  2. My move back to vinyl means that I have quite a few duplicate CDs I'll be selling. Is it ok to offer some of them here first or is that bad form (forum)?
  3. As I posted earlier, I am returning to vinyl and Im lucky enough to inherit a very nice collection from my late father in law. Last night I picked up just a few selections to start. I am fairly new to jazz, but have been listening to a lot of Brubeck lately and loving it. Heres my first harvest... Brubeck Time Further Out (Mono, 6 eye label) Carnegie Hall (Mono, 2 eye label) Greatest Hits (Stereo) Impressions of Japan (Mono) Last Set at Newport w/ Mulligan Jazz Goes to Junior College (Mono, looks to be very old label, no eyes) Brubeck Time (Mono, again, very old label) Gone With the Wind (Mono, 6 eye label) Bravo! Brubeck! (Mono) Newport 1958 ((Mono, 6 eye label) Jazz Impressions of Eurasia (Mono, 6 eye label) Brandenburg Gate: Revisited (Mono) Angel Eyes (Mono, 2 eye label) Countdown-Time in Outer Space (Mono, 6 eye label) Time In (Stereo) Live at the Berlin Philharmonic w/ Mulligan (Stereo) Dave Digs Disney (Mono, 6 eye label) Blues Roots (Stereo) Brubeck & Jimmy Rushing (Mono, 6 eye label) Also, Stan Getz at Storyville-Vol. 2 (blue Royal Roost label) Stan GetzVoices (Verve) Buddy Rich in London Buddy RichStick It Mulligan/Baker Les Baxters African Jazz Mulligan-What is There To Say? This is going to be fun...
  4. I'll try this again...don't know why the pic didn't post earlier...
  5. Been listening to records all morning and loving it. Several things are apparent to me already. The sound seems more detached from the speakers with vinyl. Soundstage depth is fantastic. Bass actually sounds like bass! Again, in comparison to CD remaster versions, most of my 70's vinyl has far more slam and smoother highs. I find myself listening to music at higher volumes with no fatigue. This has been an amazing start to the day...
  6. Sputnik: Thanks for the info. The picture posted fine on my computer...not sure why you can't see it...
  7. Spent about an hour cleaning it up. Here's a picture of the beast...
  8. I guess I have alot to learn about TTs. With the strobe pattern glue back in place, the speed is almost perfect and the pitch control is working for very fine adjustment. The cartridge is an AKG P-15. There is also an extra Shure M 75 here. Don't know much about these...age, stylus cond.--I'm sure they're old. Also, where do I start w/ tracking force and anti-skating adjustments?
  9. Sputnik: Thanks...guess what? I removed the platter and the strobe pattern was hanging. A little glue and that problem is history. Now, if I could figure out how the pitch control problem...
  10. Unfortunately, the Dual 1229 isn't keeping accurate speed and the pitch control isn't working. The platter also seems to be making a "rubbing" noise once every revolution. I just think it would be too expensive to fix at this point. Thinking along the lines of a new Rega P2 or used P3...
  11. Thanks to everyone for their opinions/suggestions. I think I'm going for it! I'm moving the sytem to a new room in the next two weeks and then I'll decide on a used TT and begin collecting all those albums from my relatives. This works well for everyone because they'll be so happy to get rid of them! I'm looking forward to hearing those '60's Brubeck/Mulligan/Baker albums...
  12. I have been listening mostly to CDs for the past 16 years. Yesterday, just for the hell of it, I decided to hook up my father-in-law's old Dual 1229 turntable (pretty rough shape) to my H/K 730. I don't know if the phono stage in the H/K is any good or not, but I was stunned by the results. I pulled out some old vinyl that I haven't listened to in almost 20 years and compared them to my CD versions. Even with scratches and pops, there was an ease of listening that was addictive. My old copy of ELP's Works Vol II made my Rhino CD remaster sound shrill and cold. The vocals on Chris deBurgh's Spanish Train were palpable on the vinyl; the CD sounded distant by comparison. I'm wondering if a return to vinyl is in order. I sold most of my collection long ago, but they were in rough shape anyway. However, my father-in-law's extensive collection of 50's,60's, 70's jazz is mine if I want it. Also, my brother-in-law would give me his collection of about 1500 rock albums from the 70's and 80's...not a bad start! Any good used turntables out there for less than $500 I should be looking for?
  13. When I bought my Fortes a few months ago, one speaker had a binding post (+, red one) broken off. I'm thinking about upgrading the crossovers and would like to fix this at the same time. I would prefer to replace it with a matching binding post off another Forte. If I can't find one, I'll make do with something else. Not sure if the binding posts are separated or joined in a pair; maybe someone can chime in here...
  14. I had the same problem with my 730. The culprit in my case was the source selector. I cleaned it, but still had the problem on "Aux 1". I switched my source to "Aux 2" and it hasn't been a problem since.
  15. I recently posted about wanting to raise my Fortes about 3". I ran across these. These stands are about half the width and depth of the Fortes. Do you think this will be too unstable (no kids to worry about)? BTW, I would be removing the risers to do this. Also, will I lose much bass doing this? Any thoughts?
  16. Very interesting thread...Forte (I's), 10' apart, 10' from listening position to each speaker...
  17. Yeah, I know that I will have to try them in my room. I dread buying and moving those beasts only to find out their too big for the room...decisions, decisions...
  18. Opinions please...room is 12 X 20 (ceiling 8' rising to 12'). I currently have Fortes on the long wall (under the 12' ceiling peak) in a 10' equilateral triangle with my listening position. The Forte's are only about 1' from the wall behind them--great bass--no boom. I could do a 12' equilateral triangle with the Chorus II's. Any thoughts?
  19. Hi--I have a pair of original Fortes for sale in the Syracuse, NY area. The Walnut Oil cabinets are in excellent condition. One binding post needs to be replaced. I bought it this way and have been using an alligator clip in place of the banana plug. Looking for quick sale; price $475. No shipping.
  20. Another jazz organ artist you might want to listen to is Joey Defrancesco.
  21. Wow--those are beautiful. I just got laid off; otherwise I'd buy these in a heartbeat. Frustrating...I live about an hour away from these, too...timing is everything...
