be possible to email it to you direct? it just seemed like a good idea for you to get a higher res pic so you can zoom in if you need to. thanks and please let me know what you would prefer. pete
  17. believe it or not that's what mine looks like... just wish it worked as well as yours! did you get craig to work yours over? craig what is the cost...ball park estimate?
  18. glad to hear that virginia isnt the only place thats been just about dripping. went out on the golf course and although the temp never got above 85 the air was so thick there was literally only about 3 miles visibility. looked almost like fog. thanks goodness it want any hotter!
  19. oops, i just realized that i meant to say a series circuit... my knowledge of electronics in sadly lacking.
  20. oh and in reply to the other post the selling price was $312. and change. add $35.00 shipping to that. i have to wonder if it's possible that one bad tube could effect some of the others, like in a parallel circuit? just wondering. seems odd that so many tubes would be dead but some were still live unless ofcourse they are in a common circuit. anyway, i'll try to post the pics in the morning. thanks!
  21. ok, will do. thanks for the advice and will try to get it in the morning. pete
  22. hi all, yesterday i recieved the 299a i bought off e-bay and this morning installed the tubes and hooked it up. all i got was a low frequency hum and no audio fron any source. crap!! i see that 5 of the 12ax7 tubes dont light up at all. the shame of it is the chassis and faceplate are immaculate. it has been gone over and suppposedly rebuilt with new capacitors. well i'm undecided on what to do now. make a fuss and try to have it returned? have it gone over again with the added expense? how much might that cost. looking for advice. thanks a bunch! pete
  23. hi all, as you might have read in past posts i'm listening to the trends 10.1 amp with a toshiba cd/sacd/dvd player hooked to klipschorns. i don't have a meter to test the sound levels so i can only use general terms to describe the levels i'm listening at. these, in my case, are usually determined by the response of my wife and kids in the other room for whether they ask me to turn the music down or not. anyway, i've noticed with the current setup that the music usually comes to life when i raise the level to what i could refer to 'the smiling range' which also usually conforms to the time my wife or kids coming in to ask me to turn it down because it's interupting their tv veiwing in the next room. damn! this also is about where the volume knob on the trend amp is a little past the 09:00 position. on friday morning i have the house to myself and can have some fun. knob is at the dreaded 10:00 position and i can actually hear all the instruments with an almost visible physical presence (especially when i close my eyes...) but i still have to wonder... is it my hearing that lacks with the lower levels? is it the amp? is it the speakers? what is your experience with lower level playing as compared to louder levels? thanks afor any responses...happy listening! pete
  24. hi all, i've been listening to mine daily now for over two weeks. still enjoying it a lot. however i would still like someone to help me about how to hook two of these up to a set of klipschorns. would love to be able to amplify the woofers seperate from the mids/tweeters. any advice would be greatly appreciated! pete
  25. hi larry, please count me in also. will be glad to send a check or whatever when you need. my e-mail again is: petealmquist@wmconnect.com. thanks a bunch!!! pete
